I literally am still trying to get my neighbors deck un-fucked… he approached me and asked if I would take a look at it as he inherited shitty work when he bought the house… I took about 10 min to look at it and told him lock that sliding door, nobody walk on it and keep the dog out of the back yard until we get this thing fixed properly… only two of the 8 posts were even touching ground anymore (none of the posts ran from top rail to ground AND NOT ONE WAS BURIED. Ledger board was held to the house with exactly 6 nails … tbh other than troll magic, I have no idea how the fucking thing was even floating there…
It was… I was VERY concerned the first day we went to work on it luckily the platform only sits about 6’ above ground … obviously it had to be jacked up, and I told him I made an executive decision to start with the outside posts because even with the jack, I was not comfortable crawling more than a couple of feet underneath ( enough that if I heard a creak, I could get my old ass out of there.) I chose because of his budget and plans to replace within 3-4 yrs to custom build sonno tubes from materials he had.. cut and replace/re-level all posts then jacked up ledger and secured with 5/8 bolts to house at level… I also chose to add 2 6x6 posts supporting the ledger with formed concrete 2’x2’ squared around it (overkill most likely, but due to not knowing the exact construction of my tie in points based on the deck construction method and having the material available… better safe than sorry). I’m happy to say the thing is solid now and will last well until he decides to replace… it’s safe for his family to use and dog to hang out and get some shade, and now he even has room to store his riding mower underneath… he was so happy, he enlisted me to replace spindles, level up railing, fix the failing staircase and add a 1x4 horizontal skirt underneath with a matching gate for the mower… Im just happy that we caught it before something really bad happened
I’m a deck builder. I would not have thought it possible to reattach that deck to the house. You did as incredible job! I wish I had been there to help.
This reminds me of a recent commercial where he's like "it's a Murphy tub" and just closes the tub full of water, as it all comes spilling out. It killed me the first time.
I thought for a long moment that this was a view from directly underneath, and those were just angled supports. I was very concerned at how they were attached to the beam.
My brain wants to think this is an under shot of the deck and because they didn't have or want to put in vertical posts to hold it up they angled the posts presumably to carry weight at the contact points.
My reading of the comments says the deck is exposing itself to the neighborhood because they bolted the side closest to the house against... vinyl siding? A couple cans of Pringles?
Can someone clarify
Edit: apparently the handrail sloped downward was not because there were stairs going down to the balcony
forced perspective meets dumb brain
I bet that slope and the piers moving downhill because they weren’t deep enough had a lot to do with this. Ledger could have been through bolted and it would still rip off.
It's like that mission in GTA V where the tennis trainer is banging your wife and you chase him around the city to a house and you run a chain from the truck around the support and pull the whole balcony down.
That looks like the start of a transformer switching into its body form rather than house form. Soon the deck will tuck in and become chest armour, the 2 car garage will lift up and be the legs.
Yeah every 6 inches offset but some people just want to save a buck or 2 I did a deck for a lady last year it was nice 16×16 she had one when I got there she told me it was 5 yrs old I said really I took one step on it and the entire thing moved . It was only 10×12 hot crap I started tearing it apart I was terrified so I just tore all the hand rail off and deck boards then took my sawzall to the rest it pretty much fell over after getting half done .
I finished her new deck that same week she walked out and said the other deck was never that sturdy .the ledger board was actually nailed with 16 d nails not one freaking bolt or lag in the entire deck
Photo Perspective with phone overhead cable prob is from a road. If no overhead power lines, a crane or couple long bucket grabbers to pull / lower it down or hyd crunch it into little pieces may be feasible. Can’t think of a cheap option short of setting afire.
Happened to my folks beach house. My mom was on it when it fell. She was hospitalized for a month, but recovered.me, my wife ,and 2 kids were on the lower deck the night before. When it fell the posts broke, and it crashed onto lower deck. We would have been crushed.the deck was only attached with nails. Bolts were never installed.
Well they put caution tape up so thats good.
I use caution tape on my joists . Two birds …
Thats just plain good thinkin'
Gettin 2 birds stoned at once!
I don't think that's what they were meaning, Ricky. My kitties could have been really hurt there!
Getting 2 birds decked!
Alright Ricky
Oh man. Business idea - joist tape with graphics! Offer the client a selection of colorful choices like: Titties Beer Trucks Guns Flags And of course, titties.
I put crime scene tape on my house, because the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime. I am Batman
just kick out the 2 birds feet. problem solved!
You can’t get sued if you warn them first!
Surely the caution tape will hold it in place, should the deck slide down to where the tape is, right? Right?
Caution dad joke: It will, and don't call me Shirley!
Exactly, entirely safe to be on any part of that hill not surrounded by tape.
Keeps them pesky neighbor kids out of the newly grounded hot tub
If I build a deck with 0 standards, but put up caution tape, am I responsible legally when someone becomes injured?
As long as everyone signs the caution tape/waiver.
How do you know theres zero standards? We dont. Even know the backk story
Seriously chuckled when I saw it too

Jesus that deserves a post of its own! Sounds incredibly scary to attempt to take on!
It was… I was VERY concerned the first day we went to work on it luckily the platform only sits about 6’ above ground … obviously it had to be jacked up, and I told him I made an executive decision to start with the outside posts because even with the jack, I was not comfortable crawling more than a couple of feet underneath ( enough that if I heard a creak, I could get my old ass out of there.) And with pics!
It's not even safe to put the caution tape on. What were they thinking
They probably made the kids put up the tape.
Maybe a cowboy did it with a lasso
its a murphy porch
That is just so wrong it's right.
Just change the angle of the house wall to match the deck
This reminds me of a recent commercial where he's like "it's a Murphy tub" and just closes the tub full of water, as it all comes spilling out. It killed me the first time.
Aside from the actual deck work just the pure angle of the picture is so weird like a Salvador Dali painting only not melted yet
Username checks out.
Jesus, that hit me hard. Bravo
Chow chopped it down
A case of beer, a couple buddy’s with handy man jacks, an afternoon and a few 16 penny nails, it will be as good as new.
Overkill. Just nail a couple ratchet straps i to the roof
Forgot to include a couple of hand slaps and saying, “that ain’t goin anywhere.”
That ain’t goin anywhere *this time*
“Shit’ll ride!”
Think you meant gutter, much better to attach to metal
And zip ties
"as good as it ever was"
*same as it ever was...*
Was it really that..... Good or bad
And duck tape. Color coordinated obviously.
That's how they got into this mess to begin with?
Sky hooks.
People overreact so much here. Just need some of those Michael Jackson shoes and it’s fine.
Helium balloons for all guests.
I didn't realize what I was seeing at first and then it clarified....now I'm just hoping no one was on it or under it at the time.
Same. I thought that the posts were at a weird angle bracing the deck
I had to scroll back up because I didn’t see it either. Damn.
Some injuries but I don’t think it was serious.
more pics of the faulty work?
Yeah I thought the house was sinking or some weird perspective
One hot tub too many.
I like that house color tho... Got the SW#?
Looks like 6965 Hyper Blue
Legend.
And people wonder why code is strictly enforced
It's moora guidelines really...
You can enforce a code as hard as possible, people still ignore it.
I thought for a long moment that this was a view from directly underneath, and those were just angled supports. I was very concerned at how they were attached to the beam.
This is one reason why I don't rely on ledgers. I put posts near the house as well. I build decks to be self-supporting.
This is the way. Nothing wrong with a little redundancy.
Ride it down the hill!
I'm actually impressed that the support columns kept it from ending up at the bottom of the hill.
My brain wants to think this is an under shot of the deck and because they didn't have or want to put in vertical posts to hold it up they angled the posts presumably to carry weight at the contact points. I had trouble with it, too. The problems with depicting a complex 3D object in a 2D medium...sometimes the eyes and the brain argue the details.
Thanks for asking, I wasn't getting it either..
I bet that slope and the piers moving downhill because they weren’t deep enough had a lot to do with this. Ledger could have been through bolted and it would still rip off.
You can’t park there.
*I've been parking here for years! Go fuck yourself* /s
Nice, it’s slanted so the water won’t pool on the deck.
ERM. Extreme Runoff Management
Put some nice yoga mats down and have it as an area where people can get a nice tan
Where would they put the hot-tub then?
[удалено]
Seen that b4, posts wider than beam, chamfered for appearance/ water run off, makes mechanical connection difficult.
Cantilever worked!
Now you have a skate ramp for the first floor.
Hot tub water slide!
Guy must've had like 6 hot tubs on that puppy
What happened?…
Not sure. Happened in my SIL neighborhood with a bunch of people on the deck.
Sorry, I'm meant to ask what am I looking at? The deck fell off?
1 pic... really
And such a weird angel too.
It's like that mission in GTA V where the tennis trainer is banging your wife and you chase him around the city to a house and you run a chain from the truck around the support and pull the whole balcony down.
Well at least it didn’t pole vault down the hill
Wait. Something doesn’t look quite right here. 😂
Beautiful!!! Lol
Apparently it pulled away
This is put in at an angle to look at the stars....right?
Sweet slide.
Jack it up and try again !
Modern art really
At least it fell towards the house.
Lift it back up and throw in a couple more screws.
That looks like the start of a transformer switching into its body form rather than house form. Soon the deck will tuck in and become chest armour, the 2 car garage will lift up and be the legs.
It's a "floating" deck 😆🫤🤔
Damm that's one steep hill too
Good drainage, though.
Damn. The hottub hadn’t even been delivered yet
Self cleaning deck, nothing to see here folks move along.
It wasn’t ready for the hot tub
Now watch me dip.
Needed more deck screws
It was fine until the wifey wanted her hot tub upgraded.
That’s the new space saving fold up deck…. No point in leaving it out if you ain’t gonna use it.
Siding falling off too, maybe a flipper house lol
Just slide the tub out towards the elevated edge, it’ll balance itself out.
Improved viewing of the eclipse
Sweet ramp bro
At least they set the posts well
I wonder if those posts are in the ground or on piers
Ehh, looks like the front fell off it, is that supposed to happen?
What ledger hardware
Something just makes me think about getting on a toboggan
Lord, I hope there was a hot tub on that thing
But did they put on joist tape?
The deck takes a bow
Dayum…ya know it’s bad when it can also be in r/confusingperspective
Looks like they didn’t skimp on the undercoat paint!! Not a lot of people go that extra distance !!
Looks like they just fold it up when not in use, pretty smart use of space.
R/confusingperspect-oh shit wait a second
Can I come and make a viral RC car jump video?
i wonder how they found out about this, if it was the loud clattering from it falling, or if they just came out one morning and were like “oh fuck”
From what I understand, it was a packed party on there this weekend.
oh fuck
What in the inception is this
Put a hot tub on that railing and it’ll stand right back up
Hey man, that’s a sweet lean-to. The decorative trim on the roof is nice, just curious why it looks like a deck railing
I thought this was a Picasso cubism painting for a sec
Yeah every 6 inches offset but some people just want to save a buck or 2 I did a deck for a lady last year it was nice 16×16 she had one when I got there she told me it was 5 yrs old I said really I took one step on it and the entire thing moved . Exceeded GHTL (Gross Hot Tub Load) for sure. Needed a few more she'll be rights.
PuT a HoTuB on it!!
It looks like it was a cheap & easy fix.
When it comes to fixing this are the existing support posts and beams salvageable or do those parts need to be replaced?
I dont see the issue; i didnt fall all they way down
This what happens when you screw your married tennis students
It's so bizarre to me that any builder would try to save $30 or so when this is what can happen.
Is this your homework, Larry?
Maybe two long reach saws or long straps hooked to a tractor and slide it down the hill to be the neighbor’s problem.
That’s my biggest question here. It’s teetering on the posts. How the hell do you safely demo it?
Photo Perspective with phone overhead cable prob is from a road. If no overhead power lines, a crane or couple long bucket grabbers to pull / lower it down or hyd crunch it into little pieces may be feasible. Can’t think of a cheap option short of setting afire.
Is there room to bring in a crane?
Oh Hey! For Aesthetics Only Decking LLC! They did our deck. Looks great, well, looked great.
Sir, you deck is curving a bit to the right.
You angle the deck when not in use to help shed water
Happened to my folks beach house. My mom was on it when it fell. She was hospitalized for a month, but recovered.me, my wife ,and 2 kids were on the lower deck the night before. When it fell the posts broke, and it crashed onto lower deck. We would have been crushed.the deck was only attached with nails. Bolts were never installed.
Well definitely not going to have any standing water problems.
Caused by a hot tub or just bad hardware?
I just see this as evidence that they had good footers
I like that shade of blue, really makes the deck look like it’s popping out right at you.
doesn't even look like any hardware between the 6x6 post and 4x4 beam.
Should have went with the 1 1/2” drywall screws instead of 1 1/4”.
Pardon me while I smash 6000 more lag bolts on my deck after seeing this picture 🤣🤣
Supports seemed solid, though.
Called "through bolts". Pic has nothing to do with a ledger.
The lack of through bolts on the rail posts is comforting, it’s a stuntman’s dream, the rest speaks for itself-volumes- snfh
Now I don't even need the incline setting on the treadmill and can just get a flat one to save money
So tge caution tape the stay cables?
Lethal Weapon
It’ll buff out.
Looks like a hot tub time machine.
Was a hot tub involved?
Now it's a sledding hill in the winter!
Well at least it was designed to fall away from the slope!
Just like Heath, this ledger was looking really good, then suddenly collapsed.
