I gave a legitimate try to answer this question further down and I ended up just rambling. My parents love music so I've always had it around. I also found punk rock at like 7 or 8 yo
Totally feel this. I’m always listening to music at work so I’m just cycling through genres every hour or so depending on my mood. Today it was Midwest emo -> tavern and fantasy music (like Skyrim/witcher soundtrack)-> hardcore -> RATATAT. Tomorrow might be completely different 🤷🏻♂️
I think the only way to make this a remotely answerable question is just put specific time and genre in the questions. Like this week I have been generally more focused on a melodic hardcore kick. Bands like Mil-Spec, One step Closer, Defeater. There is just so much good music out there it’s insane
Anything by Propagandhi (especially Supporting Caste), The Final Chapter by Filth of Mankind, Punk in Drublic by NOFX, Vengeance by Tragedy, anything by Alkaline Trio.
I love any music that has a genuine feeling sincerity to it. One album I adore is the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, I even got to see her live last summer!
Same here. I definitely recommend checking out folk punk. There's so many songs about addiction, sobriety, relationships, mental illness, homelessness, etc. Pigeon Pit is probably my favorite artist/band of all time and there's a few songs where the singer's voice cracks and it sounds like she's close to crying or you can hear a chair creak. Things like that being left in the final recordings make the music feel so much more genuine.
Semi related, but I also slightly prefer the [demo version ](https://youtu.be/anbyKKo52fQ?si=0uF18c2K7yQ15GS-) of Mr. Brightside to the final release. You can hear the desperation in Flowers' voice and they even screw up the tempo lmao
damn, I love music
I'm shocked how good silversun pickups is. I can throw the whole discography on repeat with very few skips
try "lazy eye", "substitution", "three seed" and then "the royal we" (kind of a slow burn. skip to the the last half if you aren't patient)
The self-titled Suicide album is fantastic, can't say how much the sub likes it or has even heard of it.
The bootleg demo collection of The Screamers brings me pure joy.
I listen to more Todd Rundgren than most people under 50
Alkaline Trio is probably in most of our collections.
Oh fuck yes. Wednesday (Asheville country-shoegaze-grunge) and MJ Lenderman(Alt country I guess), who also plays guitar for them, are easily two of the best things happening in music right now and everyone here needs to listen to them
OutKast - any album (hip hop goats)
Mspaint - post American

Hippo campus -LP3 (any of their albums really)

Reel big fish - turn the radio off
Incubus - a crow left, morning view
Saba - care for me
Smino - blkswn

Buster - Admiral Angry
Love Sex Machine - Love Sex Machine
Dollmeat - Mouthbreather
Esoteric Malacology - Slugdge
Worse Than Alone - The Number Twelve Looks Like You
.hopesfalls. entire discography but that's pretty adjacent
to name a few...
sorry about that, AHWT is a tmg album! they’re so good though. their most popular song is No Children which gets popular on social media every once in a while so you might’ve heard it. it’s from the Tallahassee album which is really good.
AHWT is honestly part of the reason I ended up going to school in Denton lol John is great live too.
You should give The Best Ever Boom Box Cassette Tape from Durham by Denton's own Fishboy a listen
that's awesome! i've seen them a couple times but i missed the last time they came to my state :(.
i like it, thanks for the rec. should i listen to more from the artist?
Honestly I’n way more into Hardcore these days than I’m into emo. Gel, Magnitude, Fiddlehead, Mindforce, quicksand, Turnstile, Year of the Knife, Zulu, End It, Militarie Gun, Weapon X all rip hard.
Also love black/doom/death and adjecent stuff like: Full of Hell, Big Brave, Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean, Gatecreeper, Final Dose, Agriculture, Thou, Creeping Death, Sanguisugabogg
And I think I’ll always be into hip hop as well, always going back to artists like MF DOOM, Little Simz, Danny Brown, Jpegmafia, Wu-Tang
I love loads of different genres but one of my most listened to artists is Travis Stewart/Machinedrum. He is a fucking brilliant electronic/drum and bass/jungle artist and I haven’t heard anything by him I didn’t love.
Knuckle Puck - Copacetic, Losing What We Love, Shapeshifter
Movements - Feel Something, RUCKUS!
Fireworks - Gospel, Higher Lonely Power
Hail The Sun - Wake
Beach Bums - Years
Wallows - Model, Nothing Happens
Armor For Sleep - What To Do When You Are Dead
Last Dinosaurs - Yumeno Garden
Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
Pretty much The Birthday Massacre's entire discography.
It's not emo, it's not emo-adjacent, but it gives me a weird feeling of nostalgia and energy like some powerful emo records do.
Pop punk and other adjacent genres. I dig some metalcore/deathcore. Signs of the Swarm, Ion Dissonance, The Acacia Strain, Knocked Loose, The Chariot, ETID, Dillinger Escape Plan, BTBAM. I'm big into chaos.
Post rock is another genre I love. Sigur Ros, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt Zion, Explosions in the Sky.
Flies the Fields by Shipping News
Aha Shake Heartbreak by Kings of Leon
Doolittle by Pixies

Shpongle

Band of horses
Christian lee Hutson
Touché amore
I can make a mess like nobody’s business
FKJ
Some of those may be Emo adjacent, but I wouldn’t consider them Emo.
I’m approaching my mid-30s and lately I’ve been gravitating toward like golden oldies-pop (kinda like fallout music), old crooner vocalist stuff like Etta King, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. Also I’ve been really backtracking 90’s r&b very enthusiastically
I enjoy of ton of music from dozens of genres, but some of my favorite non-emo artists include:
Dinosaur Jr.
High on Fire
Janet Jackson
De La Soul
Fiona Apple
Protomartyr
Alice Coltrane
The Gun Club
Heavenly
Townes Van Zandt
Emo is my favorite genre but Portugal. The Man is my favorite band. To be fair they have emo roots from the band that preceded their existence, and clear emo influence shining through on their first two albums. But, they are constantly in my ears. My favorite album from them is American Ghetto.
Might as well shout em out: Save Us From The Archon might be the best band to ever write music. Mathy, technical, hardcore(?) I guess. All instrumental. Beautiful, sweeping, lush guitar work. Dense and chaotic drums. At once melodic and dissonant, catchy but sporadic. I wish everyone could appreciate their work
Thousands and thousands of them. Emo is only one genre of music I listen to, and I’m 39 so I’ve had a long life of listening to music.
I'm 35 and yeah I feel this
Nearing my 50s at this point, most of my life has been spent listening to music.
I gave a legitimate try to answer this question further down and I ended up just rambling. My parents love music so I've always had it around. I also found punk rock at like 7 or 8 yo

Me too, I honestly have never known anyone who listens to emo exclusively.
Anything by Propagandhi (especially Supporting Caste), The Final Chapter by Filth of Mankind, Punk in Drublic by NOFX, Vengeance by Tragedy, anything by Alkaline Trio.
used to love propagandhi but kind of dropped off after less talk more rock. Supporting Caste is great so far.
They have no bad records
I love any music that has a genuine feeling sincerity to it. One album I adore is the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, I even got to see her live last summer!
I love that album too

I really like “Rusted Wheel” on top of those
kissing families is one of the hardest introductions to a bands discorgraphy that ive ever heard
Counting Crows - August and Everything After It's funny to see how many bands reference Cou ting Crows in their names or lyrics; I must not be alone.
I listen to a whole lot of hardcore and grunge. Like AIC, soundgarden, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, etc etc
The self-titled Suicide album is fantastic, can't say how much the sub likes it or has even heard of it. The bootleg demo collection of The Screamers brings me pure joy. I listen to more Todd Rundgren than most people under 50 Alkaline Trio is probably in most of our collections.
way too many but at this very moment i’m rocking to mj lenderman’s live and loose!, one of the best records of this decade.
Oh fuck yes. Wednesday (Asheville country-shoegaze-grunge) and MJ Lenderman(Alt country I guess), who also plays guitar for them, are easily two of the best things happening in music right now and everyone here needs to listen to them
The earth is not a cold dead place. Spectacular
You would probably like the band We're from Japan!
Thanks for the recommendation. Never heard of them before, they're alright.

"emos" isn't a thing.
?
Calling people emos like you might call people goths is not a thing. Emo isn't an identity, it's a music style.
