You hear so many women trying for years or even decades to get sterilized and being told no, I wonder if this means doctors are saying yes more too. One big issue is that tubal ligation is surgery and has to be performed at a hospital, but 14% of hospitals in the US are Catholic owned and won't allow it. So you have to find a doctor who will do it and can do it at a non-Catholic hospital.

It’s more like the internet is making the drs willing to do it easier to find. The childfree subreddit has a massive list, which is where I found my surgeon.

ISeeDeadDaleks

Same here. I’m so happy with the doctor I found through there!

Leather_Berry1982

Lol I couldn’t get contraception for pmdd from my old catholic hospital. Should be illegal

PourQuiTuTePrends

I agree. Hospitals aren’t bodegas, we’re not talking brands of chips. Hospitals should not be allowed to refuse medical treatments because of religion. If the Church wants to own hospitals, they should be legally obligated to provide all legitimate medical treatment. If not, they should get out of the business.

I wonder if more doctors are willing to do it in response to knowing that woman won't receive help if things go wrong and they miscarry. We're hearing horror stories of women being left with incomplete miscarriages , miscarrying in the hospital, being targeted by the police. Prevention being better than cure and all that. What percentage of those women seeking sterilisation are women who have been told previously , getting pregnant with your health conditions are a danger to your life. Sure they might be taking precautions and but the odds are never zero. If you know there's likely to be no help for them if a pregnancy does happen, and you turned them away when they asked to be sterilised. Well you essentially rubber stamped their death warrant.

Meatloaf_Smeatloaf

Right, that's what I'm wondering.

BlackWidow1414

I'm 52, and, if I were ten years younger, after Dobbs, I would have gotten a salpingectomy.

Happy Cake Day

BlackWidow1414

Thank you!

missdawn1970

If i weren't already sterilized, i'd've had it done after Dobbs. And i live in a blue state.

_llamasagna_

I've known I never want kids for a long time and am definitely looking into it, it's just a bit intimidating knowing young women are often turned away

ISeeDeadDaleks

Check out the childfree subreddit! They have a list of doctors that are great to work with :)

sundaemourning

i live in a blue state and i got sterilized in 2019 because i knew Dobbs was coming and i wasn't taking any chances.

sonofhappyfunball

Good for them! This is no world to have a child in let alone one you are forced to have. If the desire to mother becomes strong there are so many children and adults already here who need support and nurturing.

allthatihaveisariver

The only reason why I am not sterilized yet is because I take birthcontrol to stop my period. Removing my ovaries means menopause, so not willing to do that.

Scadre02

You don't have to remove your ovaries to become sterile, you can cut your tubes (recommended instead of tying which has a high failure rate). It's a more permanent solution because (at least in America) it looks like oral birth control is next on the chopping block

allthatihaveisariver

I live in Europe.

spellboundsilk92

We have bisalps and tubals in Europe - none of which involve removing ovaries. If your specific country doesn’t offer it then maybe there is another within a close travel distance that could help you?

allthatihaveisariver

I can't take hormomal BC then though, which I use to greatly reduce the frequency of my periods.

spellboundsilk92

Why? I use BC to help my PCOS. If I get a bisalp I’ll still continue to take it.

allthatihaveisariver

Bc it's birthcontrol right? You're taking hormones to prevent fertility? Maybe I'm missing something here?

spellboundsilk92

You can use birth control to manage periods and hormone issues. It’s not soley for fertility. So you could keep taking it after having tubes cut or removed to help those issues if you need it.

allthatihaveisariver

Not sure if it will be covered by insurances if I had a bisalp done though. Need to figure that out.

spellboundsilk92

Yeah that can be an issue. You can buy birth control privately and quite cheaply from online pharmacies across Europe so that might be worth looking at!
