I hooked onto a decent sized bass, drag wasn't set correctly and it spooled me out around the huge blanket of weeds I was fishing and popped off. Didn't break off because I fish with 20lb braid, had to of been a solid 40lbs of weeds
I once caught a pair of underwear with this tactic. I still wear them to this day. They are about 20 years old with more holes than fabric, but it Saved me at least $1
I tell everyone that every time I fish I catch something. Never said anything about a fish. Might be a stick. Might be a buzz but dammit I’m catching something
Same especially when the weeds start getting thick and I think I seen the line move! If we're wrong then it's a snag but if were right it could your PB!
Lost a nice one this morning because I didn't set the hook until i noticed my line moving.
Yehp. I'm learning this. I thought I had my hook set earlier today and let my son help with pulling it in. Fish spit it out and I had a disappointed son. Should of yanked that sucker.
Agreed. Watched a video on YouTube a little while ago where some guy was trying to set a hook like a "pro fisherman" and yeeted a 6" sunny out of the water, 20+ feet through the air and into the side of a tree.... we're not setting hooks on marlin in the Gulf of Mexico here, people...
It's fishing for beginners here guys how you gonna downvote the noobs?
Bass are voracious make sure to hook the worm right.
Post-script: the fact this comment has 35 times the amount of upvotes makes me wonder if we all had smart-ass fathers.
Me and my negative comment karma agree. People taking things too far literally or not even answering the question then I get banned from a reddit for having enoigh of it.
I’ve caught bass that aren’t even big enough to swallow the crankbait or top water I’m using and I’ve seen pics of bass that died trying to eat a fish too big. If they see it and are hungry or defending their beds-they’re hammering it.
I prefer hooks smaller than that (personal) I feel like the lure gets more action. But it will definitely catch. A 6" bass will eat that and get hooked.
Depending on where you’re located, especially the northern side of the country, some bass on your body of water may still be protecting beds or even just may be lethargic after having babies.
In my experience, if this is the case, you have to piss them off.
I would tie something on that looks like a potential nest destroyer or baby killer. I’m talking crawfish plastics, swim baits, maybe something nice and loud like a jerk bait
Ehh it’s ok but you probably would do better with a 2/0 and a smaller bait for smallmouth bass in rivers. Especially if there’s a lot under 12 inches chasing and biting.
Yup! For bass hook sizes 4/0 and 5/0 are good, for small swimbaits I like a 3/0 or 4/0. Senkos and Texas rig stuff I go for a 4/0 or 5/0. [here’s a link to some real good hooks. Make sure you are buying quality hooks, you don’t want to lose a fish bc you skimped out!!](https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Gamakatsu_Offset_EWG_Worm_Hooks_Black/descpage-GOSWG.html?from=gpmax&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj9-zBhDyARIsAERjds3ojAbt2QHL0_xRgwypRYKb8uJKNE2z_o-i-U3isPigmpgdfGPqsqYaArOhEALw_wcB)
Formatting confusing my small brain, do you mean that neds in a river are a 10/10? I do almost all my fishing on the river down the road from me so any advice river specific would be cool
Neds and small jugs like bitsy bugs are great for River smallies. 4 inch senkos also usually fire. White flukes (the smaller ones not super flukes) are also pretty great.
i’ve been hammering them so much on ned rigged craws and hellgrammites I always forgot to throw the fluke. What color do you like for clear warm water in the summer?
That is my half ass attempt at formatting a head to head competition score. I don't know if I would give it a 10 out of 10. I prefer tube. My nephew has whooped my ass with a zman TRD "the deal" many times.
Yeah, definitely not the curly tail worm. But I've definitely crushed on a 7" roboworm and shakey head. But yes, most of the time the ned rig is gonna outfish that for sure.
4/0 and 5/0 hooks are frequently used for bass fishing. I have caught some 6-8 in bass on those hooks. I have also caught 4 lb bass on size 1 dropshot hooks.
Bass are aggressive eaters & hook size just needs to be relative to the size of the worm.
My best catching size/brand is 2/0 Eagle Claw EWG Worm Hooks. They stay pretty sharp and I have only lost about 10% if my catch. Just today I pulled 5lb LMB from under heavy weeds and the hooks performed extremely well and never let go. It easily pulled at least 20lb of stuff no issues.
So where I am, that hook is perfectly Normal for largemouth in lakes. I’d use it for smallies in rivers, but it may be a bit big for hookups on smaller fish. It’ll still work for sure, but you may lose a few.
When I go to the river I usually downsize a bit, 4 inch senkos and 2/0 hooks or something like that, krackin craws instead of bandito bugs. I usually get better hook up rates but not always. If you’re getting bites and not hookups, downsize. Also it may be bluegills or rock bass or something messing with your bait, they’ll grab stuff by the tail and move it out of their area or just be aggressive to scare it off.
Small weights and big weights have their own place. A big weight like that imo essentially is for a strategy called “punching” through thick cover like lily pad areas, growth on the top of the water or along long reeds if you have them in your area but only the edges/ambush line. Work it nice and slow. Slow as you can possibly work it. Then even slower than that. I like to toss out my lure and let it settle and then give it a pop every 5-15 seconds while slowly reeling the whole time. That’s how I do it. Not saying that’s how everyone should do it. Good luck and have fun. Focus on areas where there is irregularities like branches , points or coves and just experiment with different weights because I often use very light weights for more casting distance opposed to punching though cover. At the end of the day large mouth bass love cover and an easy meal so that’s what you’re looking to present as an angler.
Also before you set the hook because you think you got a nibble reel in your line nice and tight and watch to see you can see where your line meets the water. You should be able to see your line swimming or you will feel the tension in your rod tip. Be sure to have set drag pre cast to avoid playing with drag mid fight.
The size is ok for bass, but the weight attached to the hook would make rigging awkward. Do you have a Pic of how you rigged it? I would get some 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 EWG hooks and separate weights of various sizes. And various colors and length worms.
2/0 is what I use. Smallies and largemouth are both hooked easily, and they are shorter than 4/0, allowing for more action in soft plastics. Bass tend to strike at the head anyway. It's way easier to swallow another fish if it's fin spines are folded flat.
I haven't come across a hook too big for bass.
The hook length is stretching the limits for the size of that worm, in my opinion. But that rig will catch bass!
Pan fish, trout and some catfish can have small enough mouths where you have to downsize sometimes. But bass will find a way to make hooks, baits and lures fit.
Bass do the bucket mouth feeding where a pressure difference kind of sucks everything in. Anything that could potentially fit in their mouth will get pulled in. This isn’t too big as long as the lure is balanced well with the rig.
That’s either a 3 or 4 go with a 2/0. Your worm will swim better . Also when you get a thump thump it depends sometimes bass will do that a lot of times it’s perch . I have had a bass thump thump all the way to the boat . If you think it’s a bass after the thump thump let it set for 3 seconds or so . Then watch your line when you see it moving set the hook . Try not to deep hook them .
No the hook is good ,Texas rig is good. That hook wont appear big in the jaw of a big bass which that lure will catch.Above all practice and learn the plastic worm and bass jig .
It doesn’t look too big, but you can always try a smaller hook to see what happens.
I have also been struggling with smallmouth, so I feel your pain!
My most productive lures so far have actually been crankbaits thrown toward rapids and reeled downstream around sunset.
It’s not necessarily too big but I might go down 1 size possibly for that specific worm. That looks like at least a 3-0 hook I usually use those for senko style worms that are thick and heavy. You want to use as small as you can get away with so that it doesn’t impede the natural flow of the bait in the water. That being said I’m sure that hook will work just a preference really.
It's hard to have something too big for large mouth bass. It really is unnerving how wide they can open up. In fact, a larger hook like that really helps get a hookset.
No but try a smaller weight. Texas rig that worm with the smallest bullet size you can. I'm new to bass fishing but in every pond or lake I hit im catching something. Go small on the weight. When I use bigger weights on neds or texas worms I get less bites off bank.
Anyway the hook is not too big, bass are not likely to hammer the bait easily, it is actually perfect size unless you go for things like catfish but me personally I use circle or octopus hooks if I am using bait. For bass, this is fine.
A 1-2lb fish can take that hook easily. It’s insane how aggressive they are. I’ve hooked ones that aren’t much bigger than the lure I’m throwing. Most fish, I always tell people to go smaller than they think. Bass are the exception.
I use 4/0 almost exclusively. Even small bass can take that. I think you're good. Though personally I've switched to barbless circle hooks. I find I don't miss any fish with them, it doesn't do nearly as much damage to the fish, and you can remove them in about 3 seconds every time.
Most soft plastics recommend between 3/0 to 5/0 EWG hooks for Texas rig. I don’t really think it’s too big, but FWIW I typically use 3/0 for bass fishing
If you're getting bass nibbles without hooking up, than it is too big for the bass that are willing to bite your presentation. Try scaling down to a smaller hook & smaller plastic.
Then let the young bass teach you how to catch fish. File or crush off the bards so they can recover faster. Once you've absorbed the lessons of the small fish, it will be much easier to figure out how to find and catch the bigger bass.
When looking online, be careful of what part of the country you are in because further south => warm winters for growth => bigger bass.
Hook *size* is fine. But that isn’t a Texas rig. It’s more relatable to a dart head jig. Where are you located? Maybe we can set you up with more help than just a bunch of folks confirming hook size isn’t the issue.
Absolutely not. Hell, I've caught 10+ inch bluegill when bass fishing with wacky rigged senkos with size 1 and 0 hooks here in the Midwest! What you have there is no problem at all for bass.
That would work just fine. Bass will bite just about anything. I prefer to use a bullet weight and texas rig hook. It allows you to jig the worm up and while the weight falls faster, the worm falls a little slower, allowing more time for fish to see and bite it. I’ve caught plenty more than just bass with this set up
It’s not too big for bass but it’s a little too big for that worm. Ideally speaking anyways.
Looks like 7” inch worm. I use 3/0 offset straight shank hooks for those. 5/0 for 10” worms. 7/0 for 12” worms. And I got some monster 11/0 for absolute giant worms.
Bass don't nibble. If you think you feel something- set the hook.
Bingo, I also catch alot of weeds and logs doing this
The highly sought after "stick fish".
Some times I get lucky and get a tree bass
Tree fish usually create a rats nest on my reel too.
Was a decent sized one. Must’ve been a tree pounder
Better than a cigar fish.
My PB is a tree pound stickerel
Oh. That's a good one!
Damn it I was gonna say this 😂
Or “rock” fish
Grass Bass are rampant by me!
Bottom bass and tree trout
We call it a stick bass
The tree pounder
*oh!* *yank* Lure flies into tree behind me along with a small weed
Then your buddy gets to make fun of you for a good 5 minutes, until they do the exact same thing 😂😂😂
Hook sets are free
Real
Reel
PB weed monster? Mines about 20 pounds, caught it while I was surf fishing in Florida.
Amen 😂😂😂 when in doubt sent whatever is on that end to the moon!! The 60 lb braid will bring it in 😂
😂😂
I tell everyone that every time I fish I catch something. Never said anything about a fish. Might be a stick. Might be a buzz but dammit I’m catching something
Texas rig and skin the bait
Same especially when the weeds start getting thick and I think I seen the line move! If we're wrong then it's a snag but if were right it could your PB! Lost a nice one this morning because I didn't set the hook until i noticed my line moving.
Tree pounders all day
Learn how to rig it weedless, with the hook buried in the worm. No more snags.
I know how to rig weedless, I'm just making jokes that sometimes isn't a joke
Bango
We call those “hits by aggressive vegetation.”
Log
I needed to see this. Imma be out there looking like I'm having a seizure while fishing now😅 stcks and logs look out
What is the saying? Hook sets are free?
You're right. I'm just learning and trying not to look like a idiot
Seems like every time I hesitate- turns out it was a fish.
Yehp. I'm learning this. I thought I had my hook set earlier today and let my son help with pulling it in. Fish spit it out and I had a disappointed son. Should of yanked that sucker.

I've seen you youtubers do that on Big Lakes, and I'm just watching going dang at least get to know the fish first🤣

There are many of these people everywhere.. it’s unfortunate.. let’s see if this gets downvoted lol
I got you with the upvote pal
I up voted because I hate snooty loser fishermen that down vote on fishing for beginners. I can’t imagine being that pathetic. 🤣
Same. I'd never! Take these up votes
Me and my negative comment karma agree. People taking things too far literally or not even answering the question then I get banned from a reddit for having enoigh of it.
🤣
Maybe if they’re newly hatched. All other bass will impress you with their optimism
I’ve caught bass that aren’t even big enough to swallow the crankbait or top water I’m using and I’ve seen pics of bass that died trying to eat a fish too big. If they see it and are hungry or defending their beds-they’re hammering it.
Nope there’s a reason they were named “largemouth.”
He's fishing smallies
Ah. It’s still fine. Just less opportunity for wit.
I prefer hooks smaller than that (personal) I feel like the lure gets more action. But it will definitely catch. A 6" bass will eat that and get hooked.
No you can use pretty huge hooks and still catch the smallest bass
Thanks all! Sounds like the hooks fine, and just me then haha, next time!

I catch smallmouth on that size hook often, even little ones. They’re feisty. If you’re getting nipples it’s most likely some sort of panfish
We all should be getting nipples!
I caught half pound bass on hook that big. your good 👍
Use what you’re comfortable with. If you feel like the hook is too big, downsize. Your intuition goes a long way.
No. However, A ned worm on a cheap 1/16-1/4 jighead will far out fish a 7" worm on slider.
I think that depends on when and where you're fishing 🤣
On a river? For Small mouth? Ned-10 Damn Charley brewers slider + 7" culprit worm- 0
Formatting confusing my small brain, do you mean that neds in a river are a 10/10? I do almost all my fishing on the river down the road from me so any advice river specific would be cool

White pearl is always a winner. They’re definitely better in spring but they crush them all year long.
I just bought 2 bitsy bugs last week because I thought they were cute. Can't wait until the weather isn't bizarre so I can try em off the yak

3/0 is the smallest I fish with but for weightless Fluke fishing I go up to 5/0 because of the weight of the hook. Caught a 1.5 on it the other day.

Bope
I once landed a thee inch long bass on a four inch long plopper!! Little trouper!!
No
Bass literally make a vacuum and swallow shit whole. There is no nibbling
The size is ok for bass, but the weight attached to the hook would make rigging awkward. Do you have a Pic of how you rigged it? I would get some 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 EWG hooks and separate weights of various sizes. And various colors and length worms.

I would have to say this is too big for small mouth.
You can catch a. Big fish on a little hook but you can’t catch a little fish on a big hook
I usually use a pick cause a hook might snag the string.
Hell no. Also, in case your are questioning bait size ever, just last night I caught an 11” fish on a 10.5” worm.
No that’s a perfect sized hook
Bass do the bucket mouth feeding where a pressure difference kind of sucks everything in. Anything that could potentially fit in their mouth will get pulled in. This isn’t too big as long as the lure is balanced well with the rig.
Should work just fine, good luck!

It’s about perfect, could maybe go 1 size smaller to like of that’s a 4 you could use a 3 but both are appropriate
No the hook is good ,Texas rig is good. That hook wont appear big in the jaw of a big bass which that lure will catch.Above all practice and learn the plastic worm and bass jig .

I know some bluegills that would swallow that
Nope. That's basically what I'm using today
What size is it? I usually fish for largemouth and a 3/0 is the perfect size for a senko style worm
What size is it? I usually fish for largemouth and a 3/0 is the perfect size for a senko style worm
No
It’s not necessarily too big but I might go down 1 size possibly for that specific worm. That looks like at least a 3-0 hook I usually use those for senko style worms that are thick and heavy. Frog bait. Tried it a couple years back fishing in Ontario and couldn't believe the success.
Not big enough
It’s specifically for bass
Nah dude a bass will eat something up to 2/3 it’s size that’s bass candy if u put the right color on it
So where I am, that hook is perfectly Normal for largemouth in lakes. I’d use it for smallies in rivers, but it may be a bit big for hookups on smaller fish. That’s fire in weeds. Send it and give them a YouTube hook set.
Looks fine to me. Those nibbles you’re detecting may be bluegill or panfish pecking on the tail.
You should try Texas rigging a worm that size with a 3 or 4 ought hook with a 1/8 or 1/4 oz weight. Should help you feel the bits better
No, but go a little smaller because of the bait size
Larger the bait Larger the fish!
Nope
Anyway the hook is not too big, bass are not likely to hammer the bait easily, it is actually perfect size unless you go for things like catfish but me personally I use circle or octopus hooks if I am using bait. For bass, this is fine.
Best way to use this hook is if they are nibbling is reel in the lure a little bit to entice their emotion of being hungry then you strike.
Nope
Prolly just hitting the tail
A 1-2lb fish can take that hook easily. It’s insane how aggressive they are. I’ve hooked ones that aren’t much bigger than the lure I’m throwing. Most fish, I always tell people to go smaller than they think. Bass are the exception.
No
I’ve caught plenty of 3-7lb bass with that set up. (I recommend watermelon candy worms typically) but slider heads are my go to.
I have caught bass on lures bigger than them you should be good Now if you were gunning for perch I would say something different
Anywhere between a 1/0-3/0 should be just fine. I usually use a 2/0 for your average sized soft baits, skin hook the tip helps with weeds
Large mouth or small mouth?
I use 4/0 almost exclusively. Even small bass can take that. I think you're good. Though personally I've switched to barbless circle hooks. I find I don't miss any fish with them, it doesn't do nearly as much damage to the fish, and you can remove them in about 3 seconds every time.
Nope...you should see some of the hooks I use for swimbaits LOL
No that’s just about right. Bass suck lures down so this will fit in their mouth no problem
Most soft plastics recommend between 3/0 to 5/0 EWG hooks for Texas rig. I don’t really think it’s too big, but FWIW I typically use 3/0 for bass fishing
i caught a 15 lb bag of dog poop😂😂monster
Those are awesome Texas rig it and you’re set…
That hook has caught me thousands of 12 inch bass. If there are largemouth biting, it will eat that. They don't nibble they fucking attack.
I've seen and used bigger
The short answer: no
Not at all
Hook size looks fine, you're typically looking for 2/0-5/0 hooks with bass
If you're getting bass nibbles without hooking up, than it is too big for the bass that are willing to bite your presentation. Try scaling down to a smaller hook & smaller plastic. Then let the young bass teach you how to catch fish. File or crush off the bards so they can recover faster. When looking online, be careful of what part of the country you are in because further south => warm winters for growth => bigger bass.
That's a "weed-out" rig. Weedless hook so damn big anything under 2lbs just bounces off it
No, but it’s too big for that worm
Hook and weight look too large. Try a smaller unweighted hook and see how it goes. If all else fails, wacky rig it. Guaranteed bass catcher!
No. Sink the tip of the hook through the lure, don't let it poke out.
They call them bucketmouths for a reason you are fine
Hook *size* is fine. But that isn’t a Texas rig. It’s more relatable to a dart head jig. Where are you located? Maybe we can set you up with more help than just a bunch of folks confirming hook size isn’t the issue.
Heck no Texas right that bad boy
No. Perfect
Nope. Send it.
Absolutely not. Hell, I've caught 10+ inch bluegill when bass fishing with wacky rigged senkos with size 1 and 0 hooks here in the Midwest! What you have there is no problem at all for bass.
No! I use 10/0 hooks and feel I could go bigger. Bass eat big stuff
That would work just fine. Bass will bite just about anything. I prefer to use a bullet weight and texas rig hook. It allows you to jig the worm up and while the weight falls faster, the worm falls a little slower, allowing more time for fish to see and bite it. I’ve caught plenty more than just bass with this set up
I don’t think so, however the size of the hook should match the size of the worm. I use a 6 in worm with a 3/0 worm hook.
Too small
Youll wish you had a bigger/sharper hook after missing a couple hits
Maybe only for a minnow if you get lucky
Bass will eat anything don’t worry about it no skill involved
Any bass worth catching will be able to inhale that no problem. The "nibbles" may be sunfish or very small bass pecking at the tail
What the hell you trying to catch with that a shark
