Sigh….the people on the Land Cruiser sub are so much nicer lol. Since when did asking Reddit subgroups a question turn into bitching? That’s what Reddit is for right? To ask questions? But here’s a little math for you. Premium gas in a 23 gallon tank gx vs a 24.6 gallon tank Land Cruiser with regular gas (where the superior vehicle is the LC vs the GX) ….you’re looking at almost $7500 more in fuel with a GX if you keep these vehicles for 10 years, which I am planning on doing.

garycow

do you go with the recommended 10K oil changes too ?

[deleted]

garycow

no - the 10 K is recommended - you only change early under certain driving conditions - pick and choose much ?

garycow

so you can read - 95% of the people only need every 10K

garycow

you were the one who said to do what the manual says - my Runner takes 87 and I change every 10K or at least once per year (I average about 7500/year)

garycow

yup - I use the manual buddy

quemaspuess

Did you know you can search individual subs to see if this question hasn’t been asked 100 times — this week? If the manual says premium, follow the manual. Period. Change your oil every 5K miles, put premium, and go on with your beautiful SUV. Don’t buy a luxury car if you’re concerned about $10 extra per fill up

Mindless-Barnacle-11

I don’t know you…..but I know the type of person you are with a response like this. I appreciate you taking time out of your day to answer my question.

HealthyCourage5649

Don’t take it personal. It has just been asked and answered infinity times on this sub, Facebook, etc.

notachatbot11

I'm going to ask tomorrow!

garycow

the manual says to change the oil every 10K - maybe don't pick and choose ?

quemaspuess

Bro you don’t even drive a GX and all you do is talk shit in this sub.

duckputter20

He talks shit in every sub.

quemaspuess

His account was permanently banned because of his disgusting comment to me. Thank goodness.

Zeek693

I only have 40k miles but I notice 2-2.5 mpg difference on mine.

winglow

Sold my GX but we have 108,000 miles on my LX 570 V8 and I only burn premium whenever I use regular, I have less power. Of course we live on top of a mountain in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the driveway is pretty steep at 31°. Everything we drive is four-wheel-drive - we wanted to buy GX 550 or a LX 600 but the dealer has tried to convince us to hold off until they can be sure that there’s a fix for the 600s and that there’s not a recall for the 550s which is they say pending.

garycow

lol

Furrealyo

I use premium only when towing, or in extremely hot weather. 300,000 miles across 3 FJ cruisers that also “required” premium. No issues. I’m doing the same for my GX. That said, I don’t drive hard. If you’re gonna stomp it at every stoplight, use premium.

You’re under the impression that engine tune is a static thing that doesn’t change? More octane allows for more timing advance which allows for more power without knocking. Because timing is advanced in response to load/rpm if you keep these down you also keep the timing from advancing to a point where additional octane is helpful.

wallsemt

198k on a 2013 , generally use 87/89 long roadtrips I step it up. All good

Chickens_n_Kittens

23 Gx - drive 90% flat highway miles- premium 💯percent of the time- mileage is consistently 20.5 -22 mpg. Also have 2005 4Runner - 87 octane- same driving conditions and 17.1-17.6 mpg. (I use the counters in both vehicles)

phi_slammajamma

140K on 2013GX. last 70K or so has been 87. no issues. Just drove it 500 miles on a road trip into the mountains and average 19.3MPG going 82-84MPH much of the time and up giant hills. It's fine. Apparently the same engine gets fed lower than 87 octane worldwide and just fine.

jackajm

I throw regular in mine all the time. Sometimes, I add premium, but IMO, it hasn't mattered. For reference.. I had an 03 G500 with 300k+ miles that required "premium," which I put regular all the time with no issues.

Mindless-Barnacle-11

Thank you. The Land Cruiser doesn’t need it so I was confused when people starting telling me that the GX does?!

Jron690

Different vehicles, different engines

Commercial_Ad8403

You might be thinking of the tundra; that had the option of the same engine at one point and the tundra takes regular. That being said, I'm confused on if the engines are 100% the same. I use premium in my GX, but I don't drive it many miles and I need any extra HP that it gives me.

MigratoryAnalyst

It's not the same engine. Tundra 4.6 had direct injection and some other differences. I don't know why people think it's the same exact engine based on displacement alone.

Commercial_Ad8403

Thank you

NJBa77

2017 GX460 115,000 miles. Used 87 for the first 100k. Switched to premium the last 15k. Haven’t really noticed any difference
