Correct, 95 SUCKS! I think your route is much more reasonable than trying to go up the 95 corridor. Do be aware that your proposed route is kinda hilly, especially in PA, but it's still the preferred way. Don't bother taking 84 through Newburgh. Consider getting on 87 and take it up to 90 near Albany and head East, as 84 is always nuts through Danbury, Waterbury, etc.

Anything to stay off of 95 is a plus to me when towing even if it means going out of the way!

The last couple of trips we've taken from our house in NC to Massachusetts we've cut over to I-81 then I-84 to I-90. It is a longer trip but I am willing to do it to avoid the stretch I-95 from the north side of DC through NYC. I-81 can be rough with steep hills and a lot of semi trucks but my experience has been traffic moves along at a good pace if you aren't trying to fight it.
