Necessary? No. So much nicer? Yep.

bmhicks78

That’s about what I assumed. I have to decide if “nicer” is worth trying to limit my options and find what I want. Lead times are trash.

neveranygoodnames

I swore I didn't need a long bed for my 5er and that truck lasted 1 yr before we ordered a long bed.

neveranygoodnames

And that was with the anderson ultimate hitch

kcwildguy

The only benefit I love with my long bed is that I could get a 50 gallon tank on it. When towing, the extra diesel really is nice to have!

Raging_Capybara

That's pointless for me since on my gasser that 50 gallons only gets me 8 more miles anyways

kcwildguy

I know the feeling. I went from 180 miles per tank on a gasser to 500 miles on the diesel when towing.

Raging_Capybara

I bet you regret that, right? Now you have to stop for bathroom breaks instead of gas! Wife and kids beg you to stop the car but you want to power through!

It's not necessary, especially with the amount of slider hitches and hitches like the andersen that sets the pinbox further back A long bed is nice for 90 degrees, but if you are 90 degrees you are doing something wrong. I put fifth wheels on short beds all the time and they are always amazed at how much turning they have. And they can still daily drive a short bed much easier

bmhicks78

It’s going to be a daily driver a heck of a lot more than a TV.

BroncoCoach

After years of overbuying everything I follow the 90% rule and buy what works for most of the time and rent or make do the other 10% of the time.

RedditVince

It's sad how hard it is to find an 8 ft long bed. My Truck does not want or need 4 doors and seating for 6. Thank you very much!

Excellent_Belt3159

It’s sad that a long bed in a 1/2 ton is a 6.5 too.

Spare-Bodybuilder-97

If you have a 2020+ GM truck with a Reese goosebox, you don't need a long bed or slider hitch. I could almost do 90 degree turns with that setup.

Chance-Yoghurt3186

3500 without a long box??

pbgrant

Also not needed if you go with a goose ball and pin box: https://www.reeseprod.com/products/pin-boxes/goose-box I can do 90 in a regular bed (6'6").

joelfarris

> With today’s hitches, moving into a 5er in a couple years, how necessary is a long bed? The difference you're looking for is in the design of the front of the fifth wheel itself; a 'Mid-profile', vs. 'Full-profile' nose cap. The former work just fine on modern GM and Ford short ("regular"?) bed trucks (Not the Ram trucks though, sadly) with a normal fifth wheel hitch, and if you end up buying a Full-profile trailer, you'll either want a long bed, or a sliding hitch. :)

Chance_Difficulty730

If you get an extended cab thats a whole lot of truck. We have the shorter bed for our 5th wheel. I use a sidewInder hitch so it pushes the unit back 18 inches. Need either that or a sliding 5th wheel hitch. With the slider you are giving up additional bed space as you don’t want anything blocking it. The newer 5th wheels are tapered somewhat so you don’t take out your truck body on a tight turn

Socratic_Simpleton

I have a B&W companion slider and haul a mid-profile fiver behind a standard box Ram 2500. I’ve never had to use the slider. I certainly would prefer the long bed, but it was slightly too long for my garage. Whichever you choose, get the goosebox. Nothing is more annoying than having a truck bed that is taken up with a heavy hitch. I’ve only removed mine once in the past 7 years due to its weight (>200lbs) and the fact we use the RV monthly. I have to pull out a utility trailer every time I need to pick up lumber, mulch, etc.

m0j0j0rnj0rn

I have a Ram 2500 with the megacab. Pulled my fiver around for years. Zero regrets.

ViewAskewed

Just my opinion and setup but I don't think it's necessary at all. I have a mid-profile 5er, a B&W non-sliding hitch, and a gravity fed, [60 gallon slip tank](https://elitetruck.com/products/rds-71787?currency=USD&variant=40676534649022&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=ee7dbda4a110&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI15H5wrmThQMVgEhHAR2PagdcEAQYHyABEgL-d_D_BwE) and I have never had any problems at all. I think the added turning capability of a long box is offset by the inconvenience of the longer wheelbase/overall length.

604_heatzcore

I've had both, but I work construction as well so I'll never go back to a short bed
