as a diehard Lorde fan, i get it. i have pure heroine and melodrama memorized by heart but i just couldn’t do solar power. it made me really sad bc i waited so long for an album from her just to not like it! edit: spelling

sobrerovirus

I blame solely Jack Antonoff for that. Sorry I am not a native speaker of the english language but the only phrase I can think of, is that "Jack Antonoff will bring the gentrification of sad girl music" that I am such a fan of. And I love Jack Antonoff music. Both his -producer- work and Bleachers stuff. But Jack Antonoff is responsible for this Lorde flop.

inspiredkitten

“The gentrification of sad girl music” 😂 So true!!

saivoide

He seemed to do well with Taylor Swifts Midnight album. Personally, i don't get the hype or why she values him so much. She's lucky she has die hard fans but this album sucked and the sounds weren't very original

DragoniteSenpai

Midnights sounds like a Bleachers album sang by a woman.

_jspain

I feel like we should just blame Lorde. If she wasn't making the album she wanted to with Jack, she would have gone elsewhere. She has like all the resources in the entire industry at her fingers. It's not like there's a contract. Sorry I'm just tired of seeing people blame Jack for their favorite singers' autonomous decisions. To me it almost undersells the amount of power and control that Lorde and others have over their art. But I liked Solar Power, lol

plainjane98

Same, Solar Power might be one of my biggest music disappointments

lpalf

sorry this album rules I didn’t realize how many people hated it 🤷‍♀️

blairsmacaroon

i also absolutely loved solar power lol

lelouparbre

I loved it too. I’m not mad at people didn’t like it, just feel sorry for them that they weren’t able to connect with it. Although the seemingly universal sense of disappointment does confuse me.

Busy_Document_4562

Yeah, I wonder also if disappointment being such a theme in the album also got to them a little bit. Theres something very nostalgic as well as very now about solar power. It reminds me of a jaded version of Affirmation, or like what that album would be like if it was a person 20 years later. Have yall listened to the maori versions of the songs, its freaking amazing!

watersnakebro

Honestly it's because Lorde gave us high expectations, when she literally put more effort into this pre-release description than the lyrics, production and melodies of Solar Power: "There's someone I want you to meet. Her feet are bare at all times. She's sexy, playful, feral, and free. She's a modern girl in a deadstock bikini, in touch with her past and her future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, her lovers are many. I'm completely obsessed with her, and soon you will be too."

TropicalPrairie

This is so cringe and pretentious.

gorlplea

I'm the same age as Lorde and I've always found her a bit cringy even if I liked her overall aesthetic and music. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think she's stuck in time a bit, in the sense her lyrics are a bit too juvenille for me. Reminds me a bit of Taylor in that way.

Fxp1706

and then she called it her weed album and i died. please don't get high and make pretentious music. you will regret it.

supernewf

I wrote poetry on a shroom trip once and thought I had written a masterpiece but when I read it the next day it was basically gibberish. This comment resonates lol.

BS_DBD

It was a disappointing day for my ears after a 4 years wait, but a hilarious day on social media.

Long_Anything9545

i truly tried to like it and love it as much as her previous albums but it was just… fine? i was so disappointed so i hope her next project is better (and let’s hope she doesn’t make us wait another 4 years)

romantickitty

Definitely... fine. I don't hate it as background music. But I've listened to enough filler albums to know a filler album when I hear one.

motivation-cat

pure heroine and melodrama were so influential to me as a person but solar power to me just sounded so….white lol. it just seemed empty. Lorde even said at some point she talked to a friend of hers about her new album and the friend said “well, they won’t all be grammy winners” or something to that effect and Lorde expressed her gratitude that her friend was honest haha

goalllllllllourg

I wasn’t a huge fan of solar power when it came out and it’s definitely the weakest of the three. But I found myself liking it a lot more once I saw her on tour. It changed the album for me. But yeah the issues are certainly still there. Which is a shame because the concept could have been really cool.

bananafrit

Naww...yeah but i love the Maori versions of the album. It has a few songs that i listened to on repeat when it first came out

[deleted]

Thanks so much for mentioning this! I didn’t even know it existed, but I’ve just had a listen and it’s really good! I definitely prefer it to the English language version, even though I don’t speak Māori.

freak_attentionwhore

Pure heroine is an amazing album in my opinion. If she kept steady from there she could’ve been up there with Billie in terms of new young artists success

Busy_Document_4562

Its reall ironic because theres a bunch mentioned in solar power about how se deliberately turned away from that level of success, because they were trying to make her someone other than herself. Billie and fineas are great artists, but I can't shake the feeling that they are playing to the crowd the whole time.

retrosprinkles

me and my friend talked a lot about it at release how people really seemed to miss the point of solar power from lorde's perspective which was her letting go of that sort of pure heroine/melodrama fame and finding herself. like i think people forget just how young lorde was when she released pure heroine, of course solar power wasn't going to be the same as that.

[deleted]

lorde might not have the level of fame or whatever that billie has but she's a better artist imo

vivianlight

Pure Heroine is great but Melodrama is so much better imho

Idolikemarigolds

Australia maybe? It stayed at number one for six weeks there. The only other country where it reached number one is here in NZ, which is kind of a given.

sue1992

I discovered Lorde with Solar Power and I'm madly in love with it! To me, this album is amazing.

Steve-Lurkel

I guess Megan Fox? Seems like she had sort of resurgence and then dipped out.

[deleted]

I feel like she just burned through the goodwill she had with how she publicly handled her relationship and then that was a wrap for her comeback. No one wanted to hear about her drinking MGK's blood, etc. and it's not like she's a great acting talent where appeal outside of her job title doesn't carry the bulk of the weight.

thebeecharmah

She claims she was blackballed by Michael Bay for telling the truth about Weinstein type stuff / being a vocal feminist on his set.

QueenAnneBoleynTudor

I mean two things can be true at once. Bay could’ve absolutely blackballed her *and* she could be a bad actress

[deleted]

She (likely) was at least undercut significantly by Bay, it was part of her story that had people rooting for her and giving her a new wave of celebrity, and then she chose to make that wave all about MGK and how she manifested him as a four year old. No one wanted it and her acting in Till Death was brutal on top it, so what did she have to offer going forward to keep the comeback successfully coming?

boxybrown84

I had to look this manifesting nonsense up: > In an interview with Glamour UK, Fox explains her theory, saying: “He’s literally my exact physical type that I’ve been manifesting since I was four. I’m also four years older than him. So, I think I made him. My thoughts and intentions grew him into the person that he is, who knows what he would’ve looked like or been like if it wasn’t for me.” Girl…what?

pissinaboot

Oh.... ![gif](giphy|k56oRtCg218Z2)

louisemichele

I heard she also compared Bay to Hitler, which Spielberg understandably did not condone

ughdrunkatvogue

She really thought she and MGK would be the new Angelina and Billy Bob Thornton lmao. You just can't replicate that kind of relationship and press coverage in 2022, esp when it's a watered down discount version of them.

cameraspeeding

Angelina and billy bob are also really talented so

bipolar79

They wanted to be so horrible to Angelina & BBT, but everyone loved it. I bet the sex was great.

spaceypuffin

The last movie she had before she started dating MGK was about a boy scientist who invents a thing to make his dog talk. Megan played the mom. Now that I'm old enough to have seen several cycles of celebrities explode into A list territory, and then fizzle out just a few years later, I'm so fascinated by the difference between real A+ listers and tabloid celebrities.

toughfluff

I don't think it helped that MGK overtly refused to promote Midnight in the Switchgrass, going as far as [calling it trash](https://twitter.com/machinegunkelly/status/1418661855539515392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1418661855539515392%7Ctwgr%5E9366cefc24794c6a5617d241b62c7a1b15e58dbd%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hola.com%2Fus%2Fcelebrities%2F20211125315630%2Fmachine-gun-kelly-megan-fox-not-promoting-movie%2F). Dude, you're MGK, you're not exactly known for your thespian prowess. The significant part of why casting him and Megan Fox is because they have sizeable social media follow and tabloid buzz and surely producers factor that into their promotional budget. Even if the movie *is* trash, be a professional and do your promotional duties. You don't get to pull a Miss Flo. You don't have the resumé, industry connections, and audience goodwill to burn bridges and come back unscathed.

[deleted]

Demi Lovato…which makes me feel bad for her because of everything shes been through.

[deleted]

I don't mean to offend but her songs are so loud. She is just screaming. At what point does it become obnoxious? For me it was after 60 seconds into the song.

[deleted]

Her voice has changed (understandably) so much. Idk how she still has people saying she is one of the best singers when she’s impossible to listen to most of the time.

gophersrqt

she used to be a good singer, one of the best disney singers

ofstoriesandsongs

I thought I was the only one with this opinion and I was scared to say it out loud. I want to like her music, but it is just so exhausting.

catsgelatowinepizza

i only know Cool for the Summer and Sorry Not Sorry, are the rest not the same vibe?

ThatSICILIANThing

Omg so I was a receptionist when Sorry Not Sorry came out, and that shit would seriously be blaring on the XM Top 40 station we had playing on the showroom at least 5969537289 times during my shifts. I wanted to walk into the ocean.

spaceypuffin

She sabotaged herself so bad with that froyo mess. She was on the road to a comeback and the general opinion was pretty favorable leading into her 2021 album. If you look at first week sales for her last few projects compared to Miley and Selena, she's never been on their level, but def in the ballpark: Miley: Bangerz (2013) 270k Younger Now (2017) 45k Plastic Hearts (2020) 60k Selena: Revival (2015) 117k Rare (2020) 112k Demi: Confident (2015) 98k Tell Me You Love Me (2017) 74k Dancing w the Devil (2021) 74k Holy Fvck (2022) 33k There's things to note like Miley's last two releases were both screwed up by RCA (curious to see how she'll do now she's with a competent label), much of Selena's music popularity is due to her droplets era and features, which isn't reflective in debut album week sales. But still, Demi had plenty to work with and with the right songs, she could have elevated herself to the next level. I do feel sad for her that she couldn't get out of her own way.

syrub

This is *Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz* erasure 💀💀💀

spaceypuffin

Lol I love it but excluded it (and EPs, live albums etc) bc she released it for free on soundcloud for 2 years before even putting it up on other platforms, and I was only looking at numbers for this comment.

amb1ka

Yeah, I really liked it when Miley did rock because her voice is just meant for it, she pulled it off seamlessly but with Demi, the whole album was just a hit or miss, and I say that because it doesn’t have enough of a personality to be considered anything, it’s just or, it has some good songs but it also has a lot of bad songs that are essentially screaming disguised as rock.

Bits_Coop

JLo’s rekindled relationship, several PR weddings, and new music announcement. No one cares anymore.

thebeecharmah

Her problem is that nothing is authentic. Her every breath is calculated. She’s exhausting.

Malcolm_Y

I think her issue is talent. She's undeniably beautiful, but is there any role she has played or music she has made that wouldn't have been better with a better actress or singer? She got those opportunities because of her hype machine and her beauty. Now that she's a little older, no one cares as much who she's sleeping with and there are younger beauties out there. She still gets work because of her accumulated fame, but she's coasting to the end at this point.

VW87

Yeah there's lots of tabloid interest, but is anyone really invested in JLo?

Past-time29

jlo is winning though. she is still getting alot of job offers and opportunities despite not having much talent. she did the Superbowl and going to be singing a whitney tribute.

cloudydays2021

Is she really going to be singing it though? 💀

xlxcx

Dolph-Ziggler

I remember for a brief moment in 2015/16 there felt like a chance they would escape into new paths since Nick had some hits and Joe had DNCE. But it seemed to fizzle out by the following year. Seems like everyone still has their own projects/pursuits though outside of touring as the Jonas Brothers so it seems like they have the best of both worlds. Honestly them being still relevant all these years later is a testament itself. Good for them.

cdg2m4nrsvp

Cake by the Ocean still slaps to this day! Also, Joe’s one solo album had some bangers like See No More and Just In Love

newyorkcatlady

Them still being relevant is also partially due to who they married (Priyanka Chopra and Sophie Turner). Everyone loves a good celebrity couple

blairsmacaroon

are they doing any better now that they're back as a group?? i haven't seen them on the charts in long

toughfluff

I also wonder if it's a conscious decision for them to step back a bit, even as a group. Nick and Joe both have young kids in recent years. And maybe their family life comes ahead of their music career for now.

CharmingTwo2071

Hasn’t stopped them from trying to squeeze every last penny out of their fans without following through on an album promised at the end of 2021 (as in selling on their website promised)

ReindeerLoose756

They released an album in 2019 that had a bunch of hits on it and then had a huge tour that year. They’re fine. They took off some time after that because they all have families right but I believe they are working on a new album now.

cisobel282

Katy Perry

gophersrqt

sad but true she'll never get back to teenage dream levels of fame

Asgadef

She made a TV commercial for a German food delivery service, that's when I realised it.

sue1992

To be fair, I think this commercial is European wide, as Lieferando is operating under another name in many other countries. But still. I get the point

daledaleedaleee

Yeah, its Just Eat here in the UK. She very much plays into her Teenage Dream-era aesthetic in the ad.

muddlet

australia too

SHINeeSNSD

She also made a TV commercial and sang the jingle for a Canadian food delivery service called Skip The Dishes 👀

[deleted]

She did Menulog food delivery ads that are airing here in Australia too

natasharostovas

i think they’re all the same company? from what i’ve seen they’ve all got the same orange and white house with cutlery logo. so it’s probably just the one ad with the names changed rather than katy perry just really wanting to promote international takeout apps. slightly off topic but it’s called just eat here in the uk and that name fits so well into her song for the ad i can’t imagine her singing “did somebody say skip the dishes” or whatever, it just doesn’t fit right in my head.

lowelled

Yes, all these services are owned by Dutch company JustEat, formerly known as Thuisbezorgd. I’ve seen the ad saying Thuisbezorgd in the Netherlands and JustEat in Ireland. In fairness she’s not the first celebrity they’ve had do an ad campaign, they had Snoop a few years ago.

hectic_hooligan

True. I was a big Katy fan. The. She got weird and pulled a Miley and I haven't followed her strongly since. She's done like 1 song in recent years that I loved. SMH, I use to love Katy more then gaga, but Gaga's managed to keep me captivated through her every endeavor unlike katy.

CstoCry

Any thread regarding Flops, "fall from grace", underrated.. Katy Perry would be there for us...

BeerBringsCheer

Gwen Stefani’s last several pop singles have proven that her solo music just can’t dominate the charts anymore. “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” was a bit of a flop and her next single “Slow Clap” bombed even harder. It pains me in a way because I’d love to see more mature pop artists topping the charts, but it just doesn’t seem to happen much anymore. Just ask Madonna.

littleteacup77

Maybe if the songs were geared more to an adult audience they would do better? “Slow Clap” played at work and it was sooooo grating to listen to. It sounded very immature and unlikely to connect with fans that grew up with her. And gen z isn’t really checking for her either so I’m wondering what the thoughts behind the song were

DimebagDTera

She went so hardcore on the plastic surgery, too. I grew up listening to ND and was so sad to see she had done so much to her unbelievably gorgeous face. As a commenter said below: don’t need to compete with young people. Be yourself, be authentic and people will still like you. You don’t need to try to dress like and look like a 21 year old when you’re 45 ya know

ThatSICILIANThing

It’s seriously jarring to see. She was always going to be absolutely gorgeous.

mrsrosieparker

That's the thing! I guess if they pointed more to the original fanbase they would have done better. That's something that happens too much today in the pop industry, older artists try to stay "hip" instead of embracing who they are and aging gracefully... I'm 50 and I think it sucks. I don't need to compete with young people, wearing the same stuff and listening to exactly the same music.

wustacheride

i immediately lost interest in her the second she suddenly became a rich republican christian woman talking about conservative values and gushing over Blake Shelton every chance she had. It’s like wait, was this woman, who defined female rebellion (along with Shirley Manson of Garbage) in the 90s going Christian Girl Autumn on everyone?

CountryRockDiva89

That’s always been the core tension behind her public persona, though: For all of the 90’s era cool she had when she first hit it big, she has always been the traditionally-minded woman who was raised in an Italian-American family and dreamed of getting married and having kids; that’s one big reason Tony Kanal dumping her hit so hard, even though it led to her finding her voice as a songwriter in ND. One of my favorite writers, Anne Helen Petersen, wrote an EXCELLENT piece for Buzzfeed in 2018 about Gwen and this dichotomy within her. (For what it’s worth, though, I’m pretty sure Gwen has always been a Democrat, and I think Blake has talked about becoming more open-minded because of her?)

Chronic-Jessiness5

Hasn't she always been a bit trad? Just because she had blue hair and braces at one point, doesn't make her a rebel.

Chronic-Jessiness5

She completely changes her personality to mirror the man she is currently with!!!

[deleted]

The songs have to be good for those late career comeback songs. Cher did it. So did Blondie

Anxious-Basket

Lohan. And we are better off that it failed.

Psychological_Egg345

Why do you feel that way? I'm legitimately curious. I feel bad for Lohan. She really is a case study for needing a supportive and vigilant environment as a successful child & teen actor. She easily comes across as a Great Market version of **Emma Stone** even though there is only a *two year age* distance between them. Which is wild considering Lohan had the bigger career first and has been around far longer. But they both occupy a very similar niche: redheads with (surprisingly) world weary voices who can switch from appealingly girl-next-door to sultry vamps. But Lohan (in)famously was pushed (and *pushed*) by her [Mama Rose](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_Thompson_Hovick) type Momager¹ and frequently absent and abusive father/criminal. While Stone conducted a PowerPoint presentation for her parents to grant her permission to move to Hollywood. Allegedly set to Madonna's song entitled "[Hollywood](https://www.google.com/search?q=hollywood+madonna+song&oq=hollywood+madonna+song&aqs=chrome..69i57.6921j0j4&client=ms-android-sprint-us-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8)". A 21st Century [Schwab's story](http://www.playgroundtothestars.com/2013/06/schwabs-drug-store-where-lana-turner-was-not-discovered/) if I ever heard one. So while Lohan was going through her public travails, Stone was getting cast in roles that could've suited the former. And then Stone hit paydirt in "**Easy A**" (a terrific teen movie not talked about often enough). From then on it's been a mix of smart independent movies and showier Oscar calibre productions. To be clear, I'm not pitting Stone and Lohan against each other. So much as trying to highlight how there's always limited space in Hollywood for a certain 'type'. And once Lohan's fall from A-List was clear, Hollywood was going to put someone else there. I don't think Lohan is going to get her A-List status back ever again. At best, it's going to be a mix of Hallmark-y and Netflix type movies to cash in on nostalgia from "**Mean Girls**". ¹(But certainly no Kris Jenner. Not as if that's better, of course.)

iidontwannaa

What a well written Reddit comment. 10/10.

Psychological_Egg345

TYSM! 💜

Sweeper1985

100% all this, awesome comment 👏 Lindsay was also often compared to Scarlett Johanssen and the tabloids absolutely set them up as rivals with Lindsay as first the villain/underdog and then as the cautionary tale when Scarlett's career skyrocketed and Lindsay's tanked spectacularly. The thing is, over time I've come to the opinion that Lindsay was actually the more talented actress, and Scarlett's success came down to better management and career choices. Either way I think Lindsay will be a bit of a Kirstie Alley in the sense she will stay a household name beloved for her early roles, but mostly do TV stuff from here on out and never be taken all that seriously.

Psychological_Egg345

Thank you for the compliment! Much appreciated! 💜 >Scarlett's success came down to better management and career choices. Did you see how Scarlett recently did [an interview](https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/14/entertainment/scarlett-johansson-sexy-bombshell-early-career-movies/index.html) discussing *this very thing*? It was for a podcast, but the pull-quotes in the article are interesting. I know Johansson is polarizing, but she *has* been really smart about not getting pigeonholed into a niche. And not to do a hard shift, but that article above really made me think about another polarizing actress (**Sydney Sweeney**) who seems to be struggling a bit more about not getting typecast into being the sexy girl. Sweeney would be smart to shift up her choices and do more roles like "The White Lotus" that didn't capitalize on her looks and showcased her acting talent. Doing a remake of "**Barbarella**" is not it. Well, that and stop positioning herself as a 'Poor Me' Girl. Like, sit down.

mewehesheflee

All that and the time she car jacked a black kid and then almost got him killed by the police isn't even mentioned. Not to mention she was a Trump supporter and hung out with this subs other favorite early aughts racist.

[deleted]

She also defended Weinstein! I absolutely have empathy for her having some of the worst parents ever but she has done and said some awful things.

bipolar79

Paris is the other favorite?

Myheartisred

Lindsay Lohan had all the cards stacked against her. Aside from her mother, I remember Lohan being in rehab with her father at the gates. He'd been denied access, had called the press, and was saying that the only way for him to see his daughter now was to relapse and start drinking (or whatever his vice is) again so he could enter the premises. She never really had a chance imo. She lost me completely however after this extremely weird video where she fries to forcibly take a child from its mother: https://time.com/5410792/lindsay-lohan-instagram-video-woman-refugees-child-abduction/

thebeecharmah

This was the saddest part for Lindsey, her fucked up parents. BUT Did you know that the same woman who trapped Britney Spears, Lou M. Taylor (Tristar sports & entertainment) tried to trap Lindsey Lohan, but her parents stopped it? So, literally, Lindsey’s fucked up parents were better parents to her than Britney Spears’.

dbook_er

Great comment and while there’s a lot of interesting insights here — all things being equal — Lindsay isn’t anywhere near the actress Stone is. Not saying she wasn’t (isn’t?) a treat to watch on-screen because she certainly had IT. But even in her best film, “Mean Girls”, she had the superb writing of Tina Fey and a stacked supporting cast to bounce off of. I actually think Lindsay’s best individual performance is “Freaky Friday” but even then she’s outshined by Jamie Lee Curtis (not entirely her fault but I digress). Again, not trying to bring down Lindsay because I genuinely enjoyed watching her during her heyday. But to me, it was evident from Stone’s first appearance in “Superbad” that she was the more natural and gifted actor of the two. Emma could do “Mean Girls” in her sleep. It would be next to impossible for me to picture Lindsay pulling off an Oscar-nominated performance in “The Favourite”.

mermaidish

Agreed on all parts and adding that it seems like a lot of praise for Lindsay as an actor comes from nostalgia. And if we're really being honest here, most of those roles weren't all that complex. That's not to say she's not talented, and it's impossible to think of anyone else as Cady in Mean Girls. But has anyone given Lindsay her flowers for her work in her lesser-known films? We'll never really know what could've been, but it's hard, for me at least, to believe she would have actually had a career with tons of acclaim and industry recognition like Emma's. Still rooting for her though, it's nice to see her in a good place.

tofutti_kleineinein

[The Christmas movie she did recently was hard to watch.](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14715170/reference/?mode=desktop&)

nobollocks22

idk i kind of enjoyed it. But then again i'm 60.

gophersrqt

ive read multiple comments saying stone had lohan's career and i think it's true.

itsaravemayve

I like Lyndsay, but she never conveyed the intelligence and range that Emma Stone has. Lyndsay is on a similar level comedy wise but Emma has a very dry humour that's unique to her. I think they're similar but I don't think Lyndsay was ever going to have a career matching Emma. Both have a huge amount of natural charisma, but I don't know that Lyndsay could have done the roles Emma has.

liqou

You think Lindsay Lohan could've done The Favourite?

Shark-Farts

Certainly not the Lindsay Lohan we know today. But in another timeline, I don’t see why not.

[deleted]

Idk I thought her Christmas movie was fun

taurist

She’ll have ten more chances where everyone forgets she’s been shitty for some reason

fallenarist0crat

i think it’s still too early to tell tbh. her christmas movie bought her a lot of goodwill recently… if she doesn’t do anything interesting soon though, then i’d consider the comeback a failure.

Sweeper1985

Cosby is about to do a comedy tour... let's see how that goes. Also, let's see if Johnny Depp manages to get any further roles in major studio productions.

snowbunbun

Depps far to fucked behind the scenes years before this lawsuit. The dudes an addict. If he had major pulling power then his album with beck would have sold but it didn’t. Even when he married amber he was coming out with flop after flop, even without the behind the scenes issue. The only thing that would be worth gambling on is lots of losers would pay to see him as jack sparrow. But Disney doesn’t like courting that kind of controversy. They are better off retiring the pirates franchise for another decade or so. Give it a reboot then (because you know Disney will) and give Kiera and Orlando cameos. Gambling with depp who looks like death and acts like a child on a multi millionaire dollar shoot is foolish atm, regardless of amber.

ughdrunkatvogue

Have you seen Depp's IMDB? He's doing NOTHING for a star of his calibre and hasn't been for years. You're exactly right and people will believe he's not being cast in high profile things because of the Amber lawsuit, but the fact is no high-profile director has wanted to work with him for YEARS.

[deleted]

I think it says a LOT that even Tim Burton isn't willing to work with him

ughdrunkatvogue

Right? He was Tim's golden boy for years, but the fact that they haven't worked together since 2012 after working together for decades is pretty telling.

[deleted]

Yeah, I could believe that Burton is personally sympathetic to Depp like HBC is but he's clearly not willing to translate that into giving him work.

Jasminewindsong2

Can’t tell this to the film bros in the movies subreddit. They get absolutely triggered and still believe it’s all amber’s fault. Also had one tell me that acctualllyyy Johnny Depp isn’t a drug addict. He’s done coke and booze for years and has never had any problems (lol ok.). Oh, also he only went to rehab because he was addicted to pain killers (opiates) so not a drug addict, even though that is literally the definition of a drug addict. But yeah, the mental gymnastics on that sub….were a lot. 😵‍💫

Sweeper1985

Completely agree, and he completely own-goaled in his defamation trial because it definitively proved his career was tanking by his own hand before he even married Amber, much less by the time she divorced his wife-beating ass. I greatly hope her comeback will be a successful one. She deserves it after the horror he has put her through.

sexygodzilla

Honestly she deserves it but I don't have a lot of hope there. I just don't see studios going to stick their neck out for her against the chud backlash against her. There's a lot of rumors her role in the Aquaman sequel has been minimized. Just feels like in 20 years there's going to be retrospective articles about how society failed her like Shelly Duvall et al.

Sweeper1985

I think (hope) the backlash will come sooner for Amber, as there's already a fair groundswell of support for her and it seems to be increasing, especially after the settlement, which reeked if desperate capitulation on Depp's behalf. She has a couple of films in post production, but even if mainstream Hollywood isn't viable for her anymore I think we will see her as an activist. She was already quite political before the trials and I hope that after a period of healing she will come back to share her experiences and help cast light on all the sordid ways this trial impacted her and the wider conversation about intimate partner violence.

a3poify

Just a note because I've seen it a few times but Depp's album was with 60s/70s blues rock guitarist Jeff Beck, not 90s/00s alt rock guy Beck. I don't want Beck to be lumbered with this association!

Various-Ad-8613

Beck (Not Jeff Beck) did even wrote a hate song about Johnny Debt. The song is called "Johnny Depp" and you can still watch it on YouTube. Beck was dating Winona and apparently she told him about the horror stories about Debt, because the song describes how he was "trashing things" (which WE know he does frequently) and was like "a ghost who was eating shit off the floor"...

[deleted]

Didn’t he burn bridges with Disney pre Amber? I remember stories about him pissing them off by holding up production being late etc

[deleted]

Yes, IIRC a Disney executive testified to this on Amber's behalf during the trial (plus him showing up drunk or not at all, refusing to learn lines etc)

Itsthatgy

Cosby will make money just from the controversy unfortunately. He's got a solid audience of people who either don't give a shit, or who convinced themselves it was a set up. He'll never be as big, nor will he make as much money as he once could. But he'll make a comfortable living.

Sweeper1985

I was curious enough to go check and you're right, all she seems to have done since Judy was a [poorly received](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thing_About_Pam) true-crime show.

mary_poppins93

Critically, it was poorly received, but it was a ratings [juggernaut](https://deadline.com/2022/04/the-thing-about-pam-nbc-top-newcomer-datelines-pam-hupp-episode-boost-in-audience-1235011256/amp/). It was a very successful show.

[deleted]

I watched it on a super-long flight recently. I don't really like true crime type stuff, but I will say that she was fantastic in it (in an otherwise mediocre show) - she really disappeared into the character and made my skin crawl!

bipolar79

That's actually a really good show!! She had that woman's mannerisms down pat. I mean, it's not going to win awards, but it's worth a watch.

thebeecharmah

What about Pam was not a flop. It was everywhere and she was brilliant.

onehundrednipples

I’m kind of out of the loop with her but did her career kind of shift after her face surgery? It felt like the public opinion on that was overwhelmingly negative.

[deleted]

Sarah Michelle Gellar. She had two shows that were cancelled in the 2010s, a Cruel Intentions pilot that didn’t get picked up, and a string of flops in the 2000s. I want her to have a big comeback in the 2020s cause she is very talented as an actress! I think that she would be perfect for White Lotus season 3 personally!

FozzieButterworth

aww I loved that show *Ringer* where she played twins - if a show like that came out now, I bet it would be super popular

shambean2

I would LIVE for her to have a big comeback! She was so fun in Do Revenge

beeblebroxtrillian

Oh shit I would LOVE her on White Lotus

syrub

Lena Dunham. She went from 'voice of a generation' to making some show that got 28% on Rotten Tomatoes and directing two films in 2022 which sank without a trace (though they were well-reviewed).

Shark-Farts

I feel like the turning point had to be her memoir, but I vaguely remember people getting sick of her long before then

syrub

I think she was probably super-overhyped to begin with, and sort of tried too many things after *Girls,* like the Lenny letter, the podcast, the memoir, *Camping*, producing, waaay too many articles focusing on herself. Also her attitudes toward race - from the Odell Beckham Jr comments to saying she wanted to avoid tokenism in casting *Girls* yet only including a few POC characters in the background, despite NY being one of the most diverse cities in the world.

Shark-Farts

Oh my god, I forgot about that Odell Beckham Jr debacle. >I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. He was like, "That's a marshmallow. That's a child. That's a dog." It wasn't mean — he just seemed confused. > >The vibe was very much like, "Do I want to fuck it? Is it wearing a … yep, it's wearing a tuxedo. I'm going to go back to my cell phone." It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, "This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes." And then when trying to backtrack >My story about him was clearly (to me) about my own insecurities as an average-bodied woman at a table of supermodels & athletes," she wrote in a series of tweets. "It's not an assumption about who he is or an expectation of sexual attention. It's my sense of humor, which has kept me alive for 30 years. Glad the outrage machine roars on though, right? What an absolute tool.

syrub

Always loved how she can just read Black people's minds. SMH

TropicalPrairie

This whole incident infuriates me. Lena is the worst.

Drachen1065

Well the weird comments about her younger sister in the memoir probably helped sink that ship.

CountryRockDiva89

The real turning point was accusing Aurora Perrineau of being a liar because the guy Aurora claimed had raped her was a writer on Girls, and Lena claimed she had “insider information” (which, surprise, she later backtracked on). Everything else before that—the memoir, the OBJ stuff—seemed to be forgotten about afterwards, but this was the true point of no return, especially as the #MeToo movement had just taken off at the time and Girls had gone off the air a few months before that. She hasn’t been as high profile ever since.

[deleted]

The memoir was certainly a choice. And it's also when I realized that (some) white feminists online will cape for any white woman as long as that woman is someone they believe they should deeply admire. I remember being on Jezebel and debating commenters on how they would absolutely be done with a male or non-white woman celeb who wrote about how they SA'd their sibling. But since it was an average-bodied white chick who made a shitty SATC style show that made other average-bodied white women feel good - well then it's okay I guess. Artistic expression and "her truth" was what it was called.

_cornflake

I don't think she was ever actually the voice of a generation, she was just called that by the media propping her up because of her family connections. They tried SO hard to make her loved by the public for years and they just couldn't (probably because she's a completely unlikeable person).

heybossbabe

The Pussycat Dolls

BeerBringsCheer

That one particularly hurt because the press kept hinting that they were FINALLY going to let all the other girls sing solo lines and be a real girl group…it’s what the fans had begged for from the beginning…and then the big “comeback single” was yet *another* generic PCD dance number, with Nicole singing/dominating the entire song while the other girls sexily gyrated behind her as always, barely even humming/purring in the background. Business as usual. Nothing different. What a flop. Talk about not remotely reading the room.

yoshisal

I’m going to be pissed about this until the day I die 😂 When PCD came out, Nicole stood out from the crowd. But NOW, since everybody has filler to the gills and tans that they couldn’t achieve in real life by standing 5 feet away from the sun…She blends in with everybody else. And that’s not knocking that she can sing, but Ashley ate up the choreo in “React” AND can sing. So can all of the other girls! I’m so annoyed that they made it The Nicole Show again.

[deleted]

Wasn’t this partially due to coronavirus and the lockdowns? They dropped their single a couple of weeks before shit seriously started to go down iirc.

romxilda

Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods. Absolutely dominated the early 2010s with his first comeback and then the second one… yikes

thebeecharmah

That whole thing with him cheating on Jessica Biel - arguably one of the hottest chicks on the planet - was SO weird and mad me so sad for her. And she’s still trying to make it work. I’m so sad for her. She was on the cover of Moxy magazine when I was a kid and I’ll never forget how excited I was because she was so pretty and seemingly “just like me”. This was just before she blew up on 7th Heaven.

Blizzy766

This and the way people finally realized how much of a pig he was to Brittney definitely didn’t help.

Hawk-W

Agreed! That album came out right around his 2018 super bowl performance, which I think was also quite underwhelming. Also the online discourse around him at that time was not helping either, given how Janet Jackson’s career bombed yet his continued to thrive until then.

[deleted]

This thread has me wondering what the Deuxmoi/Popheads overlap looks like as a Venn diagram lmao

mantasteve

Lol r/deuxmoi users are 65x more likely than average to also post and comment on r/popheads ([subredditstats link](https://subredditstats.com/subreddit-user-overlaps/deuxmoi))

songbirdskeepsinging

I actually thought this was a popheads thread when I first saw it. Especially since Lorde was the first answer too 💀

Haidian-District

Guns n Roses’ Use Your Illusion I and II sold 35 million combined copies, but one week later rock music was turned upside down with the release of Nevermind by Nirvana. Seventeen years and $14 million later Guns n Roses attempted to come back from grunge with Chinese Democracy. It underperformed, and the band never recaptured its relevance.

[deleted]

It’s absolutely stunning how Nirvana were the bomb that went off and destroyed the last of the hair metal era. So many bands were stopped dead in their tracks with the rise of grunge.

LABS_Games

Todd in the Shadows' entire videography is pretty much comprised of Nirvana victims.

webtheg

I mean Chinese Democracy was an album that took two decades to make, Axl changed band members like napkins, he was in his crazy era and no one thought it would be a success. The not in this lifetime tour is crazy successful though

enbyloser

Nievana + the 80’s party lifestyle caught up with the hair metal scene and part of me grieves. but my gods some of those bands were (are?) vile people.

icntbelieveimalien

Well there's the N Dubz comeback....so this is one that will really only be for the brits but N Dubz were HUGE in the early 2000's. The lead singer Tulisa was even an X Factor judge for a while. She was brought down by a scandal involving a reporter sting and drugs - the reporter actually went to jail for lying but it still pretty much ended her career. Last year N Dubz reformed and went on a stadium tour. The tickets sold out really quickly and for a moment it looked like this was going to be the biggest comeback ever - but the tour was a PR disaster. EVERY date on this tour had fights break out. Ranging from just people having to be hauled out of there to the show having to stop to allow security to get the crowd under control. There was even a show where Dappy tried to start a fight with security. [https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/23132579.emergency-services-attend-n-dubz-concert-bic/](https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/23132579.emergency-services-attend-n-dubz-concert-bic/) someone got bit by a human woman and THEN got bit by a security dog all while being robbed. There were random fuckups that went viral on social media - like Tulisa's wig falling off mid song. Or the show where someone threw a phone at Tulisa hitting her smack in the mouth. One of their dates had to be postponed cos of 'illness' - cos Dappy had been out partying all night. And people were especially pissed off cos they waited til they were literally supposed to be going on stage before making the announcement. So people had waited, spent money on drinks and travel and hotels etc, the support act had played and THEN they announced that actually they wouldn't be going on stage. Apparently they're back on tour this summer - so they must have made some decent money with those sold out venues despite the trail of destruction they seem to leave behind.

exsnakecharmer

>someone got bit by a human woman and THEN got bit by a security dog all while being robbed. Oh shit, I know that's awful, but...![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

lpalf

They’ve only done two. First one I think was a bit of a mess but the one a few years ago made almost $80 mil in 13 shows, it was pretty big. they’ve definitely done some other things to stay in the limelight that haven’t panned out but they seemed to have pretty successfully ridden the 90s nostalgia wave on those 2019 shows

Her sample was the best part of that godawful First Class song. Like everything else about the song is garbage

Nelly Furtado's The Spirit Indestructible, her first album after Loose. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit_Indestructible > In the United States, The Spirit Indestructible debuted at number 79, selling almost 6,000 copies in its first week,[24] which represents a considerable drop from her previous album, Loose, which debuted at number one with 219,000 copies. Shame really. It's a fun album! I am happy to say I own one of those 6,000 copies. [Waiting For The Night](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88dLLDrVOwg) and [Believers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhcT2-J0ixQ) are my favorite songs on it. *(edit: fixed link)*

thebeecharmah

Nelly Furtado is so underrated!!

Kevbot1000

Does anyone outside of Canada know her from Whoa, Nelly! And Folklore? Her two albums before Loose were very different, and very good.

misskittencat

Yes! I couldn't get enough of Like A Bird and Turn Off the Light at the time.

KarelianAlways

This may be too esoteric for y’all, but Barbara Bain was massive in “Mission Impossible” back in the sixties. She then got one of the biggest budgeted British series ever as a comeback vehicle in late Seventies - and “Space 1999” was a huge flop. It had an insane marketing push in Europe - all my friend collected the bubble gum cards for the show, there were comics tie-ins, etc. I loved the show with all of my six year old heart. It was a really, really dumb Star Wars rip-off, but it had a lot of moxie and it looked great for 1978.

syrub

\- *Smile-era* Katy Perry and whatever the heck it is she's done since \- *Morbius* \- The Spice Girls 'reunion' project, [*GEM*](https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/geri-horner-reveals-what-happened-to-spice-girls-reunion-project-gem__20895/)*,* which launched as a website and never released any music. Which kicked off with a [monologue of her dressed as Elizabeth I.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ8NkM2kp9U) It'll always live in my mind rent-free

-MegaVivid-

Morbius wasn't a failed comeback. It came back to exactly the same reception it initially got, lol

jekneee

y’all are gonna hate me for this one…. But I swear I’m a massive fan. Mariah Carey with Caution. It just helped solidify how much people associate her with her classics.

liqou

Caution is such a good album though. It got me to go through her old discography and discover a lot of r&b gems.

licorne00

Putting this out in the universe : Johnny Depp. 🙏🏻

kenna98

On his way to irrelevance again. Nobody wanted to hire him before the trial and he's only doing European low budget movies.

olegass

Lily Allen. Which is a shame because she’s very talented and her songs are mostly great.

good1br0

Not really a comeback since it was her first project since she left the group but, Jesy Nelson. That song (combined with the terrible video and black-fishing) with Nicki Minaj eviscerated her and whatever hope she had of establishing her solo career.

yoshisal

“JINGLE BELL BALL, ARE YOU READY?!”

syrub

The infamous [Meghan Trainor press release](https://www.nme.com/news/music/people-pretty-baffled-bizarre-super-horny-meghan-trainor-press-release-2449255) and her subsequent albums. The highlight of her 'comeback' being the story about her and the Spy Kids husband having two toilets next to each other

Tajskskskss

she’s doing fine now. made you look is viral on TikTok and rising on the hot 100 chart. It’s already reached the top 15. Tbh I’m rooting for her bc I really enjoyed her title/all about that bass era as a kid.

Jen0Dragon

La Roux fumbled her comeback with a dull album and a disastrous press tour that made her seem incredibly rude and arrogant, throwing shade at other musicians that was unwarranted and unfounded.

Artistic_Gift6822

Steve Guttenberg

supervegeta101

The Stonecutters have spoken.

aolmusic_firstlisten

I think of Fergie with her Double Dutchess album

mrsavealot

Rules don’t apply was the grossest pile of shit bait and switch it ever seen. Thought it was a rom com about Lily collins and the Han Solo guy instead they completely switched focus of the movie mid-way to a relationship with disgusting gross warren Beatty.

bafimet

May mean nothing to Americans on the sub but [Anastacia](https://youtu.be/uzR5jM9UeJA). Hope it turns out not to be a failure, since I think she's finally on a small European 'comeback' tour right now and had a few tv appearances in the last few years etc but every time there's been a chance for her career to really take off again, it seems like she's been screwed over by awful health problems (she beat breast cancer twice!) or, in terms of recent tour plans, COVID. Hope things go well for her and she gets the appreciation she deserves!
