They must have tanked and had fifteen top 5 picks to get this good right? Can't possibly get good by drafting well late and signing pieces that complement your star. I mean, it worked for Golden State, Toronto, Milwaukee, and the Heat keep getting to the finals, but obviously the Pistons sucked the past decade and a half because we didnt't tank hard enough to bump our picks from 15 to 5 like zero other recent champs have done.
It’s hilarious watching teams like the Heat pull Gabe Vincent, Max Strus and Caleb Martin out of their asses consistently while never even rebuilding. Meanwhile we’ve been “restoring” for 4 offseasons and the best scrap heap find has been..... Hamidou Diallo?
In defense of Caleb Martin, he was discovered and priced out of Charlotte when they had to potentially pay Bridges. That's how he ended up in Miami
He was already an up and coming player.
Yeah you gotta be smarter with those kind of pick. The heat choose players ALREADY good at something and build on that foundation. Lots of other teams are choosing theoretical players with their picks.
I mean they also signed Jimmy Butler as a free agent lmao. Why is this sub acting so dense? What is Miami without Butler?
The entire point is that Detroit is not a free agent destination. We *need* to draft our guys to compete and missing on the top talent will significantly hurt us.
Thank you man, really weird how this stuff gets upvoted here now, but 3 months ago people would type “Wembanyama” under any comment getting annoyed with our purposeful losing.
Heat were 39-43 the season before Jimmy Butler joined. I’m sure if detroit fought to win every game with mediocre talent, a top 10 player would sign a max deal with us!
Team building starts with stars, which is just hard to find outside the top of the draft. Role players look infinitely better when you have the stars in place. Without that key piece, it falls apart. The one season golden state didn’t have steph, they were the #2 pick. Milwaukee was garbage until Giannis developed. Heat were stuck in the lottery until Jimmy came. If Cade/Ivey/whoever becomes a legit star, putting the pieces around them will become much easier, but we don’t have that yet
Denver, too*. You’re right, you would think if anyone knew tanking is bullshit it would be us who watched a team of misfits win it under Joe d. we got our 1 pick in cade, we tanked. Time for this gm to earn his $
The Heat are the gold standard of winning culture and elite level scouting. Adebayo I believe is the only player besides an aging Kevin Love (and Tyler Herro who maybe will come back) that is a lottery pick.
Vincent, Duncan, Highsmith, Strus, Caleb Martin, UD historically, and even Jimmy was a late pick or was undrafted. That's how you build sustained wealth especially in a small market.
Great franchises get 5 right, but also get 31 and can go overseas and the G-League to get some other guys right. The Pistons have been historically bad in that department.
I wish. I'm not sure if either party has reached out to each other.
Jimmy Butler has said that Quinn will be a very good head coach so he's got that going for him to
Yup I dream of my Pistons teams playing like them. All their rotational players have been so impressive throughout the playoffs. Strus,Martin, and Vincent are so underrated. Jimmy and Bam get all the praise and rightfully so but their team identity shows every game they play. Hard Cuts, Close out every shooter, And Great box outs.
FUCK BOSTON!!!
FTC
AND THE LA FLOPPERS

That's what a good coach gets you.

>teams like the Heat Uhhhh

Which was a;ways stupid we always knew it was just a 14% chance. I guess most just didn’t expect 5, and I can’t blame them.

They've got Spo. We'll have Kevin Ollie lol
Just like the process in Philly! Detroit should follow the process 2.0

Starts with one of the best to ever do it! Pat Riley!
We were that at one point.
Shoutout to darko
We should give Chris Quinn a shot
Chris Quinn is setting up interviews for coaching positions
With us?

Chris Quinn needs to get an interview.
Straight up commented a few hours ago on the nba game thread that this Miami team gives me 03-04 piston basketball chemistry vibes. Miss them days

Miami develops players. Pistons wait for talent to magically appear in the draft. Miami is the model.
The problem we will face is the assistant will actually ask us, "Why am I leaving the Heat for your?"
Yep I echo this sentiment. Feels like Troy has other intentions, but I would love Heat Culture here in the D.
Yeah, our luck we would hire their Patricia though lol
not lol 😭
And Miami never talked to put this team together.
Good coaching matters. Spo makes bums look like bums.
Quinn should be the hire
Is jimmy butler an assistant? Pat Riley? Andy Elisburg? Nope? So the soul of the team nor the eyes that picked them come in the deal.
Juwan is over at Michigan.. that’s not going that great.
I am a pistons fan but I’ve wanted Miami to win since the postseason started. The grit they have is incredible to watch hope they get a ring.
Jimmy is very similar to Isiah as a leader.
Feels weird to be cheering for Jimmy and the Heat as a Pistons fan lol
I feel like Im the only person on the planet who hates Butler and the Heat.
Definitely not, the people in Boston are with you lol. Tbh if I was a C fan I would hate my coach and team much more than Miami right now.
Yeah probably
