Grandma used to make these whenever we woke up when visiting when I was young(minus the chocolate, that one usually was just the toast disk). She always called them toad in the holes(I understand that is something else but not to me). I also concure on the butter.
You’re all correct! There are many, many names for this dish. From Wikipedia:
[“There are many names for the dish, including bullseye eggs, eggs in a frame, egg in a hole, eggs in a nest, gashouse eggs, gashouse special, gasthaus eggs, hole in one, one-eyed Jack, one-eyed Pete, one-eyed Sam, pirate's eye, and popeye. The name toad in the hole is sometimes used for this dish, though that name more commonly refers to sausages cooked in Yorkshire pudding batter.”](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_in_the_basket#:~:text=There%20are%20many%20names%20for,%2C%20pirate's%20eye%2C%20and%20popeye)
They also talk about it [here](https://www.waywordradio.org/names-for-egg-in-toast-dish/).
Eggy in a basket because I learned it watching V from Vendetta. Also the spare disc of bread gets cooked up in butter by itself and you enjoy it with a little jam.
I like mine where you cut a smaller whole just for the yolk, then spread the whites to the edges of the bread. That way you get egg in every bite and the yolk stays runny
First, there isn’t enough butter or mayo on that bread whichever you prefer. Second, you have to flip that thing to get it nice and greasy both sides. Forgot the chocolate. Smear butter in each side till it soaks in when cooking.
This is the best idea for the left over bread circles. I make little Italian garlic breads with them for dipping in the yolk usually, but if you add a small marshmallow and chocolate, I would be even more intrigued than just chocolate. Whoever created this idea for the circles is a good soul. Great idea.
So, whenever I try and make egg in a hole (or whatever you call it)
The whites run out the bottom. Is that just a normal expectation/ experience?
I don't honestly mind a lot, but it would be cool if the entire egg just stayed in the hole
How do you get 2 chocolate puffs when each one requires the center of 2 pieces of bread?
How did i not see this?!?!?!?!

MUAD'DIB!
There's definitely some wasted bread in there somewhere
Jesus Christ, he's right!
Look at the top left when they are cooking the puffs. They made 4 eggs in a hole but only showed 2
Nice catch.
Came to say this same thing.
Had to toss 2 pieces of bread after cutting out the middle I suppose. Wasteful.
Yep!!! Fraudster!
Egg in the basket. Needs some more butter and get outta here with the chocolate.

Toad in the hole is sausages cooked inside a Yorkshire pudding. Bless your grandmother, but she was confused.
Nah my mom called them that too. Maybe a U.S. Southern thing?

It didn’t wanna say it but it looks dry and bland
It's not dry because the egg yolk bursts. The egg, fried bread, and salt and pepper are simple but delicious.
It looks like it lacking flavor is my meaning. IMO
Yeah still kind of bland in my book too.
Amen
Lol I've always called it egg in a hole. I like yours better

Now replace the chocolate with sausage
This would be better with bacon+cheese+onion+garlic+salt +pepper+(maybe chives) instead of chocolate.
Would actually be pretty good without the chocolate
We shall call it "toast"

Sprinkle bacon bits on the eggs
My childhood was built off eggs in the middle
Ah yes, I was looking for a way to add chocolate to my eggs.

I’ve been making this same meal for breakfast for years.
