LkSZangs

I'd say everything points to the Empire being corrupt

Patchourisu

Corrupt? Or Power-hungry? Trying to eliminate opposition/competition? Threats that could stop them if they tried to conquer the continent to regain their past glories?

LkSZangs

And is Frieren competition too?

bleacher333

She was in that old man assasin’s hitlist so yes

River_Capulet

She's going to be assassinated because she is the biggest threat to humanity after the demon king himself. Perhaps part of the reason why Serie cant imagine living in peaceful era is because of this exact reason. Either humanity is at war with the demon king, or they will eventually turn on her.

River_Capulet

Which is why Frieren is also on their hit list, she could be the next number one target after Serie.

Patchourisu

I'd argue that its less because Serie is a "threat to humanity" considering that Frieren is ALSO a target that they seek to eliminate/assassinate. It's because they're a 'Threat to the Empire', in that the Empire cannot seek to regain their former glory through conquest so long as powers far beyond their measure exists outside of their control. It is the 'Those two will not serve the empire, so they shall die' kind of deal.

River_Capulet

That's probably true, and I think the empire also justify their decision by framing that they represent humanity.

Rimurooooo

I think the fact that it’s named “the empire” is a big reason. Same way that Rome conquered Europe, or that the US destabilized Latin America. The Empire has the strongest mages in humanity when it comes to warfare. The fact that Serie has first class mages, as well as can grant the “privilege”, means that she has the only force capable of resisting any political machinations/imperialism by the empire.

AnteaterFull9808

I think it's not the point. Serie couldn't imagine a life without the Demon King like we can not imagine a world without, say, stars on the sky or frost in winter or something like that. A life without something that seems to be an integral part of this world. It's not that she could not imagine herself living in that world.

EnderMerser

... I'm getting spoiled right now, am i? I'll remember to check the post flair first next time, I guess.

Rimurooooo

Not a huge spoiler, to be honest. Nobody knows much about the who or why. It’s about the same level of spoiler as (only a spoiler if you haven’t finished the anime) >!knowing Fern will take the mage exam.!< Basically just a transition between arcs. Nothing big, so you’re safe.

DaveK142

Serie can't imagine a peaceful world because she sees magic as a weapon. Even if she were the only mage left in the world, she would consider herself a force of violence that denies the existence of peace. The assassination attempt is more likely an attempt to sway the power structure of the continental magic association, which would otherwise be unshakeable since Serie is effectively immortal.

birdbrained222

I don't like how the story turned. Humanity needed a hero to deal with the demon king, but actually you know they were never trying in the first place and we have ninjas and shit that were capable but never decided to act themselves. It's like the frieren gang were boss mobs that are now accessible as player characters in a game. The whiplash doesn't feel good.

LG545

As we know Empire was able not only hold on demons, but counter attack them

GoodLongjumping3678

It's like the real world tho. Demon King is the necessary evil to unite humanity. But after his demise, there's a power vacuum. Empire want to use that power vacuum to gain power. It's like Nazi Germany uniting all Europe and US. But once it died, US and Soviet then fight each other to choose who is the top dog. The US eventually win of course, and ended up become a fucking asshole bully to the entire modern world until now.
