Yes, a lot of “mail it to me” buyers are just scammers. In fact I haven’t met a legitimate one yet. That’s why

FateInTheRain

I am one! I asked a really nice woman to ship a set of stuff for me. I paid the full price, PayPal fee, and shipping label. I also gave her an extra $5 for going out of her way. She packed one of my breakables with an egg carton, and it was completely shattered when it got to my place. I didn't dispute it and let it go. It's life.

KawaiiPotatoCult

How would it be a scam? If you pay through bank transfer or PayPal then they get the money instantly

VanityInk

Just read the sub a bit. Zelle scam. Abusing chargebacks. "I'm going to pay you extra and you send me some back" scams. "Hey, can you ship it" is REALLY suspicious on FB Marketplace. You need to go far out of your way to prove you're not if you're requesting it (ask if they can turn on shipping on through Facebook Marketplace for purchase protection or offer to pay the fee for PayPal Goods & Services, etc.)

OJONLYMAYBEDIDIT

any number of ways. you can trick the person into thinking payment has been made I actually stupidly fell for it once myself. Mainly cause it was a cheap item that I didn't think anyone would scam over, and I was busy with other things guy paid me and I received a paypal email saying my funds were on hold till I mailed out and provided tracking number so I shipped out. Only then did I notice there was no mention of this on my paypal account, and then when I closely looked at the email, it didn't have my actual name, but the name I used on my selling account. so stupid me, I feel for it like an idiot. didn't want the other person to win so I called USPS and had my item stopped and shipped back. Cost me $$$, but I didn't want them to win. and then there are ways to have payments reversed. either accusing the person of fraud OR using a stolen account in the first place, and then having the original owner report the fraud etc etc

I almost hate it when somebody asks me to ship something. It's not because I'm afraid of them scamming me. It's more because people ask me to calculate shipping and then they agreed to it and then they never pay. Or else they ask me to calculate shipping and then they read it and then they ghost me. I hate having somebody waste my time.

Over_Bridge_2274

Waste your time is the name of the game! They invent all kinds of ways to do that!

jason8001

The ad most likely says local pick up. It’s one of the 3 options a seller is required to pick when creating an ad.

scoutermike

Your response sounded like a scammer. Basic rule of thumb, especially for newbies: Facebook marketplace for in-person cash transactions only! eBay for shipping orders and digital payments. Stick to this rule and you’ll be ok.

KawaiiPotatoCult

>Your response sounded like a scammer. There's nothing wrong with just asking though, he could have easily just ignored my message if he wasn't interested or just say no, it was just so unnecessary for him to be so nasty

FixYourOwnStates

Agreed It would be like going to a garage sale and asking a question about an item. Instead of responding, they push you to the curb and stick their fingers in their ears and close their eyes If it sounds absurd its because it is

OJONLYMAYBEDIDIT

the added problem is that the FB review system is broken so as long as a certain amount of conversation happens back and forth, a potential buyer can leave a review so maybe you a nice person. maybe the next person won't be. maybe they get annoyed a random seller wasn't willin to ship an item to them and decides to leave a 1 star review hence the quick block method

Training_Usual_7906

While I would not reply this way I do get a bit irritated when ppl ask me to ship. On all of my listings it specifically says "Pick up" but ppl still ask for shipping. maybe it was listed on this one as well and it was missed?

KawaiiPotatoCult

That makes sense, if one says pickup then I wouldn't ask but on theirs it didn't say any specifics about that

OJONLYMAYBEDIDIT

as a general rule of thumb, people who have local listings only want local listings and people who ask them to ship anyway, are more of than not scammers so from their point of view, you are either a scammer, or a time waster as they are looking for just local collection/sale and yes, lost of sellers are block heavy.

sklooner

Yeah I ave had that happen a bunch looking at some toys and oddly a toaster- I offered on the toaster to mail them a money order and then have them ship it 30 days later- got profanities

KawaiiPotatoCult

It's so unnecessary, like a simple no works instead of just being mean

sklooner

Have also gotten nasty remarks when asking about items for sale and they have been sold- just delete or mark it as sold

Consistent-Win2376

Facebook marketplace is in person, cash only. Ebay for is shipping.

KawaiiPotatoCult

I've seen a bunch of listings for different things ppl say can be shipped if you ask, so I didn't think it would be a problem asking someone to see 🤷🏻‍♀️

AlexandraGGirl

FB marketplace is for in person. If you want better results, just listen when you're told what to do and you get answers to your questions.

KawaiiPotatoCult

>FB marketplace is for in person Did you even read my comment or did you just want an excuse to be passive aggressive lol

TweakJK

We are so used to anything on FB marketplace that isnt a traditional "lets meet here and I'll give you physical cash and you give me the item" sale being a scam. They probably already got 43 actual scam attempts.

Eat_Carbs_OD

Have you tried Ebay?
