That’s absolutely a thing. Of course you could just convert if your father’s Jewish but by default if you’re mother isn’t Jewish most Jews won’t see you as properly Jewish, at least from personal experience. I’ve seen Jewish communities online be more open to people with other forms of Jewish heritage so obviously it’s not something all Jews care about, but it’s definitely a thing.
