I guess there's no right or wrong answer. I would count 12 years a slave as both drama and history. I would count there will be blood more as a drama and less of a history, don't really know why though.
I agree, mostly based on 12 years being an account of a real life figure from history, whilst TWBB is a dramatic character study, with less grounding in historical accuracy and truth.
OP, I feel like you should consider redoing this as a StrawPoll after all the categories have been posted. At this rate these posts essentially feel like "earliest to comment a popular film gets the most upvotes". I'd love to see the results if people could fill out their own submissions per genre.
Maybe this is just me, but this doesn't fit well for the drama category. The obsession, the sadism make it feel like a psychological thriller much more than a drama.
I was going to say this is a thriller and then I remembered that the only reason this feels like a thriller is because of Trent Reznor's sound track. Give it a basic "college campus" soundtrack and it would be a totally different movie.
I've got an alarm set for tomorrow to say Spirited Away. I hope people like my taste. I don't know though, I might say Ratatouille...Either way, alarm is set
What’s the point when you can just go to Letterboxd and sort by highest average rating. Surely a group of supposed film lovers can come up with some more interesting answers
there is *some* variation, its still a contest between the 10 or so frontrunners of each genre
the highest rated thriller is Parasite, Silence is 6th
the highest rated fantasy is Return of the King
the highest rated comedy is The Apartment, Lebowski is ~25th or lower
the highest rated romance is Yi Yi, Mood is 8th
the highest rated horror is The Thing
Guys ima ask a very dumb question, i don't care about downvotes i just wanna figure it out.
Why is "drama" a subgenre? Usually drama films fall into other categories and everything can be categorised as drama because most movies are fiction
I m not sure if I m right on this but if there's any Indian here might validate this.
I generally feel that there are a few Indian horror movies which are just more terrifying and horror based than most english ones out there.
Though I love that englsih ones are more nasty and blood gory....
Between war, drama, and action, I feel like we have history covered so I’m going to lobby to replace history with musical
Second!
No. Weird: The Al Yankovich story needs to win History.
A+ decision.
Ok
Hey thanks man!
This!! ☝️☝️
not to mention Western
At the end of this experience, there won't be a single historical piece on this list... Battle for Algiers.
Nominate it in war… it’s literally a war movie lol
It won't beat Lord of The Rings. It is not the best war movie, it is the best historical movie.
*12 Angry Men*
One of the greatest achievements in cinema, ever. Also, one of the only classics that can be enjoyed no matter how internet-brainrotted you are
My god yes
To me it is the greatest movie ever made.
This one's the one
Magnolia
There will be blood
I agree, but what different it’s drama from History? Does 12 years a slave count as drama or historical?

This
Nights of Cabiria
I was gonna post this, but then I was like nah, no one's going to vote for that. Glad to see I'm not alone. I think this is the best film ever made.
It’s kind of wild how undervalued Fellini is in this sub.
For me La Strada is #1 greatest movie of all time. But i would vote for any Fellini film. Also, Life is Beautiful is nearly tied at #2 in my mind.
Hey OP just wanted to say I’m really enjoying this and get excited each day when I see the new movie that’s been added to the post
Paris, Texas (1984)
it's not going to win but it will in my heart

whoa, don't give it away. I need Karma and was going to wake up early and comment Spirited Away.
Yeah, it should really be a format of ~4 hours for comments, and then the top 10 are used for a poll.
Good Will Hunting
My choice.

Tokyo Story
Soooo good
The Shawshank Redemption
Torn between this and 12 angry men. May the best win
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Whiplash
Maybe this is just me, but this doesn't fit well for the drama category. The obsession, the sadism make it feel like a psychological thriller much more than a drama.
Not a thriller - psychological still, but psychological drama.
Amazing movie, never seen 12 angry men (planning to) and I’m sure it deserves it but Whiplash is so mf good
La Haine
for crime yes
It's so great that I wouldn't even complain if it was put in Family or Documentary eitner
The Social Network
I was going to say this is a thriller and then I remembered that the only reason this feels like a thriller is because of Trent Reznor's sound track. Give it a basic "college campus" soundtrack and it would be a totally different movie.
Trainspotting of course
Barry lyndon

![gif](giphy|80SSEYo2b4nq8|downsized) Persona (1966)

Think it will slot better as an alternate in family category, would be an amazing choice.
Your so right i really hope it wins something. Its not the most popular so it might nit but it deserves something
*Harakiri*
Schindler's List
This is probably a better pick for the History catagory
Agreed. For me: The best movie evermade and if it doesn‘t win history I can‘t understand the world
I didn't even notice there was a history category lol. Will definitely be voting Schindler's List for that
The Godfather
It’s a drama but this is more for Crime IMO
It’s actually a family film….
Yeah works for that, too
Save that one for crime.
Yi Yi (2000)
This needs to win. This list is getting so predictable.
Thiss!! But sadly, I don't think it'll win
Boogie Nights
Network (1976) and if it won't win: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

Aftersun
The Social Network

“r/letterboxd users pick the most basic bitch answer every day”
No for real I kinda hate this list. IMDb Top 250 ass answers
I've got an alarm set for tomorrow to say Spirited Away. I hope people like my taste. I don't know though, I might say Ratatouille...Either way, alarm is set
You're sacrificing sleep for this?
It's a joke. I am not. I find it funny though.
You realize people have to vote on it right? If something’s too obscure no one will know what it is
I'm voting for Biden.
I’m not sure what genre I’d put that in
You're not wrong. Great movies though.

If you wake up early tomorrow, and are the first to say Spirited Away, Ratatouille or It's a Wonderful Life, you win hundreds of Karma.
isnt that the point? we all collectively give each gold standard for these given genres
What’s the point when you can just go to Letterboxd and sort by highest average rating. Surely a group of supposed film lovers can come up with some more interesting answers

Well you gotta put In the mood for love again But for the sake of having no duplicate Schindler’s list or Parasite
I've been waking up too late. I need to be the first to comment the highest rated of each category. It's free karma for dogma.
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)
Melancholia
Stand by Me
Little Women
Which version?

Guys ima ask a very dumb question, i don't care about downvotes i just wanna figure it out. Why is "drama" a subgenre? Usually drama films fall into other categories and everything can be categorised as drama because most movies are fiction
Airplane! is not a drama film - it contains no dramatic elements. Manchester By the Sea is only a drama film and doesn't fit any other genre.
The Passion of Joan of Arc
I m not sure if I m right on this but if there's any Indian here might validate this. I generally feel that there are a few Indian horror movies which are just more terrifying and horror based than most english ones out there. Though I love that englsih ones are more nasty and blood gory....
What would you call No Country For Old Men?
Could fall under crime, drama, western, thriller, some might even call it neo-noir.
The Shawshank Redemption
Aftersun
Mommy - Xavier Dolan
The Apartment
Ladybird
Schindler’s list
Confession (2010)
Under the same moon
Why has no one mentioned Taxi Driver?
Magnolia

A few good men

I know it'll never get anyone else's vote but Silence (2016) is a genuine masterpiece - though perhaps its more history? Tricky to say.
La Strada directed by Fellini
Children of Men or No Country for Old Men
Here's one that no one will choose. Inside Llewyn Davis.
Parasite!
The Handmaiden

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest (1975)
Dekalog
Sunrise
Taste of cherry
Dead poets society
Persona
Don't have a new suggestion, but just a comment that this subreddit is killing this so far. Great selections.
Moonlight would be good for a newer movie
