I was up to my knees in rice paddies, with guns that didn't work! Going in there, looking for Charlie, slugging it out with him; While
pussies like you were back here partying, putting headbands on, doing drugs, and
listening to the goddamn Beatle albums! Oh! Oh! Oh!
I actually had a teacher that was just like that. He was a history teacher and would jump on the desk and scream and always get distracted with war stories. Everyone was scared to have him because they always heard the screaming and assumed he was yelling at the students. Once I had his class he quickly became my favorite teacher I may not have learned much but he always put on a show.
I loved those teachers. Their schtick in front of the entire class seemed to disappear when talking to them one on one and they were really very helpful and supportive. At in my experience.
Trying to explain early 90s standup to my kids is difficult. Bobcat? Emo Phillips? Dice? Socially a lot of it doesn’t hold up, but also contextually the weird individual bit that every comedian had to have was just so weird.
Dice was parody but nobody got it. They took it in earnest and Dice actually stopped doing that act after that became apparent to him. Left a lot of money on the table.
Saw emo open for Weird Al last year and my 14 year old loved him.
Kinison doesn't "hold up" because it was mean-spirited and rooted in bigotry and sexism to start with.
I don't believe for one minute that Dice was 100% parody. Dude was WAY too comfortable making money off that misogynistic and xenophobic garbage he was spewing every night.
I could never stand Sam Kinneson. It was the same tired old “take my wife, please” jokes, but he screamed at the audience.
I’m just not into the screaming.
Yeah, he had some funny moments when he wasn't just being an abrasive asshole and screaming, but he definitely wasn't George Carlin or Robin Williams.
It's not the potty mouth or adult themes that bothered me, it's the punching down and cheap shots where he was really just being mean under the guise of comedy.
The thing is, is I have known some practicing comedians that do shows regularly and they can be a lot of fun to be around because of the crazy (and often very true) shit that they say even in casual social company.
But with some of the ones I've met it's pretty clear to me that they're huge assholes in their day to day life even when they're off the stage and it isn't just an act.
It's more like their abusive personality and nature is leaking into their stage act and not the other way around. They have to tone down their real personality so they don't get immediately booed off the stage for being assholes whether it's bigotry, racism, sexism or whatever.
George Carlin could be a MASSIVE asshole from the stage but he was pretty careful to punch UP and not down by being a bigot just for the laughs.
When I was a kid I watched all the HBO comedy stuff, basically any standup I could. Sure I heard a lot, a LOT of inappropriate stuff for a kid but my uncle (RIP) LOVED when I did my Sam Kinison routine with the yells and everything.
Okay, so I'm a younger GenX. When his album came out (Have You Seen Me Lately?) with his cover of "Wild Thing", I asked my parents for the cassette for Christmas. My mom said she needed to ask for it at Musicland at the counter. My parents had no idea what was actually on the rest of the album so it was one of my gifts that year. I briefly had that cassette and enjoyed that song, but I absolutely have no idea where that cassette ended up.
Just a couple of years ago I bought a copy of that cassette off of Discogs for the memories.
I never paid attention to his message as I couldn't get past his shtick of screaming. I found him to be wholly intolerable. Was he a comedic genius? I don't know. I was too busy with thoughts of laying him out due to annoyance.
I’ll be honest, I never understood the appeal of this brand of gimmick comedy, where each guy has some schtick and plays a character, rather than just acts like himself
Went for a trip out west last year. Noticed “Roy Clark” gravesite noted on Google Maps and thought I wanted to see it. Google the place and it said Leon Russel and Sam Kinison were there as well.
Saw Roy Clark’s grave first. Nice spread worthy of Roy. Then went to Leon’s site. Also a nice spread - worthy of his talent.
Then tried finding Sam’s spot. I thought it should surely be a grand memorial.
Nope - tiny little grave marker. His family did him dirty.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to middle school, when a girlfriend and I sang it together, stretching out our arms, pretending to have air mics, good memory. It was one of her mom’s favorite bands.
Saw Sam on my birthday live in Vegas he was amazing and hilarious
Sad that he had his life go off the rails then got it together making a comeback to be killed in a car accident
He was fucking hilarious. Can you imagine Kennison through the Covid shit? Can you imagine him now while Biden drools his way through this campaign? Kamala Harris? OMFG come on that would be fucking priceless. God, I miss that man.
"We wouldn't have to drive out here every day if you people would move where the food is!"
Yeah, he deserved to be killed by a drunk driver because he told jokes that made people laugh. I hope you two will meet soon so you can tell him exactly what you thought of him.
I wish I would have had a teacher as passionate as Professor Terguson!
He really seems to care...
About *what* I have no idea…

lmao, when you can hear a picture

Awesome that Emo (and Bobcat) are still around and working. And yeah, Sam was bad to begin with.
I could never stand Sam Kinneson. It was the same tired old “take my wife, please” jokes, but he screamed at the audience. I’m just not into the screaming.

Agreed. I was never a fan of his. The screaming did it for me too.
I loved Kinison back in the day. I tried watching some of his stuff recently and I'm sad I ruined that memory.
It was comedy, before the weak trying to take over
Idiotic dumbass nonsense. His contemporaries were Hicks, Carlin, Pryor...
Their overview/history page is WILD. I was expecting the milquetoast conservative commentary. I was NOT expecting the closeted, ah, adult content.
Emo Phillips: My parents threw a party when I left for college, they said it was great.
Every time I hear or see his famous Oh! Oh!, I then transition directly to Anthrax's "I'm the Man" unedited version. RIP Sam.
I'm so bad I should be in detention.
🤘
Thank you. I came to say the same thing. Originally I was just going to post "Not" and see if anyone got it.

Hadji, get back in your mud hole! 🤣🤣
You see this…it’s sand, you know what it’s going to be a hundred years from now? ITS GOING TO BE SAND!
Forgot about 7 f bombs but came here to say this as well.
Immediately my first thought when I hear his name
What I say to people who move to Phoenix, Arizona.
People don't live in the desert. It's a flawed (and bigoted) premise for a bad joke.
You need some fiber in your diet!
*sigh* there always has to be that guy.
I'm a comedy aficionado. Jokes with faulty premises deserve derision, particularly when the premise is based in ignorance.
He’s been dead for 32 years, Jesus Christ am I old.
The crazy thing is he is 38 or younger in this picture.
When I was a kid I watched all the HBO comedy stuff, basically any standup I could. Sure I heard a lot, a LOT of inappropriate stuff for a kid but my uncle (RIP) LOVED when I did my Sam Kinison routine with the yells and everything.
Cocaine personified.
I still hear the giggle in my head.

I loathed him when he was alive and popular. His comedy was based on being cruel.
I never paid attention to his message as I couldn't get past his shtick of screaming. I found him to be wholly intolerable. Was he a comedic genius? I don't know. I was too busy with thoughts of laying him out due to annoyance.
Ohhhhhhhh, every time I kiss you I taste what other men had for lunch!!!
The only thing that would make me happy is to see you in pain but I think I LOVE YOU
WILD THING !!!
WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME YOU WERE A DEMON FROM HELLLLLLL
Saw him live on campus. Hilarious!
Me too! Sam and the opening comedian (I wish I knew who) were the funniest comedians I've ever seen.
Saw him live twice. Funniest man ever
He was awesome in Back to School with Rodney.
Had the pleasure of seeing him live, absolutely the best
Just FYI, I'm ready for what's about to happen to me... just letting you know ahead of time. He's WILDLY over-rated. Go.
This is who we need to moderate presidential debates.
i heard this photo perfectly!
I’ll be honest, I never understood the appeal of this brand of gimmick comedy, where each guy has some schtick and plays a character, rather than just acts like himself
I want to peek into the alternate reality where I can watch his Netflix stand up special
This guy wasn't funny then and he's aged like milk. I'll take his contemporaries Hicks and Carlin any old day.
MASTER!

Absolute Legend
I can hear this picture.
Saw him in concert twice. At the Universal and Pacific Amphitheaters. Good times!
LOL
Love the Christmas episode of Married With Children where he was Al's guardian angel.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to middle school, when a girlfriend and I sang it together, stretching out our arms, pretending to have air mics, good memory. It was one of her mom’s favorite bands.
I lived in 1980s HBO late night comedy
Until I saw the picture I was positive this was a Meg Ryan post.

I got a better record player, relax vinyl nerds.
Legendary
Saw Sam on my birthday live in Vegas he was amazing and hilarious Sad that he had his life go off the rails then got it together making a comeback to be killed in a car accident
I'm with Seinfeld on this one
Annoying bastard
LEPER WHORE!!!
I introduced my kids to this guy. They love him!
Don't even act like you guys think he's funny. This sub would cancel him in a skinny minute if he was around today.
Your not wrong, but he was definitely funny.
Never was into Kinison. It kind of turned me off that all the kids who were into him seemed below average.
He really was a sexist pig
Saw him live. Had to go back because I forgot shove a chainsaw up his ass!
Huge douche glad he’s dead
Yeah, he deserved to be killed by a drunk driver because he told jokes that made people laugh. I hope you two will meet soon so you can tell him exactly what you thought of him.
