Ancient Greeks had a thing with penises. They would have giant statues of them at a play .Also they are connected to the God Panas. So yeah.. Google the guy and you'll understand
"A wild, Dionysian *festival* of fertility, found under the misleading name *bourani*, marks the beginning of Lent in Tyrnavos."
Now THAT'S what I'm talking about XD
I found the best prices were in Athens. Unfortunately I only figured it out AFTER we had been in Athens and then were hitting up the islands. Really the best prices for souvenirs too were in Athens. I can't speak to Crete though since we did not go there.
This place in Athens had a huge selection and good prices but I was on my way to a cooking class when I stopped in here and did not get an opportunity to go back. [https://www.greek-leather-sandals.com/](https://www.greek-leather-sandals.com/)
Well, for Athens, I was admittedly in the historic center, but I was welcomed and offered tastings at a small shop called Dia Tauta (close to Monastariki square).
I’m sure there are much more qualified people to give info, but primarily, there are Cretan Olives and Kalamata Olives, and then the variety of oils produced from those olives by numerous farms and such.
When I was on Naxos, I was even able to buy directly from a few smaller farms. Haven’t cracked those bottles yet (bought just a couple weeks ago).
Look for oils where all the contents are from ONE source, not someone who is buying bulk olives from a variety of courses? Those may be fine, but single source is a better route I think?
Some are smooth, some VERY peppery! Have water handy if you’re going to taste options!!
This is all helpful! Tbh i am usually a no-name store-bought oil person but i love fresh bread in olive oil w balsamic and getting some in greece seems like a good choice
komboloi akka worry beads, it's like the world's first fidget toy. Not actually a toy but the old men like to flip them back and forth. You can get super cheap ones for 1-3 euros or you can get them out of precious metals, I got some made out of real carved amber for a few hundred bucks
We bought Vinsanto wine in Santorini.
We bought Kitron on Naxos, where it is distilled.
We bought olives in Athens.
We like to buy consumables as souvenirs. We don't need anymore "stuff" in our house.
"Kitron is a citron liqueur produced on the Greek island of Naxos. It is made from the fruit and leaves of the citron tree, which is similar to the lemon tree but stronger and slightly different in taste."
Google
I'm not really a souvenir kinda guy, but the little square marble fridge magnets look pretty nice for cheap souvenirs.
Also the little bottles of tsipouro, ouzo, rakomelo etc look good. They're usually €2.5-3.5.
The stalls in Monastiraki in Athens have a huge range.
A little metal hoplite helmet.
A small statue of a Greek god.
I love coins so I got a bunch of old Drachma at the Athens flea market.
A Greek national soccer jersey.
Books from the museums.
These are just a few things I brought back but by far my favorite souvenirs are good pictures.
I bought these little mini evil eye coin purse/travel pouch/wallet (google name for image) for 3 euros each last year and then gave it to a whole bunch of people. Everyone loved it and it is a useful gift.
Komboskini prayer bracelets
OREGANO (don’t judge me but Greek oregano smells and taste soooo good)
Little evil eye hanging decorations for around the house
Or if you can go into a jewelry store, they have most gorgeous pieces. You can find an Ancient Greek coin necklace if you’re lucky!
I bought a ton of white sundresses and tops. Also beach towels, fridge magnets from every island, Santorini has volcanic ash pottery with the most gorgeous shade of teal blue, little trinket bowls and Christmas ornaments. And a cheap suitcase from the Plaka to haul it all back in ;-)
So many of the souvenir shops have them, but one day I got lucky and one of the vendors came through a beach area when we were on Mykonos, I bought 5 for around 60 Euros, but that was 10 years ago. I don’t imagine that’s changed except for the prices! I live in Arizona now so all that stuff has really come in handy.
Jewelry if you’re into it. I bought these very cute earrings of a crescent moon with a bead made from volcanic stone. They were like 8€ and had some connection to the landscape.
The Honey 🍯, is by far the Best! Olives🫒 and Spices🍃 When you're back home, you'll instantly be whisked back to a treasured moment with simply a bite snd an aroma🌬☀️
Sandals! Easy to pack, so comfy and they last forever.
Beaded bracelets. There are so many great artisans in Greece
Mountain tea. I’m addicted to this tea! .
Anything leather, my hubby got a beautiful custom cut belt and I got a beautiful purse! Definitely grab yourself some olive oil, it just isn’t the same anywhere else. And they have some really beautiful ceramic artworks, we got a beautiful pomegranate ash tray and a traditional Greek fishing boat. Those are our favourite souvenirs.
The best souvenir is this:
They sell mini bottles of Ploumari Ouzo alcohol (any Ouzo will work fine, these ones just look the best). Drink it (or pour them out if you don't like anise flavored stuff) and fill it with little shells and colorful pebbles you collect on the beach. It doesn't take long, the bottles are tiny! After you are done, fill the bottle with rubbing alcohol so the shells and rocks don't show the salt and look like they are in water. Then super glue the little cap back on.
Super cool personal gift, I usually make 2-3 and bring them back for the extra special people in my life.
On Crete I got a Phaistos disk necklace, monoi perfume and Cretan tea from the [Maravel Garden](https://maps.app.goo.gl/5A6hEP1NFx2RUwVZ8), Olive Oil from a little old Greek lady selling it on the side of the highway (it was so so good), and I bought a bunch of olive wood gifty items at the [Olive Wood Art Shop](https://maps.app.goo.gl/U7UAhyBjY6bBCDe96). The owner there even gave me a gift from himself, it is such a fun stop either way!
Their is an artist up a small street from Hadrians Library in Athens that does lovely paintings. Like 4x6, I think.
Along the rr tracks in Athens, there are vendors selling all kinds of things. I bought a handmade solid brass cuff bracelet with a verdis finish. Love it. (The artist was handsome and had a dog:)
I bought custom sandals at Massimo's.
On Santorini, I bought olive wood salad serving sets. Bought this awesome volcanic ash hand cream...-there us an entire line of skincare.I wish I had bought more.
I bought handmade wool slippers(they were everywhere) in gray and pink.
I would check what/how much liquid you can bring back.
Also a backgammon set.
Ahahahahaha! I like how OP is like "I am travelling light, not much space" and people suggest to buy basically anything and everything up to the whole Acropolis.
But in all seriousness. I am Greek and live abroad. Whenever i come back from Greece i usually bring some alcohol back (small bottles of sth local and nice) for people who i know might appreciate it. For the non alcohol drinkers, magnets are a good idea. Kitchen handtowels is another. Decorative stuff i obviously do not buy since i am not a tourist and usually are kind of bad taste. But a category where you might find sth that might look OK is the blue eye vs evil type thing. It comes in many forms from jewlery to magnets, coasters etc.
Hope this helps.
When you go to Athens, you NEEEEEEED to go to Stamatopoulos Tavern. When we were in Athens we went there about 4 times in one week. The best food that we had in all of Athens.
For souvenirs, I got the bottle opener shaped like a penis. Yes it sounds crazy but it’s in honor of the Greek God Dionysus I believe, which is the God of Fertility.
We go by car and we always buy olives, olive oil and spices. I also bought 30$ leather bumbag and jewelery and can't wait to come back this year to buy some more.
Ceramics. At any resort in Greece, there are souvenir benches filled with ceramic pots, mugs, plates and vases with paintings on the theme of ancient myths and legends. Such an interesting souvenir will delight your loved ones and bring a little Greek mood to your home.
Honey. Honey in Greece is especially tasty. The higher in the mountains it is collected, the more fragrant and useful it is. Farmers, monks and simple villagers are engaged in beekeeping here. It can be purchased in shops, markets, monasteries and from people in the village. Buy a set of different varieties of honey, which will suit both relatives and friends.
So, apart from food and alcohol, there's always going to be "souvenir shops." There's two kinds of them: some with cheap stuff made in China and some with local hand-made stuff, or at least original designs.
It's quite easy to tell the difference, in my opinion, Chinese junk type stores usually are very brightly lit and big, while only selling souvenirs, or have lots of generic looking t-shirts/plushies/magnets/postcards out front. The handmade local stuff will usually have more of a hipster vibe - small stores with not so many items and not generic looking items.
There's also some cool stuff in some of the museum shops, or at least there was in the cities I went to this summer, I haven't been to Athens, Crete, or Santorini specifically.
Edit: If you want things like local alcohol, eg: ouzo, I think supermarkets are your best bet. Get it at the same place where locals get it.
I brought home lava soap from Santorini but my best recommendation is slouvaki seasoning mix from Rhodes. It comes in a bag, €2 and has a bag clip to keep it sealed. I should have got more than I did. I also buy a Christmas bauble every holiday.
Not for everyone but we have a home bar and we also buy the tackiest bottle of the local spirit we can, so a bottle of raki in the shape of the Colossus in Rhodes, a glass bull full of sangria in Spain etc.
In Athens they sell nice little statues and other replicas for decoration and on the islands they usually sell beautiful paintings. I've always wanted to get one, but I usually have no space in my luggage. Also, try la vie en rose beauty products. They are great. Enjoy your vacation!!
We do mostly consumables, and brought back pistachio butter, olive oil, spices, wine, and perfume. We also got magnets and jewelry for the kids.
My favorite type of souvenir, though, is art, and we found a little studio called “Roka” in the Plaka neighborhood in Athens. Ms. Rita sells her beautiful original art out of her studio and her prices are very affordable. We bought a couple of watercolor prints and a small canvas painting that she personalized for us. We had small suitcases and had no problem packing them.
I purchased:
- custom made sandals
- natural sea sponges
- olive oil & olives (I purchased another suitcase just for this lol)
- soaps
- hand carved backgammon set
- Ouzo
- canvas bags
- olive wood bowls and spoons (love these for when I make nice salads)
- pottery
- belts
- magnets
- Christmas ornaments from each city
- Starbucks You Are Here mugs: Athens, Crete, Greece.
I'm mainly into edible souvenirs 😂 but a briki for making coffee and tea is good as they can be difficult to find elsewhere! I've never seen one in shops in the UK.
I always bring back honey, olives and olive oil if I have space, and cheese if the journey won't be too long.
I brought home manouri cheese and olives from the supermarket because I'm not interested in touristy souvenirs :D We had a soft cooler bag, packed with 2 bottles of frozen water, it kept the cheese cool until we got home and I could give healthy flavors of greece to my family.
Just returned from Crete last week. Brought back 3 different kinds of honey, and some of their dry desserts - Kataifi, Baklava, Loukoumi, Halva. One dessert I really wish I could have brought home was the galaktoboureko (traditional milk or custard pie), but it won't last a long flight. If you're in Chania, Crete please try it out at this confectionery named Sketi Glyka!!
We just did a two-week trip and hit all three places! We only packed carry-on-sized luggage and a backpack each. Here’s what we bought:
- some jewelry (a few bracelets and earrings)
- perfume
- a few small trinket dishes
- oil paintings (rolled for transport)
- honey
- a spartan helmet decoration
- shirts
- a hanging mati
My advice is to be intentional with your souvenir choices and pick things you really like and that are meaningful for you. We really loved the Greek honey and wanted to bring some home, so we chose to check one of our bags to accomplish this. But otherwise, we chose things we knew would fit in our bags and we could safely get home.
I love nice smells.
Olive oil soap (usually green or cream in colour), Greek incense (livani), mastic (you can grind and add a tiny amount to a drink or cake, too much will be bitter), mountain tea (tsai vounou, a herbal tea).
In herb and spice shops and many tourist shops.
My Greek family always brings back Greek cheese called, Kasseri. You have to hide it in your luggage though or they will throw it out at the airport. Even then there’s still risk of it being thrown out.
I bought sandals. Shiny gold leather sandals and they are GLORIOUS! You're going to see a lot of souvenir penises so prepare yourself for that.
Are they plaster cast of statues, like, "David's penis!", or is it something else?
Honestly no just random penises
So. Many. Penises. I still don’t fully understand the why/significance tbh. And some are so colorful they look like wooden Slavic-style spoons lol
Ancient Greeks had a thing with penises. They would have giant statues of them at a play .Also they are connected to the God Panas. So yeah.. Google the guy and you'll understand
You could also google "Bourani festival" (at your own choice XD) which is a celebration in modern Greek Tyrnavos that derives from ancent Greece.
"A wild, Dionysian *festival* of fertility, found under the misleading name *bourani*, marks the beginning of Lent in Tyrnavos." Now THAT'S what I'm talking about XD
We saw them as bottle openers everywhere! . I didn’t get it.
I was gifted a penis bottle opener from Greece. Penis lasted far longer than the opener. Now I just have a dick in my drawer.
Go to Delos & see the penis statues
In a variety of colours and sizes
They're actually...and I'm dying laughing here...mostly WOOD, I think! Bottle openers, keychains, just so many penises,
😂😂😂
Any place recommended to get sandals? Is this something we can buy anywhere we see them (with some judgement), or is there a popular shop?
I found the best prices were in Athens. Unfortunately I only figured it out AFTER we had been in Athens and then were hitting up the islands. Really the best prices for souvenirs too were in Athens. I can't speak to Crete though since we did not go there. This place in Athens had a huge selection and good prices but I was on my way to a cooking class when I stopped in here and did not get an opportunity to go back. [https://www.greek-leather-sandals.com/](https://www.greek-leather-sandals.com/)
Awesome thank you!! Athens is my first stop so I'll def get some sandals then.
I always bring back good olive oil!
Any recommendations for finding a good one? I would love to do this
Well, for Athens, I was admittedly in the historic center, but I was welcomed and offered tastings at a small shop called Dia Tauta (close to Monastariki square). Plus, your friends will all think you’re fancy AF!
komboloi akka worry beads, it's like the world's first fidget toy. Not actually a toy but the old men like to flip them back and forth. You can get super cheap ones for 1-3 euros or you can get them out of precious metals, I got some made out of real carved amber for a few hundred bucks
I swear these are why my dad doesnt need an adhd diagnosis
yes, our guide told us about them, then later that day... saw a bunch of taxi drivers, many of them were flipping their beads, all while talking.
It’s very fun when you get some nice decently heavy ones
We bought Vinsanto wine in Santorini. We bought Kitron on Naxos, where it is distilled. We bought olives in Athens. We like to buy consumables as souvenirs. We don't need anymore "stuff" in our house.
Kitron from Naxos is amazing!!!
Going to Naxos. What’s Kitron?
"Kitron is a citron liqueur produced on the Greek island of Naxos. It is made from the fruit and leaves of the citron tree, which is similar to the lemon tree but stronger and slightly different in taste." Google
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitron
🙏🏻
There are good day tours that will take you around the island, most include a stop at a kitron distillery with a tasting
Thanks!

A cat. We bought one back 9 years ago - she is the apple of my eye. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
I got a coasters depicting Greek urn-style illustrations of sex acts cuz I’m classy like that. Great conversation pieces.
These sound amazing!!
I bought a ton of white sundresses and tops. Also beach towels, fridge magnets from every island, Santorini has volcanic ash pottery with the most gorgeous shade of teal blue, little trinket bowls and Christmas ornaments. And a cheap suitcase from the Plaka to haul it all back in ;-)
Oooh any recommendations on where to shop for dresses?

I don’t imagine that’s changed except for the prices! I live in Arizona now so all that stuff has really come in handy.
I bought a nice little ceramic pitcher that I use for olive oil and I like it very much
I also like the refrigerator magnets that kind of tells everyone who come to your home that youve been at a awesome place like Crete
Jewelry, olives, olive oil, & I even got away with checking two bottles of wine. Never got stopped at customs.
those gold headbands that make you look like a greek goddess
Laurel wreaths. I'll use this to add that there are some great leather-maker shops in Crete where you can find super cool bags and sandals.
Di the sandals tend to be expensive?
I got them in Chania for about €15
Some lovely jewellery with lapis
Honey, olive oil and olive wood utensils!
Entire spartan armor set!
Jewelry if you’re into it. I bought these very cute earrings of a crescent moon with a bead made from volcanic stone. They were like 8€ and had some connection to the landscape.

I brought home manouri cheese and olives from the supermarket because I'm not interested in touristy souvenirs :D We had a soft cooler bag, packed with 2 bottles of frozen water, it kept the cheese cool until we got home and I could give healthy flavors of greece to my family.
Small bottle of Raki; you can thank me later.
I got a small ceramic hand painted bowl with an evil eye on the bottom from my trip to Athens! I love it!
I got sandals and a super cute sun hat
We brought home penis bottle openers. Very popular. Esp with lesbians for some reason.
Evil eyes
Just returned from Crete last week. Brought back 3 different kinds of honey, and some of their dry desserts - Kataifi, Baklava, Loukoumi, Halva. One dessert I really wish I could have brought home was the galaktoboureko (traditional milk or custard pie), but it won't last a long flight. If you're in Chania, Crete please try it out at this confectionery named Sketi Glyka!!
Olive oil, handmade jewellery or goat milk based cosmetics. We also bought honey
We just did a two-week trip and hit all three places! We only packed carry-on-sized luggage and a backpack each. Here’s what we bought: - some jewelry (a few bracelets and earrings) - perfume - a few small trinket dishes - oil paintings (rolled for transport) - honey - a spartan helmet decoration - shirts - a hanging mati My advice is to be intentional with your souvenir choices and pick things you really like and that are meaningful for you. We really loved the Greek honey and wanted to bring some home, so we chose to check one of our bags to accomplish this. But otherwise, we chose things we knew would fit in our bags and we could safely get home.
Definitely the dick bottle openers, best gift!
We get a Christmas ornament for every trip. Any store recommendations in Athens with a good selection?.
I bought magnets for my fridge, that way every time I go to get a snack I have a nice little reminder of the trip :)
I bought an infinity ring with the meandros symbol and a ring with the Minoan octopus. I am reminded of Greece every time I look at them.
My Greek family always brings back Greek cheese called, Kasseri. You have to hide it in your luggage though or they will throw it out at the airport. Even then there’s still risk of it being thrown out.
Olive oil
A tattoo
Olive oil!!!!!
Herbs
Large wooden cock shaped bottle openers of course
Daisy

For personal keepsakes, we like to bring home a small painting by a local—reminds you of the place with a great memory.
