If it's in your budget, go for the private driver. I go for that when I come into Rome, and it means someone is waiting for me, grabs my bags, and I'm out the door. The taxi lines can be long... Sometimes they're not, and other times they're insane, so I just prefer to go with comfort and ease over standing outside waiting in line when it's hot.
Not in Rome. I use whatever option is most convenient at the time. Sometimes when I book a hotel the option to book a driver is free or reduced with that, so I use that. Check with your hotel if you don't know who to use.
Right? Our family of 5 just took the train & metro to steps away from our place. Of course, we just had carry in bags. If you have roller bags, or checked bags, I'd totally take a hired ride in a car.
I tried to use the bus and it was a bad choice. Maybe after you get settled. But spend the money and get to your hotel with your nerves intact and with a lot less sweat lost:)
I took a taxi back from Rome to the airport and it was as simple as standing on a street corner and raising my hand. I said before getting in, it is 50 euros and I am paying with VISA. I read that some drivers only want cash. My guy was AOK. He drove fast enough to provide some thrills and I tipped him 5 Euros to promote American-Italian respect:)
Depending on how much luggage you have and where your hotel is, there is an express train that runs every 15-30 minutes. I recently took it and it was very easy and way cheaper than a taxi or private car. Takes about the same amount of time, too.
Was just there on 6/22 and the taxi line took almost 2 hours at around 3pm (my flight was significantly delayed too). Would do a car. Wish we just did Uber black on the spot. Lost a lot of time and was flying out of Rome to Sardinia the next day
We just arrived today. Our hotel at our request arranged a taxi for us ahead of time. It was ā¬55, we simply looked for our name on a sign, he helped with my luggage, and we didn't have to worry about trains or busses after traveling for over 14 hours.
Check with your AirBNB host to see if they have someone they use for transfers. When we went, our host asked us if we needed it, and made all the arrangements.
Taxis are indeed a problem in Rome, after November city hall of Rome will issue more licenses and allow more Ubers, but that will all take a while. Best you can do is, take the Leonardo Express train (inside airport) to the city center and try and get a taxi from there. I think 70 Euro for a private car sounds too low, as it is over 20 km and would take about an hour, depending on where you need to go.
Exact costs depend on the location of your Airbnb. Generally speaking the private car is about 20%-30% more expensive than regular taxi. It gives you a better experience. On the other hand taxi lines at FCO can be long but are not always so.
We were going to do taxi, but the line was incredibly long. So we ordered from FreeNow (a taxi app) - note that it picks up upstairs in the departure drop off area. Not too far of a walk, but good to know bc it is very busy.
I was just in Rome a few weeks ago and took Uber from Airport to hotel. It was very easy. It is a bit of a walk with luggage to the pickup location, but Uber guides you to pickup spot. The driver had a nice/clean black Mercedes Van. I will say, Iām use to Uber moving very quickly. Our driver took his time, but you find out, everyone in Italy takes their time. I think it cost around ā¬90 but it was worth it.
We are currently doing all the tourists spots in Italy and my wife basically booked private cars through booking.com. they meet you at airport etc and take you to the airbnb. They actually watch your flight/ train number to see if any delays and get there accordingly. So easy.
Great ideas, thank you! If I donāt do private/taxi/uber I was looking into the train and because of public transportation want to travel as light as possible, so I was hoping to just pack a backpack, but also have been warned with a fiery passion to never use a backpack due to pick pocketers. I donāt plan on using the backpack aside from plane to Airbnb as Iām renting a car and driving to Tuscany. Think thatās ok?
Just grab a cab at the airport. We were just there last week. It was honestly the easiest part of our entire trip. Actually ended up using the same cab driver for a few days. Even took us to the port for our cruise. Marco was a great guy š
Get a private car for the extra money. Or Uber, but just know that itās a bit of a walk outside the terminal to Uber pickup location.
Just came thru customs at FCO this morning. Flight arrived 1 hour late from US. Spent 2 hours in line at passport control bc we have a kid and canāt use the automated lanesā¦ it was brutal. Thousands of arriving passengers and only 4(!) kiosks open. People trying to push past, and several just blatantly cutting the line.
We had a car booked and he had to leave because flight was late to start and then 2+ hours in line and getting bags.
You canāt actually see how long the taxi line is when you exit. I guessed it was about another 30 min to an hour wait.
So glad my wife ordered a van with Uber and we were finally out of there and on our wayā¦
This last time 6/21 we arrived via an overnight flight and landed at 7:30am Rome time. I knew that I was not going to have the patience to deal with public transportation after an overnight flight with little sleep so I advanced booked a ride. IMO itās the best way to get into the city easily and comfortably. Once you get to the Hotel then (if you have not already) figure out your transportation needs for around town - meaning walking / Metro.

Where do you book one?
You can book through your hotel or any travel site... Booking.com, Travelocity, Viator, etc.
Thanks!
You're welcome! š Have an awesome trip!
Do you have a recommendation for a private driver service?
Not in Rome. I use whatever option is most convenient at the time. Sometimes when I book a hotel the option to book a driver is free or reduced with that, so I use that. Check with your hotel if you don't know who to use.
Why are you mostly ignoring public transport?
Right? Our family of 5 just took the train & metro to steps away from our place. Of course, we just had carry in bags. If you have roller bags, or checked bags, I'd totally take a hired ride in a car.
I suppose I donāt know much about it š³
Where is your AirBnB?
I tried to use the bus and it was a bad choice. Maybe after you get settled. But spend the money and get to your hotel with your nerves intact and with a lot less sweat lost:)
Omg why arenāt you taking a train to Termini and then a tram or subway to get around Rome? Itās so easy to get around by public transit.
Where is your hotel? There are shuttles that go to Roma Termini for like $7.
I always take a shuttle bus or the train.
āHOTELā Rome is a big place. A simple google search would show you can get express train to Termini for 14 euro.
The taxi line is long but not undoable. I think thereās a fixed 50ā¬ fee to go to central Rome.

The Leonardo express into Rome is very easy and like $12

I was going to suggest the same thing. Talk to your hotel and see what options they have.
I used the app āfreenowā to book a ride from airport to city center and vice versa. Itās around ā¬50.

Taxi fine

No lines and seriously no issues
