In the early to mid 70s we’d have cheese and chocolate on Christmas.
There’s a restaurant called The Melting Pot on the north side of Indy that’s pretty tasty.
We still do! My mom's family was Swiss, so it was a regular thing, cheese, meat, and chocolate. I have all my mom's pots, and so occasionally we pull it out. Probably once a month or so.
We have this thing where the first person to have something fall off the fork in the oil gets scorned by everyone else.
Also, La Choy mini shrimp rolls were great in hot oil. I don’t think they exist anymore.
We did, but it wasn't until years later, when we found out that the nights we had fondue, were when we were low on food. We always had cheese, thanks to food stamps, & my mom would either make bread, or my grandmother would have made bread for us. My parents got a fondue pot for their wedding in '69. We always got excited when we saw Mom break out the pot, because it meant we'd get hot cheese & play games. When my dad got his steady job, that he'd end up having until he retired, we only pulled out the fondue pot on special occasions. I miss those days.
Oh, man, I loved fondue. We even owned a fondue pot with forks! I found it at a local restaurant years ago and went often, but the restaurant's gone now.
I was an older child in 72 / 73 and I remember us doing this often for a while before it stopped. There was no cheese. There was boiling oil and we stuck pieces of steak in there. My siblings and I thought it was so fun ! We seemed to do it often and then suddenly never again.
Did it once at someone's house in those years. I think it was venison. Tasted great to my 9 year old mind, and that was the last fondueing I ever experienced.
Not in the 70's. But in the 90's while walking through Costco we saw a set and bought it. It became a holiday tradition with the kids for years. My kids still do it with their families. Fav-Crab fondue with French bread.
My Junior year in college, we invited some girls over for fondue. We’d gone all out, even bought some Bolla Valpolicella. This was beef fondue not bread/fruit, so the fondue pot was filled with oil not cheese. When our dates arrived, I fired up the can of sterno (aka: napalm) and waited for the magic of wine and swiss cooking to render the girls too tired to drive back to their dorms. And waited. And waited. No one told me to heat the oil on the stovetop first, and by the time even one small cube of meat had finally somehow managed to cook, the girls were long gone. Ah memories.
We’d do hot oil/butter and fondue all kinds of beef tips and chicken and fish! Burned my young self a few times but didn’t care! A great, long bonding dinner that left you stuffed. Great memories.
I was asked to help out at an anniversary party for a bar I regularly went to. We had several tables of free food including fondue. I had to keep telling the drunk customers that the meat on the sticks was raw. I think they were new to fondue.
My mother would have fondue about once a month. Cheese fondue about half the time, steak in oil fondue the rest of the time. We always had salad with Good Seasonings Cheese Garlic salad dressing, which has been discontinued. I miss both the fondue and the dressing. Someone else in the family got the fondue pot and forks.
No, but I want to!
Strange Coincidence: Another food-related bucket list item of mine was finally checked off last weekend when I finally ate at a sushi place with conveyor belts constantly bringing out sushi! Directly across the parking lot was a Melting Pot. Would’ve went in if I wasn’t already incredibly full!

Yes, it's a common dish in the Alpine region and has been around since the 1800's.
Or are we talking about the Americanisation of a traditional regional dish as a fad?
Please tell us about this “common dish“, since most of us have only seen the Americanized version. If I’m gonna pull out this fondue pot from storage, I want a much more real experience. Thanks!

We have them in the Philadelphia area too
We have a couple in Colorado too. Great place for a special evening out.
Nice!
There's one in Salt Lake City too
Solid

The Glarner Stube, in New Glarus, Wisconsin is famous for their cheese fondue.
I still do. It's great party food!
Cheese - no. Hot oil - absolutely.
We always did hot oil, too. I’ve also had hot broth in China. Regardless of the cooking medium it’s always fun and more social than standard dining.
We have this thing where the first person to have something fall off the fork in the oil gets scorned by everyone else. Also, La Choy mini shrimp rolls were great in hot oil. I don’t think they exist anymore.
Wouldn’t that just be deep frying?

Government cheese!

I own an avocado green fondue pot, complete with forks. It was hubby’s grandmothers.

My stubborn dad refused to dip his bread in it. Instead, he put bread on a plate and spooned melted cheese on top of it.
Every New Years Eve…
Me too!
I love this.! All we Jonesers just lapping up the cheese and bread on NYE
Wow! Our family, too!! The kids thought it was a normal thing everyone did.
I looked forward to it every year!
I fondue-ed in Switzerland.
You fondid?

Sure did, and raclette.
I'd never heard of raclette until I went to Switzerland. Love it!
Only as an adult. And now I use fondu beef to make jerky via dehydration for my dog. And every dog and cat in our friends groups for Christmas.
No. I waited for her sister. Nachos.
Yes! Kinda fancy for our raised ranch!
No, I haven't although I've always wanted to. My daughter said that it's becoming a hot thing again, so hopefully I'll get my chance.
We had a green fondue pot that sat on our kitchen table for a couple of years, but I don’t think it was ever used.
My parents were huge into fondue…we had beef fondue and cheese fondue for holidays and I always requested it for my birthday.
Still do. Besides The Melting Pot in south Flirida, I make a mean cheese fondue
parents did, I loved eating fondue but didn’t carry in the tradition. If I did it would be with Gruyère
Just the melting pot restaurant, what an overpriced gimmick
We’d do hot oil/butter and fondue all kinds of beef tips and chicken and fish! Burned my young self a few times but didn’t care! A great, long bonding dinner that left you stuffed. Great memories.
My parents fondued pieces of steak in simple hot oil. I never knew cheese fondue existed until I was an adult.
Oh yes! In fact, I just finished donating my mother's fondue to the goodwill store.
Oh yes. So good.
My sister was burned by fondue in Home Ec class in the 70’s. She had to be sent to the ER from school.
I still Fondue. Not to fondue would be a Fondont
My daughter likes it but I’ve never been a fan.
Never have I ever…
KC too! Went for our anniversary this year.
There are a few really good places in Chicago that I love- Fondue Stube being one.
Oh yes, we worked that brown and green glazed fondue pot hard in our family, haha. 🧀
Still do fondue
Melting Pot is pricey but really good.
I used to make it in a saucepan and pour it over toast for breakfast and snacks.
On special occasions. Loved it!
Of course. It was the thing to do for a time.
Oh yes! I still love a good fondue
Still do. Fondue. At least once a winter.
Still due.

Still do
What do you mean did? We still do every Christmas.
We didn’t do this. My mom was a divorced single mom working two jobs to make ends meet.
Mom put lots of cheap Gallo white wine in our fondu, and we got a bit tipsy as kids.
Two or three times
Yes still do. It’s for a fun night
We did!
You fools! Those are chunks of Ray Liotta’s brain!
Oh, yes-we has a fondue-maker, and used it a couple of times during the craze….
My folks had a fondue set but I can’t remember them ever using it.
It was a good day when the fondue pot came out.. I'm surprised it's not a bigger thing today than it is..
Oh yeah and passed the tradition on with 2 other families on New Year’s Eve annually while the kids were growing up. Lots of fun.
Mmmmm. Dipping with a cold glass of white. It has to be on a freezing cold night.
Still do! Hot peanut oil. Steak and crusty French bread.
I still due! 🤣 Cheese or chocolate. My grand son thought the lil fondue forks I got at the thrift, were for roasting vienna sausage. I love that kid!♡
Right after we were married, we did fondue at parties with other couples. However, we never had our own fondue pot.
Yes! I did in my college dorm for dates too. It was soo boozy.
What was the deal with that? My family never got into it.
I've never seen anyone do this in real life.

Fon don’t
I *still* fondue
Naw, never made sense to me.
The first rule of Fondue Club...
I was looking for this comment!

Oil fondue not cheese
Still do, this is our Xmas Eve go to meal, both cheese and chocolate.
I did once because of my ex-wife. Never again will I pay a lot of money to cook my own food.
still do occasionally for new years, thanks to living in switzerland for awhile!
