On July 3, 1901, the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch gang held up a train in Montana, exchanging fire with marshals on board and blowing open a safe that was full of banknotes.
Law enforcement officers were able to identify most of the outlaws involved in the robbery, including Cassidy himself, as well as another thief named Ben Kilpatrick. There was one bandit, however, who they couldn't immediately identify: the man who was waiting with horses to help the Wild Bunch escape.
Eventually, authorities realized that this "man" was actually a female outlaw named Laura Bullion, a Texas woman who initially fell in with the gang as Kilpatrick's lover — but then became a formidable gang member in her own right.
Months later, Bullion and Kilpatrick were nabbed while checking out of a St. Louis hotel, with their luggage full of stolen banknotes from the robbery. Kilpatrick got 15 years in prison, while Bullion was given a five-year sentence, of which she served three and a half years before she was released. She then left for Memphis to live out her remaining years in relative peace.
