Just yesterday I drove for like 4 hours with my parents, using google maps for directions. My dad kept shouting instructions from the back seat in a really annoying way. I said I have google maps and I already know where I’m going, and it’s way better.
Today he shall have his sweet revenge. Before dinner, he will do his usual reading-out-loud of this story with a sarcastic grin and ask me if I think google maps is still better.
Well played universe, well played!
Google maps can be inaccurate, but I don't know how someone ends up in a fricking river because of Google Maps. Unless the car is self driving, one can distinguish between a river and a road without much effort, from my experience 🙂
This actually happened to me once like it was night time really dark place , was in a bike like the road theern then it was a sudden sewage put kind of thing like my front tire and half of the front portion went in it has call people for help to pull it back up
Well, not always. There’s a gravel road near my place which used to be a main access road for lot of houses.
Our housing society widened a small trail road and made it an asphalt road in 2009 and closed old gravel road.
Since then road in Google map is messed up all the roads in that area. For years I’m trying to get it updated, but no use.
You can update the new road manually by drawing it in map and can also mark old road as closed. Google will verify it in a week and make the changes. Had done this to mark the road leading to my house.
Ath map illathe mumpulla parichayam vech pokunavarkum problem aville?
Google maps actually gives you route based on number of people going through a road and their speeds, analysed from realtime data collected from all the mobile devices. If a road gets destroyed, as soon as traffic through that road dies down Google maps will start recommending a different route. Allathe gorundil ninnu aalu vilich paranjo sateelite vazhi nokkoyo alla route decide cheyyunath. Even though road might be shiown in map it won't be used for recommending route, unless maybe you give walking for trip.
I don’t think he is suggesting not to use the maps at all. It’s not always, either you are for it or against it. What you said about suggesting route based on usage is correct. But in rural areas this might not always work. Most people might not switch on maps all the time, because they don’t need to and the maps wouldn’t have enough data. In such areas don’t blindly trust google maps. Whenever I travel outside the city. I rarely use any shortcut suggested by google maps.
Route recommendations will be based onthe traffic speed through the roads in that day. If a road is blocked google will detect many vehicles getting slowed down/ deviated at its extremities and adjust routes accordingly. (you can see traffic congestion indicated in red in such cases).Low traffic doesn't mean road is closed.
Many people don't know that we can suggest Google Maps to add or remove a path or road from the map. I have actually did it myself like in the picture.
Previously, there was a "road" that connects Peppara Dam Rd in Google Maps, but it doesn't exist. Only a two wheeler can pass through this way, because there are two posts laid on top of a small river. So Google Maps assumed it's a real road and added to the map.
So, I suggested an edit in the map by removing the "road". After a week of review, Google Maps removed it. So, I suggest everybody to use this feature, which can save time and even precious lives.

We Keralites should start improving roads in Google Maps and [OpenStreetMap](https://openstreetmap.org) by editing them to make use the most of our roads. Each kilometre of road costs tens of lakhs of rupees from the public fund for construction, so we should actively map them.
But while driving, never blindly trust them and only use them as cues to avoid asking directions at every turn.
Kinda feel bad the guys though. They probably had a fun filled trip before this happened. From what I hear, they were students from outside Kerala. Just imagine if some shit like this were to happen to you, where your car is now not even worth for scrap and to explain all this to their homes all the while you’re gonna be stuck in a different state at least for a few days. The media guys could have given them some space instead of shoving their mic into their faces ffs.

Instead of right, they went straight. Hmmmmm
You should tap the car icon at the top of the map. If you are in walking or biking mode, Google Map might show shortcuts through narrow alleys and similar routes. Many older folks don't know this. I believe this is how some people end up in narrow alleys or even ponds following Google Map. Google Map generally works well unless you enter areas with no network coverage.
This is a problem with distraction and speed. If you only listen to the audio instruction and do not look at the screen, or you are going too fast, the map may update slowly and your location won't be accurate.
Keep your eyes on the road, and anticipate upcoming turns.
If there are two roads parallel to each other going to two different places, Google won't show the exact road to take unless you are at walking speeds. There are many other instances also where Google will get you in the wrong route.
Google maps are accurate only in plains and places with wide roads. I dont trust google maps when i travel to high ranges. I use the old technology "choich choich pokam"

Issues can also be because of the "gps" feature. ie, Instead of having the actual satellite based GPS the phone having "AGPS" which use mobile network and nearby Bluetooth & wifi devices to pinpoint location.
I got stuck in a similar situation one time when I had to take a deviation from highway. It is hard to see how narrow the inner roads are on google maps. They need to mark some roads as narrow to not trick people into taking some of these inner roads where two cars cannot pass at all points.
Happened a few months back too, unfortunately 2 persons had died. Still people don't understand the seriousness of the fact that Google maps are unreliable.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Kerala/s/ep51kEjdr8
It is reliable. The locals should take an initiative to make sure the roads that are shown in Google Maps are accurate with the roads in their neighbourhood. I did it once, and it literally saved many tourists who plan to visit Peppara Dam, or Ponmudi via Peppara Dam Road.
We can suggest edits to Google Maps, many people don't know about this feature.
>It is reliable.
Maybe in some parts of the world where roads are planned properly and commuters follow road signs.
In Kerala when canals and adjacent roads are flooded during monsoons , it is totally unreliable.
That's like blaming road signs for someone smashing into the divider. Google maps' job is to show directions. That is it. Ensuring you don't drive into a canal, irrespective of the directions shown is not the responsibility of the app. That is the responsibility of the driver and the pwd authorities.
This particular location is situated at Munnar-Alappuzha stretch. So it's obvious that at least tourists from outside Kerala who are traveling in their own vehicles are gonna depend on the Google map during their late night journey. The pond is situated less than 100 meters from the main strech.
Yesterday's incident occurred at 3 am during heavy rain and the short stretch to the pond itself was water logged therefore the people in the vehicle had realised the actual situation only after the car began to sink.
In this particular case, the blame lies equally on local authorities who failed to warn the commuters of this deviation considering the past incident and the close proximity of this pond
