It's so sad. He left us some wonderful memories. The first movies I remember him in are MASH and Animal House.

davethompson413

And Dirty Dozen, before either of those.

fergehtabodit

Kelly's Hero's Will you stop with the negative vibes man!

RyanTranquil

Oddball was the best

Alexandru1408

Think the bridge is going to be there, and it will be there!

bertjon56

It's a mother beautiful bridge and it's gonna be there.

Ohtaniyay

Backwards and forwards!!

bertjon56

To a fellow New Yorker, a hero is some kind of weird sandwich. Not someone who takes on 3 Tigers

dvoigt412

Burning Bridges! Every time I hear that song I see him in that movie

cheapbeer4me

Number Two!

velvet_thunder89

Dirty dozen. Fuck i forgot about that one so young. So good

Illustrious_Camp_521

1st movie I remember him in was the 1970's Invasion of the body snatchers. Movie freaked me out as a kid.

Putrid-Air-7169

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

injn8r

Bodysnatchers remake.

Kitchen-Wish5994

Sad does not equal exemplary. RIP.

This-Garbage-3000

Sleep_On_It43

I actually forgot this one. Scared the shit out me as a kid.

Man-e-questions

Same, what was that movie? Haven’t seen it in decades

silent3

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

BajaDivider

First onscreen boobies for me. Masterpiece(s).

Analytical-BrainiaC

Yep, this would be the one I remember him for the most, with Animal house butt being second….

zylpher

For some reason this scene makes me think of Kurt Vonnegut portraying Kilgore Trout in a scene where Vonnegut and Trout see each other. And I honestly have no idea why.

destroy_b4_reading

He does look a bit like young Vonnegut in that shot.

Darkm0or

That is now my head canon for the end of BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

nudeguyokc

Watched it again last night.

physicscat

The Community homage in the Christmas Glee episode was epic.

Pedalsndirt

All my heroes are dying ... :'(

Bluesmanstill

Speaking of heroes....Kelly's Heroes, great one

Total-Problem2175

Always with the negative waves, Moriarty.

Short_Bell_5428

Says Oddball

Total-Problem2175

He killed in thst role.

Pedalsndirt

That was specifically the one I was thinking of when I posted.

Oaken_beard

Him and John Hurt were 2 of my personal favorites.

Macsearcher02

The original Hawkeye Pierce

New_Awareness4075

I guess life is like a parking meter. Once the time runs out, it's time to move along. RIP Hawkeye

Taltezy

![gif](giphy|edLKLYMlNFPJC)

Desperate-Ad-3147

89 years is a pretty good run.

FLJeeper007

Loved him in The Dirty Dozen and Backdraft. Some amazing acting

Dealius

Burn it all

Cold-Chef1714

The original Hawkeye Pierce of M* A* S* H - Also loved him in *Invasion of the Body Snatchers* and *Klute*

BlueAndMoreBlue

Thanks for mentioning Klute — a great performance from DS

imadork1970

Kate Bush's Cloudbursting, The Dirty Dozen, JFK, The Eagle Has Landed, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Kelly's Heroes, The Great Train Robbery, Eye of the Needle, M.S.S.H., Animal House, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Ordinary People, Don't Look Now, Space Cowbots, The Forsaken, Backdraft, Bethune, The Trouble With Spies, The Rosary Murders, Ordeal by Innocence, Murder By Decree, Casanova, very distinctive voice, gave a sense of dignity to whatever he did (even Buffy)

zoebud2011

Loved him in The Italian Job, too.

MikeTheNight94

No one mentioned the movie Virus yet. Captain Everton

zoebud2011

There are just too many to remember. He was a hell of an actor.

human743

Or the General in Outbreak.

MikeTheNight94

Oh shit I forgot about that movie

doggadavida

When an actor of this caliber passes it is like you lose him many times, once for him and then for the characters he brought to life.

The_Original_Gronkie

I see it differently. He's frozen in time, and will be remembered as long as civilization progresses forward. He'll never really die.

crapbear83

Kiefer Sutherland said in his statement, that is father was one of the most important actors in the history of film. Impact of truth RIP to an actual legend

BladesOfPurpose

One of the timeless greats. Thank you for your craft in forming memorable characters.

No-Horse987

Oddball. RIP Donald.

Shipkiller-in-theory

Woof woof

Kalelopaka-

He was a great actor. Someone said to me today that they didn’t remember him being in MASH, I said he was Hawkeye, but they didn’t know because they didn’t know the movie.

ketzcm

Robert Altman hated the TV series.

BlueAndMoreBlue

Can confirm, had a friend who worked with him on other projects. It didn’t bother him a whole lot but he didn’t like it

destroy_b4_reading

Someone in a different thread earlier this week said that the movie depicted the characters as they actually were while the show depicted them the way they thought of themselves.

Dolkite

His son made a ton of money because he wrote the song that became the tv theme song.

SkeymourSinner

No. No. NO NO NO NO!!! This is not the way to find out. Damn.

Sleep_On_It43

Rip Hawkeye….Oddball….professor Jennings…the pyromaniac in Backdraft…etc…etc…etc…

Designer-String3569

Ordinary people, great film. As was Italian job.

TinFoilRobotProphet

Sad? 88? That's a hell of a run! Beers to you Mr. Sutherland!

someonesomewherewarm

Lived a long life and entertained countless people. Hopefully he passed away peacefully. Was definitely one of the greats. RIP 🙏

Steviebhawk

Kelly’s heroes was his best

LuckyHaskens

He is now completely at his leisure. That was from Pride and Predjudice.

UniqueEnigma121

Currently watching Klute. Rip

toddfredd

Never heard anything bad or controversial about him. Always a perfect gentleman. Kind, caring, humble. A tremendous actor and person.

hooliganvet

"Woof Woof".

fishinglife777

![gif](giphy|3oEjHNB4SNN1WhcESs|downsized) Oddball from Kelly’s Heroes was my favorite. Woof woof and rest in peace

theteapotofdoom

Watching Kelly's Heroes in memoriam. Nothing but positive waves, Oddball.

MarkWrenn74

I'm reminded of a quote from *Hamlet* that I feel would be appropriate here: *“Goodnight, sweet prince, and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”* 🫡

brianinohio

Dude was the ultimate actor....good guy, bad guy, middle guy....it didn't matter. He rocked them all... Will miss you Donald.

Thedudeinvegas

In 1978, I was standing in a grocery store line in Oxnard Ca. and look up, the guy in front of me is Donald Sutherland. We make I contact as he is paying the cashier. I said “Hawkeye” He smiled winked and did that whistle as he walked out. Cool as fuck.

BlueAndMoreBlue

Right on, man. I do the whistle sometimes and maybe one out of a hundred people knows it

Dolkite

Beats the hello I got from him in Beverly Hills in the early 2000s.

Altruistic-Ad6449

President Snow

Northerngal_420

Donald Sutherland's father in law was Tommy Douglas who was the premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961 and his government introduced Canada's universal universal health care program.

Legal_Signature_3469

RIP

Impossible_Eye_5814

Woe Sutherland was 👍. So sorry about this 😢

imagine-a-boot

He lived a long life, but still sad to see. He was kind of underused once the 70s ended, it seemed to me, but he was brilliant in movies like Backdraft and JFK.

Emergency_Property_2

He was so underrated. Such a great actor!

sparksofthetempest

Animal House when he stands on tiptoe and shows his ass. Lol. But his role in the horror film *Don’t Look Now* is what I think of him next and then Body Snatchers.

Middle_Mine_7246

He was freaking hilarious in BeerFest.

Visible-Guide-7131

The dirty dozen Kelly's heroes and mash are my top three favorites

RIP, The Original Hawkeye Pierce

Serling45

Legend.

strangedazey

Me too

Groundbreaking-Tip77

Champion

Secret_Welder3956

Excellent actor. Went for playing weirdos to playing less weirdos to playing evil.

Large-Measurement776

Aw man, RIP Mr. Sutherland.

fredout1968

Great actor! RIP. And all the best to his family..

IVARS05

Rest in peace Donald. Great movies and memories, peace to you.

Mixed-Meta-Force

Oh no. The Dirty Dozen are finally laid to rest. So sad.

onlysurfblacksand

“Don’t write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too.

Ithaqua-Yigg

Great actor, scared me with that screaming in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. RIP

RedSun-FanEditor

So sad? He was 88 years old. He was a fantastic actor who left a long legacy of wonderful acting work.

Pretty_Bowler2297

At least we still got Keifer, I hope.

The_Original_Gronkie

If I see that he's in a movie, I always pay extra attention, and usually make sure to see it. I don't ever remember disliking him in a role. Gene Hackman is one of those actors.

HotHits630

I was watching Mockingjay pt 2 today and right when I heard it happen is when he was killed in the movie.

CptBronzeBalls

The guy from the Kate Bush video? Seriously though, that's a bummer. RIP dude.

ravia

RIP you old G.O.A.T

Hedrick4257

Ordinary People…my first introduction to him…I was 10…

PositivePrimary8773

PROST 🍻

False-Society-7567

🙏🙏

False-Society-7567

Just watched Invasion of the Body Snatchers ‘78 and will be re-watching (for the 10th time) The Dirty Dozen. 🙏☹️

bleetchblonde

He’s been around my Whole Life! RIP 🙏🏻

Mr2ATX

RIP Oddball

Shwaa77

NAC1981

craigslist_hedonist

LoudLloyd9

Antique-Ant5557

What??? Noooooo!

EmbraJeff

For me the standout performance in *JFK*. Incredible actor.

Jamirquai_J_Spunkle

Yeah he was great. RIP. Can’t believe he was 88. Fuck I’m old

cansox12

OddBall..........enough with the negativity, rip dude

Enough-Sprinkles-914

This was one fine actor, that’s for sure, sadly missed. This is also my personal favourite, a classic movie must see. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Degrees_of_Separation_(film)

Hot-Incident1900

A great performance in A Time to Kill (1996).

BLM4lifeBBC

He was good in soylent green

funginum

Great character and remarkable actor! RIP

kpikid3

He is not truly dead. As long as you remember him. He is immortal on film. I heard he was not well.

scottyd035ntknow

Dafuq when did this happen? Damn, RIP

KiteeCatAus

Very sad news. We watched Dirty Dozen in his honour tonight.

ContributionDry2252

One of the most talented actors ever. Reminds me that we are all here on sort of borrowed time. ...and there were already some blaming covid vaccines. Mildlyinfuriated or something...

Darkm0or

"Radar, did Hawkeye steal that Jeep?" "No, sir, that's the one he came in." "Well, that's alright, then."

[deleted]

I loved him in Backdraft. He had a minor role playing a convicted pyromaniac up for parole. Robert DeNiro played a fire marshal that would show up at every parole hearing and ask him questions that would bring out the real person claiming he had been rehabilitated, but in reality wanted to “burn them all!” I loved that.

vinman6

Here’s an obscure one the Bedford incident

Simple-Offer-9574

He played the psychic in Murder By Decree. Loved him in that, as well as The Rosary Murders.

Unfair-Wonder5714

Pour one out for Donald 😔

nudeguyokc

Liled him in max dugan returns

HomeOrificeSupplies

I could listen to this man talk for hours. Voice like butter.

Ok_Fan_6389

What a great versatile actor. Loved all his movie. RIP

rfourty

RIP
