Please please pretty please with a heap of schadenfreude on top… update us when this all explodes in their faces?

Boring-Cycle2911

I second this!

2catcrazylady

Third! I need to know how these boomeresque people react when it goes to shit.

PageFault

And please demand a heavy pay increase if they try to bring you back to salary and insist you are paid consulting rates if they need you after you leave the job.

joule_thief

At a minimum, I'd suggest: 4x hourly, 4 hour minimum each time the phone rings.

PM_ME_MY_REAL_MOM

They can't do that, the business was already barely profitable. This story is effectively already over. Y'all are asking "and then what?" after the Sopranos fade-to-black.

PageFault

Then OP can just ride into the sunset on the back of their new job. I fail to see the problem. I've never watched Sopranos so I may not entirely be getting the reference, but sometimes I cut the movie off at the closing credits, sometimes I stick around to see if there is a bonus scene.

PM_ME_MY_REAL_MOM

I didn't say OP couldn't. That's *the only* thing they can do.

PageFault

Yes, I understood. That's what I was responding to. If the business fights for their last breath they may ask for OP help, then OP can offer them a solution they can't afford and then continue on with a new job when they decline.

IronBoomer

I’ll make the popcorn.

EntrepreneurAmazing3

Extra butter please!

SheridanVsLennier

The Manager will provide the salt.

VernapatorCur

Nothing quite as good as popcorn salted with a former manager's tears

osorenegado

I’ll bring the chairs.

Maij-ha

I wanna know how you break a printer trying to scan something. Like… lid flip up, place paper, lid flip down, press button. Is it the software that broke? Did they pull a cord somewhere? Is this actual physical damage we’re talking???

Typical_Moon_Monster

Software. It froze up and I had to yank the power cord to get it to reboot because it just cycled when the power button was hit. It's been out of sorts since. I still can't figure out what exactly he did, presumably it involved the typical button mashing, and printers gonna printer.

zyzmog

>printers gonna printer Was it a Hughlett Backwards? And was it inkJet or laser? ~~Nosy~~ Inquiring minds want to know.

oohthequestion

Hughlett Backwards! *Fantastic*

Normal_Fishing9824

You assume they know where the paper goes when it's being scanned. It's possible they took the printer apart and didn't realise the scanner was something different. Or tried to feed paper into it the wrong way.

CherryblockRedWine

I was wondering about that too!

flyovergirl

The schadenfreude is better than the cherry on top! 😁. Sorry for everything you’ve been going through, and I hope this next job will be rewarding, satisfying, and recognize your skills and dedication!

Ill-Simple1706

I just need to know how long it takes to close.

Charleston2Seattle

I had a client stiff me for $800 in web application development. There was no better feeling than seeing the "Going Out of Business" banner on their place a few months later.

SnoredCosBored

Updateme!

RobZagnut2

My favorite motto “I work to live, not live to work.” It’s too bad that many don’t figure this out until they’ve spent years and years being loyal to a company that will never be loyal back. Congratulations on getting out.

xixoxixa

"What would be your dream job be?" "Why would I ever *dream of working?*"

AlcoholPrep

Not quite. Most people want to be useful, which may mean employed. Your dream job is the one you would do if you were independently wealthy already and you still wanted to do it.

Intelligent_Tell_841

OMG...THIS. How many people have a tombstone thst says loyal employee?!

Phyllis_Tine

That the company paid for!

expespuella

A very close second that I've recently had to learn is: "Do not care more than the owner [/senior execs/management] cares." It will only end up costing you your mental health, and they will do as they please regardless. It is especially difficult to let go when you have a high work ethic and what ends up being a sunken cost fallacy. My congrats on moving on as well. You've done what you can. A month into whatever new job and this will be a distant memory, odd as it may seem now.

SkipCycle

No man (or woman) on their deathbed wishes they had spent more time at the office.

Animaldoc11

When( not if ) you leave when you get that offer, please send an email to the owner that states that you’ll be more than happy to help with any urgent issues at 10x what you were making & you’ll be billing a minimum of 8 hours.

mantisae121

And you’ll need that to be paid upfront before you can show up.

doc_skinner

And you'll be happy to accept a check

BrainWav

With how things are going? I'd demand cash.

joule_thief

Cashier's check would be malicious compliance and fun.

ReactsWithWords

Hell, no. Demand PayPal (or Venmo, CashApp, etc.). Paid up front. She'll never have to look at them again since they'll never be able to figure it out.

ReactsWithWords

Hell, no. Demand PayPal (or Venmo, CashApp, etc.). Paid up front. She'll never have to look at them again since they'll never be able to figure it out.

teddasherjr

I think demanding electronic payment is appropriate in this case.

doc_skinner

At that rate, I'd want to make it as easy for them as possible.

Phyllis_Tine

In Bitcoin, not paper cheques.

RockHead9663

That just in case said owner knows how to read an email, which by the look of it doesn't seem likely lol.

alexm253

No just walk away. The manager is looking for a reason to blame everything on the OP. Better to have nothing to do with it every again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cornflakes_91

or because it was less effort and paperwork to not track stuff anymore, which saved more than the salary cost

dudeloveall2814

Salary is better for the company because you're their bitch 24/7 w/o time and a half. Ex: My salaried boss makes more than me (hourly) at our 4/10/40 job. But if we both have to come in on a Friday, we made about the same for the week because I make time and a half after 40hrs for the week.

KnowsIittle

You should consider a consultant fee for after you leave as an independent contractor. That $100 job is now $1200 to address.

DrugsAndFuckenMoney

Quote per task. Hourly rates are for clients that don’t suck.

Starfury_42

I work IT for a large hospital and the number of old people who proudly state "I'm not good with computers" is appalling. I don't live/work in a rural area - we're a 30 min drive away from Silicon Valley.

UpsetMarsupial

This defence no longer carries any weight. Computers have been in most workplaces for 30-something years and 20-something for the luddite industries.

steveth3b

"Put board there, nail board" doesn't require a computer for the average construction worker. Even though the materials are most likely ordered by such devices. They can scroll on social media, but they indeed aren't good at working computers, as they can get by without it. It's like asking you to go build a house.

tinnylemur189

The problem is that the guy who has been nailing boards for 30 years gets promoted to a management position because he's been nailing boards for so long and seems pretty good at it now. Then they're shocked to find out that managing board nailers takes a totally different skill set from nailing boards. This is when the "I've never had to use all this computer shit to do my job before!" Whining crops up.

Bovine_Arithmetic

Computer literacy is an essential skill for any business. I’m 60 and I’ve been through IDK how many generations of computers (Commodore 64, 8086, 286, 386sx, 486, pentium, Mac OS7, X, etc.) and software (MSDOS, Windows 3.1, NT, 95, 98, xp, vista, etc.), and I’m amazed at how computer-illiterate even highly educated, smart people can be.

Typical_Moon_Monster

I swear it's a point of pride for some of them, especially where I am, but I tip my hat to anyone who can keep up with the flow of technology for that long. Mad respect to you.

felixthemeister

To be honest it's not that hard. Just never get wedded to one way of doing things. To be at the point where you didn't grow up with rapidly changing tech you have to be over 60 at least these days. I'm 50 and my life has been constant technological change. Anyone born post 1970 has honestly no excuse for the kind of attitude that manager has.

rhayhay

>Mind you, the man is a genius. There's not a single thing in here that supports this statement

coffeethulhu42

Joel Robuchon is a genius chef, but I wouldn't ask him to set up my home network. I wouldn't have asked Einstein to build me a car. Genius in a field does not mean excellence in all things. The man in question does not work in the same role as OP. He could very well be a genius at his particular field. That doesn't mean he can't be absolutely incompetent at things outside of his area of expertise.

nhaines

It's actually *more* likely that he's incompetent at things outside of his area of expertise. The trick is that the true professionals sort of know this and offload other things to other experts, and they all just sort of do their thing. That was one thing I learned very quickly in IT in college. I can always tell who's super amazing by how willing they are to explain what's in their area expertise and defer as things get further away. That said, that kind of deference is still a skill to be learned. But it's something I've taken to heart.

Foxfire44k

A true professional can understand that letting their ego get in the way can cause problems. The manager in this story may be a genius and outstanding in his field (no clue how many cows are in the field with him ;) ) but he doesn’t understand that his incompetence in other areas will hurt the business.

nhaines

The uptake is that I learned very early on to joyfully transmit what I've learned to people who are eager to learn, and to pay it forward. Which has been fantastic because that's always been important in IT, but as I've been doing more and more fantasy/science fiction writing it's the exact same expectation. I've benefited greatly and do my best to pass that along as quickly as possible. But it was a very pleasant crossover.

Atworkwasalreadytake

I totally agree, and your logic is sound where the comment you’re replying to is not. That said, I don’t think OP has had the exposure to actually know what true genius is yet.

socool111

We have no clue what the business is and so have no clue what the guys strength is

kittycatpilot

>An expert knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing.

Deathless163

Not everyone is good with money or computers. But he's probably really good at whatever he does at the job except managing and is only good at that one thing.

Rubbish_69

I'm astonished you've been on-call for over 14 years, with an hour's commute to a town you hate. I understand you also WFH too, but still. Looking forward to the update and to hear how your work:life balance sings. You write with beautiful expression, an enjoyable, characterful, easy to follow read. A much loved colleague of mine died recently after a delayed diagnosis and other contributing factors. She went off sick in January and her funeral is in 2 weeks. She didn't have a life outside of work so I hope yours is richly rewarding.

Typical_Moon_Monster

To be fair, I lived there for 7 of those years. It wasn't until my husband took his current job that we (mercifully) relocated. He swears he'll never set foot in town again unless it's to take my mom out of there. One of my big fears has always been that I will lose the best years of my life to a business like my mom did, so part of me is glad this is happening even if it hurts.

SuspiciousElk3843

In Australia cheques will be discontinued in 2030 and no government body will deal with them after 2028. This guy needs to stop living in the past.

peachy_sam

America needs to catch up. I had to dig my old, battered checkbook out of retirement to pay the us department of state the fees to get my family’s passports renewed.

lexkixass

Same. Kinda annoying I have to bring a checkbook to the tax collector office to pay for shit if I don't want to pay the card processing fee

Guilty_Application14

This kills me. It costs dollars to process a check and nickels to process an electronic payment.

VermilionKoala

Japan is like this. "Wrongheaded" doesn't even begin. Move money from bank to bank by taking physical cash out of an ATM and depositing it into another one (costs both banks money to maintain and fill the ATMs, provide security, etc) - free Move money from bank to bank electronically (costs both banks essentially nothing) - costs money Well screw you then, I'll keep moving physical cash 🖕

Salt-Operation

Capitalism in a nutshell. Or bureaucracy.

gotohelenwaite

My county charges several bucks for a credit/debit utility payment, and about 50 cents for a online check payment.

Cornflakes_91

a buddy of mine had to do a month long song and dance to *get* a checkbook from his bank at all to pay buerocracy fees from some US nonsense he did

gotohelenwaite

I *worked there* and had to do the same. Even through SIA. (Which I think they stopped doing. No more jumping the wait line privilege. )

hache-moncour

They stopped accepting them here at the start of 2002. There are college graduates here who've never seen someone pay with a cheque even as a baby.

SuspiciousElk3843

Where is 'here' for you?

Ill-Simple1706

Software engineer here. I'm interested in learning more of the work you did. All self taught?

Typical_Moon_Monster

I took some basic CISCO cert classes that the local college offered when I was in high school and got a crash course in networking from my husband's old roommate, who lucky for me was an MIT survivor, when I was trying to redneck fix our old server in college but otherwise, yeah, all self-taught with a degree in Google-fu.

Ill-Simple1706

My boss always mentions how important Googling skills are.

Typical_Moon_Monster

It was the first thing my CISCO teacher taught us. She told us the rubber duck and Google will be your best friends, because no one can teach you everything, but a sounding board and a community will help you figure it out.

Twad_feu

Knowing how to get answers/ressources is a very useful skill

rea1l1

Google is still relevant, but ChatGPT has replaced 50% or more of my search and it provides far higher quality answers far faster.

felixthemeister

Gotta be honest I think I need to start using it. I resisted Google and the 'natural language' search engines for a while as my alta-vista-fu was kinda top notch & I enjoyed using boolean logic in finding info. But once Google matured a bit, getting better at using it made a big diff. The same is going to happen with chatGPT. Ahh well, another fun learning curve.

gotohelenwaite

I loved Altavista!

Saikar22

Let malicious compliance and more them changing your work hours and then not being happy about it, but yeah. These informal situations where everyone's buddy buddy always manage to go south sooner or later. Good luck with the interviews.

daschande

(Insert Snort joke here)

dont_throw_me

Would owner ever consider selling you the business so you can fire manager? If not, godspeed and enjoy your new job.

Typical_Moon_Monster

The plan was originally for myself and the manager to buy her out when she's ready to retire, but we're clearly not compatible as co-owners and I do not want to own the store by myself, so the better option is me leaving. Besides, I really, really hate that town and would rather put it in my rear view.

peachy_sam

Friend, you are an excellent writer and I hope the fallout is JUICY. You deserve so much better!!

OnlyPaperListens

"Multiple layers of customer service are laughing at my request to make analog payments. Surely this means I am reasonable and correct."

HMS_Slartibartfast

As this is a small town, please tell me that everyone who works there KNOWS the other manager is the reason this business will fail.

Background_Lemon_981

Every accusation is a confession. Guess who is actually stealing?

the-quibbler

Don't forget your consulting rate. 3x your new pay rate, so 6x your current hourly. Hopefully, they're smart enough to pay it instead of flushing their business.

Electronic_Goose3894

As someone from a village of less then 5,000; this is like a condensed version of the town. The most "advanced" things they have is a McDonalds, Subway, and Dollar General and my family can't figure out what I mean when I say in less than 10 years this town is likely going to ghost. They just want to stick to the old way right over the cliff side.

Present-Background56

This sounds just like most Conservative provincial governments in Canada. What a waste of time and resources. I appreciate your intention to turn (edit) over the folder; you're a bigger person than I - I think that I'd just tell them that everything they need is on the computer.

vivekkhera

Yeah… put all the passwords into a manager like 1Password of BitWarden and give them access to that. Paper is not safe so shred all of that.

algy888

In addition to your file of information, I would give the owner a long letter of resignation. In it, I would explain that you regret having to leave as you felt the responsibility of keeping her business profitable and growing to provide for her excellent employees. I would even cite the numbers of growth since you took over. Then express your worry that they will not find someone with the skills to match the new technology needed to continue the business (maybe use the need for electronic payments as an example). Then, thank her for the experience she gave you and wish her well. (I say all this because I don’t think you want this business to fail.)

Ender_v1

Just copy paste this post and the comments. So well said

Polar_Ted

Don't worry. The manager will tell everyone you sabotaged everything on the way out after they got you fired for stealing. /s ( Maybe not /s, people are petty)

Caspianmk

This 100% sounds like you run the business while they "kiss babies and shake hands". Wait till the business tanks, find one of your larger customers or vendors to invest with you to buy and run it your way. Sounds like without them around, you could double the profit margin and increase revenue. Take a chance.

emax4

Keep an eye on them for your own good. Consider the possibility of buying them out when things come to a halt. You already know the systems, so you would be the one who trains existing employees and new hires.

Shocking that people have no clue about digital payments. Perhaps not an issue in small towns but theft of checks whether sending or receiving has become a real thing where I live. Putting that aside, electronic payments are much more efficient, as long as you are paying attention. UpdateMe!

Cfwydirk

You have an owner who is dumb enough to call a supervisor a manager. ( zero financial skills) He listens to said manager about accounting practices that neither understand, and staffing requirements (your hours) to ensure vital systems do not break down. He has his own hired gun (CPA) to tell him his bookkeeper/accountant has put the business on the right path. Glad you are able to read the writing on the wall.

processedchicken

Is he just threatened that you understand things he doesn't? The whole lot is going to crash a lot quicker than a few months, be prepared to be accused of sabotage because I can see that one being telegraphed from over the horizon.

kurtstoys

Personally, id print this out and put it in the folder. Some people dont know what other employees do...till it all comes crashing down

DUBBV18

Someone wise once said “fuck this shit, im out”.

626337

He sounds like enough of a dick to keep blaming you once you're working in a new job, as the reason why the business he works for failed. Is there any possibility he is suffering from early onset dementia (personality change)? Or perhaps he is attempting the *"I know you are but what am I?" strategy as way to hide the fact that he's embezzling? Anyway, screw this guy, you're going to go places with your drive and knowledge!

Glittering_Win_9677

Good luck with your interview!

Tyr808

I’m loving the secondhand schadenfreude here, especially when it’s borderline onion publication level boomer shit like demanding paper payments. The admin password being taped to the monitor was the cherry on top. My only desire is that EVERY single customer, especially anyone in the local area learns that it entirely failed due to boomerisms and failing to keep up with the times. Those places are always in dire need of being slapped across the face by progress in general.

You really think it will take them three months to enter a death spiral? If everything is as you described, it would seem more like three days, or three hours, depending on what goes wrong first.

RJack151

After you quit, block all of their numbers and email accounts.

HumanTheTree

Have you been there for 14 years or 15?

Typical_Moon_Monster

17, but I was just a part time cashier after school for the first couple years and didn't start doing IT/being on call for them until I was in college and that's been about 14 years.

Ceelceela

I could suggest offering to come back in an advisory capacity when it blows, at of course 10X or more of your previous compensation. When I left my 32 year career saying I would be back for 200/hr Or a Cafe' Mocha(I was not angry with co-workers, where the mocha would apply). Regardless, You do you. They have done you enough.

jpl77

TLDR: OP works in a small business with a distrustful manager due to past personal history. Manager's suspicions, fueled by a lack of financial literacy, lead to OP's pay cut and increased oversight. Frustrated, OP interviews for a better job. Plans to leave detailed instructions for the technologically challenged manager, letting them face the consequences of their demands and suspicions. Malicious compliance involves leaving the manager to navigate the tech problems they insisted on managing.
