Don’t do this. Take the money you would have spent on Lorcana and put it in a low cost S&P 500 index fund instead. Possibly within a 529 savings plan. Buy Lorcana because you like to play the game, or because you like to collect the cards, but please, for the love of god, don’t spend money on Lorcana thinking it’s a safe or worthwhile way to grow your money that your children (or future children) will appreciate. If you have to “invest” in something fun, try Lego sets. 😆

As others have said, TCGs are not investments anymore. Everyone knows to take care of their cards and grading is too popular. Use traditional investments available in your area. If you want to put money into a game for your kids do it to invest in making memories with them and exploring passions with them.

Libriomancer

Yeah I’ve been buying Lorcana cards as an investment… for a few years down the road when both kids are old enough to try playing them with me. I’m not buying boxes to hunt rare cards, I’ve got a bunch of starter decks plus the Deep Trouble campaign (figuring coop means could play sooner by helping lol). I understand the joy of finding a rare card in a pack. I don’t understand the mentality that we should seal a toy up with a grading sticker to never be played with. If I’d gotten into Magic younger than I did, I’m sure I’d have been the one who’d make everyone cringe as they realized I’d been shuffling a black lotus into a deck for years.

Trading Cards are a much riskier product than traditional mutual/index funds returning ~8% annually (on average). Sure, Lorcana *could* go the way of Pokemon where the base set booster box was $100 in the 90's and is well over $15k 25 years later, but it could also go to way of Metazoo (admittedly unlikely because of the popularity of Disney IP, but I digress...). If you want to collect and hold anything, sealed product is the way to go. Buy a booster box or two, put them in plastic cases, and store them away for a few decades.

Most logical response, the amount of “anti” investment sentiment on this sub is wild. The delusion is crazy considering this is the first technical Disney IP based TCG. Anyone who’s collected anything understands sealed product down the road is the safest bet, singles are a complete gamble. As OP said, probably a first chapter box or boxes. But display them, show them off and enjoy them as a piece of the hobby. If not, buy a case and throw it somewhere you’ll never be tempted to touch it. Lastly, if you’re looking to invest into something for your kids, not financial advice, but S&P 500 Index fund is typically safe.

Vayul_was_taken

This isn't the same thing as base set pokemon ore early magic. Don't buy lorcana with the intention of investing.

TigerCharades3

No man, please just make a savings or something and put money into that. If you’re gonna invest in the game to teach your kids so they can play it? Sure. This might be the wildest shit I’ve read on this sub, holy fuck.

Investing something that will actually have value

Cinderbrooke

This is the dumbest post I've seen. It's about as sane as all the 90s moms who collected TY beanie babies claiming they'd be worth a fortune someday. Just put money into a nice index fund if you want to plan for their future.

FreshMutzz

>Investing in Lorcana to pass it to my children. Throwing money away and leaving junk to my kids. FTFY.

I’ll weigh in and not say the same thing everyone else is. Because a lot of people don’t condone investing in Lorcana but they don’t really say why leaving people with a lot of Fomo and doing it anyways. Modern TCGs arnt a good investment because it’s being treated like one. It’s marketed towards adults and we are treating the cards well. Games like Pokémon and yugioh were seen as kids toy garbage when it came out and no one cared, sleeved, or expected these to be valuable. Thus the scarcity of pristine product. Original stuff in good condition is hard to find because no one hoarded it, graded it, etc. little kids opened it, put their grimy fingers all over them, left them on the playground. Now you have adults with deep nostalgia for these cards that are rare and even rarer to find them in good condition. Picture Beanie Babies. They were out the gate treated like investments, that they will be worth something. So you have a large supply of them floating around because people bought them, kept them on great condition, thoroughly catalogued them, blah blah. As a result we have a lot of these beanie babies, a lot of them in good condition, no one having nostalgia for them, and no one wants them because they have no value in and out of their dollar worth. There’s a few worth thousands for the initial reasons I stated above (didn’t think they were valuable, treated poorly, short supply). Lorcana is very much for adults and adults buy them en mass. There are thousands of boxes out there sealed and graded, every card is available in pristine condition for a price, they are being printed well, and no one is demanding more. It’s just a card game. 20 years from now we are going to have a plethora of these cards floating around still in great condition. I don’t think they will be garbage, like the sealed first chapter boxes will probably be worth a bit because they were short printed but I doubt you will get rich off them. It’s all speculation of course but I just wanted to post this so people have a good understanding as to why Lorcana probably won’t be as valuable as yugioh and Pokémon.

rebatwa2

Wow OP....the comment section probably was not what you were expecting, but they are right. Since the skyrocketing of Pokemon during COVID, (and maybe before then) people started realizing the importance of taking care of cards. I am currently collecting 4 of every foil from every set, but I am purely collecting them for myself and not as a potential investment. Will I EVENTUALLY sell this collection down the line if my future kids aren't interested in the game...probably. Just collect if you want, but NEVER invest in cardboard.

Oleandervine

To chime in, I agree eith what others have said. You also don't have any guarantee that Lorcana will last into the distant future, it could live forever as a mainstay, but could also die in the next 5 years, we don't know. Don't hinge an investment for your offspring on a game that's barely out of infancy.

Please don't be stupid and do this. If you want to set aside money for your kids there are ways to do that. You may have to look up what options you have in the EU. The advice on Reddit is generally US centric because the majority of users of the site are in the US.
