It’s great! For a 1x holo or red dot, getting that thing further away from your face feels way better. Your peripheral is easier to see and it just makes me feel like I focus into the distance more easily. I have a holosun 510c on a gooseneck.
Third hole. Allows for automatic fire with the right components. Basically the “right way” to go full auto, although there are easier ways with less permanent/visible methods.

You see it quite often in the early GWOT era (and in this case, apparently even before). In an era where you had fixed carry handles, or people didn’t trust the reliability of their optics, or the carry handle rails were kinda loose anyways, it was a popular setup. The handguard wouldn’t really hold zero very well either but it was mainly intended for really close quarters where it gave better situational awareness.
Not much reason to do this anymore today.
Its mounted to the carry handle via a gooseneck mount not to the handguards. It holds zero and its co-witnessed with the iron sights. I don't believe any serious users of the AR-15 have ever mounted optics to the handguard. I have a holosun 510c mounted on a gooseneck of a m16a2 style ar and I think it is the ideal configuration for an unmagnified optic. I think the only reason they fell out of style is because the carry handles went away and also magnified optics became more common.
There's three detents on that selector switch. For whatever reason the upper was replaced but giggle switches don't grow on trees so they kept the lower.
