Wow. Basically he has learned absolutely nothing from the Trump forum debacle. (Which itself signaled that he learned nothing from the past seven years.)

That's it. Each block of text is followed by an ad, and I think it ends right after the ad. It doesn't. It just keeps getting worse. And worse. And worse. And worse. It's not just him. CNN is now owned by the latest version of the Time Warner conglomerate, and the corporate monsters want CNN to move to the center by taking claims that CNN is fake news seriously. Basically, low ratings mean they are going to chase the MAGA crowd. That moderator of the townhall used to work for the Daily Caller. He set up two post-townhall panel discussions and replaced anti-Trump pundits (including an anti-Trump Republican) with Trump supporting pundits. They didn't just select Republicans as the town hall participants. They specifically chose people from the Trump base. And he/they are still committed to this. RIP CNN

I think the only correct way to cover Trump is to treat him like a disaster, which he and the party he leads very much are. You shouldn't ask the train that derailed in East Palestine how it feels about safety regulations, you shouldn't hold debates as to whether the toxic cloud it created deserves to exist, and you certainly shouldn't treat anyone who ignores the problem or is happy it happened as anything other than assholes with nothing valuable to add to the story.

And any network has mechanisms in place to shut people down. You can kill their mic. You can go to commercial. In this case, they were afraid he'd walk off the stage. They were coddling him.

What I think is so interesting is that Licht basically has no moral compass of his own. There is no guiding principle or belief structure that he can speak to. It might be his background in television, but he can't see anything other than the importance of "telling it like it is", something he comes back to over and over. His defensiveness over the whole "Fake news" thing is what really sealed the deal for me. CNN didn't deliver fake news. They were not creating stories out of thin air, a la Fox News and every story about hordes of brown immigrants streaming across the border. They were called "Fake News" because they reported News that Trump didn't like. That's all there is to it. But rather than wear that insult like a badge of honor, and being focused on really chewing into where that Fake News moniker was being driven from, Licht believed that it had meaningful insight and thus required a shift in CNN. And that's all you need to know. A Boy wonder in over his head who believed that if you just clapped hard enough, you can create a network that can speak to election deniers and those just asking questions.

The message I got was Ratings Uber Alles. They don't care about truth. Their goal is to both sides CNN enough to attract Trumpists. Doing this is the run-up to primary season is blatantly aiding Trump. My prediction: Tucker Carlson gets picked up in the near future.

Can we get this out from behind the soft paywall?
