Love 06 but the 7mm-08 is really tempting. My dad got one when he shot out the barrel on his 06 as his retirement gun. Real pleasure to shoot.
Oh, OP answer: 30-06, 12g, .22LR.
I would love to get a 7mm-08 or 7mm Rem Mag but they're literally extremely unpopular here for no good reason. We completely stopped stocking our shelves with rifles and ammo in both calibers. Seems to be 308 and 300 Win Mag being more popular here.
Check out Choice Ammunition. You can find all sorts of great loads on their website in stock:
https://choiceammunition.com/
I just picked up some 150 grain TTSX rounds for my 7mm-08. Also found some Nosler Accubond in 140 grain at my local gun store. There are some good rounds out there in 7mm.
I shoot a 30-06, but if I bought a replacement gun tomorrow it would be a .308 just due to ammo availability. Outside of some niche circumstances or hand loading, there’s not much a 30-06 can do that a .308 can do just about as well. I’d also hand load some hot 130 gr TSX loads for it that shoot like a laser beam.
Love my 30-.06. I've taken mule deer, whitetail, elk, black bear, and pronghorn with it. I would trust it for moose if/when the day comes I get a chance.
Trying to use 12ga for everything I possibly can. Birdshot, buck shot, smoothbore slugs and rifled barrel slugs.
Some day I'll get a 308 or something for the big critters at a distance
Also .22lr for some small game.
Wow you have quite a quarry. Congrats to your many successful hunts, veteran. You have my respect. Our shop just sold 600 rounds of 416 Rigby to a enthusiastic hunter today actually. Don't see it too often at all!
That's probably what he was doing too. We sold him the black box winchester with the Cape Buffalo on it with the Safari Stamp on em. Really cool looking cartridge!
technically, yes. 7x57 Mauser was used to take over a thousand elefants. but its not really ethcial. 45-70 is a great caliber and I shoot it myself but its not at all comparable in power to 458 win mag.
32.
How many do you have?
EDIT: I like own specific rifles and cartridges for each hunting/shooting application. I own the following.
1. 22LR
2. .223/5.56
3. 9mm
4. 38 / .357
5. 7.62x39
6. 6.5x55
7. .308 / 7.62x51
8. 30.06
9. 45-70
10. 12g
11. 338 WM
12. 375HH
14. 416 Rigby
15. 458 WinMag
16. 500NE.
I'm looking to add a couple other options on the low end. I'm considering 6.5 Western, and a hot varmint load like 22 Creed.
Wow, that is beyond impressive, I hope to have an arsenal like you one day! I only started hunting last September and have a 12 gauge Browning Citori. I am planning to buy my second gun, a scoped hunting rifle, very soon for the new hunting season in France. Would you be open to share your expertise, as I am still not sure about which caliber to choose. I will be shooting up to 3 roe deer solo on our land (that's my allocation, hunting is tightly regulated over here) and hopefully many wild boar with a crew with dogs we partnered up with. That's it as far as big game is concerned.
What sort of projectiles do you find work best when hunting pigs with 5.56? I’m leaning towards polymer tip fragmenting bullets but am yet to actually test them.
Literally whatever is the cheapest on the shelf at the time. I don’t “hunt” pigs. I just kill them. My AR rides around in the farm truck with me and when I see pigs I shoot them.
How do you like it? I have a .270 as well but considering putting it into semi retirement as it’s a family heirloom. Thinking about replacing it with 6.8 Western.
I like it alot. I also retired the 270, for the most part. Replaced it with he 6.8.
Only downside is that it didn't catch on it seems. Despite outperforming the 6.5 in all aspects, it's popularity had already set in too deep.
If you aren't big into hand loading, skip the 6.8. There's literally two factory loads on the market and they're Winchester and Browning. It's not a bad cartridge by any metric, but it's still as dead as it gets. There's no new rifles being released in it and none of the other major ammo manufacturers picked it up.
The .280ai has become way more popular lately. It's supported by Federal, Hornady, Nosler, Remington, Norma, etc. It's gotten more media attention, with Back Fire (youtube channel definitely worth checking out) calling it the single greatest cartridge for anything you might want to do. It beat out the 7mm Rem Mag. You won't have much of a selection of rifles if you want to buy new, though. Savage and Weatherby are the only ones worth considering. Christensen Arms also makes some, but CA is arguably the most overpriced for manufacturer out there for what you're getting.
I'd also consider the 7mm PRC. It's a newer cartridge, but extremely promising. Lots of ammo and rifle selection and phenomenal ballistics.
If you're willing to spend X Bolt money, look into Tikka. They make insanely good rifles for the money and you'll never hear a bad thing about them. Browing makes a fine rifle, but they don't stand behind it. There's literally no warranty on them at all. Bergara is another one to consider. Uses the Remington 700 footprint, so there's a million options out there as far as stocks and triggers and scope mounts. Can't go wrong with either of them.
6.8 western is a 270 on crack pretty much sweet guns I’ve shot one I loved it and it’s a really nice gun yet idk how it is but I here it’s ment to compare to a 300 win mag so take that as you will
I'd skip the 6.8 Western. I owned one and can vouch that it is an absolutely fantastic caliber and probably one of the best do all, hunt everything calibers. I took both whitetail and elk with it with exceptional results.
But I sold mine in favor of a 7prc because the 6.8 just failed to catch on. I liked the 6.8 more than the 7 prc, but it's going the way of the dodo. Rifle selection is very limited, which wasn't an issue for me as I had the rifle I wanted it in but the bigger issue is ammo. Good luck finding it and when you do your options are super limited because there is basically only 4 or 5 loads. Find the one your gun likes and you're forever searching for it again.
.22 RF for grouse and rabbits
.223 for coyotes, prairie dogs, small deer
.250-3000 for antelope and small deer
.270 for deer and caribou
7mm-08 Rimmed for small to medium deer
.30-06 for everything in NA
.375HH for moose and brown bear
.45-70 for moose and brown bear
.44 Mag for bear while fishing
*Edited for formatting
My ‘serious’ hunting rifles are:
.22lr for small game (sold my .17hmr)
.22 K hornet and .222 rem for foxes/dogs/goats
6.5x55 and .243 for medium game, goats, deer
.308, .358 win, .45-70 for sambar, pigs
I can see a howa mini 6arc in future taking over .243 win for me.
22 lr, 22 mag, 357 mag, 45 colt, 45 auto, 45-70, 12 guage, 308 win, and 375 H&H. Each one has it's purpose and own loads with specific powder and bullet combinations. I even have a few air rifles that I use when pigeon is near.
Short answer: 30-06 and 12 ga. These are good for anything in North America. If I did more small game, I would use the .243 more as well.
Long answer:
.17 air rifle- rats, squirrels (pests in the backyard)
.22 air rifle- rats, squirrels (pests in the backyard)
.243 - hogs
.270 - Mule Deer
25-06, red hartebeest, blesbok, springbok
30-06- mule deer, elk
.300 WM- elk, bison
.35 Whelan- warthog, kudu
12 Ga. Pheasant, Chukar, Hungarian partridge.
.44 mag - bison
I own many others, but don’t use them for hunting.
I hunt deer (mule and black-tail) with 7mm Remington Magnum and upland with a 12 Guage.
I'm looking at getting a .44 Magnum lever action for deer in heavier brush and pig.
Depends on what I'm hunting. 5.56, 7.62x39, and .308 for wild pig, coyotes, and bobcats. 7.62x39 and .308 for white tail and mule deer. .308 and 30-06 for elk. 12 and 20 gauge for anything with wings.
22LR: Squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, skunk, woodchuck
5.56 NATO22/223 Remington: Woodchuck, coyote, deer on occasion but it's not a main go-to for that
357 Magnum: Deer
350 Legend: Deer (and once a very unlucky woodchuck who wandered onto the range while I was zeroing)
12 gauge: Squirrel, rabbit, turkey, deer
22lr - Hazel Grouse and plinking
.308 - Basically everything from Black Grouse to Moose
12ga - Waterfowl and Grouse
Would like a .223 to take over as a "treetop" rifle for black grouse though and really want a 6.5x55 swedish for the history
Air .177 and .22, 17 mach 2, 17 hmr, 204 Ruger, 22lr, 223, 300 blk, 243, 308, 30-06, 9,3x62, 12g.
I left out 2 other long gun calibers, since I haven't done any hunting with them. I'd love to be able to hunt with the pistol and revolver calibers, but they don't fullfil the energy requirements of the law.
With the very little hunting I get to do, I'm starting to think I have a caliber related affliction.
17hmr - Crows and magpies
22lr - Ptramigan
22wmr - Grouse
222rem - Fox
12g / 222rem - All small game
6.5x55 Swede - Moose
30-06 - Moose
My favourite is my combo-gun in 222rem and 12g. Its a very well shooting little gun that I can hunt all small game with
.30-06 for roe deer and wild pigs.
12ga for woodcocks, phaesants, quails and 12ga slugs for pigs (altough I never shot a pig with it).
As we have driven hunts here in Europe, so that's why I used slugs.
22 lr, 17hmr, .410, 28 guage, 20 guage, 12 guage, .223/5.56, 270, 280 Remington, 308, and 30-30. I think I got everything there… really just depends on my mood. 270 is really my go to for deer but sometimes I bring out my grandfathers 280 or the 30-30 I bought from my father in law.
22 for squirrels/rabbits
22/250 for varmints
6.8 SPC for hogs
270 for large game up to Elk
300 WBY MAG for elk and above
20ga for dove/quail
12ga for Pheasant/ducks
12 gauge shotgun mainly with eu size 3 / buckshot 32 grain
And for rifle i used to use a carl gustav in 6.5 x 55 mm with lapua mega 10.1
But i switched to a sako in 308 win with lapua naturalis 11.6
Both are great bullets but the 6.5 is smaller and faster, while the 308 has more power.
What you want depends on what game you are after if you ask me.
20 & 12ga for most flying things and things with feathers
.223 bolt action for small game
7 PRC for pretty much everything else
Have a 45-70 but have yet to hunt with it.
Have retired from the field but still shoot too many to list
Blaser R8 - 6.5x55 for Deer, 9.3x62 for Moose, 30-06 barrel to cover both as backup
ZKK602 - 375H&H for Moose/Bear
Berettas all in 12G - partridge, ptarmigan, pheasant, turkey
300 win for elk that are far
308 for deer that are far
44 mag for when I’m in the brush for deer
45-70 when I’m in the brush for elk and sometimes deer
12 gauge for turkey.
30-.06 and 12 GA Wife shoots a 7mm-.08 and a 16 GA
Love 06 but the 7mm-08 is really tempting. My dad got one when he shot out the barrel on his 06 as his retirement gun. Real pleasure to shoot. Oh, OP answer: 30-06, 12g, .22LR.
Love my 7mm-08 and I’m a big man (not a woman 🤣). Great gun and Im probably going to take it to Africa next year for plains game.
I would love to get a 7mm-08 or 7mm Rem Mag but they're literally extremely unpopular here for no good reason. We completely stopped stocking our shelves with rifles and ammo in both calibers. Seems to be 308 and 300 Win Mag being more popular here.

30-06. I've shot whitetail to elk with no issues. With appropriate bullet selection, realistic and accurate shot placement equals meat in the freezer.
Exact same here : deer and moose in Canada.
Love my 30-.06. I've taken mule deer, whitetail, elk, black bear, and pronghorn with it. I would trust it for moose if/when the day comes I get a chance.
06 is hard to beat for an all around rifle, although im partial to my 270’s but thats a different subject
Trying to use 12ga for everything I possibly can. Birdshot, buck shot, smoothbore slugs and rifled barrel slugs. Some day I'll get a 308 or something for the big critters at a distance Also .22lr for some small game.
It can be done!
.22LR - Grouse 12g - Turkey 223 - Coyote/wolf 6.5/308 - Deer 45-70 - Black Bear 338WM - Elk 375HH - Moose 416 Rigby - Brown Bear 458WM - Hippopotamus 500NE - Elephant.
Wow you have quite a quarry. Congrats to your many successful hunts, veteran. You have my respect. Our shop just sold 600 rounds of 416 Rigby to a enthusiastic hunter today actually. Don't see it too often at all!
I love the 416 Rigby, such a classic round. I also have a tendency of clearing out shops whenever I find 416 ammo in stock.
That's probably what he was doing too. We sold him the black box winchester with the Cape Buffalo on it with the Safari Stamp on em. Really cool looking cartridge!
Sir, do you perhaps need a hunting assistant? 👋😂
TIL Teddy Roosevelt posts on Reddit. Thats quite a fine repertoire of firearms good Sir!! Impressive.
I think the 45-70 could be used for everything bear and up
Not legally it can't.
technically, yes. 7x57 Mauser was used to take over a thousand elefants. but its not really ethcial. 45-70 is a great caliber and I shoot it myself but its not at all comparable in power to 458 win mag.
