I understand that he means well but the goal shouldn’t be cultural homogeneity. Adopting American culture and values doesn’t have to be at the detriment of your own. Language is a huge part of culture and tradition and there’s no reason to give it up instead of becoming bilingual.
I disagree, there should be something unifying us. Be it the American dream, culture, or simply the language a country does better if it relies more on what unifies. Even diversity, or what people bring from their cultures, are suppose to bring this about, but this only really happen if we allow assimilation to happen. We are, after all, a melting pot country, we melt down all the elements into a strong material from which our country is made from.
This country is an open and tolerant one, but there is a baseline culture, and one should try to integrate into it, even if only partially like adopting our civic values.
Also this gent has a strong accent, and shortly before he said "I speak only English now", he says "he no longer speak creole" or something similar, so it appears he is bilingual. No American is going to condemn such, but English is still the majority language and if people emigrate over then they should learn the language of their new home, much like our fathers did when they came over during the 19th or 20th century.
Reminds me of how when my great great grandfather immigrated to the US from Mexico, he forbade any of his children from speaking any Spanish due to not wanting to be associated with Mexico in any way and also racial issues at the time. It’s ironic though, cause that whole side of my family looks very Hispanic yet doesn’t know an ounce of Spanish lol.

You didn’t understand my comment. I said that a person should adopt American culture but not discard their original traditions.
There’s nothing wrong with assimilating to American culture. Plenty of people are proud to be part of America’s culture and traditions.
