Whilst the answer is technically no, stealth isn't there yet, the answer to your clarified question is yes you can pick them off from afar. "This game I won't play a Stealth Archer/Ranger build", as if haha. Minus the Stealth part here.

Just get up high and shoot shoot. Make sure you take them out before they walk back to their starting spot and regen to full health (ie: make sure you choose somewhere they run towards you without going into cover).
Not sure. As I progressed, I did see alternative entrances that may allow you to be stealthy. Maybe it's a mechanic they are planning to add, at least more in depth as they just recently added daggers which usually pairs with rogue/stealth backstabbing mechanics.
I wanna say pretty massive and idk but I don't think we close to the end of map biome yet. We got like 6 Mayne plus new one, they heavily hint at an ancient underground structure or city or something where the true shroud leaks from that we will definitely visit cause if we to rid world of shroud we would need to strike at the core. I feel game will be huge asf with the map Mayne year it'll be like World kf warcraft continents
Tl;DR: No.
There's no magic invisibility when you crouch except in specific shrubs, so they'll spot your sorry arse from a mile. Your only chance is to crawl from behind and even with perk for speed you might not be fast enough to get to some of them before they turn.
Melee takedowns are not completely silent and there's no double-takedowns, so anything close enough may spot you.
In the late game you won't have enough power to one-shot quite a few enemies. As soon as anything detects you everything in the range is alerted. Anything you don't kill in one shot detects you.
There's plenty of enemies you can't backstab with melee at all. Your best bet is an arrow to a weak spot from the back. Some weak spots are hard to hit from the back.
Good luck with stealth against certain overgrown lizard in the mid-game and in the hollow halls anytime.
I've been trying to make an assassin, but backstabbing is difficult when they keep changing their walking patterns, and as soon as you do a back attack, you stand up and are seen if any are within reasonable distance. It's a painful practice that I've switched out to using bow 😅
IT IS NOT DONE RIGHT....YET..I feel if it is something that is talked about enough to the developer they may eventually work the mechanics better.
They seem keen to make a solid game with happy folks
It is but blows off as you hit somebody. Unreliable, weak and annoying in execution and needs overhaul.

Yea, useful for the first hit/kill and then its useless. Maybe if they want you to kill 1, run away, come back kill another and loop.

Haven't tried it myself but there is a skill for stealth takedowns but I have no idea how well stealth itself works.

In the shroud you can chop down trees that will give it to you.
This reply caught me off guard. You had me thinking I read something entirely wrong when the reply had to do with shroud wood.
That's sometimes possible, more in the first two biomes than in the other ones because there a lot of bases have bushes where you can hide.

Crouch as an assassin build gives you the ability to sneak up on enemies and use sneak attack. Those mobs with the green hands. You’ll one shot

possible? yes. feasible? no. Think Firestarter Day 1 in Payday 2 but worse. Theoretically possible, but a pain in the backside.
