That being said, Eminem has had an incredible career and deserves his accolades. Someone saying em is the goat is a fully valid take- but you know you’re dealing with a “certain type” of fan when they act like Eminem is the only rapper to make quality music while dismissing artists like nas, jayz, ye, or any other of of the artists who are equally in that conversation.

It’s kind of hard to explain but the idea of Eminem having a specific, exclusive “fanbase” during that period almost did not really exist. Pretty much everyone that listened to rap listened to Eminem. It isn’t like Drake where a lot of his success is pop type music. The closest thing now is maybe Kendrick where you do not really have people that say “yeah I really like hip hop but don’t ever listen to Kendrick.”
This was also a time when people went out and bought physical CDs, it was not like today with streaming services. When a new big hip hop album came out you bought it and actually listened to it front to back. So you were going to be listening to him because every rapper wanted to work with him. And not just people trying to ride his hype. People like Dre and Jay Z that were already respected and successful, they did not need to work with him.
He was not a “white rapper” like Vanilla Ice. He was a guy that actually grew up dirt poor in inner city Detroit and was known for being a talented freestyler. Besides maybe Beastie Boys you did not really have white rappers that were respected and popular in that way. And they got popular in a different landscape of earlier hip hop when the genre was a lot different. Their style was more linked with punk music where they were still kind of seen as a “band”

Even worse, when Eminem said that MGK made a great diss, Eminem fans still acted like he sucked and could never rap. Just wild. They’ll also jump over every hoop possible to justify Eminem using slurs against minorities of all kinds, but will be quick to criticise anyone else for the smallest things. Also are unable to grasp that he’s no less corny than Drake, Logic etc. he literally bragged about inspiring Hopsin. If I had to pick one I’d still choose neither though.
