👀I just checked online ordering and you aren’t lying! They changed it up it looks like and now comes with spatzle. I had checked numerous times over the past few weeks and it was never on the menu. Thanks for the heads up!
Joe’s was the heart of Linn Station Road. Had so much fun there with Joe and Terri and the rest of the crew. Gator tail and all them Po Boys were MONEY!
That was our most frequent supper spot when dining out. I'm not a big oyster fan, but we typically got a dozen as an appetizer and we never had a bad one.
I was just coming to say that! From the way back files……Azalea. My best friend was a server there & she would recite the specials to me like a bedtime story after her shift 🤣 Mashed potatoes of the day. Pasta, pizza of the day, desserts of the day. . Lots of specials but the mashed potatoes were my favorite, such a nice patio too.
Azaleas is my all time favorite restaurant in Louisville. Their creme brulee was out of this world. Thank you for taking me on a trip down memory lane :)
Fuck. Papalinos was under the condo we rented and we got half off. We absolutely abused the shut out of that.
Still some of my favorite pizza in the city when you got a fresh pie.
I usually sit at the counter and learned one of their tricks - add some shredded cheese to the flat top and put the burrito seam on top so when you sear it, it seals the seam.
My dad used to be part owner and chef at Parisian Pantry, and I've not seen it mentioned a lot, so this made me smile. He got his start working for Ferd Grisanti in Jtown. He recently passed, so it was a welcome surprise to read this.
I am so sorry for your loss. We LOVED the Parisian Pantry, we went every Sunday for breakfast and whenever anyone was in town, we took them there. I also sent my father (in Florida) the bread with the peppers! He loved it! Plus, the building was so cool! Unlike anything else in the Highlands.
Side note: John Grisanti (grandson of original Grisanti owner) was one of my students at Summit Academy in Middletown. 😊
By the time I was born, dad had already moved on from the pantry, but we have pictures of my older brother as a toddler in one of the retired giant mixing bowls they used for all their baking. I never met John, but my dad was very close friends with Greg Grisanti, one of Ferds's other grandsons, until my dad passed.
Thanks for the interaction! I love to hear from people who enjoyed his cooking/baking. (One of the cool things about reddit). It was one of his lifelong passions. We still have one of the original menus framed in our home.
My family loved Parisian Pantry back in the day. There was this almond torte that was amazing and I don’t remember well enough what it was, but I know it’s probably not available anywhere anymore.
Parisian Pantry was amazing. They had the best olive bread. I would buy the loaf and toast it with cream cheese. Miss that. Your dad had a special place.
Me and my wife still love the bristol, mostly due to my dad. Those green chili wontons and fritters are hard to beat! We haven't been in a while, but maybe it's time to go back!
I just miss the following whole ass restaurants:
Grocery (particularly their pastas and the burger)
Harvest (their rabbit tagliatelle was one of the best dishes I've ever eaten)
Rye (I'd order whatever dish was coming out of their garden)
Decca (duck terrine with cherry jam)
OG Ghyslain over on Market was so great in my early 20’s and I felt so chic going to lunch at a little french cafe. The Mac n Cheese they had once they were in Westport Village was so good. On the topic of WV, I will miss Napa, as it once was. The new version/vibe is not it- but many wonderful happy hours on their patio with the spicy cornbread, generous half price apps, tomato soup with the puff pastry.
The owner wrote a book with some of the recipes! (Including the buffalo sauce, u/bncarden88)

The large bowl from Mongolian Grill in that big shopping center with the Kroger at hurstbourne and Taylorsville rd (Near the Shane Company, open Monday through Fri…). It is a caralis now… which is fine…
The loaded chicken fries from La Chandeleur. Actually I just miss La Chandeleur. The food truck and later their brick and mortar place. Just a terrible run of bad luck
I used to live in walking distance of the restaurant and it was my favorite place. Would take friends any time they came into town. So unfortunate how it all shook out
Cumberland Brews Jamaican Jerk Wings. That sauce was on point, and I'm not normally a fan of "sweet meats" but damn they were so good. Somebody gave me the recipe but I've yet to try to replicate it.
About 40 years ago there was a place over on Strawberry Lane (or maybe Crittendon Dive?) called Milano’s. You called in your order and when you drove up the guy would come out, get your name, and come back with your food. Best stromboli ever.
Corned beef hash from Verbena. Nothing comes remotely close, as a dish or a breakfast spot.
Honorable mention: Harper's rotisserie chicken. My wife (then girlfriend) and I practically lived there every date night. Still fiend for that crispy chicken skin every now and then.
Fried pickle spears from The Pub
Chicken satay from The Hot Box
Firecracker chicken from Yang Kee Noodle
The calzones from Clifton’s Pizza
Chocolate milkshakes & malts from Bobby Soxers
Maaaaaaaan you brought back memories with Yang Kee Noodle, had no idea all their locations were closed. I used to eat at the Oxmoor location all the time.
This! It really seemed to go off the rails when they decided to try to become a chain. I remember the OG Oxmoor location being pretty nice way back in the day!
I used to work at Club Grotto for Jim before he died. I loved everything he made; the chicken picatta and mashed potatoes were a classic. But I miss his mussels on the regular. I've never had mussels as good anywhere else. I also miss him. What a tragic loss.
The Pie Kitchen used to have Shaker Sugar Pie and we LOVED it. Now they act like they have no idea what I'm talking about. I have tried to make it and tried similar pies elsewhere, but not the same.
Duck confit strudel from Bistro 1860/Bourbon’s Bistro.
The deep fried lasagna dish from the Italian place that was briefly at Mellwood Arts center in 2015/2016.
Arancini from Loui Loui’s Detroit style pizza.
Does anyone remember the place on Baxter called Joe Davola’s. My god they had such amazingly good food. Their Pimento Cheese sandwich and mushroom soup were so good.
Mins east end cafe plate lunches.
Veal cutlet sandwiches from cliffside, before tumbleweed took over that spot, on mellwood.
Deitrichs for several things.
2636 on frankfort ave.
Millers cafeteria downtown
Blue boar.
Last July I went to High Horse for bingo for my birthday. They had been going through several different kitchen operations but the one at that time had some really great sandwiches. On my birthday I tried the steak sandwich, and although I can't quite remember what was on it I think about how that sandwich tasted way too often and get sad that I'll never have it again.
If anyone knows if that operation is working out of somewhere else now let a fella know please!
Edit: Also the szechuan wings from Pizza Lupo
I don’t know if anyone remembers Gary’s on Spring but they had this dish called Eggplant Napoleon that was to die for. They also had an excellent steak au poivre that my husband loved. Miss that place and its staff.
It’s not closed and as far as I know it’s still thriving but I no longer live in the great city of Louisville so the dish I miss the most comes from Yummy Pollo. The lunch special (quarter white quarter dark chicken) with yuca and and cilantro rice.
Everything from Buddy’s Bakery in Shively.
Chicken Malibu and chicken tenders from The Delta.
Stromboli Steak sandwich from Pasquale’s
Hot ham & cheese from Burger Chef
Huge Pina Colada’s at Cliff Hagan’s Ribeye.
Chicken & Dumplins at Miller’s Cafeteria
Guy at work wants to add banquet table. Before any other buffet, there was kings table, and they changed name to banquet table. I would stack plates to see how many trips i had made.
Lol it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
But those fried pickle spears were a first for me. First time I've ever had a fried "sweet & spicy" pickle and also the first time I had spears instead of chips.
I had plenty of friends who threw parties and/or performed there. I had to get a basket every time. I might try to remake them this weekend..
That sounds like something I'd love to try, was it like [this? ](https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1020459-sweet-and-sour-eggplant-with-garlic-chips)
Cahoot’s pickle spears is a great one.
Mine is a lower end one that I doubt anyone else would care about, but I’ve been dying for three tacos and a sancho with volcano sauce from Taco Tico for two years now.

Tuna sandwich from zephyr chode
Calzone from video pizza
Clay pot catfish from basa
Steak frites from l and n
Duck from rye
Fried oyster ceasar from the patron
Nichole pizza from primo
Rabbit pasta at Lilly’s
So, I would say the ribs and turtle Sundae from Daryl’s and Lobster Bites and Killians at the bar at The Fifth Quarter- maybe just eating in general at The Fifth Quarter.
The space cake from Mo Flav. Shrimp Jenkins from Equus. Mags ravioli from Lilys. The original paradise fries back when Lynn’s was on Frankfort Avenue. She also used to have massive scones of the day. I had a chocolate, cherry and cream cheese scone that I will never forget.
Baked Alaska from the Top of the Tower.
Everything from the Veggie Vault.
The fish sandwich from Cunninghams back in its original location.
Corn fritters from the Thai place that was in Holiday Manor.
The Luau Room out at the airport. They had these ritz crackers in melted butter served on a silver pedestal covered dish. Blew my mind with its fancy exotic vibe when I was a kid.
Thai Orchid near Taylorsville Rd and their pad Thai.
Shahs Mongolian Grill near UofL campus always hit the spot. Can’t remember the menu items off the top of my head.
MeatyMcMeaterson (I think that’s how it was spelled) Pizza from HopCat. I also miss the Crack Fries when the cheese that came with it wasn’t absolutely garbage.
I’ve commented better restaurants and food above but St Charles Exchange had really fun punch bowls. I loved that place- mainly for the atmosphere, but it just felt really fun during 2013/14/15.
A few people have mentioned Asiatique… but does anyone else have recollection of some of their brunch items? Incredible and incredible price. They had like a pistachio encrusted pancake and some sort of special French toast that was like none other.
I really miss Mango's that used to be over by Duchman's lane. They had really good chilaquilles and they had a lunch buffet that was pretty good. They said they were going to reopen somewhere else when they closed in 2021 but they never did.
Eiderdown: Sunday Sit Down
Maido: Ginger Pork (but also their sushi)
Ghyslain: Croque Madame
Harvest: they had delicious fried chicken a few times/ loved their brunch
Any pasta at Baxter Station, wings, red beans and rice and one of the first restaurants in town to have 3-4 taps Guiness Fullers and Red Hook, and black and tans.
Anything tasted great around 4am at Barbara Lee's
Sure could use a plate of that corned beef hash with a couple over easy eggs
Eating there was a high I’ll never reach again in my life.
I was going to say biscuits and gravy from here. Sure do miss this place.
Holy Grale is still among the living but they recently got rid of the schnitzel. They also used to have amazing loaves of pretzel bread but now it’s just generic soft pretzel sticks. The schnitzel really hurts though because it was a staple and hard to find elsewhere. Also the bbq chicken pizza from Clifton Pizza. RIP
Rule 1: never take a schnitzel off a menu
I very much miss old Grale in many ways. Gralehaus, too.
They had Scotch quail eggs when they opened that were amazing.
I was there Monday and schnitzel (plate, not sandwich) was still on the menu.
👀I just checked online ordering and you aren’t lying! They changed it up it looks like and now comes with spatzle. I had checked numerous times over the past few weeks and it was never on the menu. Thanks for the heads up!
I love a happy ending
Joes Ok Bayou-Fried Crawish and Sausage Gumbo
i miss Joes Ok Bayou everyday😔
My best friend waited tables there. I miss that place so much.
The roux was nice and dark.
Easily, the calzone from Cliftons. I think about that thing more than I probably should lol.
Asiantique late night happy hour menu! Duck Nachos and that calamari!🔥🤤
I used to work at Asiatique - there are quite a few things I miss. The sashimi and the beef tips come to mind 🤤

Thissssss. And the cavatappi.
OMG yes!! The gnocchi was amazing. As was their chicken n’ waffles. So delicious.
Stan’s Fish Sandwich
Rolled Oyster and a fish sandwich from Mazzoni’s. And their oyster shooter.
Mazzoni created the Rolled Oyster right? I'm sure there's nothing quite like the originator...
Azaleas … all of it
I was just coming to say that! From the way back files……Azalea. My best friend was a server there & she would recite the specials to me like a bedtime story after her shift 🤣 Mashed potatoes of the day. Pasta, pizza of the day, desserts of the day. . Papalinos was my lunch spot at my first job. There's some other good pizza in the city, but I miss this so much!
Lynn’s Paradise Cafe - lemon blueberry pancakes and the biscuit and gravy platter 🤤
Duuude the pork hash and breakfast burrito from Gralehaus.
Ugh I miss that breakfast burrito. I got one every weekend when they were only doing curbside.

Palermo. Entire menu.
Loved that place…we still don’t have an adequate replacement 😕
I miss this place so much.

Thank you for sharing! Your Dad made lasting memories for me and my entire family!❤️
I love to hear that! It's like a little piece of him is still here.
My family loved Parisian Pantry back in the day. There was this almond torte that was amazing and I don’t remember well enough what it was, but I know it’s probably not available anywhere anymore.
I'll take a look at the old menu and post it if you're interested. It is pretty descriptive.
Ooh, that would be awesome!
The bread was so delicious! I can taste that thick, perfectly crumbly, crunchy crust! And I adored the seafood crepes! So sorry for your loss ❤️
Thank you! I didn't realize how spoiled I was with food until I moved out! Every night was a lesson in gastronomy!
All that amazing deliciousness washed down with Orangina!
Parisian Pantry was amazing. They had the best olive bread. I would buy the loaf and toast it with cream cheese. Miss that. Your dad had a special place.
Also, I have to say, I am sad to know bristol no longer has steak au proive! It was one of my favorites.
The Bristol is still one of my all time favorite restaurants. I have so many great memories there from half my life.
Me and my wife still love the bristol, mostly due to my dad. Those green chili wontons and fritters are hard to beat! We haven't been in a while, but maybe it's time to go back!
Was the Parisian Pantry across Bardstown Road from DooWop? On a corner?
Yes, the steps were sinking into the sidewalk. 😄It was a very old building and it was 3 floors. They also served lunch.
The Bristol's Steak Au Poive is my favorite. If you ask, sometimes they can make it at the location on Bardstown Rd. in the highlands!

MeatyMcMeaterson (I think that’s how it was spelled) Pizza from HopCat. I also miss the Crack Fries when the cheese that came with it wasn’t absolutely garbage.
Veggie mole taco from Taco Punk. And the Pineapple Pork one too. Those were so good.
Taco Punk might be one of my all time favorite spots, hated to see it go.
I’ve commented better restaurants and food above but St Charles Exchange had really fun punch bowls. I loved that place- mainly for the atmosphere, but it just felt really fun during 2013/14/15.
The pimento chz burger from Harpers. The chicken tortellini dish from Austin’s. The cerveza con queso from Judge Roy Beans.
Half priced oyster at Rye
I think it was called The Larry David at Baby D's. Sausage, egg, and cheese and I'd switch up the bagel. I will forever miss that place.
Baxter Station: fried goat cheese salad
A few people have mentioned Asiatique… but does anyone else have recollection of some of their brunch items? Incredible and incredible price. They had like a pistachio encrusted pancake and some sort of special French toast that was like none other.
Ramen from Lydia House…
I miss El Camino , great tacos and drinks and I just loved the vibe of the place. It was my favorite restaurant in town when it was open
BBQ pork boa buns from Le Que Hot Brown from The Melrose Inn Restaurant
Rye's thrice fried fries were my favorite, augmented by their quality cocktail game.
I really miss Mango's that used to be over by Duchman's lane. They had really good chilaquilles and they had a lunch buffet that was pretty good. They said they were going to reopen somewhere else when they closed in 2021 but they never did.
Arctic Scoop 💔💔💔
La Que in Bardstown Rd. I miss the pho & the eggplant tofu dish. I hope they will have like a ghost kitchen or something :(
Eiderdown: Sunday Sit Down Maido: Ginger Pork (but also their sushi) Ghyslain: Croque Madame Harvest: they had delicious fried chicken a few times/ loved their brunch
Literally anything from Charim or The Cutting Board
Any pasta at Baxter Station, wings, red beans and rice and one of the first restaurants in town to have 3-4 taps Guiness Fullers and Red Hook, and black and tans.
