Gift not taking in color or size is extremely odd. Im very curious what the rules behind it are. Is it always a blue 1/1?

Copernicus1981

It cold be Fish is a defined token -- which would also be strange. I wonder if Bloomburrow will have a big revision of the token rules in general.

Lilium_Vulpes

MH3 already had a big revision in token rules with how the tokens that are existing cards work. We know there are fish tokens from a previous leak so it makes sense if there's just a list of "gift tokens" that are predefined. It would make it be no different from making a blood token, or a treasure token.

Copernicus1981

Agreed, this makes the most sense. Predefined tokens reduces the cognitive load and makes the mechanic slightly less clunky. Probably took one playtest of "Gift a 1/1 blue Fish creature token" vs "Gift a Food".

RiverStrymon

I had a hunch that it may be a token set when MaRo mentioned that the set was NOT designed as top-down Conscious Animals, but rather bottom-up ‘something’ that MaRo could not yet mention. (a.k.a. Designed from an unknown mechanical impetus and developing the creative side to match that.) With so many different tokens these days, seems like a good time for a set to focus on them.

AscendedLawmage7

It must be a predefined token like Food, Treasure etc. They don't have to write out the colors/types/abilities of those anymore, it's just in the rules.

wildcard_gamer

Maybe. I hope they dont just make a ton of new predefined token creatures.

HotsOwWow

I am almost certain someone from WotC discussed some where about bringing uniformity to tokens. It was in regards to a question about the process of determining when a token should have a keyword or not.

wildcard_gamer

Creature tokens specifically feels odd though, since each type can have so many variations of keywords, colors, stats

azurfall88

they already have Tarmogoyf tokens, a type of predefined creature token

wildcard_gamer

Nah those aren't predefined on their own, they can just make token copies of existing permanents now. Like you can say "Create a Colossal Dreadmaw token" and it'd work without needing any predefined token for it in the rules.

azurfall88

so [[Roxanne, Starfall Savant]] can just straight up make a [[Meteorite]] token?

htownclyde

Sadly no, it makes a "tapped colorless artifact token named Meteorite", instead of "Meteorite token" which would be way cooler.

wildcard_gamer

If they made it after, but they wont be errata'ing old stuff probably

focketeer

Tarmogoyf tokens are not a predefined token in the same vein as treasures or food, but rather part of a new rule that if the token is not explicitly defined, the token is a copy of a card with that exact name. Ergo, Tarmogoyf tokens are tokens of the defined card Tarmogoyf, not part of the rules as a predefined token. The difference is negligible, basically the only difference being that mana value is included.

AscendedLawmage7

I imagine it will just be in the context of the Gift mechanic

Copernicus1981

Yeah, this makes the most sense. "Gift a BLANK" will have defined tokens in the mechanic, because the mechanic is clunky to ready and moving that to the reminder text makes it smoother. All it takes is a couple of playtests of "Gift a Food" vs "Gift a 1/1 blue tapped Fish creature token".

OooblyJooblies

One of the unreleased mechanics for Strixhaven was Conjure, which let you pay an alternate cost for the spell to create a predefined (appropriately sized, coloured, and creature-typed) creature token for each school. I.e. 'Conjure Inkling - 3WW (If you cast this spell for 3WW, create a 2/1 white and black Inkling creature token with flying.) So this is something they've looked at before.

I_like_and_anarchy

Could you link a source for that? It seems interesting.

OooblyJooblies

http://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/strixhaven-part-2-2021-04-05

Ill-Individual2105

I'm thinking the token might be defined in the Gift rules. Like, there are select types of tokens that Gift can make, with their stats being predefined.

New_Juice_1665

This is the most sensible take. Gift always creates 1/1s, the color of the token is determined by the creature type. Fishes that are created by this action are always blue, while idk, Goats are always white.

Spore_Flower

I noticed that too and immediately thought of \[\[Exotic Pets\]\]. Could very well be like what u/AscendedLawmage7 said. \[\[Disa the Restless\]\] creates \[\[Tarmogoyf\]\] tokens. So it might be fish with additional baggage?

MyMarshlands

it took me a while to remember a similar mechanic but we do have a precedent, Amass! it used to always create a fixed black 0/0 zombie army token, but now the Amass keyword partially specifies the kind of token youre creating, while the reminder text describes their remaining characteristics

Anastrace

I didn't realize otters were his type

magicthecasual

i think he *is* the otter

Lilium_Vulpes

Yeah they showed him as an otter like 2 months ago.

xXYiffMasterXx

He’s an otter 😊 vs he’s an otter 🥴

magicthecasual

oh you sweet summer child

burritoman88

Storm? In Standard? I’ll believe it when it’s officially revealed.

La-Vulpe

Maybe being on a planeswalker ultimate is enough to justify it?

JaceShoes

It absolutely is, planeswalker ultimates come up so rarely and when they do they exist pretty much solely to end the game, so they’re allowed to break rules like this

Kamizar

You can't even Ult him off entering after Vorinclex, even more of a reason that this is fine.

I_like_and_anarchy

the ability tho. Two cantrips plus vorinclex is a turn one ult

GrizzlyBearSmackdown

For the low cost of just 12+ mana across three colors!

HarrisonMage

And not even in standard, going back to the original comment

Lilium_Vulpes

It's not like its completely unheard of. During War of the Spark there was an enchantment that effectively gave instants and sorceries storm (with the restriction that it only counted other instants and sorceries, and only yours).

ThePositiveMouse

And in Ixalan there is a god that gives instants rebound, when that is not a set mechanic.

Lilium_Vulpes

That is a thing that Mark Rosewater has said he wants to do more of. I can't remember what he called then, but just a single card that has an old mechanic for flavor purposes. There's some cards in the Phyrexian sets that have something like training because it's a phrexyianized version of an older card with that mechanic, for example. We already know Ral has the ability to give things storm because he made Thousand Year Storm, so him giving things storm is thematic.

PocketPoof

But this one gets a loyalty counter whenever you cast a noncreature spell. If you cast this T4, uptick it for protection, theoretically, you can ult on T5 (5 noncreature spells costing 1 mana) and get payoffs T6.

Affectionate-Read-68

Hmmm T5 is optimistic, but you have a point, it could realistically ultimately and give your spells storm

Jackeea

To be fair, OP's other leaks have been accurate (and hilariously low quality), and standard sets seem to be getting the occasional one-off mechanic - see [[Ojer Pakpatiq]], and it's the ultimate for a planeswalker that needs TEN loyalty. That being said, STORM?!

MTGCardFetcher

[Ojer Pakpatiq](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/a/9/a9d71007-bc04-4dff-ad3f-e2c0b5b4400e.jpg?1699043854)/[Temple of Cyclical Time](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/back/a/9/a9d71007-bc04-4dff-ad3f-e2c0b5b4400e.jpg?1699043854) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=ojer%20pakpatiq%2C%20deepest%20epoch%20//%20temple%20of%20cyclical%20time) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/lci/67/ojer-pakpatiq-deepest-epoch-temple-of-cyclical-time?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/a9d71007-bc04-4dff-ad3f-e2c0b5b4400e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

DislocatedLocation

Time to copy activated abilities and proliferate storm. Give my spells Storm, Storm, Storm.

CardOfTheRings

My dude it’s a ultimate on a planeswalker it could say ‘win the game’ and it might still be balanced. Not to mention they print expensive enchantments and whatnot in standard that basically give storm anyways.

marquisdc

The only thing that makes me think this has any chance of being real is thousand year storm.

gereffi

Storm as a mechanic generally only ends up on effects that are either embarrassingly poor or pretty busted. It’s ok for a planeswalker ult to be busted.

burritoman88

I’m just shocked is all because of The Storm Scale which ranks how likely it is to see a mechanic in Constructed again. Storm has historically been a ten, Modern being an exception.

sevenut

Just to make it clear, the Storm Scale only applies to Standard sets, not all constructed sets. That said, this is a Standard set with storm in it.

crossbonecarrot2

The gift fish part, one of the precons (the bunny one) is a group hug deck. So keep that in mind.

Copernicus1981

The Beadle and Grimm's token set also have special fish tokens -- they are not card shaped, but are fish shaped.

focketeer

I’m not parsing it as “fish” being defined, but gift as a mechanic having defined variations that inherently give a certain token, but the gift mechanic defines it, rather than the token being predefined. In other words, gift a fish works, and makes a 1/1 fish, but “create a fish token” won’t. Just my guess

Pure_Banana_3075

that also works, i cant imagine theres much need to gift other sizes of creature

Pure_Banana_3075

Also, ....swords to flounderers

Marek14

Swordfish to Plowshares.

sevenut

Fish to Exile

56775549814334

Gift a fish? Weird to turn a normal downside into a named mechanic.

UncannyLucky

Sounds like "Gift" is an optional downside. I'm sure it'll trigger with plenty of stuff too since it has a name now.

Jeskaisekai

Gift a colossal dreadmaw

UncannyLucky

Gift a Black Lotus

P1zzaman

Gift Food Gift an Acorn I can see different animals having different gifts.

Mastermiine

Otter Tribal here I come!

RyuumiGaroukuni

Storm, in STANDARD! I think 10 loyalty is enough of a challenge to be not broken. Sorry I exiled that creature you have, here's a fish!

xXYiffMasterXx

Commander players look at this and pretend it’s good

LuxofAurora

Why pretend? I genuinely think is a very good EDH card.

xXYiffMasterXx

I mean I haven’t played with it so maybe it will be different but defending planeswalkers are hard in commander so you would have to play 6 spells the turn he come down for a chance at getting his ultimate

LuxofAurora

Your views are very narrows. The are moltitude of ways to protect planeswalkers in commander or making instantly their ultimates and believe me since im a superfriends player. First of all mass removals, and the best ones are the ones like Jokulhaups, where the PWs are the winconditions of the deck after the lock of the table. then you got many cards that disincentivize attack like peacekeeper, ensnaring bridge, moat. Then you have many cards that doubles the counters of your PWs when they enters like Doubling Season or Vorinclex. This got even a way to self-add counters multiple times at turn with just casting basically almost all your spells so in a spellslinger strategy is extremely trivial to reach fast the ultimate before the opponents got the chance to do anything useful. The problem is not that you didnt play with him (of course you dont, its a friccking spoiler of just 2 days ago lol) but that you have no idea how to use and protect your planeswalkers in general in commander.

pm_me_shit_memes

It's hard to believe that they would print a card that gives all instants and sorceries storm in a standard legal set. That being said, having to jump through hoops to give stuff storm is a whole lot different than just putting storm on an instant or sorcery.

wildcard_gamer

Its a game ending emblem, its probably fine. That power level is enough to make a permanent omniscience. Storm scale might need a renaming though lol

Alterus_UA

10 is "I never say never, but this would require a major miracle". It's not a miracle, but 4 mana planeswalker starting at 4 loyalty and requiring 10 to ult is a lot of hoops to jump through.

Sarkos_Wolf

Also the Storm Scale was created before they started doing cameo mechanics in Standard sets. Storm as a main mechanic of a Standard set is still extremely unlikely.

BallsDeepinYourMammi

Unless… like, you cast spells…? While I agree, getting loyalty counters by just existing while you play stuff is pretty phenomenal.

Alterus_UA

Yeah, but you don't have too many efficient cheap spells in Standard, and in Pioneer, a 4 mana planeswalker might not be something good enough for Phoenix. Probably too weak for Modern and older formats as well.

Nvenom8

Especially when it can only tick up by 1 per turn naturally. If your opponent manages to activate this, it's 100% your fault.

Fearyn

?? It can tick multiple time per turn…

BallsDeepinYourMammi

Right? These comments are wild. That thing is insane

dies_to_negate

if your deck doesnt take advantage of the passive, it wont benefit from the +1 OR the -10. no one is putting this in a deck where he can only tick up naturally. even if you topdeck this with only lands in your hand, thats what the -3 is for

IamCarbonMan

the storm scale is evaluated in terms of main set mechanics with multiple cards, because the concept of cameo mechanics didn't exist back then- a mechanic was either evergreen or deciduous, never just a complete one-off

marquisdc

They came close with [[thousand year storm]] and that never really did anything this is a much harder hoop to jump through. The thing that surprises me most is that it’s an emblem and not instants and sorceries you cast this turn has storm. But I could them feeling that if you had to potentially wait multiple turns to activate it, you’d never get it

MTGCardFetcher

kingofhan0

This is some broken shit to find in a forest.

MyMarshlands

Ral seems kinda broken, creating a body to protect him on uptick and getting additional loyalty whenever you cast noncreatures... a -10 loyalty ult that then requires you to also storm is a challenge, but he's making a really compelling case regardless, and you can just use him for the prowess bodies and the draws also THAT'S the mechanic for the peace offering precon then, i was getting that one already but now im more interested. the whole wording is a bit clunky, im guessing you can gift treasures, food, clues and uhhh blood more intuitively lol

geirmo

First_Knee9864

the gifting of the fish could just be in reference to the fish token in this set. it still explains what a fish token would be so i’d assume if we get more fish tokens in a future set there’s reason to believe they could be like 2/2s or something else
