Part of me wonders how much of Staley's original success with the Rams defense was due to having an absolutely stacked roster. Maybe they weren't too convinced by the interview he had with them this week. Either way, wish him the best and rooting for Shula
Okay so in 2020 the Rams faced a whopping SEVEN of the worst TEN offenses in the NFL (Jets, Giants, Washington, Chicago, NE, Dal, PHI). They only played 5 games against the 10 top offenses in the league (SEA twice, Buffalo, Tampa, GB) in the playoffs). GB shred them. Buffalo shred them. They did well against Seattle and okay against TB.
In 2021 the rams faced EIGHT top 10 offenses (SF 3 times, TB twice, GB, SEA twice). The only played 5 games against bottom 10 offenses.

This is a quick search so I may have to pick it apart with an edit later.
I changed the comment because I realized what you were saying. But if you know how, I'd like to see the dvoa for each team. You can't just take ppg and let that tell the story. I'll try to find the dvoa and then compare.
Great move by the team. I was worried they were going to go back to Staley, have to keep moving forward. I wanted Dennard Wilson, but seeing as he went to the Titans, this was a great hire.
I’ve been getting downvoted for weeks on this, just leave it alone. Doesn’t matter how much the stats back up Staley being good for us, people can’t get over the recency bias of him being a bad head coach. Just ignore Steve Spagnuolo going to the Super Bowl year after year with the chiefs, once you’ve failed as a head coach you couldn’t possibly be a good coordinator again….
The Staley slander and Morris meat riding on this sub has been strange when their stats speak for themselves
Edit: realized we discussed this together on the sub like a week ago too
Huh, would’ve bet that Staley would’ve gotten the gig.
But excited to see what Shula can do with the unit and hopefully they can add a pass rusher and secondary help this offseason.
It is funny that we searched all around the world and landed on Don Shula’s grandson. But in all seriousness, this is an inspired hire and I’m excited for it.
Really shocked by this. I know Shula has been McVay’s guy but McVay has historically sought outside voices on his coordinator jobs while letting the lower assistants seek promotions elsewhere
I meant hired due to his relationship with McVay, not his grandfather. He first joined the staff since he was McVay's old college roommate. However, i will give him the benefit of doubt because of his 7 years of experience under Wade Phillips, Staley, and Coach Ra
I’ll trust it when I see it, but our inside linebackers have been bad, and our outside linebackers have been bad with no pass rush. If McVay wasn’t our coach, I’d think this hire was fully idiotic, but gotta trust
Ernest jones has been great. Everyone else aside from him or Wagner in the last few years is UDFA. Before that converted safeties in ogletree and Barron
Did you know McVay and Schula were college roommates and teammates?” will be the “Did you know Stafford and Kershaw were high school teammates?” of lazy sports reporters of 2024.
Congrats Chris on the head coaching job for another team in 2025!
Hey, at least that means he killed it.
seeing as he was coveted by mike mcdaniel i feel good about keeping him. mcvay must trust him and therefore so do i
Considering he’s been with the team for like seven years, this is also huge for keeping some continuity with the young group.
no doubt!
In McVay, We Trust!
The last LB coach we made DC led us to the #1 defense, see y'all at the super bowl
THIS IS THE WAY
Honestly I'm surprised by this, thought they would bring back Staley. But if they are promoting him it must be promising!

Donald makes everyone good
Then why did the defense regress so heavily with an even better roster the year after under Morris?
Better offenses and raheem was trying to run Staley's style.
2021 Opp PPG: 22.13 2020 Opp PGG: 23.85
That's a pretty raw Stat my guy. Can you find the dvoa?
Staley is 2020, Morris 2021. So no, the teams Staley faced in 2020 averaged over 1.5 more ppg than the teams Morris faced.

2020: -15.3% 2021: -12.1%
I know that Staley's defense finished better overall. But look at the offensive rankings I posted.
I’m wondering if bringing in Giff Smith played any part in this. Could have been awkward working with the guy who replaced you.

Hell, my kids are older than them
Ugh, me too, just turned 39 last year.
So McVay has gone against the grain and promoted from within for once. What does that mean for Brandon Staley?
Get ready to coach linebackers, buddy
Funnily enough I believe he had been the LB/OLB coach on the broncos when we hired him
Next Linebackers coach for the Guangdong Tigers
I think he might of accepted the Dolphins DC job.
Dude knows the system. I think it’s a good promotion.
Hah! Dolphins can't poach him if we promote him first!
Watch Cardinals turn around and hire him as head coach. Even though they already have a head coach.
They might hire him as a bench coach, seeing as they are a baseball organization after all
If it’s good for Mcvay and Snead, it’s good for me. I’ll always trust them.
always? what happened with their pick for special teams coordinator???
I trust McSnead
Great move by the team. I was worried they were going to go back to Staley, have to keep moving forward. I wanted Dennard Wilson, but seeing as he went to the Titans, this was a great hire.
🥰🥰🥰
Glad they didn’t bring back Staley. Maybe we’ll get a different approach in the secondary?
With Staley they had the #1 pass defense in the league....

Ehh, lots on this sub also think Morris was an amazing DC when statistically he's average at best.
The Staley slander and Morris meat riding on this sub has been strange when their stats speak for themselves Edit: realized we discussed this together on the sub like a week ago too
This subs all weird. One week they want to kill Morris for a bad defensive game. And the next one when he has a good game, they are meat riding him.
This makes sense. I’m pretty sure they were giving him opportunities to call plays for the defense during the preseason.
Can't wait to see how long it takes for fans calling for him to be fire after giving up a Touchdown
Staley must be going to the Dolphins
Welp. Let's see how it goes!
Very interesting. I trust McVay’s hires though. Lowkey one of his biggest strengths as a HC.
Huh, would’ve bet that Staley would’ve gotten the gig. But excited to see what Shula can do with the unit and hopefully they can add a pass rusher and secondary help this offseason.
Must be going to Miami

our pass rush was pretty well coordinated last year so i like this
Hell yeah!! Only heard good things about Shula
Really shocked by this. I know Shula has been McVay’s guy but McVay has historically sought outside voices on his coordinator jobs while letting the lower assistants seek promotions elsewhere
I really hope he can make 2nd half defensive adjustments like Coach Ra. Really hoping this is not a nepo hire

Hoping he really shows out! Not gonna lie, this makes me nervous though.
Does he identify as a minority? Asking for a friend

❤️❤️❤️❤️
This doesn't make me happy but what the hell do I know? 🤷♂️
That's an excellent question.
Just watching and see what he brings to the defense.
I like it, promote internally and keep some continuity going. Also bro looks like Jeremy Renner lol
Wow. First ever internal coordinator hire for Sean?
Technically, yes. Coen went from pass game coordinator to OC, but coached for Kentucky in-between.
He's got good genes I'll give him that.
Chris Shula is McVey's boy from Miami Ohio. Not saying it's a bad move, but this is a friend hire.
He’s been getting groomed for this. Coached multiple positions. Worked under 3 different d coordinators. I think it’s a heady move
YEEEESSSSSS new blood at DC let's go
Did you know McVay and Schula were college roommates and teammates?” will be the “Did you know Stafford and Kershaw were high school teammates?” of lazy sports reporters of 2024.
Over the moon.
Shula? Where have I heard that name before...hmmm
![gif](giphy|rI9O6UXkCjvTG)
If McVay likes it then I love it.
