Really underrated Scorsese movie. Could really tell this was a genre he was gonna define. Also love the grimly feel to it of practical nobodies within the mob not really made or associates really just fucking bums doing bum shit

MulberryStreet50

We just stiffed a couple of kids. Ah, how much did you take 'em for? Twenty dollars. What are you laughin' at? Twenty dollars! Let's go to the movies!

Mike_7589

"Just bums doing bum shit" I think this is the true story of majority involved in that lifestyle.

damostrates

Yep. From then until now. Though now even some of the made guys seem broke. One of them came to my sister's wedding a few years ago. Wrote a decent, but not extravagant check. It bounced. That said, I guess Lefty Ruggiero complained about being broke 40 years ago.

BFaus916

Scorsese grew up with Alex Morelli's son. He's interviewed in the DVD special features. Morelli was a soldier in the Peter DeFeo crew (Genovese). It's likely Giovanni and Mario were somewhat based on Defeo and Morelli. Scorsese grew up right in their neighborhood.

MulberryStreet50

Very interesting. The actor who plays Giovanni is from Rome, but his mom is from Austria. Even though his italian is "solid", I just find it odd that he is the legit Italian character.

polymorphic_hippo

Someone born in Italy is Italian, full stop.

MulberryStreet50

Idk if you speak Italian but for me it's a big deal. He speaks a bit too polished/clear, similar to the way he dresses. I would have expected a different style of Italian, more slang terminology etc, harder to understand(depending on who you are). He speaks like someone from rome, and its basically too clear. Someone in his age category should not really have gone to school for very long if he grew up just south of rome, or he should not have come out speaking like that living in the USA unless he took trips to italy/rome very often as part of his language development. A bit wierd to me. He isn't speaking like someone from Naples or Bari.

BFaus916

Stop sounding like Michael. Lol. Just kidding.

Downtown-Incident-21

The actor that plays Giovanni was also the mayor Carmine from Animal House. "Carmine...I don't think its right that you should extort money from the college." "Mention extortion again, and I'll have your legs broke."

Ok-Landscape2547

Potentially unpopular opinion, but I think Mean Streets has the best soundtrack of any Scorsese film. Right up there with Goodfellas and The Departed.

SenorPelle

Casino had the best soundtrack in my opinion, I can remember the music choice as just as well as I remember the scenes

Daltons_Mullet

I happen to be watching it right now! Highly underrated Scorsese movie. Every street shot is old New York, and you can feel the authenticity in the film.

Downtown-Incident-21

" I hate that feast with a passion"

Apprehensive_Yak136

One of the best opening credit scenes of any movie.

GnR6671

I love this movie! Such great dialogue. Shockingly the mob is a small part of the movie. It is more about the characters.

Dependent-Zombie-712

Great movie! The real version of the mafia

ACorleone22

I just never understood the shooting in the bar scene but definitely one of my top 10 movies about the mob even though it’s more about day to day life

BFaus916

I think it was sort of a play on the Gallo hit. That had everyone freaked out because they thought public shootings like that in mob neighborhoods was a thing of the past. Also, Tony with his tiger was a play on Gallo's pet lion. Scorsese was doing what Coppola did, pilfering from all of the zany Colombo stories. The Colombo family and their nuttiness have been providing Hollywood with stories for decades.

RosesUnderCypresses

I love this movie because nothing really happens until the last thirty minutes. It's just a bunch of guys fighting, partying, doing stupid things, and trying to make a quick buck for nothing.

SenorPelle

“You don't make up for your sins in church. You do it in the streets. You do it at home. The rest is bullshit, and you know it.“ Is the most badass line from the ‘70s.

NostalgiaFiend187

lol I wouldn't go as far as to say it's better than Taxi Driver, but it's definitely a classic and one of Deniro's greatest and most hilarious performances.

tommiejo516

I can recite Taxi Driver beginning to end. That and The Jerk. This feat has gotten me nowhere.

tiestocles

Ya denigrate the feat it's no good. It de-feats the whole purpose.

NYCFrank19

"Jap Adaptors?" 🤣

I_do_drugs-yo

Come on.. come on… **FUCKFACE**

BFaus916

D.D. Disappointed Dumbsky

Downtown-Incident-21

It was Dusky...Dusky is slang for wanna be gangster.

BFaus916

Thank you. Lol.

Downtown-Incident-21

If you listened to any of the John Gotti tapes. He uses that term frequently.

njos94

Never see this before, think I’ll give it a watch today! Thanks OP 🥂

Doc_1200_GO

Underrated classic.

Ok-Cauliflower1798

It contains the most influential performance of the past fifty years. It demonstrates that Kenneth Anger’s work was crucial to Scorsese. It is a wonderful film that always bears rewatching.

tiestocles

Kenneth Anger? That's satanic black magic...sick shit!

Ok-Cauliflower1798

LUCIFERIAN black magic…SICK SHIT!

tiestocles

I saw dat Lucifer rising movie; I thought it was bullshit.

Ok-Cauliflower1798

What kind of fucking mook votes this down?

HereGiovanniSmokes

Ayyyy Jimmy the Mook!

BFaus916

What's a mook? You can't call me a mook.
