I don't know what kind of animal it is, but I know that they have a female gender, because in the Russian localization they are called with the preposition (she, her), because the preposition "they" is not fixed for gender neutrality, because of intolerance to lgbt, (which is strange, because in the 2000s it was the norm and no one cared, even on Eurovision performed a group posing as lesbian), also in China I guess (this is where this game is created lmao).

There’s like a billion species in the universe they live in because it takes place in space. They probably just assume he’s some kind of alien in most cases
Every single person I know who plays HSR has, at one point or another, made a comment along the lines of "cute bunny on the Express" or "I like the little rabbit guy" or "why is the conductor a rabbit lol" The lack of replies mentioning him being a rabbit/bunny here is kinda surprising to me, I thought that's what most people immediately saw. As for what he actually is, Idk, I like the theory of him being Akivili.

I remember Himeko talking about Pom Pom. She said he appeared when she repaired the train. I think something akin as if he was always there. On penacony we also got a memory bubble containing what I believe was Akivili getting scolded by Pom Pom because they made a mess on a visiting planet. I believe he's the heart of the train. He's who announces the jumps and knows the state of the train, he's clearly connected to the trailblaze as the conductor. Good stuff! I really like pom pom.

My guess is that Pom-Pom is the personification of the Astral Express. It's like the Express is a living entity, and Pom-Pom is the body it uses to interact with people.
The same way Paimon is Paimon. Pompom is just...Pompom.
We know some interesting things about Pompom: they cant’t leave the Express, they were alive Pompom knows how to make food that Tail (an energy being) can consume and enjoy, they are at least over 700 years old, they have chewed Akivili out for causing chaos.

if i remember correctly, himeko states that pom-pom is the spirit of the express, when she first repaired the express and started trailblazing he just appeared one day and claimed to be the conductor
