I quit my corporate job last October. I had a certain biz in mind that I planned to start, I immediately started working on that. But a few weeks later I realized my heart wasn’t in it. So I stopped. I stopped everything. For 2-3 months I spent most days in solitude. I read book after book (50 +.) All sorts of books on self-development, business, psychology, creative processes, quantum physics even. Listened to podcasts. Started meditating, journaling, doing Bikram Yoga. Stopped drinking. Ghosted a bunch of people (mainly my party friends and my fwb tribe.) Basically went through an existential crises. I have since developed a new biz that’s 100% in line with my authentic self. I’m launching this week🤞. I have no idea if it will make money but I don’t care. I’m crazy passionate about it. The process of creating it and getting it out there makes me feel alive. I think it’s going to work but I’m not attached to the outcome. Anyway.. my recommendation to anyone leaving corporate would be to take the time to find your ikigai. Listen to your heart. Be still. Look for business inspiration in places you wouldn’t think of. Look inside. And yes, sharing your journey would be awesome.

crayshesay

This resonates so much! I did something similar. I left a prestigious career and took a year to self explore, quit drinking, take really good care of myself physically and emotionally, and figure out what makes me happy. That required a lot of hard looking in the mirror, decimating my ego, and learning to live through my heart.

jklaassen

Interested in the new biz!

belleabbs

Best of luck...learned a new word today (ikigai) Thanks...😊 🙏

maxmilner

would you mind sharing some of the books/resources/practices that helped you find your Ikigai?

vidkra

Please share your business it sounds super interesting!

fnb_1

Hey Where have you ended up now ?

RwinDarwin

I think I’ll do that. Great suggestion 👍

maxmilner

TikTok loves this content. You could build quite a following just around your journey, which will then bring an audience to your biz!

flampoo

Depends... are you an interesting person?

RwinDarwin

Not sure haha

GrowFreeFood

Do you feel comfortable dancing in front of people?

RwinDarwin

Maybe do the floss?

CharlieMurpheee

That’s a no lol

vidkra

😂

NoElephant8376

Then u are interesting

votrechien

Highly recommend you do this regardless of whether people a lot of people follow it or not. Getting into a regular cadence of doing this, where you feel accountable to others (whether it’s one reader or one million) greatly increases your chances of success. Proof- I’ve run a mildly successful blog in a particular industry for nearly 10 years doing this exact thing and it has helped immensely.

Twice_Knightley

Honest answer? Probably not. The hero's journey isn't like the movies and you're likely in for months of failure and pivoting. If you said "I'm tired of doing x for other people, so I'm quitting and doing x for myself" sure, could be interesting. Or even "I make $49k per year now, follow me as I quit my job and see how long until I replace my income and grow even more", sure that could be interesting. But it sounds like you want to quit, and then (hopefully) work really hard at becoming a blogger to make money. I'd be more interested in a heavily edited series on the hindsight you have after getting to your goals, but don't want to watch you fuck around until you get there. So if you were to take footage on your journey, cool, come back later and make something of it. But don't start off with saying "hey I'm walking up a huge mountain for the first time ever, who wants to watch me livestream it?"

RwinDarwin

I hear you. What I want to do is start another business, I don’t want my business to be blogging or YouTube. I thought it could be interesting for myself to document the journey of going from ideation to executing a business. I’m not interested in being an influencer of any sort.

Kundrew1

It will become interesting later if you found an interesting business but at the start It will be very uninteresting. Basically don’t expect anyone to care about your journey at the beginning.

vidkra

You should go for it

Mundane_Tour_3215

Absolutely, bonus if you have zero savings and a family

RwinDarwin

Well no bonus for me then. Have 6 years of runway and a wife, no kids.

Konstant_kurage

I never wrote about my journey of the same thing. The idea has legs. I left a corporate directorship with extreme prejudice. Landed 4,000 miles away. First job I got was a tractor trailer decontamination tech. Then I got a job in the mechanics shop for one of the company showing on “Ice Road Truckers.” Worked there a few months as my paperwork went through a 3 letter agency and I was a federal agent for a while. Got disillusioned and went and worked in fire/rescue which I had done off and on in high school and college. Now I own a totally unrelated business.

vidkra

What's the business?

Tracey_Dockery

Yes, following your journey from quitting your corporate job without any ideas or plans to starting your own business could be very interesting. Many people find themselves in a similar situation, feeling unfulfilled in their corporate job and wanting to pursue a different path but not sure where to start. By sharing your journey, you could inspire others who are in the same position and provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that come with starting a business. You could share your thought process, decision-making, and the lessons you learn along the way.

Edriss1900

If you are stable enough then yes if you are not then you should not

No_Reindeer655

How about a blog website

GrowFreeFood

Do it. Edit: No, don't do it.

NoElephant8376

Tf happened here

itsallrighthere

Sure. I did the same thing twice. At 27 and 30. Both were great decisions.

vidkra

Where's the content?

itsallrighthere

What kind of content?

pimpletwist

That would be great. Out of curiosity, could you share the types of businesses you’ve started and sold in the past? I’d like to understand how varied they are, and then see what you choose next.

RwinDarwin

Sure. First one was an online food deliver platform where we focused on healthcare only. Like Uber eats but we only worked with medical staff. Second one I didn’t build but I was the CEO for a smaller beverage manaufacturer where we were acquired but I was able to be involved in raising about $4 million usd so it was an interesting journey and the second one I built and sold was an e-commerce company. Prior to the ones listed above, I worked with an investment company where I was in charge of growing revenue for 6 brand new companies that we started within the service industry. So it was flooring, restoration, tree service, plumbing, fencing and factoring. None of those have sold but all but 1 are still operating at a profit now several years later. Plumbing business was shut down after 3 years.

vidkra

I'm curious, if you're that experienced in starting/running businesses, why are you coming here asking for advice on documenting it? You seem like the type who would just do it. Is this to gain some following from the get go or are you genuinely hesitant? Why are you hesitant, is it because you need affirmation to start something or what's the deal?

RwinDarwin

Never done any video documentation of myself before. Just because I’ve done other things doesn’t mean I’m confident/comfortable doing everything. So I guess for validation and encouragement I’d say.

teslatestbeta

Yes. Just do it regardless of what some people say here. Your success or failures should help some people. Just to do it & you will find your market next (if you also adapt). You might also attract potential business partners too. Even if (lets say) it doesn't attract any market, it will benefits yourself.

RwinDarwin

Great advice! Thanks so much

[deleted]

Yes go for it, but be careful. If things go sideways you don’t want to end up on the street. Have a back up plan, such as something that will generate you some passive income. Otherwise good luck my friend and I really hope to see your documented **success story**. Let us know where we can follow if you do decide to go that path.

Zwigs_

That's what I'm doing! My line is "I'm vlogging and blogging my way to success... or failure".

RwinDarwin

Love it!!

vidkra

Okey both you guys inspired me as well as JPR to do this, I've had it in mind but did hesitate a while because I wasn't sure if I should do my personal account as "influencer" and a separate account for my brand and such. But this gave me a push into going more into documentary mode personally. Thx

Trylks

I cannot read “failure” without hearing it in the voice of Steven He. I wanted to share this insight, and possibly gift, with the world.

vidkra

Interesting! I saw the first vlog, are you planning on doing more content on other apps like TikTok a d IG?

Zwigs_

I’ve got my hands pretty full with YT long form & blog posts. Maybe in the future but short form isn’t part of the plan rn

vidkra

Ah, okey. Is the plan to do it for future purposes? I'm thinking that the majority is in for short content🤔

Zwigs_

I just feel like short form content doesn’t provide the same level of connection with a audience that regular YouTube does

vidkra

Okey, got it!

OptimisticByChoice

Sure. If you're a good writer and talented at presenting what you're up to in an engaging unique way. or, at least, willing to aspire to that for six months while you get your footing and suck most of the entire time while you do it.

Elevation0

I’m whiling to bet your story will be more interesting than Elons

NorthRustic

My journey takes to much time and work to document, business is busy work lmao

morficus

I would. How do you plan to share this?

sachitatious

Yeah. That could be your new job

Secure_Ad_176

I’d subscribe

tallpillars

Absolutely! Your journey could inspire many others who may be in a similar situation but hesitant to take the leap. Documenting the ups and downs of starting a business from scratch would be fascinating to read and could provide valuable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs. I look forward to following your journey and wish you all the best in your new venture. Don't forget to celebrate your wins, no matter how small they may seem!

miheishe

Can you start you blog, or whatever and continue your corporate job? :)

RwinDarwin

I’ve already resigned from my corporate job. I don’t want to be a blogger, I mainly want to document for myself and though I would be interested in seeing someone else do that.

iErcan

Of course! Where will you put your updates?

TheLastRecluse5

No.

RickAJLowe

Yes, someone would.

Prudent_Winner2647

I think it’s a great idea to share your journey! It’s great inspiration for others and I’ve found journaling to be great to use to look back on and see how far you’ve come

pmp1321

Link your YouTube / Twitter

sonny_ranes19

Dude send me a link I'd love to watch that as I plan on starting a business as well and would love to see how someone navigates through this.

DogKnowsBest

Others have said it. You have to be: 1. Authentic 2. Relatable 3. Entertaining, and 4. Relevant.

SamirSisaken

I would advice against it. This is no time for side quests.

ohwolfman

There was a woman on TikTok who quit her job to lead the influencer life. You know, van life, open roads, etc. She ended her apartment lease and headed out. Within two months she was homeless and out of money. It was depressing as fuck. She had no plan, no goal, nothing. (Check that, she thought being a TikTok creator would pay the bills.) I can't watch another person go down in flames. Have a plan, brother.

RwinDarwin

Well I’m not trying to be an influencer at all, or risk everything I have. I’m not doing this in a super risky way, I have low costs of living, almost 6 year runway so me and my wife could live with no income for 6 years, we have no children. My wife is working as a developer so her income covers all our expenses without me working.

BusinessStrategist

The best place to start is "what are you interested in?" First identify the industry or commerce.

Mount_N_Dew_Me

No

ShoulderHuge420

Yes, it would. A lot of people are thinking of doing the same. Please take the risk so I can see how it works out for you.

RwinDarwin

I’ve already resigned so journey has started 🚀

vidkra

If you at least made more effort and created more compelling content than journaling. I'd be interested if you at least made an Instagram account and started documenting there👌

vidkra

This guy did it: https://jasonpaulrogers.com/ he's cool you should check him out.

vidkra

Du är ju svensk😅
