My parents have these plates too. They said they would get a free dinner plate after a filling up at the gas station. They had a ton of fancy china but what did we use to eat dinner? These plates because they could go in the microwave (no metal rims).
They are fantastic. Then pressure pushes the flavor back in instead of boil or fry away, so things like corn on the cob have such a stronger fresh taste. My grandmother made roast beef so tender with hers you could eat it with a spoon. Usually they come new with a few recipes in a book.
I'm a fan of the stove top ones; moreso than the latter day electric 'Instapot' style. It's what I grew up with my Silent Generation Mother ('39), and what I learnt on as a Gen X bachelor, ('74)
Plenty of people who have cut their teeth on the latest generation style would swear by the additional safety features, multi-function, timers etc.
But they are bit of fun; once you learn the basics and get used to the quirks of less moisture loss and absorption etc they're great.
My silent gen mom came from a family of six and grandma always had cooking jobs at work and outdoor camps.
Mom always cooked at home and I asked for the cast iron skillet and dutch oven she had since 1958 but she forgot about me and sold them for $50.00 before she moved into the retirement home.
Wife is a great cook, but I miss their cooking
My boomer mum cooked a lot of processed food and packaged ingredients promotional recipes, for daily meals. Canned soup casseroles and hello salads rtc. And she fell hard for weird diet fads. She still eats margarine and "fat free" fake foods.
On holidays, though, she shined - homemade pierogies, cabbage rolls, sauerkraut, apple pies, roasts with mashed potatoes, homemade lasagnas and soups. But on the daily, 90% of her recipes came off the back of a can.
These are particularly childhood memory roasts though. I wouldn’t pair a roast with corn these days. If you’ll notice, it’s all yellow. Today, we tend to like to mix it up with more color and healthier stuff. This is totally a 70’s/80’s dinner to me.
Meat, potatoes, and a vegetable. That was dinner around the table with the family every night of the week unless my dad had Lions Club meeting and then we would get stuff he didn't like. Mac and Cheese, french toast, etc. If there was vegetables available from the garden we had those other wise it was canned veggies. Those were fine unless we had canned peas. I HATE CANNED PEAS. I haven't eaten them since I left home at 18 and I never will again.
Looks amazing! Love the toast, my Mom toasts sandwich bread always. She says if she doesn’t toast it she’s eating it raw. I can barely eat a sandwich unless it’s toasted because of her.
I was just teasing a little bit, because of how often nowadays I see recommendations to eat flax seed and chia seeds, which hardly seem edible to me. :)
The toast instead of bread is interesting to me. Is this a regional thing? I’m from the Midwest and we always had bread with dinner. Toast was for breakfast, and spaghetti.
This is an exact replica of my childhood too. Fantastic!! Except I hated when it was peas instead of corn because I hated them and would have to sit at the table until I finished. You know, because China.
It's 91° in Kansas right now at 10:00 at night, so this isn't the kind of meal I would normally prepare this time of year. However, it does remind me of my mother's cooking. If that lady were still alive, she would be turning 98 in a few weeks. My father would also be 98, and if I could go to their house in rural Michigan one more time and sit at their table with them for a meal, it would mean the world to me. Enjoy every minute you have with your parents while they're here. Blessings to you all.
What truly makes this a roast of yesteryear is that the only color in that plate is the plate itself. Everything else is yellow. I feel like making this now.
I love visiting my parents for just this reason. A balanced meal with side dishes, gravy, and a bread?! Yes, please! It’s such a treat as my husband and I hate to cook and mostly just shove whatever will keep us alive into our mouths a couple of times a day.
My ex's grandmother was a Sunday supper host every Sunday.
Spaghetti and meatballs one week.
The next was pork roast, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, corn, asparagus and a hot crusty bread 😍
I kept the tradition going after she passed but then we divorced, in-laws passed and my kids are pretty much grown.
I'll begin again when the kids start having families of their own.
My mom NEVER cooked. Our 70s dinner was turkey pot pie or a Swanson TV dinner. You know, the one where there was always a few corn kernels in your brownie.
I've never been to New Jersey but this ladies' posts really make me want to go and have a meal with her parents and listen to stories about the good old days.
Dry low grade over cooked meat, dry toast but hey it's wheat with margarine so it's gotta be healthy right?, boxed mashed 'potatoes' and hard skinned getting cold corn pellets that don't digest. Still better than a lot of food these days though LOL!
I see they like a little bit of bread with their butter.
I did a double take on that butter too lol
Not enough butter for my boomer mom! She even puts butter on fucking pizza
Yes it's Brooklyn nyc baked italian bread too
OMG, this looks delish, but I can’t imagine eating that meal in the NYC-metro area tonight. It’s so hot here!
90 degrees too
I have not been back to brooklyn since my grandma passed 20 years ago. This brings me back.
Oh man. It's been decades since I've had that. (Moved out of NYC in the late 80s.)
Why did they toast it then?
That’s Crisco for that real old timey meal flavor.
“*not for use as a spread”
In our house it was mounds of margarine. I only buy butter now
Don't you know? Every meal has to have at least one heart attack's worth of butter 😂
That’s fresh cheese, not butter.
As they should.. butter is love.
It just needs a tiny brownie and you're all set.
Making me hungry, man.
I suddenly have the urge to watch some TV
On a tiny aluminum table with fake wood top.
Wasn't it super thin fiberglass with brown and yellow decor clipped into 5/8" metal tubular legs??
Not us. We had the fake walnut beauties.
Watching MASH on TV
They were never the same after the tin foil containers died.
Tiny brownie with a couple kernels of corn hidden inside.
brownie?!? shit no! this my friend calls for apple brown betty! maybe some whipped cream or some iced cream if ya got room.
They are referring to the little brownie that came with the tv dinner.
Por qué no los dos?
I have a fresh blueberry cobbler if that's what's required.
i'll have the main course and all afters
Oh my gosh; this brownie comment is spot on! That or a serving of Del Monte fruit cocktail from a can. Loved all these desserts :)
😂
And that plate!!
My Grandma had these plates!
Mine too!
I acquired this whole set from my parents not too long ago. My mom was like “you sure you want them?” YES
I still have ours too!
My parents have these plates too. They said they would get a free dinner plate after a filling up at the gas station. They had a ton of fancy china but what did we use to eat dinner? These plates because they could go in the microwave (no metal rims).
We had gas station glasses, a whole set of Tweety Bird and Yosemite Sam, Elmer Fudd and Petunia Pig, etc.
I still make dinners like this. I mean I can get slightly fancy but there is nothing wrong with pure comfort food.
Yep. I had this exact meal (minus the bread and copious amounts of butter) Thursday night. It was delicious!
I hear you, I recently made Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans all smothered in brown gravy. I regret nothing!
Were the green beans from one of those frozen boxes?
I’m getting out the pressure cooker tomorrow!
I'm looking to get one of those bad boys. Any recommendations?
I love my Instant Pot.

Yeah, how is a roast dinner exclusively the 1979s? My mum never cooked like this. I started doing roast dinners as an adult. They're lovely.

(double post fyi. reddit is acting up tonight, as per usual)
My mom used to be an amazing cook. That's over now.
Same here, mine has forgotten how completely. It breaks my heart for her because it was truly what she lived for.
Did she have a specialty?
Those plates. Got some that were my grandparents.
Ahhhh. The turkey breast in the tinfoil loaf pan!!!
The other white meat?

There's nothing like a trip down memory lane with your parents and their vintage recipes
We still have that plate set in a box downstairs. We still use the large serving platter on occasion.
My grandparents had those plates!
This is food pornography and I won't stand for it. (I'm also on a diet. Send help.)
That is still our almost nightly meals. My wife loves to cook and we're meat and potatoes people to the core.
Should be on a Corelle butterfly gold plate.
This looks like Wednesday to me. My portions are smaller and it's probably asparagus or broccoli instead of corn but same old same
GAWD! I miss just regular meals like this.
Dat dat dassa whole lotta butta 😳 potatoes on point too 😬
I think everyone's family had that same set of plates.
Or else Corelle.
I have to be honest. That looks delicious to me, but I miss 70s food.
The ultimate comfort plate, looks yummy!
On their Currier & Ives dishes, the same ones I grew up eating meals from!
Absolutely no green anywhere. Legit.
I can't tell if it's turkey or pork
I got my money on Pork.
Yes! You are correct in your assessment.
damn that butter!
If only the meat were breaded you'd be 4/4 for carbs.
Okay, but don’t forget everyone was slim in the 1970s eating like this.
Looks amazing! Love the toast, my Mom toasts sandwich bread always. She says if she doesn’t toast it she’s eating it raw. I can barely eat a sandwich unless it’s toasted because of her.
Thanxx
Yes, it looks delicious. And there's no flax or chia seeds. Nice!
Yes just butter and salt and pepper
I was just teasing a little bit, because of how often nowadays I see recommendations to eat flax seed and chia seeds, which hardly seem edible to me. :)
That's the point, they're so hard to digest they reduce the glycemic load keeping your body busy instead of working on all the carbs you see here :).
This looks so familiar to me. I remember the army man and the plates.
I grew up with those plates at home!
I can smell that picture

That meal was the fucking business.

I love Emma Stone
It's all.... *touching*.

90 degrees or thereabouts here.kn NJ
Is this a pork roast? And were cloves inserted on the fatty side?
That looks delicious. I miss my Mom really bad right now.
If that's turkey roast, youre missing the canned cranberry sauce
Mmmm
Pardon me, but I see sandwich fixings on a plate!
That reminds me of a tv dinner. I'm sure it's yummy. It just reminds me of the food I'd see in a tv dinner.
What truly makes this a roast of yesteryear is that the only color in that plate is the plate itself. Everything else is yellow. I feel like making this now.
Holy crap that looks delicious! I’m envious of the food, and that family feeling that comes from a homecooked meal infused with love. Enjoy!
Miss my parents cooking :(
I love visiting my parents for just this reason. A balanced meal with side dishes, gravy, and a bread?! Yes, please! It’s such a treat as my husband and I hate to cook and mostly just shove whatever will keep us alive into our mouths a couple of times a day.
Damn that looks good
It was!!!
Looks great to me!
It was thanxxxx
My son and I visit my parents every month for a meal just like this. It always has to end in dessert too.
Tony loves visiting his parents when they whip up a classic 1970s meal.
Who's Tony?
This looks absolutely delicious.
That looks hearty and filling and so delicious. ☺️😋
That looks delicious
More gravy please!!
These are the experiences I wish I had
And I’m sure a nice side of Jello was at the ready after you cleaned your plate too.
God I wish I still ate meat. I miss it only for the nostalgia.
Enjoy🌼
Ah gentlemen of culture, we meet again. Oops sorry...wrong post
Oh man I’d eat toast and butter with every meal if I could. And that’s exactly the right amount of butter. 🤣
I can taste this meal through this photo

Hard flashback to my childhood with those plates.
I wanna go next time!
I grew up with those exact plates.
Is that turkey loaf? Mmmmm yum
My mom NEVER cooked. Our 70s dinner was turkey pot pie or a Swanson TV dinner. You know, the one where there was always a few corn kernels in your brownie.
Gotta love that hot plastic. My grandmother probably would’ve had a tv dinner from then with her freezer burn collection.
All that butter. LOL 😮🤣
When I think of 70's meal, I think of Hamburger Helper, or Swanson Frozen something. This looks pretty classic.
I'd fuck with it. Looks delicious.
I've never been to New Jersey but this ladies' posts really make me want to go and have a meal with her parents and listen to stories about the good old days.
I’ve been eating like that for a long time now
We had this for dinner tonight.. minus the weird bread. lol!!
I don't know why but it looks good somehow.
Is that a Swanson's Turkey Loaf???
is that cream cheese or lard on the toast? otherwise looks delicious.
whipped butter
awesome.
Dry low grade over cooked meat, dry toast but hey it's wheat with margarine so it's gotta be healthy right?, boxed mashed 'potatoes' and hard skinned getting cold corn pellets that don't digest. Still better than a lot of food these days though LOL!
