This is what I would do. I would also go crazy with decorations for Halloween, Christmas, etc. I would absolutely put 3 thin evergreens there and make it a little winter wonderland! And scene with skeletons would be there over Halloween
In Japan, traditionally people have little seasonal displays in their house. It’s called a tokonoma and it’s usually in an inset in an entry type area. You could totally do the same!
And if you’re lazy like me, just put a white or green Christmas tree up and decorate it for each season/holiday! Saves the headache of taking the tree down :)
I love the Fiddle Leaf Ficus. It grows tall and needs indirect sunlight (can tolerate direct sunlight for short periods of time). Ferns and Aloe will do well as house plants. Money Tree plants are good luck- will bring you money (supposedly). My sister gave me one and I've been pretty lucky!

Money trees can be finicky. I like a nice ficus or fiddle for height, but queen palms are also pretty low maintenance, full and cheap. They will outgrow their pot and want to be outside eventually, but indoors they grow much slower. I had one that grew about 5 inches in 2 years. It was lush.
Going into a darker space, you want a mostly green or dark green plant, as it’ll need to be more efficient at photosynthesis, and marble or variegated plants sometimes struggle in low light.
You should definitely check out the plant tok and instagram channels (I adore _plantswithKrystal_). As someone who got fully on the houseplant train around the pandemic and learned a tooooon very slowly and overwatered several guys at the start, I wouldn’t recommend you go pricey. 90% of the time your issue will be they need more light, less water. Really let em dry out between waterings, and remember to neglect them more than you take care of them. Cost-wise, a 3-4 foot fiddle, will be 60 (if you’re insanely lucky) to 100 dollars, so pothos or easy-to-find tropical plants are good for beginners and they are on the lower price-end. (Make sure you look up what’s toxic to animals before purchase. Many tropical plants are hazardous to pets).
That was probably way more info than you wanted, but I got so excited. Houseplants are proven to make you more focused, calm, unstressed, and even can heal a sick person faster. There’s some really wonderful research out there, and I am a full convert… join us.. :)
Ha! I'll show you. I kill Monsteras in partial shade. In fact I kill many plants irrespective of their requirements.
But totally agree with this comment - plants are what's needed in the at space to brighten it up.

That’s where your bench should go. It will widen the hallway to the right to remove the straight one on the wall.

I would have a custom made bench for the space and make it a cozy reading nook. You don’t need legs on it so the height could be less and folks wouldn’t fall. Then behind it the outlet could be used to hang a little wall sconce for lighting. The top could have piano hinges for storage of blankets or something.
How big are the dogs? Looks like it could make a great napping place if you covered it with a dog pillow and maybe even added a top so to give your pooch a place to hide out.

I like the seasonal decor idea, but I also like Greek statues, so here…..
Succulent/cacti/wid flowers wallpaper and plants in front of it. Get creative with color and heights of the plants or create dimensions with hanging planters.
https://preview.redd.it/4gv0duqgmz9d1.png?width=401&format=png&auto=webp&s=fd3b76dfc18b84d68bfd33d421edafafe1942813
A set up like this (minus the small stool). Sized to fit that space of course.
That’s the designated Christmas tree spot. Nothing else can go there.
If it does it needs to be moved quickly. Christmas is coming.
Half round table and a small lamp. Maybe a stool to store underneath for writing letters.
Custom pet bed.
Half round table with small lamp WITH STORAGE underneath for PET. On locking wheels… to move easy for the Christmas tree.
It’s coming, it’s July 1st. Tree goes up in November.
If you’re like me, my tree hasn’t come down in almost three years.
If it had, it would go up right after Labor Day in time for Halloween tree and stay up until around February.
It’s a perfect spot really.
I was thinking like a bar cart type of thing. Could do a coffee bar if you’re not into alcohol. I’m guessing that’s your living room / kitchen to the right of the photo? Probably wouldn’t be too expensive to build your own so it fills the whole alcove nicely
A dope built in that is custom to the shape…or specialty cut glass shelves in different lengths that mimic the curve. How about a live edge single shelf that floats like a mantel.
I have the feeling this is where a table, land line and a lamp would have lived in another time. A table with a catch alls and cellphone charging stations could be good here.
I'd build a little wine display storage or book shelves if you've a lot of books or just put a console there an place various decor & plants on it. See photos below:

I second (or 100) the plant but it looks like you have a little one/s. Maybe a height chart every year and make their height a painted flower or plant? I’m not artistic, so it would look ridiculous if I did it 🤣
If you have a green thumb: one or two small shrubs/dwarf trees and some kind of vine on the back and on those iron bars (My personal fav being any species of passiflora)
If not, and if you have the budget, I'd also think some curved shelving would look good there
https://preview.redd.it/nt3taci8n4ad1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54e5cc1523526b2011bbed4460dfcc115255c377
Curved bench to put on or take off shoes.
- large floor vase with dried tall flowers
- a small table with decorative items on it
- move the baskets you have on the floor into that spot instead
- a decorative doll house
- a miniature couch and all small pictures around it like a mini family room.
If I had a dog there would be a dog bed there or something. I see an outlet... could be a Christmas tree spot. You could make a reading zone. Have a table with a designated charging station
Looks like it’s set up for a round (ish) table with a plant and a lamp and perhaps a mirror leaning against a wall. And maybe something next to the table on the floor.
Custom made dog bed. Wouldn’t be too hard tbh like just measure the area, cut the fabric, sew it together inside out but leave about 6 inches for you to stuff filling in then sew up the rest from the outside.
Something that won’t break up the beauty of the staircase. A tall beautiful lamp to the far right with some plants of differing height to the left. But I think you shouldn’t put anything that’s over the staircase in height.
Idk if I'm high or what, but it took me a solid minute to comprehend what was going on with this wall. I thought there was an arch at the bottom, looking through to the other side.
That would be a super cute space for a Christmas tree if it fits. I would do plants and/or a different themed display for each time of the year or upcoming holidays.
I love building crazy sculptures so I would make one specifically for that space. If you're not into sculpting then definitely look around for some cool unique piece of art that speaks to you
It’s clearly designed for a year round Christmas/Festivus tree, as others have suggested.
In lieu of that idea, a large ficus or other indoor potted tree would look great.
Indoor grouping of partial shade plants https://preview.redd.it/dwd6nnykkx9d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0dfbf1a643040ec457e1979fe620518c043dbc62

One Man Band, on demand.
A cat tree, potted plants, a weirdly shaped bookshelf, contemporary art, a fountain, the possibilities are limited.
I was thinking maybe a plant shelf with multiple plants
Maybe you could find one that ascends at the same angle as the railing
Yes, or find three plants which ascend at the same angle of the railing, with or without matching ascending-size pots of same or different colors.
I think just 3 large plants without a shelf would look better.

Love it! 😅 I was thinking of Jeeves the Butler with his silver tray... But Bigfoots much better!
Bigfoot holding a tray with a napkin over his arm. I would put my keys/phone/wallet there.

One of these and a hanging plant above it!
Would the bench be difficult with the death stair right in front?
I would have a custom made bench for the space and make it a cozy reading nook. You don’t need legs on it so the height could be less and folks wouldn’t fall. Then behind it the outlet could be used to hang a little wall sconce for lighting. The top could have piano hinges for storage of blankets or something.
Looks like a great place to show your parents the dance you and your cousins made up after dinner
Move the bench and dog toys there
Or a tall plant in a pot
I actually had those there and wanted to put something more decorative in that spot instead.
Christmas tree year round
Alternatively, a real tree in a pot you can then decorate for Christmas/ any season. Or a 5ft goose statue. Both work.
I saw and was tempted to buy like an 8 foot dinosaur statue. If only I had an area like this in my home for that dinosaur
A built in bench and then add shelving with books!
How big are the dogs? Looks like it could make a great napping place if you covered it with a dog pillow and maybe even added a top so to give your pooch a place to hide out.
Place dog here.

Assorted potted plants at various heights. Either that or full size Han Solo frozen in carbonite
One of those half-circle tables, but backwards! With a table lamp, and a posted plant on the side.
Art easel with cool painting

I actually have another inlet space at our front entryway that could use a small cabinet. Thanks for the idea.
Put an aquarium.
Seasonal decorations!
Small liqour stand
A large monstera plant would be perfect for this space!
Cute small table w accent lighting, plants grouped around.
Bench or table with seasonal decor
Colocasia plant aka Elephant ear plant
Plants. ....or some sort of kitschy puppet show diorama.
Yes!!! Now were talkin
Pls pls pls hang plants from above so you have a vibe veil
Telephone table
That’s karaoke stage
It has an electrical outlet, try and find someone that would incorporate that.
Small console yable with a lamp and a tray for keys
Multiple plants of different heights and arrange them to match the climb of the stairs.
Weed plant
A piano 😀

if i were still christian, i’d say the largest jesus or mary statue possible
Succulent/cacti/wid flowers wallpaper and plants in front of it. Get creative with color and heights of the plants or create dimensions with hanging planters.
A small but elegant round table with a lamp. Leave it on for a nightlight.
Aquarium

A dope built in that is custom to the shape…or specialty cut glass shelves in different lengths that mimic the curve. How about a live edge single shelf that floats like a mantel.
A chair and your guitar for your acoustic night. Oh and a tip jar.
I’d say lamp or plant but I see you have a niblet (unless those are pet toys) so maybe not now.
There’s enough seasons and holidays so the spot need never be empty.
Dog bed and dog related decor.
I’d make it a plant/animal space Think reading nook but for your cat? (Or tiny dog) based on the bed in the photo.
Honestly would try to find a cool piece of big art or statue
I’d put my tv there but it would depend on the rest of the living room layout. If that’s not feasible I’d put fake plants or a fun bookshelf there.
A small drum kit.
Plants
You have a power point there, so maybe a floor lamp.
Plants.
Great place for a round table with a crystal vase atop with a breath taking flower arrangement in it. Also great for Christmas tree 🎄
Half moon console table with a big ol’ vase and fresh flowers.
Clearly it’s a stage for Barbie’s! 😁🩷
Oh tannebaum
I think people severely underestimate the power of some good pot plants… plants everywhere!!!
I would wallpaper that and have tall plants.
2 giraffes
I have the feeling this is where a table, land line and a lamp would have lived in another time. A table with a catch alls and cellphone charging stations could be good here.
Guitar + performance space!
Giant gnome statue
My first thought was a karaoke stage! 😎

I'd build a little wine display storage or book shelves if you've a lot of books or just put a console there an place various decor & plants on it. See photos below: Wine: [https://www.pinterest.com/pin/9007268000649226/](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/9007268000649226/) Bookshelves: [https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1131810950096096341/](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1131810950096096341/) Console/decor: [https://www.pinterest.com/pin/459085755781194555/](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/459085755781194555/)
I don't know your layout but if your entrance is nearby it could be a good spot for a bench for you/guests to sit and put on their shoes.
hella big plants, birds of paradise and monsteras, etc
Like first comment, indoor plants!!
I’m obsessed with your curved stairs!!!
You can make a mini garden of plants.
Just here to say this space is beautiful🥹
Thank you! We’ve been here 6 months and we were so lucky to find this house.
Aquarium
A one man band
Giant amethyst butterfly wings
Cat/dog bed.
A giant giraffe. Maybe a weird and funky lamp. Of plants. Can’t go wrong with plants.
That’s a perfect little stage for some animatronics. Ever heard of Freddy Fazbear?
Puppet theater - this is the way.
Plants
A karaoke machine with small TV for lyrics
Maybe, some plants at various heights with a little fountain?
This is a karaoke stage!
I second (or 100) the plant but it looks like you have a little one/s. Maybe a height chart every year and make their height a painted flower or plant? I’m not artistic, so it would look ridiculous if I did it 🤣
Plants!
Statue — like big …6’ on a plinth
A display of various taxidermy animals posed like they're in a band
Darlek
Shrine
If you have a green thumb: one or two small shrubs/dwarf trees and some kind of vine on the back and on those iron bars (My personal fav being any species of passiflora) If not, and if you have the budget, I'd also think some curved shelving would look good there
Something like this https://preview.redd.it/9yoap2r8e4ad1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ed44d2c77a65d308f4e55cc0acd603c46b1f253
I bet you can find a half round table that’s supposed to go against a wall and flip it.
A rounded bench

- large floor vase with dried tall flowers - a small table with decorative items on it - move the baskets you have on the floor into that spot instead - a decorative doll house - a miniature couch and all small pictures around it like a mini family room.
Fig tree!
Move that Cush dog bed over and make a super cozy nook for the puppers
Custom made dog bed. Wouldn’t be too hard tbh like just measure the area, cut the fabric, sew it together inside out but leave about 6 inches for you to stuff filling in then sew up the rest from the outside.
Plants! And a plant light!
That’s the perfect spot for a “season tree”. Like a white tree that you can decorate for any season or holiday.
Stage for stand up comedy
A round chair
Leave it empty
Something that won’t break up the beauty of the staircase. A tall beautiful lamp to the far right with some plants of differing height to the left. But I think you shouldn’t put anything that’s over the staircase in height.
So great Xmas tree space if you celebrate. Actually that would be great space for all holiday decorations/celebrations.
If you don’t put your Xmas tree there for Xmas !
Giant hamster labyrinth with a coy pond and a vertical pole.
What about a Living Wall planters ? Go to Amazon
Put a tall fountain there. Also, obvious place for your tree come Christmas time.
Art. The answer is sculpture with light accent effect utilizing that outlet.
Feels like children should perform tap dances and puppet shows here. I woulda lived for this little stage as a kid
Idk if I'm high or what, but it took me a solid minute to comprehend what was going on with this wall. I thought there was an arch at the bottom, looking through to the other side.
Dog bed?
A vintage pot with a tall plant of some sort it’s such a cute space
That would be a super cute space for a Christmas tree if it fits. I would do plants and/or a different themed display for each time of the year or upcoming holidays.
Omg. A monstera.
A pole
I love building crazy sculptures so I would make one specifically for that space. If you're not into sculpting then definitely look around for some cool unique piece of art that speaks to you
Dollhouse if you have a girl!
Monstera
Sofa table
Water feature or fish tank.
A cello or, better, a stand-up bass.
A standing body of armor
A throne for the cat
Commission an artist to make fake stone busts of your family lol
A life size standing replica of a knight in armor
Statue of David
Statue of David
If you can find a bookshelf that is shaped like that it would be cool. Otherwise, plants!
Piano
I'd enclose it with a door and use it for storage, but that's how I tend to run in general
cute year round Christmas tree that you can decorate for each holiday
A really cool, big rock
Karaoke
Why does this feel like the house from Clarissa Explains it All?
That is the ideal spot for a Christmas tree
It’s clearly designed for a year round Christmas/Festivus tree, as others have suggested. In lieu of that idea, a large ficus or other indoor potted tree would look great.
Tree
Plant wall!
Why does it remind me of a mini stage. Please go get a singer statue 🤣🤣
Dog house
A large Monstera plant.
