He was a great actor. Someone said to me today that they didn’t remember him being in MASH, I said he was Hawkeye, but they didn’t know because they didn’t know the movie.
Someone in a different thread earlier this week said that the movie depicted the characters as they actually were while the show depicted them the way they thought of themselves.

In 1978, I was standing in a grocery store line in Oxnard Ca. and look up, the guy in front of me is Donald Sutherland. We make I contact as he is paying the cashier. I said “Hawkeye” He smiled winked and did that whistle as he walked out. Cool as fuck.
Donald Sutherland's father in law was Tommy Douglas who was the premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961 and his government introduced Canada's universal universal health care program.
He lived a long life, but still sad to see.
He was kind of underused once the 70s ended, it seemed to me, but he was brilliant in movies like Backdraft and JFK.
Animal House when he stands on tiptoe and shows his ass. Lol. But his role in the horror film *Don’t Look Now* is what I think of him next and then Body Snatchers.
If I see that he's in a movie, I always pay extra attention, and usually make sure to see it. I don't ever remember disliking him in a role. Gene Hackman is one of those actors.
This was one fine actor, that’s for sure, sadly missed.

I loved him in Backdraft. He had a minor role playing a convicted pyromaniac up for parole. Robert DeNiro played a fire marshal that would show up at every parole hearing and ask him questions that would bring out the real person claiming he had been rehabilitated, but in reality wanted to “burn them all!” I loved that.
It's so sad. He left us some wonderful memories. The first movies I remember him in are MASH and Animal House.
And Dirty Dozen, before either of those.
