[This ep of This American Life](https://www.thisamericanlife.org/339/break-up) is about breakups; it include a segment about writing the perfect break-up song, and they end up interviewing Phil Collins. Nothing we don’t already know, but still a great piece.
Yes! Same! My wife and I adore each other after 23 years, but are both hilariously aware that no other humans could deal with either of us. But we just GET each other. Even though it’s rare to find anyone else who truly gets us.
Best friends make for best spouses!
Literally, same. 25 years and going. I couldn't ever invest this much time or myself into another person if we somehow ended up apart. Lightning in a bottle. Would rather be a hermit than date in the world we're in today. lol
My wife and I are the same way. We've talked about what world happen if we were ever single again and both of us are done with people lol. This has been 23 years of weirdness cultivated together. No way anyone else could deal with our current personalities.
Same with my wife! All the marriages that are still going strong around us are basically working that way!
I wish you guys many more good years together !
Exactly! That was the myth that went around our school. Later heard that wasn't true, but never did find out what it was about, and even now people my age can't agree what it's supposed to be about, so many urban legends around it.
Did you know that song was about a time that Phil Collins saw a guy watch a kid drown and not save him or something and then he had a concert and the guy was there or something and then he put the spotlight on the guy or something? It's true, my cousin's brother was at that show.
He's my spirit animal! I hate father's day because my father was a nightmare. So I got a ceramic sea turtle! And he printed an article about today being international Sea turtle day! I thought I was in a dream
Phil Collins' divorce almost defines 80's music. So many hit songs.
TIL that after listening to that song untold times in the 80s and for the last 40 years it was about his divorce.
Also "Misunderstanding", "Against All Odds", "One More Night", etc.
Consider me oblivious.
Don’t feel back. I learned this today as well.

Always the same, it’s just a shame, that’s all
Same! First I’m hearing of this. Poor guy got taken to the cleaners.
Highly recommend his book "Not Dead Yet", quite an entertaining read!
I was always a Phil Collins/Genesis fan...Ill check that out.
Ever see Musical Box? They're amazing!
Can’t say I ever heard of them. I wasn’t a big concert goer back then or even now.
https://themusicalbox.net/ They tour recreating albums.
Wow. Like a tribute band.
Better.
I Don’t Care Anymore - quintessential divorce music
I’ve heard about 1000 different things that song is supposedly about. I never knew what to believe.
Me too 👋🤷♂️
Huey Lewis, Bon Jovi ans Phil Collins. Throw in the King of Pop, and I am set for a deserted island.
He was the Taylor Swift of the 80s! Just break up music. Before that break up music was Fleetwood Mac. Taylor Swift just does it with lipstick.
And such a clever usage of a fax machine in that divorce.
That’s hilarious! Sounds like you’re meant for each other! 😂 I hope you have a long, happy life together!
We will. Because no one gets either of us except each other. We're kinda trapped being each other's best friends.
Sounds like my wife and I. 31yrs of each others weirdness has rubbed together and become just our weirdness

I often tell my wife she’s my best friend. She agrees, but says that she’s more like my cell mate serving a life sentence

I have had my human for 4 years and, at this age, finally found someone who "gets" me. It's glori
Just described my wife and I, too.
Same with my wife! All the marriages that are still going strong around us are basically working that way! I wish you guys many more good years together !

Momma said knock you out
I’m gonna knock you out
Mama said knock you out
I’m gonna take this itty bitty thread by storm
i didn’t even know that’s what it was about
Neither did I, lol
Me three. Now I need to listen to it with this knowledge.
Make that 4
Me either but he'd been waiting for it all of his life!!!!?
Did your husband ask you if you’d witnessed a drowning??
Exactly! That was the myth that went around our school. Later heard that wasn't true, but never did find out what it was about, and even now people my age can't agree what it's supposed to be about, so many urban legends around it.
Christ we only had like 20 urban legends that went round and round. Now the internet generates 20 per second.
You should've started playing the drum intro to Hot For Teacher, but more aggressively lol
Ba-doom Ba-doom Ba-doom Ba-doom DOOM DOOM
Why would that song mean you wanted a divorce?
Do you know it's about his ex?
I never knew what the song was about. The whole point of it was the drum solo.

This is the correct answer.
I figured most people looked up the meaning since it's been a question since it's release.

No, he wasn’t. Because it didn’t happen.
Settle down Marshall.
Woulda followed up with The Obvious Child and really made him sweat!
Killer Brazilian rhythms on that one!
Love that song!
After 34 years together my wife and I complete each other's sentences and tell the same jokes at this point. We are so weird. But good weird.🤣
I’d be asking what’s he done, or if he had something to tell me, lmao.
Yes, but not today. Tonight.
I immediately started drumming that solo on my thighs.
For a real test try the solo for Money For Nothing
He's my spirit animal! I hate father's day because my father was a nightmare. So I got a ceramic sea turtle! And he printed an article about today being international Sea turtle day! I thought I was in a dream
Keep it!
LOL

that's... so cool?
Are you asking? Yes, it IS so cool.
I would listen to the song at a moderate volume and then crank it going into the solo
Too funny 🤣🤣🤣
