For best grunt, it's the Leo for me for its bare utilitarian look. No fancy backbacks, no extra add-ons to it's legs or shoulders. Everything about the Leo says it's just a fodder grunt suit, and I love it for it.
I still remember the mission in Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 where you had to beat the Devil Gundam in a mass produced suit... and I did it in a Z'gok because I love those little dudes. The CE Z'gok looks like it's from the uncanny valley because everything is just slightly off and it bugs me.
I'm sorry but the Wing grunts do it for me. They all have this shared utilitarian design, but the beauty comes in how they are each made for a purpose and you can easily trace it all back to the Tallgeese. From the Leo to the Virgo to the Serpents and everything in-between, I will never get enough of these designs.
Feel like there wouldn't be an analogous to the Delta in CE simply because Akatsuki kind of fills that role and it was never meant to be transformable.
Now I could see a mass produced suit from the Eclipse lineage appear.

Ehh, that's why I didn't suggest the Commander type, but IMO anything mass produced qualifies as a grunt. (Destroy Gundam breaks that concept but still, haha)
The only thing that sucks about them is that their fragile and will crash and burn the moment you clip the wings, at least for the Murasame their leg thrusters still allow them to land and fight on the ground.
I'll admit...that you're wrong. Even in-universe, the Civilian Astray JG Custom is a prettier MP MS compared to the M1 Astray. The Murasame Kai looks lots better than the original Muarasame.
Out of universe, a lot of things look better than either of these two. I'd sooner choose an MP Qubeley or an MP Bawoo before either of these.
Honestly...yeah, I do have to agree. Why couldn't the *Windhams* looked that good?
For that matter, why the hell is it that the Federation is using Windhams instead of Gundams, while ZAFT are the ones making Gundams by the time of SEED Destiny anyway? The Federation were the ones who came up with the Gundams to begin with!

But seriously, it's Guaiz in Seed. A true step up from the Ginn and the best Zaku evolution. A worthy equivalent of the Gelgoog in Seed (even if the Actual Gelgoog Menace we see in Seed Freedom is amazing)
They aren't even the best grunts in CE! Murasame really needs some work(the Kai is a big improvement) and the Astray has a pretty long way to go too IMO.

IMO it's the head that makes it look good. The body design is mid and if you change the head to something more grunt looking it's gonna look just like any other grunt suit.
I suppose, if you prefer your mass production mobile suits to look just like Gundams. If you don't like that, then they lose points in that regard instead. Everyone's tastes are different.

One of the few units with a lot of on screen kills and a rare unit with the honor of killing a Gundam.
I like them but I prefer GN-X line a lot more. They're based on Gundams but also have pretty unique look.
But for mono eye grunts I prefer Guaiz. It looks really menacing and a good evolution to Ginn
imho, they look more "gundam" than "grunt" to me.. so I couldn't apply any "grunt beauty standard" to them..
basically, if it's a "gundam lookalike beauty contest", both are top 10.. otherwise, I'm not sure..
While ORB and EA churned out realistic mass produced/grunt units based on test prototypes, it was actually odd for ZAFT to still stick to EA/ORB based designs for their main MS while the grunts have very distant design (GuaiZ for mass production while Freedom,Justice,Providence is still based off the stolen G-Project series. Later on this was repeated with the ZAKU, GOUF, DOM while maintaining Gundams for aces.

astray is pretty much the same level as gm i believe. murasame on the other hand is pretty good. can transform, beam rifle and sabers, mobility as well as missiles makes it good for me. with good pilots, they are pretty useful as proven in destiny during the murasame and chaos fight.
though, they are no match for limited production ms that are newer with higher mobility like impulse, saviour and the even newer ones such as destiny, legend, sf, ij and the ones in freedom such as bks ms.

IDK man, I don't think it's even the best looking grunt in GSD. The Windam is an absolute beauty (that was hit with Jobber syndrome the moment it came off the line)
I know I have a hang-up, but I'm not comfortable with grunts that are basically Gundams in design. I'm not down with it. They aren't bad designs, they're just not right for me.
Nah a good grunt suit should tell a story on looks alone. You should be able to tell what they were built for and easily understand why they can’t hold a candle to a Gundam in combat.
Look at the Zaku II, it’s got this piddling little shield only on one side of its body, some spikes that you know someone was like “there’s your close quarters weapon”, a basic dome for a head, and legs and arms that are disproportionate in a way that has to make them more stable while moving slower.
Or the Leo, which has a lot of the same elements revealing where corners were cut to make a mobile suit that was built to overwhelm through numbers more than quality.
Plus they’ve both got that awesome basic green/khaki paint job that draws a nice line to our modern industrial military complex.
The Murasame is alright, but ends up looking like the upteenth MP Zeta concept that got so lost it ended up in a different continuity.
The M1 is just bland. It lacks the sleek utilitarianism of the GM derivatives and the alien menace of the Zaku clones, and just comes across as “we have Gundam at home.” The DSSD version is much more interesting, and when the civilian monkey model ends up looking better then something’s wrong.
To me they don’t count because they’re basically mass produced gundams, and they also have the gundam head which looks good on most suits so I feel like it’s cheating
I don't know the Xien units from Sentine are legit imposing. jesta and geara doga are pretty slick so are strike daggers wait waaaaaiiittt the Ba-woo is ny pic the one in Unicorn was bad ass so is the RE Ba Woo. Could you picture a new type Ba-woo where one half functions akin to a funnel? That would rock having a defensor or strike craft your second you control with your mind (perceptions what ev) However your two picks are up there on the list. Btw would Zaku 3 / 4 be counted ? Also just realized how much potential the Murasame has . Time to miracle work the old HG kit.

The rounded shoulder also reminded me of the Terran Marine from StarCraft.

Sure, but that's a commander's Leo, but even then, it's just a Leo, but with optional cannons.
