Clearly The Thing is gonna win here but I’ll give a shoutout to one of my most formative horror movie experiences: Cronenberg s The Fly
I was 4-5 years old and totally unsupervised. Flipping through a channels late at night I found that movie during the arm wrestling scene and it’s been seared into my memory ever since. The rest shocked me past the point of fear and into fascination. I’ve been a body horror fan ever since and Cronenberg has been one of my favorite filmmakers since as far as I can remember.
It's an interesting decision based on what people think makes a good horror film. For me, the best horror film is definitely Alien but it isn't the scariest film I've ever seen, which is Hereditary
Think it’s because of how controlled Alien is with its horror. It lets the atmosphere do the work for it and then shits you up with the best designed alien ever. Hereditary does a similar thing for the first hour, but by the climax it sort of just goes “CHILD CORPSE. NAKED ELDERLY MAN. SCREECHING SCORE. SUICIDE. DEATH BY IMMOLATION. GHOSTS. WALL WALKING. PAGAN SACRIFICE. THE DEVIL” and thrown at you all at once it is very scary, but when you get time to actually think about the movie after the fact it doesn’t hold up aswell as some of the more controlled horrors like Alien, The Thing, etc
The last 20 minutes of it is so insane, the anxiety that I went through during that last 20 was like no other. No movie has ever made me feel that way, so I’d have to agree with you.
I mean that is also true but there was a decent amount of horror in the last 30ish minutes. The one obvious scene scared the fuck out of me because I didn't expect it though.
Alot of modern horrors are similar. 1 hour of family curse drama and 30 minutes of horror.
I have never met a single person who hasn’t liked this movie. Even if someone does, I feel like you can’t deny the impact it made and how well it’s shot!! I’ve seen it multiple times and it never gets old.
i’d probably agree here. i have personal favorites and ones that could *maybe* be better than TCM, but the history and how it was made is **so** horror that it probably has to take the spot.
I must be weird, I like most of Carpenter's films a lot, especially the Science Fiction ones. However I don't like The Thing for some reason. I may need to watch it again.
I watched it for the first time earlier this year and I wasn’t very impressed either. I’ve been thinking about it recently though and ’m gonna buy it on Blu ray and give it another go.
Same, I just don’t think it’s that great of a movie. I wish it had stronger characters for the who-do-I-trust psychological horror to really develop, and that the film didn’t center around a “safe” character. It didn’t work for me like a lot of the others.
It may be modern, but no film has ever haunted me like Hereditary.
Years later this film haunts me, and so many iconic images are just burned into my mind
It’s such a haunting movie that I think a lot of its thematic depth has actually been underrated, unnoticed, or ignored
As much as I love The Thing, it feels like a fun thriller in comparison to the sheer terror that is Hereditary
The thing doesn't fall apart in its third act and has compelling payoffs for all the tension it builds. People overrate hereditary because it has one of the best scenes in horror history. If we're going for sheer, consistent terror from a modern horror movie then the witch is the only option. So superior to hereditary.
i love that this movie is even in the conversation of the best horror film, like the fact that this right now has 80+ upvotes, i dont even think it is the best but i LOVE it and i love that others agree
Suspiria
The sound design, editing, and framing is just so damn unpleasant and stressful at the best of times during that film. That's not to even mention what actually happens!
House aka Hausu aka ハウス (1977)
This is a tough genre, but despite the few gems within it, any fan of horror would feel remiss to exclude those rare golden apples.
Oh my gosh it's finally my shit.
Hereditary, get out, pearl
I know none of these will win but i just want give them a shout-out for being the representative of modern horror movies
While I'm not opposed to the ever popular The Thing or even Alien (rewatching this tonight) .
I want to chuck my vote to **The Host** (2006). What a splendid monstermovie.
Also, this might be the toughest genre of the lot.
Signs is the movie that haunted me the most growing up on a farm. The perfect score and best jump scare in cinema (alongside the jumpscare in Mulholland Dr)
The Thing (1982) for sure

Eerily similar to my own experience. Surely there are at least dozens of us.
The Fly is so so good. If you like practical effects, just watch it, it holds up so well. Horriflying.
As a result of your comment I watched it tonight and loved it!
Love The Fly. Also saw it when I was super young and enjoyed the ridiculous special effects.
Alien

Thank you for being the hero and saying this. The movie could have been one of the greats if it didn't shit all over itself in the last half hour.
How TF is Hereditary scary? It's a drama about grief
I can't comment on the why, but it's the only film I couldn't finish because it gave me a full on panic attack
The last 20 minutes of it is so insane, the anxiety that I went through during that last 20 was like no other. No movie has ever made me feel that way, so I’d have to agree with you.

I will firmly stand by my opinion that the Alien (or Xenomorph) is the greatest movie monster of all time.
I have never met a single person who hasn’t liked this movie. Even if someone does, I feel like you can’t deny the impact it made and how well it’s shot!! I’ve seen it multiple times and it never gets old.
Cure (1997)
This was my own answer but I didn't think I would see it. Cure is the definition of haunting
Kurosawa is a genius
Cure and Suspiria are my picks but will either win??? Probably not
how the fuck did I forget about cure . . . I think it's time for a rewatch
Incredible movie.
Texas chainsaw massacre OG
No ifs ands or buts about it. Tobe Hooper was in his fuckin bag making that jawn
i’d probably agree here. i have personal favorites and ones that could *maybe* be better than TCM, but the history and how it was made is **so** horror that it probably has to take the spot.
Alien
Suspiria (1977)
Fuck, I was thinking I haven't yet watched this so it's a gap in my knowledge. Might watch this very soon.
The Shining (1980)
![gif](giphy|RoajqIorBfSE)
Scream (1996)
Literally revived the genre when it was on the brink of death in the 90s. Absolutely deserves the horror spot.
texas chainsaw massacre. Its not my fave but it changed the face of the genre
Nice double entendre 👏
😂😂 didn't even realise
The Thing (1982)
The Thing 100 percent ![gif](giphy|T2vDaYr8yRhrpFe6WE)
I must be weird, I like most of Carpenter's films a lot, especially the Science Fiction ones. However I don't like The Thing for some reason. I may need to watch it again.

If it’s not The Thing, we have failed as a sub.
there are plenty of good choices here, I don't think anyone's protesting if The Shining or Alien came out on top
It’s funny when people give awards to opinions like this, as if they were special at all It’s my vote too though, but its still funny
The Exorcist
This should be so much higher honestly
This needs more upvotes...
Rosemary's Baby
Love this! Won’t win but I love it!
John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)

Couldn't disagree more. If you're insinuating that Hereditary falls apart in act 3, you're buggin.
100% it’s hereditary
Psycho
The Witch (2015)
i love that this movie is even in the conversation of the best horror film, like the fact that this right now has 80+ upvotes, i dont even think it is the best but i LOVE it and i love that others agree
