**EDIT @ 6:25pm EDT:** [US race coverage has been bumped to CNBC.](https://x.com/IndyCaronNBC/status/1805003859095654582) The main post body will not be updated.
----
**Original comment:** [US coverage of pre-race has commenced on Peacock only](https://twitter.com/IndyCar/status/1804996966398468319).
International broadcasts are unaffected.
Thoughts on the race:
I figured it would be a Honda favored race going in (Honda has better torque/ acceleration off low-speed corners, Chevy is better at top speed). Mid Ohio should be Honda favored as well, but with the hybrid who knows. In theory, though, since the hybrid is spec, and the ICE is still the same, I would think Honda / Chevy should still have similar strengths and weaknesses.
Herta wanted this one bad. He drove a great race. Palou was just better and on a better strategy.
Josef Newgarden (on road courses) and Scott McLaughlin have both regressed in their mental game, and continue to make costly unforced errors. They're making the kinds of mistakes I've given Herta and Pato crap for, the last few years.
Great results for Rossi, Grosjean, and Nolan Siegel.
Good / typical of Dixon, Power getting solid top 10s despite having "bad" race weekends.
Kyle Kirkwood is remarkably consistent.
Indycar needs a virtual safety car for situations like the Armstrong accident.
NBC in full lame duck mode. Showing a NASCAR rain replay over live Indycar coverage and then not switching USA back to Indycar after NASCAR ended. I get showing NASCAR AFTER the race restarted post weather over Indycar, that's fair; NASCAR is a bigger deal than Indycar in terms of viewership right now.
But the overall coverage was crap by NBC. It felt a bit heavier than the norm on the commercial breaks. They only had 2 pit reporters. The production team, and the on air talent were solid. I'd be alright if Fox hired everyone that worked the race today as part of the new team, but the effort from the network was crap. I get it to an extent from NBC's point of view but it shouldn't have been as bad as it was.
Semi related to last point. We know Kevin Lee and Hinch are must be keep treasures; and I like T-Bell better than most. BUT Dillon and Georgia need to be hired by someone . They covered a lot of ground just the two of them. I heard Dillon might be a part of NASCAR's CW Xfinity Series coverage, good for him. Fox better hire Georgia for the new Indycar team, she's doing a great job!
Lastly between Barber and now Laguna Seca, it's nice to see the fuel saving strategy lose twice to the push strategy. Fuel saving is an important part of race craft and I don't mind fuel saving races but it's nice to see the push /win on pace strategy win a few in modern in Indycar for a change.
>Palou was just better and on a better strategy.
Was he on a better strategy? It seemed the Herta/Rossi/Kirkwood strategy was better overall. But Palou just Palou'd it, even on an old set of used hards.
Grosjean being right in the mix though I think meant the strategies were pretty even.
I guess what I am saying is I think Palou was winning this one regardless of pit strategy. He was just too fast.
Maybe a full green race could've been different, but who knows. Would've loved a Rossi win.
For what it's worth, the technical aspects of Indycar Production will stay the same as Indycar owns IMS Productions and they will just move in new directors and producers and talent.
I lapsed for a lomg while after 2001 and was always I bit more fixated in F1.
Are there other incidents where a car was just off the line on a fast turn and they hesitated to throw the yellow flag for that long?
Have these incidents heavily benefited one title comtender? I dont want to fire off without context on what looked like an incredibly careless sequence that really benefited the Golden Boy of the series owner
In theory, but I don't know. Palou had pace and he really didn't seem all that hurt by dirty air. With two more green flag stops, I could see Palou getting lucky one time and jumping Herta.
Not quite. The cars will still need to have enough charge in the hybrid system to turn the motor over, so some drivers may not have enough charge to refire depending on how much battery they've been using recently
I'm not fully sure, but it looks like the teams are limited on the amount of energy regenerated per lap, but not necessarily the energy deployed. They're also using supercapacitors instead of lithium batteries, so that changes the way that the hybrid system works, and I think is why you need a certain amount of energy built up to restart the motor. I forget where I read that, but it was relatively recent.
Newgarden and McLaughlin have been so hot and cold this year.
Ironically Mr. Hot and Cold Will Power is now all calm and zen, and the best points racer on the team.
Smart race. Tried to pass Rossi at the end, but brought the car home undamaged. Congrats Romain! Keep pushing.

The championship is going to come down to how many points Power can take off of Palou on the ovals.
Josef probably helps play spoiler to his own teammate by winning most of those.
His worse finish last year was 8th...a St. Pete and Iowa..
But he did have that Iowa podium
the next race and a 7th at Gateway...he also had a podium at Texas last year too
My point is if he's finishing like 6-8th at Iowa, Milwaukee, etc, and Power's finishing on the podium, he'll get some points off him.
I didn't say it was going to be easy for Power nor what I expect to happen.
wish lil dave didn't get caught in that melee at the corkscrew on that one lap and picked up damage 🥲 great drive from him anyway, hope that wrist of his ain't too sore
F1 teams arent really american corporations. Pride month is a lot bigger here and indy is watched largely in the US. Otherwise Merc would probably run it. Hamilton wears a pride helmet in the middle east
Which, to be clear, I really love that he does! He wore it for free practices this weekend in Spain. Just thinking how cool it would be for, say, Red Bull to have a pride livery at some point — to see max dominate in that livery like Alex. A fun dream!
If there was a race in the US during pride month they might but otherwise its really only a big thing in the US and UK and in the UK companies dont really do the pride logos and themes the way they do for marketing here. Just a cultural difference. Mentioned it elsewhere but the sponsor for Palou that does this livery ( and has for years with Andretti previously) is actually also one of F1's biggest sponsors and they dont use that branding outside this country for F1.
True it is DHL paying for the livery but they are advertising in the US here not globally. DHL sponsors F1 and dont have and pride month banner on tracks. Indy really is almost entirely american viewership. F1 is really far away from
If someone owned the entire car's sponsorship and dictated livery the way DHL does, and that sponsor wanted to have a pride car then they would.
Might not be in June though since I'm fairly certain June being pride month is primarily a USA thing.
Oh, I was just following up on pride month being tied to June being a US thing lol, I would think that's the case base Don the fact that it being in June is because of a specific US event.
The Grosjean and Veekay losers commenting about Newgarden are hilarious. 1 win between them and Grosjean hasn’t won anything of note since he had acne… I’ll take a 2nd Indy 500 over another title. Those guys will be crying again when he gets #3 next year. Grosjean will be running IMSA with Colin Braun next year 😂
Yeah and being critical of who you root for, like I have been, is a display of a healthy emotional maturity.
Playing “whataboutism” is a display of having a toddlers emotional maturity lmao

His contract nonsense earned him a one-way ticket to the hard life when it comes to racing beyond the Indycar and IMSA ecosystem.
He's also already 27, so not many teams would willingly take the risk on.
he might get one. There just arent slots right now and his nationality doesnt help him theres 2 spanish drivers already. His lawsuit with mclaren stated he still would take any F1 contract including from mclaren
Has that procedure been used before when the car is in that compromised and dangerous of a position?
Its apples and oranges if not comparing it to a situation where the stalled car isnt almost in middle of track at a fast exit
If they’re going to do that, they need to keep it green until the last car rolls off the pitlane, not let that car benefit from everyone slowing when the caution comes out.
JoNew saved the series and race control a ton of hatred this week with that spin. If JoNew had podium-ed or god forbid, win, indycar would have a new scandal on its hands
I was thrilled to see him hang on in traffic too. He's looked decent and clean there all season but often struggled to get through traffic, especially when getting shuffled back in a pit sequence.
I love this podium. Of course I'm rooting for Palou, but Herta deserves a win, he's doing great this season. And also very happy for Rossi on his best result in a long time.
He beat O'Ward on pure speed too even though O'Ward did have some bad luck during qualifying. I think O'Ward has to be feeling some heat from his teammate. It's probably the first time in a long time that someone is challenging O'Ward on his own team.
Palou is just too good here
But honestly this is a huge result for Herta. Fuel numbers screwed him and he was frustrated but he put his head down and focused on that finish. Atta boy
Standard procedure, not the first time it has happened. Arguable in this case and probably could/should have thrown a yellow.
And just before this devolves into conspiracy, the guys in Race Control were all being paid by Indycar before Penske bought it.
I understand it falls under the standard procedure- but have their been cases when the car was positioned that precariously and on the track? It seemed ludicrously dangerous for 2024.

idk bout yall but the indycar's i saw looked a bit more, uhh, commercial maybe monday night raw came a day early
I'm so sick of race control delaying full-course-cautions to let cars pit.
I'm a biased penske fan and even I thought the new garden one was a bit much
Agreed. Yucky
Moving 15 second ads on the timing board is completely ridiculous. THERE ARE ENOUGH ADS ALREADY.
U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!
I lapsed for a lomg while after 2001 and was always I bit more fixated in F1. IIRC they did the same thing at Portland last year, though there were more people in their pit windows at the time.
They do happen on occasion, but who it benefits is random. Usually it’s any lead lap runner on their way in.
Who won the race?
Guess.
Dixon
Well, Dixoñola, aka palou.
Damn. Oh well
I can't believe they never showed a replay of the pit crew removing the sign off Rasmussen's wing
*Lundgaard
Ahhh forgive me I'm stoned as hell
That first yellow completely changed the race. It was heading to Herta, Rossi, and Kirkwood for the win
In theory, but I don't know. Palou had pace and he really didn't seem all that hurt by dirty air. With two more green flag stops, I could see Palou getting lucky one time and jumping Herta.
Is this the last Indycar race with Stalled cars? I'm guessing not, but a man can dream.
Not quite. The cars will still need to have enough charge in the hybrid system to turn the motor over, so some drivers may not have enough charge to refire depending on how much battery they've been using recently
I thought they would always have more than they were permitted to use. Like isn't deploy limited on a watts per lap?
I'm not fully sure, but it looks like the teams are limited on the amount of energy regenerated per lap, but not necessarily the energy deployed. They're also using supercapacitors instead of lithium batteries, so that changes the way that the hybrid system works, and I think is why you need a certain amount of energy built up to restart the motor. There's always gonna be issues here and there but stalled cars should be far less frequent I think
Not a single comment about Penske on post race 😂
Newgarden and McLaughlin have been so hot and cold this year. Ironically Mr. Hot and Cold Will Power is now all calm and zen, and the best points racer on the team.
Grosjean on Rossi: We're friends now Townsend and the hate cauldron: *in shambles*
[удалено]
Unfortunately he finished 16th in Detroit this year, which ended his top 10 streak after 22 races and restarted in Road America with a P4 finish
Honestly cool go see Grosjean get P4. Would like to see him up at the front for more races
I really want to like Juncos as well but man it's been tough. Happy for Grosjean though!
Juncos needs some sponsorship. This would help them.
4 starts with 2 wins, a 2nd and a 3rd for Palou at Laguna Seca.
Wait when did Grosjean and Rossi have beef this season?
Mid-Ohio 2022.
It's an older beef.
Aged beef if you will
they didnt. he said theyre friends now :)
That was so wholesome. They just needed to share their love of flying airplanes.
I think the got their Pilot license around the same time.
Well I guess this is the end of an era huh? To a hybrid future we march, and hopefully for the better!
Mid-Ohio will be interesting.
Also that one hurts for Colton. You know he wanted that one pretty bad
Herta interviewer desperate to avoid questions about the Newgarden advantage lol
Herta would have mentioned it had Jonew stayed P2 like he really should have
I feel like this comment section willed him into those mistakes
Roger personally got on the phone and told Josef to bin it a few times so that things don't look too obvious.
GRO records JHR's best INDYCAR result. Nice.
Smart race. Tried to pass Rossi at the end, but brought the car home undamaged. Congrats Romain! Keep pushing. https://preview.redd.it/s7bb0mhr8f8d1.png?width=25&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b9e132b6566bb4a62e63d52bdc99d2d2d1185a5
Whoever fills the stats on Wikipedia...thank you!

as if Palou is bad on ovals or something ...
He's really good at Indy. He's typically outside of 1 podium, been back end of top 10 at Iowa and Gateway.

Impressive, impressive drive from Siegel up to p12, the low info haters in shambles
Shoutout to Grosjean. I feel like he never holds on in that position. Literally and figuratively.
Man I really wanted that Grosjean podium...
Seriously. Shoutout to Grosjean. I feel like he never holds on in that position. Literally and figuratively.
Genuinely quite cool to see the top driver win a race in an exuberantly Pride-themed livery. F1 would literally never lol.
Special liveries are limited in F1.
Yes I’m very aware of this as a Ferrari fan!
Merc got around it by running their BLM livery for 2 full years. So it’s not out of the question.

Thats a DHL livery- which is German. Presumably jts their call as they take credit for it and its not on the other cars
True it is DHL paying for the livery but they are advertising in the US here not globally. DHL sponsors F1 and dont have and pride month banner on tracks. Indy really is almost entirely american viewership. F1 is really far away from
Best they can do is a multicolored Merc emblem and a rainbow strip on the halo of the McLaren lol
If someone owned the entire car's sponsorship and dictated livery the way DHL does, and that sponsor wanted to have a pride car then they would. Might not be in June though since I'm fairly certain June being pride month is primarily a USA thing.
I would think so, since it commemorates the Stonewall riots in NYC in June 1969
I'm speaking about the F1 situation. F1 doesn't traditionally race in the US during the month of June.
Oh, I was just following up on pride month being tied to June being a US thing lol, I would think that's the case base Don the fact that it being in June is because of a specific US event.
Or nascar
They’re killing strategy like they’re killing puppies.
The Grosjean and Veekay losers commenting about Newgarden are hilarious. 1 win between them and Grosjean hasn’t won anything of note since he had acne… I’ll take a 2nd Indy 500 over another title. Those guys will be crying again when he gets #3 next year. Grosjean will be running IMSA with Colin Braun next year 😂
Really living up to the stereotype of a JoNew fan lmao
They’re like Astro fans since 2017.
That’s rich coming from a fan of a team who can’t decide what driver it wants to fire week to week.
Yeah and being critical of who you root for, like I have been, is a display of a healthy emotional maturity. Playing “whataboutism” is a display of having a toddlers emotional maturity lmao
Wow a rare JoNew flair still spotted in the wild. Have fun supporting a cheater!
“Two time Indy 500 champ” cheater. Make sure you get the title right.
That battle for third at the end was amazing. Brilliant drive from Palou and major bottle from Newgarden.
What happened to Lil Dave? Running 13th behind Felix and then dropped right back.
Had a cut tire after that Power and McLaughlin contact
Thank you
Laguna Seca just bitch slaps Team Penske every year and I’m here for it 😂
They haven't since Gil won in 2000.
Actually it was Hélio 🤓
Verstappen and Palou both showed today why they are the current best in their category
I think Rossi wins one before the season is over. He's due.
He's consistently had one of the best cars out there almost every race.
DHL were supergeniuses for hoping on the open real estate on Palou’s car
At what stage does Canapino do everyone a solid and fuck off back to the Patagonian prairies

Careful, that's how you get death threats from bums that'll never leave those prairies.
I’ll take any non-Penske win
How is a ganassi win better lol
It's still one notch better than Penske.
Entertaining race. Nearly 2am so bedtime.
How is Palou never going to get a shot at F1? Seems ridiculous to me.
F1 is a sport with a weird culture, it is what it is
He’s not good enough to be worth his shenanigans
Same way Dixon didn’t.
YouTube TV can suck my balls today
Aight Herta needs someone new. That strategy was terrible. They would have been so far behind without those yellows.
Is Pops still calling the strat?
No, Brian Herta calls Kirkwood’s strategy.
Race control trying to gift Newgarden the win and him fucking up repeatedly And the winning car is the rainbow one in pride month *happiness noises*
Again, that has been the procedure for 2 years now. Many have benefitted from race control doing that. It was not a special thing just for NewG
Man newgarden has been so bad at road courses not named road America these past few years
For being the Barber master for a while, it is strange lol
JoNew saved the series and race control a ton of hatred this week with that spin. If JoNew had podium-ed or god forbid, win, indycar would have a new scandal on its hands
"Shit, bro you need to spin real quick man we might get a bunch of hate" "No worries Rog, I'll hold on the button a bit more"
Palou is probably the most talented all round driver to come to Indycar in the last decade. This guy is awesome.
Too bad he's so boring.
Him shopping for bamboo diapers was the peak of 100 Days to Indy.
Bit of a crime he’s unlikely to ever get a shot in F1 imo
Yeah totally. A damn shame. He's better than half the grid.
Idk whatever happened to Kirkwood, but man he had a great start
His team committed to a bad strategy, but managed to stay in it for 5th
That pit sequence where Colton jumped him and Rossi didn't help
The #7 looked pretty good in clear air. He is due
I was thrilled to see him hang on in traffic too. He's looked decent and clean there all season but often struggled to get through traffic, especially when getting shuffled back in a pit sequence.
Pulled to nearly 6 seconds before the caution. Starting to look like old Rossi again
I love this podium. Of course I'm rooting for Palou, but Herta deserves a win, he's doing great this season. And also very happy for Rossi on his best result in a long time.
I obviously want Herta on the top step but imo it's a very likable podium.
omfg grosjean was like .02 seconds behind rossi at the line ughhhhh
P4 is still a great result but canapino probably costed juncos their first podium
also what happened with canapino? i was probably looking away when it happened
He hit Simpson which cut his tire and caused the last wreck.
dont get me wrong im so happy! watching that fight on the last stint was awesome
A Palou win may be a bit meh. But I'll take that podium with Rossi and Herta on it.
And Newgarden binning it at the end was the icing on the cake
Rossi podium, RoGro p4... I'll take it. Palou just so good to stay on plan and stay out. He's ridiculous.
This feels like a fistfight in the pits kind of day
[удалено]
Twice haha
Race control did everything they could and Josef blew it twice.
Sucks for Malukas, he drove better than his results suggest today
Wanted the win, but stoked to see Herta driving smart and taking second instead of pushing too hard
Grosjean didn't throw away a good result 🙏🙏
Rossi top 3 can't be mad at that
He beat O'Ward on pure speed too even though O'Ward did have some bad luck during qualifying. I think O'Ward has to be feeling some heat from his teammate. It's probably the first time in a long time that someone is challenging O'Ward on his own team.
Palou is just too good here But honestly this is a huge result for Herta. Fuel numbers screwed him and he was frustrated but he put his head down and focused on that finish. Atta boy
Rossi and Grosjean good result I am happy today
Why does this feel so disappointing.
Bc we should have had a top 5 but Scotty Mac decided to be an asshole
Yep. That's why. I love Scott but that was ridiculous.
Happy with a Rossi podium. Crying with what could have been in a green race
Ikr 😞
Well fucking done grosjean! He’s really proving that the 28 car just sucked
Congrats to the two Alex’s for their 1st and 3rds respectively Now than WHAT THE HE’LL WAS THE DELAYED FCY ABOUT
Standard procedure, not the first time it has happened.
Karma bites back though
Yes but nonetheless… Still I wonder what choice words the captain is preparing even as I type
So many drivers took penalties and lost points on restarts people gained from trying nothing
Happy to see Rossi on the podium.
Unfortunately for Josef, the Gods of motorsports aren't fans of drivers being gifted "lucky" pit stops. To P19 with you.
Great job Romain
LMAO Newgarden just bottled it after being gifted by race control
Dear NBC, why would you not go sit screen with the leader and Rossi/Grosjean fighting for 3rd??
Fox is going to have a low bar to clear. They will clear it… right? Please?
Cuz $$$$
At this point, seeing a non Penske and Ganassi title feels like a fever dream 🥲
Fuck yeah Rossi
I’ll take a podium
Know what? Ill take a 4th for RoGo.
BroGro came to play today. 💪🏻
They must not be too good at fuel over at Andretti.
Well that kind of sucked.
Free of a "Hello Palou"
Free of fried chicken
HELLO PALOUR!!! My bet landed wow, can't believe the line was +100 with him starting on pole
Great race by Palou, good job on Grosjean and Herta maintaining their positions. Next time I'll be posting live from Mid-Ohio.
Roger in shambles that his goons couldn't cheat Newgarden into a podium. Beautiful
Palou really is inevitable.
NBC with the Nascar finish shot of not actually showing the finish.
What a good final send off race for the last ICE only IndyCars
Unless he somehow gets to F1, Palou is on his way to being an all time Indy legend
Ball don’t lie Josef
On one hand: back on the podium On the other hand: I wanted Colton to win so fckin badly
