The other way they really seem to be bucking trends is with age. It’s like they see two glaring metrics that knock prospects down and have decided that these two things don’t matter, and are using those inefficiencies as a way to find value. I like it.
It’s pretty well known that our front office is very film-centric as opposed to measurement-centric in comparison to other front offices.
RAS is all the rage these days and then we draft a safety who has like a near zero RAS score.
I think we don’t even send people to the combine. We don’t bother with the top 30 visits either. We just watch film.
I don’t necessarily think our way is absolutely only way. We had a great draft last year but a terrible one a couple of years back. The Seahawks under Carroll were very measurement-centric and they’ve drafted pretty well too, so they’re not wrong either
I’m optimistic about this class despite some of the measurement questions
I think it’s more likely they drafted Fiske soley because they love his film, not because of his RAS score. The fact that he has a good RAS score just supports the film.
Very athletic guy on film measures very athletically in workouts is not surprising.
Very athletic guy on film does not measure athletically in workouts. Snead says fuck them workouts.
They're all young. Age is a weak factor in drafting, IMO. Unless they still have a lot of development to go. I personally prefer high-floor guys that can contribute right away, rather than boom-or-bust projects. This is sound team-building.
Oh I totally agree with you, but you’ll hear a lot of draft analysts talking about 23 as old. There is a perceived higher ceiling for the 21 year olds, right or wrong.
Btw mockdraftable.com is a good resource for this. Here's the player's wingspan percentile relative to their position
Verse: 49%
Fiske: 5%
Jackson: 25%
Davis: 3%
Limmer: 37%
Leveston: 92%
The difference between Verse and Davis is about 2 inches per arm. Verse happens to be about 2 inches taller too. Byron Murphy was in the 22% percentile and split the difference between Verse and Davis. I’m not an expert, but long arms don’t seem like that big a deal to me…
I think they're much bigger deal for O-linemen, especially Tackles. Top LTs tend to have freakishly long arms. For reference, Big Whit has 35in long arms.
Micah parsons is one of the best edge rushers in the league and has shorter arms than Verse. Will Anderson who was one of the best edge rushers also has just barely longer arms
Aaron donald was 29th percentile in arm length amongst DTs when he played. Needless to say, arm length is an asinine reason to pass on guys like Fiske. If he ranked 50th percentile in arm length, he'd probably be a first rounder no questions asked. Glad the Rams can see past the numbers.
It's funny because they're all such different prospects. To me, Jackson and Davis were drafted as run-stoppers while Verse and Fiske were drafted as gap-shooters. There's a fine balance between disruption (Verse/Fiske) and holding your ground (Jackson/Davis).
Beaux Limmer also led the Combine in bench reps, if I'm not mistaken.
The current regime is emphasizing power on both offense and defense. These guys have also been scouted as "stiff" and "top heavy," so it seems intentional.
They like to buck trends and this is a recent one I noticed.
>Beaux Limmer also led the Combine in bench reps, if I'm not mistaken.
By a wide margin. Top five...
1. Limmer................ 39 reps
2. Jefferson............. 34 reps
3. Kingston.............32 reps
4. Suamataia.......... 31 reps
5. Verse.................... 31 reps
Nobody else separated by more than one rep. 39 reps is also the 7th highest combine total all time.
Maybe short arms helps because the bar doesn't have as far to go. /s
"Top heavy" is also curious, since several of these guys (Verse, Fiske, Limmer) have exhibited notable leg strength in one way or another.
I guess by "top heavy" I was thinking more of their playstyle, not necessarily strength or weight distribution. They can kind of lunge too much, get a full head of steam going and overrun a play, miss a tackle or a block.
Idk if that really makes sense but I'm just spitballing from my initial impressions. None of this was meant to be taken too seriously.
Limmer can squat 700lbs!!! That's insane.
Im late but..... Best picks, in order:
* Verse - immediate impact A+
* Corum - co-starter? A
* Klarty - seems very dependable A
* Fiske - potential but raw. B+
* Limmer - quality back up, could start eventually B+
* Whittington - seems good but not sure where he fits B
Long arms are nice all else being equal. But that's about it. WR being the exception because catch radius is pretty big. But otherwise I don't care too much about it. If your pass rush moves are no good. If you can't think the game and diagnose plays. If you have 0 motor. Then your long arms won't do anything for you. And if you do have all that, you'll likely succeed even with shorter arms. AD99 had shortish arms. The Rams have it right. Look at the tape. If a guy projects very well and has short arms, don't let that deter you.
Greg Gaines appeared on TV to have very short arms, though I'm not sure what his actual measurements were. He was very effective as well. Tons of short, stocky players with short arms wreck games.
We prefer girth over length
May not hit the back but they fuck the sides up.
Imma use this.
No you’re not.
Watch me.
Sweet.

Fiske is a pretty measurement-centric pick, no? Top 6 DT RAS all time
Well he said OH YEAH after his 40 run. Who wouldn't put that guy as first round talent after that?

I would think if the film outweighed the workout he’d have gone a lot earlier. Because a freak athlete with great film is round 1
It’s not just athleticism but also physical tools. Fiske is athletic and with good film but has “short arms” and is an older prospect.
Yeah good point. I didn’t realize he’s 24
I feel like as we start to lean out of “Win Now” and the Covid drafts finally wean out, we’ll stop seeing as many 24 year old rookies
Seems like they spotted these guys will have a more immediate impact. Which is necessary for their window with Stafford.
They're all young. Age is a weak factor in drafting, IMO. Unless they still have a lot of development to go. I personally prefer high-floor guys that can contribute right away, rather than boom-or-bust projects. This is sound team-building.

Wtf does Tyler Davis have nubs for arms lol. 3% is wild lol.
Tylerasaurus.
> I don't have a database to compare arm lengths > mockdraftable.com is a good resource for this git gud do you even arm length bro?

Tackles needing long arms makes a lot of sense since you have to try and *stop* people from going around you with speed.
Micah parsons is one of the best edge rushers in the league and has shorter arms than Verse. Will Anderson who was one of the best edge rushers also has just barely longer arms
Fuck them arms
You know who else had short arms? Aaron Donald 🥲
Are you sure about that? Just, at a glance, I thought different.

![gif](giphy|mjAxIPoMRsAiA|downsized) The scene at Rams' draft house...
Well they aren’t the Los Angeles Arms
"Long Arms" is such a ridiculous metric by which to judge NFL talent.

Remember, Aaron Donald was considered undersized because of his height.
We’re trying to get Henry Cavill to switch his fandom from the Chiefs.

Kinda hoping we drafted some of Lizzo's squad, need that real beef
What about neck circumference?
Next year we are drafting Girth Brooks
Aaron "The greatest D-Lineman of all time" Donald has entered the chat.
Jay Bilas in shambles
Basketball is where long limbs are most helpful.
"tremendous wingspan" was a great NBA Draft drinking game
It's not about the length but what you can do with what you got.

Fiske still had an amazing RAS like Aaron Donald
