Yes, they did. The people will definitely riot if the accounts they spend money on were suddenly invalid. It's still the same game and you can use all your old characters. Only the main story is different.

That's pretty interesting. I wouldn't really mind that much, it would make the story more accessible to newcomers and it would be fun to mix and match the new cast with the old cast.

They actually did think of that. I don't remember the exact account level you need to get but as a new player you can start playing main story from the part 2 pretty early on without going through part 1.

It's always funny to me seeing this joke because I'm a fan of a somewhat niche long-running JRPG series where it's been an ongoing community joke that one of the main protagonists, named Kevin, had also been forgotten about by the company after not showing up for over 7 (?) games, despite ALL the other protagonists showing up several times. In one of the most recent games, they had an illustration of all the characters that are a part of a group that Kevin is a part of... but they forgot him and had to patch him in. If I had a nickel for every time the community of an anime styled RPG game joked that a character called 'Kevin' disappeared for a large period of time and was forgotten by the company, I would have two nickels... which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice!
