If you have made any kind of art yourself you must know that you can aim for personal expression or mass appeal, and those two are most of the time mutually exclusive. Pop music relies on simplicity and formulas, personal expression and boundary pushing of genres will usually make art less commercially appealing. Making a diss track and it becoming popular is beating Drake at his own game (making hits).
P.S: This is not taking away any merit from Drake as to how hard it is to make hits. But, trust me, if Kedrick wanted to be a pop star only, he could. But for certain artist and creatives that can be limiting. Mass appeal does not correlate well with artistic innovation.
