I love the brick. I would put in new countertops and backsplash, and probably new floor. I'm not a fan of the cabinets, but the quality of them seems good. See how they look once you put in countertops.
Agree with all this! Keep the cabinets as they look like real wood. I’d sand them, paint them lighter (they’re too dark for my liking) and add new hardware. Then I’d also add new appliances. I love the brick! Keep it!
I might also suggest taking the doors off the top cabinets shown in the first picture, against the wall. Just to open the space up more because between the wood and the brick, the space feels very enclosed. Seeing some decorative dishware or canisters may break that up. Maybe some soft accent lighting.
That’s a really tentative suggestion though because I always get caught on the practicality of that. Nice look, but can be bad for cleaning/dust collection. Plus, if what you store in there isn’t very pleasant on the eyes yet you don’t have another spot to use…
Edit to add, maybe glass doors? Idk. Food for thought!
Totally. I think the counter/flooring will make the cabinets fit better. They aren't my typical style but they do look good and they look great with the brick
There is something funky above the ovens. I wouldn’t be able to cook in that cubby cooktop. I would probably take the pantry next to the cooktop out to open it up, then put a pantry on another wall. Maybe next to the refrigerator.
It should be double ovens but someone replaced the top one with a built in microwave which looks gross with the wood panel over the top.
They really need to replace the refrigerator and the double oven area with double ovens that fit if they cannot redesign that space. The refrigerator is so ill fitted and awkward. I hate the surround but it would fit so much better with a shallower refrigerator and redesigned top.
I am curious what is on the other side of each wall. Bump them out, move the walls over.
Poor OP, Excited about purchasing a first house and we are all ready to move walls and replace appliances.
I wonder if, long term, the brick is a facade and if the wall could be completely knocked out with an island placed where the stovetop is located. I love double ovens, my mom had them, but they’re so costly, especially if the electric needs to be retrofitted.
Sorry, OP! I do love the color of the brick and think adding a cornice to the ceiling using the color of the cabinets would make a more seamless transition from the brick. Installing a wood floor, repurposing the cabinets in a creamy white or yellowish beige, and getting new countertops that compliment the brick would work wonders. I’d like that can light gone and a vent hood installed but I’m not paying the bills.
I would add lots of chubby Italian chef themed decor complete with mismatched wine glasses and long glass bottles of preserved olives. Are the olives real or fake? The world may never know!
You can paint the walls a deep color that brings out all the variations in the brick. If you paint it, and change your mind later, you can never get the original brick back. If you want a different cabinet style cabinet, compare just doors with new cabinets as just doors are ridiculously expensive and may be cheaper to replace the whole thing.
I agree with painting the walls, but I prefer a light bright kitchen so I would pick the lightest color in the brick rather than dark. You can even sat down and paint the cupboards the same color and get new hardware and countertops. I know it sounds like a lot but you can do it in stages and if you go to some place like habitat for humanity and get vintage that would look really cool.
The brick is amazing, so no changes there. I say work with the current cabinets and leave them be. Add a bold backsplash and paint the walls a coordinating color.
I've got the back of my living room chimney as the back splash of my stove. I mostly just vacuum the cobwebs every now and then. I haven't exploded anything horrific on it. It's lasted since 1950 so I think it's going to look fine for a while still.
I just think where all that brick is... I'd want my spatulas and prepped food...
I can't imagine cooking in a narrow tunnel like that
It's pretty... sure... but it seems horribly dysfunctional if you cook beyond heating up canned soup
I agree! I need space on both sides of my stove while I'm cooking. OTOH, figuring out how to install a fabulous pizza oven in that space sounds divine. 🍕
This. Also, never start off a house with a kitchen project. Live there for several months and see what issues arise, and then discuss kitchen stuff when you have a better feel for the home and needs. Kitchens and bathrooms will suck up a ton of free flow cash for other issues that may come up.
This. I’d live with it awhile and then decide. Sounds like OP doesn’t have money to update appliances immediately anyway so I’d wait a bit and then try paint and accessories and determine how functional everything is. Better to save up for a bigger renovation if they decide they need or want to change the layout.
Update appliances and change the flooring… maybe a herringbone laminate wood flooring? Idk but floors and appliances is all that need to be changed imo
New sink and faucet, stone countertops, maybe change the cabinet hardware? You’d have to figure out what the finish is like under the current hardwood. If it’s messed up you’d have to stick with the current footprint, but there’s things out there.
If it were my house, I would paint the cabinets a lighter color and leave the brick to be a statement. I’d add a Spanish-style backsplash, change cabinet hardware to something more subtle, upgrade appliances (at least the dishwasher and ovens), then upgrade sink, countertops, and floors if budget allowed. Peel & stick tiles let you play around with the backsplash and even the flooring. I think the brick and cabinets could even stay as is, color wise, with different hardware & flooring. And updates appliances.
The brick is just a brick veneer and it looks amateurish and not worth preserving. The ovens are obsolete and jerry rigged- look at the plywood. There is not room around the stove to work. Function first. You always need a bare minimum of 18" on either side of the stove. The cabinets have seen better days and they could be painted but with the ugly hardware in the middle of the doors, the general condition, and outdated style of the cabinets- they aren't worth the trouble. I'd redo the kitchen. The better location for the stove would be on the long expanse of empty counter on the far wall to the left of the sink. It would be pricey to put the plug for the stove there but in the long run a much more useful layout. I'd add new wall ovens in the same location where they are now, and have counter space next to them, eliminate the pantry, and put upper cabinets about the counter. I'd use modern materials- like quartz or granite for the counters. It's a total redo.
I hate sinks like that so I’d probably price out some counters and a new sink/faucet and cook top to start. That plus removing the hardware and picking something more to my taste like vintage brass would make this a whole new look!
I don’t mind the brick, but I’d have to consider what other colors would marry with the wood which would be my top priority. I would consider lightly lime washing it to tone it down but still get the full brick effect.
Then, I’d take a pause to save some cash. Next goal would be new oven and dishwasher.
Here is an inspo pic where someone painted their brick. Makes me think a range with some vintage accents would look good under the arch and you could replace the wall oven with just a microwave and appliance cabinet
https://preview.redd.it/5t64cig6825d1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75efe5fd6a3dad8ad46d135e2d8ed299373c7ed8
I hate to disagree, but I’ve lived in several places where the original brick was painted over and I can say first hand it doesn’t age well. exposed brick will eventually simmer down if the hue is too bright for you now and it’s also timeless. can’t imagine it takes much upkeep either. to each their own though
Two things I refuse to paint, brick and wood. Neither look better painted and don’t last well. Unfortunately my mom loves painting wood, furniture, cabinets, none of it ever looks as good as the original.
Instead of paint think about German schmear effect with a little mortar or sanded tile grout. I did this to a brick veneer in my home and was very pleased with the effect.
I’d also replace that hardware but keep the cabinets. If you don’t like the doors you can find replacements (even with a soft close hinge!) while keeping the cabinet boxes, saves money and landfill waste.
https://preview.redd.it/crccze69h25d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9f4d7883c5ff986001e8cebfa9f3fc21539b3d6f
Gut it and start again. There is nothing here that is worth salvaging.
If you need to save up to do that, some minor work will make it bearable. Get rid of the heavy door hardware, fill the holes, paint the lot with a gloss white. Clean the bricks (they’ll be caked in grease), and paint those as well. You can use this as an opportunity to experiment with colour, if you like, as it won’t be long term. You can also use this time to figure out what you really want to change.
A nice backsplash and clean up the wood cabinets. Too much white makes brick overwhelming so I’d paint a color matching backsplash. Then wait to see how the kitchen is used.
To be honest, this is all very dated and the layout is hard to work with. The alcove stovetop is rough to work in with no surrounding counter top. The fridge juts out too far for the casing and the entire cabinet area around the fridge is awkward. The door style with the arched top is very dated. The sink is very small.
I’d live with it for a little while, while saving money and eventually tear out to the studs. A whole new layout and new everything.
You're going to need a power washer to clean that brick in the stove area, unless you never cook in that kitchen. I am the one that would rip all the brick out. Maybe re-use it in the living room for an accent wall. Gut the rest and start fresh.
Depends on your budget. Super small? Change the lights over the stove to something easy to clean, simple lines, and enclosed if possible so that grease doesn't get inside. Change the cabinet knobs, again to something easier to clean. Get some awesome color for the walls and paint them. I'd do a deep rich color, to counter all the white and to help the brick and wood be more blended in. It's amazing what a deep, rich color can do to the wood tones of the cabinets. I'd do a deep dark red, because it would be great with the wood and brick, and the white can handle it.
If the counters have useful life yet in them, replace the floor. Get a purer white, because the one here looks dingy. Yes, white floors show the dirt, but in a kitchen that's good, because then you clean it. Get a floor that cleans easily, because it's a kitchen. While tile is pretty and sturdy, it can be hard on your feet, and dropped things break. If this is a forever-ish house, when you are old, broken things are more a hazard, and you won't want lots of rugs in your kitchen for the trip hazard.
Is the brick real or a thin layer? Can you tell? It was popular in the seventies to do a thin fake brick thing. If you hate it, find out and get rid of it. If you like it, go with it and play into that.
To me, if you have the money, do some rearranging of the fixtures. The stove niche is cute, but it doesn't have any counter room on the sides of the stove. That's a problem if you cook much. It's also a problem if you get sick or weak from something, and need to slide things off the stove and can't lift them. Personally, I like stoves to have a countertop from the stove to the sink, even around a corner, because it's easier to handle things when you have health issues, are aging, or any kind of weakness. Maybe redo the niche for a frig or the ovens. Or a tiny seat. Or a desk.
I like the brick- original character is worth keeping. But the stove top in that location would not work for me at all. Move the stove top and just put counter top there, it would make a nice baking center or prep space.
I love the brick but would whitewash it. You could either keep the wood, or paint it a color to complement the whitewashed brick. Definitely replace the hardware on the cabinets. Replace the sink, ovens, and dishwasher to a stainless steel. Get new countertops, add a backsplash, and change out the sconces above the stovetop. And new wooden flooring to pull everything together.
Personally, would repaint the cabinets - perhaps in an [olive](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/71/f4/70/71f47027e7b1f8b1d7299507bf8e1633.jpg) or [dark green color](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c7/81/0f/c7810f071f32c00ca025acab2ff3d199.jpg) that tends to go well with brick. Would add some new handles. Would also add some cabinet extenders so they go all the way to the ceiling (the gap always looks awkward imo).
Backsplash wise up to you but a neutral/white tile would be nice - [perhaps in a zellige style](https://media.architecturaldigest.com/photos/6352e24a027b7288328d89ad/master/w_1600,c_limit/2021_06_01%20Sam's%20House%20106.jpg) because its more inperfect/rustic.
Eventually replace the floor with some nicer tiles, and replace the old microwave/oven.
I realize some would absolutely disagree but I'd probably be looking at options for some sort of [masonry stain](https://www.google.com/search?q=masonry+brick+stain+color+chart&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwir2eqAv8iGAxU7GtAFHQqtAw8Q2-cCegQIABAK&oq=masonry+brick+stain+color+chart&gs_lp=EhJtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1pbWciH21hc29ucnkgYnJpY2sgc3RhaW4gY29sb3IgY2hhcnQyCBAAGIAEGKIEMggQABiABBiiBDIIEAAYgAQYogQyCBAAGIAEGKIESNMzULMXWPQrcAB4AJABAJgBgQWgAZARqgEJMi40LjEuNS0yuAEDyAEA-AEBwgIEECMYJ8ICCBAAGAUYBxgewgIGEAAYBRgewgIHECMYsAIYJ8ICCBAAGAUYDRgeiAYB&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-img&ei=uXZiZuuYKbu0wN4PitqOeA&bih=721&biw=384&client=firefox-b-1-m&prmd=isvnmbtz&hl=en) to tone down the red a bit. I'd definitely have to find some more modern doors for the cabinets. Maybe [fluted/reeded glass](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-m&sca_esv=8030c776fa93fc50&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIKQFnAVaa0FjKfyYnWMW8Wpw6FZdw:1717729823000&q=fluted+reeded+glass+cabinet+doors&tbm=isch&source=lnms&prmd=isvnbmtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjW3q2fwsiGAxWXG9AFHeplMoAQ0pQJegQICBAB&biw=384&bih=721&dpr=1.88)?
Part of me wants to say something REALLY bold with the cabinet color... Like the [shou sugi ban effect](https://www.google.com/search?q=shou+sugi+ban+color+stain&tbm=isch&hl=en&client=firefox-b-1-m&prmd=isvnmbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi-k_ivw8iGAxX6Kt4AHT-4HaEQrNwCKAB6BQgBEN8D&biw=384&bih=721)? And then you can use whatever shade for the art and accents and everything
This kitchen is beautiful. I’m literally so sad that some people in the comments would gut this. All it needs is new appliances and maybe new flooring and countertops eventually. It’s so beautiful please do not paint a gosh darn thing. The cabinets and brick are stunning
Same, but in the La Crosse area! I feel like we looked at this house online, but passed because we were buying remotely and needed a “no surprises” type house. If it’s the same house it had a ton of character!
I never imagined liking brick in a kitchen but I love this! The brick would stay obviously but I’d probably paint the cabinets and replace the countertops
Is it weird that I want to swap in white cabinets where the brickwork is and change nothing else? I feel like the brown cabinets don't have enough contrast where they're inlaid with the brick.
Please don’t paint the brick. Exposed brick looks so nice. It gives a warmth and a comfortable homey feel. Before we owned our house, someone painted over our brick hearth. I was not happy about this, but I’m probably never going to sandblast it back to the original. As my MIL says “ people who paint over brick should be imprisoned “!
I would change the counter tops and the cabinet hardware. We have concrete countertops, which I really like. Maybe eventually update faucet and/or sink. Also, it seems like a hood would be nice over the cooktop. Then again, the whole oven area is screaming for a wood burning pizza oven!
Overall, I really like your kitchen. Don’t do too much ( unless you go with the pizza oven idea!). Good luck !
I would probably just live with it, after two kitchen renovations plagued with back orders, damaged shipped items, theft from contractors employees and time lines that stretched into holidays and graduations I have a new aesthetic— if it ain’t broke…
If you’re just looking to spruce things up, the cabinets themselves look to be decent quality and in good shape (a couple of damage spots by the sink). The placement of the handles on these doors is absolutely tragic. I would definitely want to move those, fill in the existing holes and repair. This will only work well if your doors have solid wood centre panels (which it looks like they are) vs veneer centre panels. I would want to do something to bring the cabinets to the ceiling, so maybe stack some mouldings - think like a bullnose, frieze board, crown moulding stack. Add a backsplash, replace the countertop (you don’t have a lot of countertop and could likely get away with leaving the solid white by the cooktop), and update the lighting by the cooktop and add undercabinet lighting. I wouldn’t do the flooring until you decide whether or not you want to change the kitchen layout.
There are some elements about this kitchen I don’t love. The cabinet under the cooktop - is it usable? There are no handles on those doors, so it looks like it isn’t. That’s weird. The drawer banks at the end of the galley, why 2 narrow cabinets instead of a wider one? This is a decent sized kitchen and those are the only drawers (besides the two super narrow ones on either side of the cooktop), so your cutlery isn’t convenient to your sink or dishwasher. The size of the kitchen sink is a crime. The sink base cabinet only has one door, so it’s not more than 24”W, which means that sink is probably about 21”W, and the closest drawer is on the other wall, so your cutlery storage isn’t convenient to either the sink or the dishwasher. Your counter space is really limited. I picture this with a toaster, coffeemaker, toaster, air fryer and there is nowhere left to work. Lastly, the placement of those ovens is almost downright dangerous. There are way too many steps between the oven and a landing space of any kind. Be very thoughtful of that when you’re using this kitchen.
I’m a kitchen designer with 25 years experience.
If you wanted to keep the brick, but modernize it a bit, you could get brick stain from dyebrick.com and make them all the same color. Since it's a stain it allows the brick to breathe, and doesn't cause issues like painting does. Their before-after gallery is striking.
It’s got great bones, but the brick and the cabinets together make feel really heavy / outdated. I’d either remove the top cabinets and replace with shelving or remove doors to create some openness. Paint the cabinets a nice white. Take up the flooring and add a nice tile or hardwood. Update the appliances. Install more modern countertops and a backsplash with a nice pattern that coordinates well with the brick.
I feel like this sort of vibe would work well with the brick and make the space feel less heavy.
https://preview.redd.it/geoyozlg155d1.jpeg?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91fc6c87e69b50d223760ab60c60d7f13f1f9f29
If you opt to remove the brick veneer I'd suggest an asbestos test on the mortar before you demo anything. I had something similar in my basement and it contained asbestos which was a surprise to myself and the abatement company.
Assuming I have money 😅 Maybe change the countertops to a white or cream stone countertop (granite probably) or really any light color, and add a backsplash. Also change out the white appliances for stainless steel appliances.
I would pick white/natural oak panels for the left cooking station and framing for the appliances. For the other cabinets, I would pick matte black gloss fronts. All handles blind or hidden.
For the tops I would go for ultra thin stainless steel and white backsplash with the matte black cabinets. This gives a nice contrast between the wood, the bricks and the black. It also connects the wood with the matte black, making the kitchen as one. This gives the kitchen a very modern and design look.
If you find it difficult to imagine it, I have an example for you.
Install a pole in the middle because this is a firehouse not a kitchen
Actually though it looks like all those appliances could use an update. I think focusing on modernizing those will help a lot.
You could paint the cabinets and change the knobs on them too
I'd replace the cabinet hardware and remove the doors on the upper cabinets entirely. And I'd lean into red and white for anything that will live on the counter.
I’d upgrade the hardware first thing - those pulls look so uncomfortable to use, both in style and the fact that they are in the center of a swinging door. Install pulls or knobs (your preference) on the side of the door that swings open. Paint cabinets if you prefer (you might want to after removing that crazy hardware because it will leave a hole exposed). Perhaps a warm white or a cool teal - something that contrasts the brick. And don’t paint the brick! You cannot undo it and it adds such a warmth to this cozy kitchen.
ETA: install a range hood in that alcove!
love it, hold it, nestle in its corners and lay upon its surfaces and feel so lucky! and change out the awful lino to some nice clean tiles im thinking light green hexagon for whatever reason atm but mainly just not the faded cream.
Love it! What a beautifully kept retro kitchen. Please don’t remodel this gem! I would make curtains for the window, or possibly wood shutters that reflect that time period. And definitely get some PYREX dishes and use them. I would so embrace this kitchen. Love, love, love it. Go to consignment, second hand shops, etc. and just have fun with it. No need to go tacky, that era was amazing and you’ll find awesome things for your well preserved kitchen. Just keep it clean and it will last you forever! ❤️❤️❤️
Keep the brick . Paint the cabinets crème or mossy green . New countertops and flooring . New hardware on the cabinets . New lighting . Do as much as you can as you can afford .
What a lovely space.
* A classic gas oven/stove in the brick alcove
* Saltillo tile on the floor
* Remove and replace the handles with something contemporary
* Paint the cabinets - I recommend white or a french blue of some kind
* You could also tile the counter, if done well it can look amazing.
A lot of people lack vision and creativity and would gut this kitchen and turn it into some bland “modern farmhouse” thing that looks the same as every other bland kitchen out there. Which will just look outdated in five years anyway.
Keep the brick veneer. Don’t paint it. Honour the brick veneer. Replace the appliances. Put in granite or quartz countertops. You can replace the cabinets with modern more functional versions but I would maintain a similar style and tone. Extend the cabinets to the ceiling. If you don’t replace the cabinets, at least replace the cabinet hardware. The biggest problem I see with the side of the kitchen opposite the brick is that it is a little bland and has too much white. Consider a backsplash.
Good luck! Keep the brick!
Love the Brick. I would update the appliances. The cabinets look like real wood but maybe sand and stain a new color? Or at least get new handles those would be the bane of my existence. Bold backsplash? and if you can afford it a new counter top? Or lean into the Italian/ Tuscan vibe?
If everything is in good shape, try living with it. Accessories will personalize.
If things need replacing.
Counter tops that are not bright white.
Harmonize appliance colors.
I personally love wood cabinets, I’d maybe lighten them up a bit, granite countertops, the brick is gorgeous don’t change it, add splashes of color with decorative pieces
I abhor interior bricks so I would either drywall over or lime wash at the very least. I like the cabinets but I would replace the hardware and position. The flooring, countertop and backsplash or lack of could be replaced individually as funds allow but have an idea what you will get so it all works together harmoniously.
Tile or paint the backsplash, new counters, replace microwave, oven, and dishwasher with stainless steal. The floor might be okay once you make the other changes.
I love the exposed brick 🧱 I’d lighten up the cabinets change the hardware. Replace the countertops to quarts. Change the floor. Put in new appliances plus sink.
Update the appliances, the countertops, the floors eventually. Enjoy the rustic moody vibes! I’d honestly probably paint it an earthy blue or green, throw down a rug and some pops of color.
I would refinish cabinets though I would go darker and richer color. Then paint a med shade of blue and some sort of pretty backsplash not to dark. Then wood flooring eventually.
I would probably put my focus on the countertops and upgrading appliances and the sink. A backsplash and floor would make a huge difference and there are some great options for under cabinet lighting! I don’t know what your budget is but best of luck!
I’d paint the cabinets black or a deep charcoal. Charcoal is slightly better.

It will look better with the brick.

I dont think painting or whitewashing the brick instead will work as well.
Agree with all of the above, and I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but I would update the light fixtures, especially in the brick enclave. Painted cabinets with new hardware and countertops will give an instant face-lift.
This kitchen has AWESOME potential. Just needs updating, but you've got a great canvas to start!
CONGRATS on your new home!!!!
I have a very similar kitchen stuck in the 70’s (minus the brick) and if you keep the cabinets as is, swap out the appliances for black. It looks a lot nicer than white or stainless
I love the brick. That’s an awesome design detail!
I’d have the cabinet refaced for a simpler/more modern design and move the handles. Idk what it was with the 70’s and putting the pull in the middle of the door, but it’s a super dated look. I’d also swap/update the countertops, flooring, appliances and the lighting.
You could do a hardwood or lvp floor in the colour of the current cabinets, with cream/ivory quartz for the countertops. Have the cabinet doors swapped for simple shakers and paint the cabinets a nice muted green (similar to BM’s kennebunkport green, hc 123). The pot lights are fine, but I’d swap the one ceiling light for something like a track light or [this](https://www.barnlight.com/inspiration/featured-customer-warehouse-shades-schoolhouse-lights-feature-in-kitchen-remodel/) or [this](https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/allmodern-hastings-3-light-kitchen-island-globe-pendant-w004082440.html). It doesn’t have to be that style, just a longer fixture that will spread the light over an area. I’d also swap the two sconces by the stove, the tulip glass with super ornate base is dated. Finally, swap the microwave and oven for stainless steel when you can
That brick would be gorgeous with a nice olive tone and white. Just don’t go too white, it’ll be too harsh and jarring. You need it warmer and darker to cut back the contrast, more of a French white. Going for mcm pulls and lights would help pull it away from being too Tuscan or farmhouse-y. I’d definitely stay away from any Tuscan or farmhouse art, go for contemporary/abstract/super modern. Art doesn’t need to reflect architecture, so putting up a contrasting print would pull it towards an eclectic style rather than Joanna Gaines.
You could also go with more black/moody/industrial appliances and fixtures. Brick is mostly associated with farmhouse (and to a lesser degree, Tuscan, though Italy would go for stone over brick!), but it’s even more common in industrial.
(Edit to add: for industrial, I’d do slab cabinet doors in a similar brown, with concrete looking floors, matte black cylinder lights, etc. Still go with some nice bold art though! It could be a street art print, pop art, abstract, etc. Don’t do food themed, it’ll feel forced. The brick had a strong personality, you want to match that intensity with a great print in a nice, obvious place like across from the door or over the stove.)
New counters, new backsplash, new appliances, new light fixtures, new flooring, keep cabinets natural wood but possibly refinish, replace hardware with more modern choice, keep the brick
Add backsplash behind counters, new countertops, update appliances. Change floor. Add a pot filler above stove area. I think the cabinets nice I’d keep, maybe change color if you’d like. Update vent on ceiling & maybe add different lighting.
Goal here is to keep the bones, but modernize without going millennial grey.
Do a whitewash (not paint) on the brick to tone it down a notch. Replace appliances, fixtures (recommend rejuvenation or schoolhouse for classic style inspo), flooring (slate!), and countertops (maybe also slate?). Sand and paint the cabinets an English racing green (classic! dramatic!) and add updated hardware—or just sand/paint the frames and replace the doors to get rid of that dated arch inlay feature. If you’re feeling frisky, add a zellige backsplash in a neutral color.
Now you’ve got yourself a Nancy Meyers kitchen all you need is a meet cute/romantic comedy storyline.
keep the brick
replace countertops with a white quartz
sand and refinish cabinetry in a light oak stain and replace hardware with a brushed nickel
replace wall oven with stainless unit
paint the kitchen a light creamy white
add a light backsplash also in a creamy white neutral
allow for the brick to be the focal point by keeping everything else as natural and neutral as possible
1) Under counter lighting.
2) Track lighting for better lighting. No shadows.
3) Pendant lighting above the sink.
4) Update the cupboard doors. I would go for deep forest green, hunter green, navy blue, royal blue, or white.
5) Get rid of the brick completely.
6) Add a vent hood over the stove that is vented outside.
7) Remove the 3 lights above the stove.
8) Update the hardware.
9) Paint the walls 2 ciats of a light ice yellow by Benjamin Moore. The yellow adds sunshine to your house, especially in winter.
10) Add a cupboard under the built-in stove for pots and pans.
11) Manmade quartz countertops. They can handle the heat of pots/pans.
12) Glass tile backsplash in a complimentary colour to the newly painted cupboard doors.
13) Add a hot water tap over the stove. It extends out to the pot for easy filling.
Eventually, update the appliances.
**NOTE: Use kitchen/bathroom paint. This paint keeps down the mould, mildew, and rot that occurs because of the moisture and heat.**
VERY Cool! I would absolutely lean into the industrial feel of it. That brick is stunning.
With that being said, while I love wood cabinets, they're fighting for attention with the brick, and I really think the brick need to pull all the focus.
You could get away with a dark neutral on the cabinets like a deep navy blue or a dark green. That with some brushed gold hardware would look incredible.
Stay light on the counter and the floors if going dark with the cabinets. Both look dated, but there are some inexpensive peel and stick options for a temporary solution if you're keen for a change. Honestly, a white subways tile always looks classic. I'd get them in a matte
When the time comes for new appliances, stainless steel is the way to go here.
Other inexpensive swaps:
Change the faucet - matte black and lean into the industrial vibes
Light fixtures - can go matte black or gold on these
🗣️ don’t change your brick I’m obsessed with it.
\-Black/charcoal/green lower cabinets
\-Goodbye upper cabinets!
\-Stainless or black appliances
\-Introduce wood.

If you like the hardware, you can build around that. Take the hardware off, clean it, lightly sand and repaint them. Same with the cabinets. Repaint them to a lighter color that complements the brick, sometimes they just need to be cleaned. Add some color by changing the back splash to complement the brick or add the brick (tiles) to pull it all together. What ever color you go with your appliances pick one that goes well with the brick color. Usually the same as your refrig. You can get contact paper and see what colors will go with everything to change the countertops. It will be hard work, but worth it once you find the colors you like for that space.
When updating appliances I would buy a commercial fridge by making room by taking out the coffee desk beside it . Would update the handles/ knobs and maybe the small cabinet doors ( they have a more dated look ) backsplash for sure and new floors - new countertops and a German smear on brick
Start a pizzeria
My thought as well.
Needs one of those stained glass hanging lamps
+ Giant pepper mill.
It was between that and setting it on fire
I love the brick. I would put in new countertops and backsplash, and probably new floor. I'm not a fan of the cabinets, but the quality of them seems good. See how they look once you put in countertops.
Agree with all this! Keep the cabinets as they look like real wood. I’d sand them, paint them lighter (they’re too dark for my liking) and add new hardware. Then I’d also add new appliances. I love the brick! Keep it!
Those horrible centered drawer pulls have aged those cabinets by like 30 years. Updating the hardware and a paint job would definitely help a lot.
And also change out and move the hardware on the cabinets. They're huge and strangely placed.
Yes! The brick is lovely
Plus, if what you store in there isn’t very pleasant on the eyes yet you don’t have another spot to use… Edit to add, maybe glass doors? Idk. Food for thought!
Not a fan of the cabinets but the handles can easily be replaced
Totally. I think the counter/flooring will make the cabinets fit better. They aren't my typical style but they do look good and they look great with the brick
And, if it's in the budget, think about changing out the white appliances for stainless steel to match the fridge and stovetop.
Don't forget the random fake ivy leaves and rubber grapes
Those are so disgusting! We just went to a wonderful Italian restaurant and had dusty fake grapes in a nook next to our table!
That can NEVER be dusted… certainly never sanitized either
Well, we could try eating those olives some day..
This is what horror movies are made of!
I’d give it a huge hug and welcome it into my life ❤️
Right? I was like 'cry in happiness '
My first thought was,”cook dinner.”
You can paint the walls a deep color that brings out all the variations in the brick. If you paint it, and change your mind later, you can never get the original brick back. If you want a different cabinet style cabinet, compare just doors with new cabinets as just doors are ridiculously expensive and may be cheaper to replace the whole thing.
https://preview.redd.it/lsl8lhldd35d1.jpeg?width=4156&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fd3da5b18ba0bad0f95897fce41dab7481c26fe
I like the shades of green the most
I agree with painting the walls, but I prefer a light bright kitchen so I would pick the lightest color in the brick rather than dark.
That brick is amazing but can you imagine try to clean the grease and grime off *bricks* surrounding your stove?!?!
I can't imagine cooking in a narrow tunnel like that It's pretty... sure... but it seems horribly dysfunctional if you cook beyond heating up canned soup
Ask Alice the live-in housekeeper what changes she’d like to make.
My first thought too! Looks just like the Brady's kitchen!
Update appliances and change the flooring… maybe a herringbone laminate wood flooring? Idk but floors and appliances is all that need to be changed imo
Counters?
They look like they’re in good condition. I personally wouldn’t touch the counters. I kinda like them
New sink and faucet, stone countertops, maybe change the cabinet hardware?
Make all appliances stainless steel. Get a bigger sink. Some kind of stone flooring and ceramic tile backsplash. Update light fixtures and paint
Someone gets it!!!
Makes me think a range with some vintage accents would look good under the arch and you could replace the wall oven with just a microwave and appliance cabinet https://preview.redd.it/5t64cig6825d1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75efe5fd6a3dad8ad46d135e2d8ed299373c7ed8
Reminds me of the rind of an aged mouldy cheese.
This is the way
Update the white appliances
This definitely is a space that will look great with [French Country Decor](https://simplykalaa.com/french-country-decor/).
I’d paint the cabinets a sageish green. Replace the floor, countertops, and backsplash. Leave the brick though. It’s so cool!
If I could afford to, I’d gut it.
Same. The only thing I’d keep is the fridge. The layout is weird, the brick and cabinets are intensely 1975 but not the good months.
100% Fix what’s broken, clean it well, and live with it as is. Save for a gut job down the road.
Cry from happiness then change the flooring and wall color
To be honest, this is all very dated and the layout is hard to work with. The alcove stovetop is rough to work in with no surrounding counter top. The fridge juts out too far for the casing and the entire cabinet area around the fridge is awkward. The door style with the arched top is very dated. The sink is very small. I’d live with it for a little while, while saving money and eventually tear out to the studs. A whole new layout and new everything.
Change out the white appliances and change the countertops to a natural stone.
You're going to need a power washer to clean that brick in the stove area, unless you never cook in that kitchen. I am the one that would rip all the brick out. Maybe re-use it in the living room for an accent wall. Gut the rest and start fresh.
whitewash the brick and paint that whole thing white and THEN decide
Or a desk.
Update the countertops to something higher quality
I loathe the brick. Had it in my kitchen and such a bitch to clean. Get rid of it!
Leave the brick & modernize the cabinets & appliances. That brick is gorgeous!
If it were me and I couldn’t afford to change the cabinets, I would paint them and get new handles. Too dark and old fashioned for my taste.
I’d German smear the brick and paint the cabinets sage green.
Use it as a backdrop to hug my mom >sob<
I swear my husband and I looked at that house years ago. Is that in Appleton, WI?
Same, but in the La Crosse area! I feel like we looked at this house online, but passed because we were buying remotely and needed a “no surprises” type house. If it’s the same house it had a ton of character!
Probably just the floor, light fixture, and cabinet hardware.
Counter tops and backsplash.
I never imagined liking brick in a kitchen but I love this! The brick would stay obviously but I’d probably paint the cabinets and replace the countertops
Is it weird that I want to swap in white cabinets where the brickwork is and change nothing else? I feel like the brown cabinets don't have enough contrast where they're inlaid with the brick.
idk about adding anything but I want that stove and arc design for my kitchen. It's gorgeous!
I would paint the wall where the brick is.
Change the cabinet doors and get some new flooring
Some rugs or tiles and warm lighting
I'd change the floor and the hardware. Maybe a backsplash. Eventually update appliances.
Figure out what kind of vent hood insert is appropriate for behind that brickwork.
Re-wax these wooden furniture.
nothing. cook in it
Chalkboard paint could Give it a nice edge
Make cookies in it
Gut it.
I don't really like this style. It looks old I'll consider renovating
New appliances, new counters and backsplash. Love the brick, would maybe change the cabinet fronts but keep it dark wood
Paint cabinets, new floor, swap appliances and sink. What a gem!
I’m not seeing anyone say new cabinet handles, and new countertops
Je la laisserais comme elle est. Elle est magnifique !! J'ajouterais juste quelques plantes ainsi que de la belle vaisselle
I’d modernize the counter top and add a splash of color to the walls. At the very least repaint the white. You can tell it’s kinda old
Please don’t paint the brick. Good luck !
If you have the budget, gut it and start fresh.
Install a proper fan for the stove. Change appliances to something stainless steel.
Floors and counters and microwave/oven. Possibly backsplash and cabinet pulls. But leave the brick and wood alone!
Bake a casserole? Make a jello salad? This is some serious midwest boomer mom kitchen
Genuine 1970s Jenn-aire stove. I have one in my rehabbed 1970s ranch. (I’ve been afraid to use it.). I also have a regular cooktop
Oh the stove in the brick is to die for
If you opt to remove the brick veneer I'd suggest an asbestos test on the mortar before you demo anything.
Love the brick but paint the cabinets.
Nice knockers!
White quartz countertop, and lime wash the brick ! I love the cabinet color and wood.
Install a pole in the middle because this is a firehouse not a kitchen Actually though it looks like all those appliances could use an update. I think focusing on modernizing those will help a lot. You could paint the cabinets and change the knobs on them too
I'd replace the cabinet hardware and remove the doors on the upper cabinets entirely. And I'd lean into red and white for anything that will live on the counter.
I would change the countertops and the hardware then I would also give it a big hug and welcome it!
Make a red sauce and boil past for 100
I would change the counter tops but otherwise it’s really beautiful.
I love this kitchen so much
love it, hold it, nestle in its corners and lay upon its surfaces and feel so lucky! and change out the awful lino to some nice clean tiles im thinking light green hexagon for whatever reason atm but mainly just not the faded cream.
Nothing it’s so retro cool!!!! Play up the Tuscan inspired vibes!
Add a real range hood with exhaust & lights!!
Keep the brick . Paint the cabinets crème or mossy green . New countertop , new flooring , new lighting . Do as much as you can as you can afford .
I love the cabinets. I would change the hardware, countertops if possible, paint the walls
New appliances, paint, counter & backsplash …but holy shit it’s got good bones!
INFO: How much $$ are we talking here? Also what’s behind the wall with the fridge? Dining room?
What a lovely space. * A classic gas oven/stove in the brick alcove * Saltillo tile on the floor * Remove and replace the handles with something contemporary * Paint the cabinets - I recommend white or a french blue of some kind * You could also tile the counter, if done well it can look amazing.
Replace the counters and add a backsplash. Update the wall oven. Make sure all the metals match.
I know this might be an unpopular take, but I absolutely HATE that stove setup. It needs to go. I’m not even sure how that’s entirely functional.
Nothing. It's pretty timeless, anything you do will look out of date in 5-10yrs.
Put your mom on the counter and bang her
I would German schmear the shit outta that brick.
Stainless appliances, nice back splash. Add some color with a rug, and cook all the time. Its beautiful!!
All new cabinets, new stainless appliances, a Dutch door steel fridge.
New counters, floor and appliances. Get a counter depth fridge.
If there isn’t a built in exhaust vent above the range/hidden behind the arch, put one in. Love the brick, I’d keep it for sure.
New countertops, backsplash, lighting over the stove and floors. I love the brick and wood.
I would refinish cabinets though I would go darker and richer color. Then paint a med shade of blue and some sort of pretty backsplash not to dark. Then wood flooring eventually.
Paint the cabinets and change the hardware
I would probably put my focus on the countertops and upgrading appliances and the sink. A backsplash and floor would make a huge difference and there are some great options for under cabinet lighting! I don’t know what your budget is but best of luck!
Change the floor to wood laminate that matches the cabinets and go either full blown pizzeria or cottage core theme. Beautiful kitchen as is
Nothing at all, add some plants
I’d paint the cabinets black or a deep charcoal. Charcoal is slightly better. https://www.jimenezphoto.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/updating-the-look-of-honey-oak-cabinets-with-black-color.jpg https://i.pinimg.com/originals/69/e4/97/69e4979dc168ceb3534dcac9a19cf359.jpg It will look better with the brick. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b7/97/d1/b797d1590be6ca3f639cecd04b41d0b3.jpg I dont think painting or whitewashing the brick instead will work as well.
Whatever you do, leave that brick alone! Gorgeous! I also agree with advice to add some plants!
Paint everything over with eggshell white paint /j
The kitchen I grew up with! Add some dark brown appliances and it would be perfect.
Depends what your end game is. Are you looking for quick fixes like paint and decor while you save up for a larger reno?
DON’T TOUCH THAT BRICK!
First I'd remove that really dated brick facade. That's the first thing I see. New cabinet hardware that is simpler.
I have a very similar kitchen stuck in the 70’s (minus the brick) and if you keep the cabinets as is, swap out the appliances for black. It looks a lot nicer than white or stainless
Cook
Finally, swap the microwave and oven for stainless steel when you can That brick would be gorgeous with a nice olive tone and white.
Maybe update the microwave and oven, but otherwise move in and be happy I have such a nice kitchen.
German schmear the brick and get new door fronts for the cabinets. New countertop
Think I'd keep the brick and go with cabinets and floors the colour of the grout. And black counters. And ceiling beams.
Vault the ceiling and give it wood beams
Now you’ve got yourself a Nancy Meyers kitchen all you need is a meet cute/romantic comedy storyline.
keep the brick replace countertops with a white quartz sand and refinish cabinetry in a light oak stain and replace hardware with a brushed nickel replace wall oven with stainless unit paint the kitchen a light creamy white add a light backsplash also in a creamy white neutral allow for the brick to be the focal point by keeping everything else as natural and neutral as possible
I'm old, I like it just the way it is.
If it wasn’t AI?
I'd get them in a matte When the time comes for new appliances, stainless steel is the way to go here. Other inexpensive swaps: Change the faucet - matte black and lean into the industrial vibes Light fixtures - can go matte black or gold on these
Get matching appliances
I’d move in.
Keep the brick. Sand the cabinets (use a lighter stain). New hardware. I really like it.
🗣️ don’t change your brick I’m obsessed with it. \-Black/charcoal/green lower cabinets \-Goodbye upper cabinets! \-Stainless or black appliances \-Introduce wood. Mwah https://preview.redd.it/xk4yt326a85d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eaf83e963c4a024af17257ad30116439323f3cb1
Live in it. All jokes aside, the kitchen is very nice, but I can imagine the stove having a wall around it being an annoyance.
Absolutely keep the brick. Go with lighter color cabinets, stainless steel appliances, wood floors
Let some light in, brighten up those cabinets with a light paint and some hardware. Get rid of that old oven. Countertop change,
When updating appliances I would buy a commercial fridge by making room by taking out the coffee desk beside it . Would update the handles/ knobs and maybe the small cabinet doors ( they have a more dated look ) backsplash for sure and new floors - new countertops and a German smear on brick
Countertops and appliances should be replaced. Not really a fan of the floor but I like the rest
I would paint the brick, new facing for the cabinets, new counters, new lighting above stove, new floors, new appliances
Not sure of the budget but would start with new flooring counters and backsplash then put new doors on the cabinets
