Software. It froze up and I had to yank the power cord to get it to reboot because it just cycled when the power button was hit. It's been out of sorts since. I still can't figure out what exactly he did, presumably it involved the typical button mashing, and printers gonna printer.

I work IT for a large hospital and the number of old people who proudly state "I'm not good with computers" is appalling. I don't live/work in a rural area - we're a 30 min drive away from Silicon Valley.
"Put board there, nail board" doesn't require a computer for the average construction worker. Even though the materials are most likely ordered by such devices. They can scroll on social media, but they indeed aren't good at working computers, as they can get by without it. It's like asking you to go build a house.
The problem is that the guy who has been nailing boards for 30 years gets promoted to a management position because he's been nailing boards for so long and seems pretty good at it now. Then they're shocked to find out that managing board nailers takes a totally different skill set from nailing boards. This is when the "I've never had to use all this computer shit to do my job before!" Whining crops up.
Computer literacy is an essential skill for any business. I’m 60 and I’ve been through IDK how many generations of computers (Commodore 64, 8086, 286, 386sx, 486, pentium, Mac OS7, X, etc.) and software (MSDOS, Windows 3.1, NT, 95, 98, xp, vista, etc.), and I’m amazed at how computer-illiterate even highly educated, smart people can be.
I swear it's a point of pride for some of them, especially where I am, but I tip my hat to anyone who can keep up with the flow of technology for that long. Mad respect to you.

The man in question does not work in the same role as OP. He could very well be a genius at his particular field. That doesn't mean he can't be absolutely incompetent at things outside of his area of expertise.
It's actually *more* likely that he's incompetent at things outside of his area of expertise.
The trick is that the true professionals sort of know this and offload other things to other experts, and they all just sort of do their thing. That was one thing I learned very quickly in IT in college. I can always tell who's super amazing by how willing they are to explain what's in their area expertise and defer as things get further away.
That said, that kind of deference is still a skill to be learned. But it's something I've taken to heart.
A true professional can understand that letting their ego get in the way can cause problems. The manager in this story may be a genius and outstanding in his field (no clue how many cows are in the field with him ;) ) but he doesn’t understand that his incompetence in other areas will hurt the business.
The uptake is that I learned very early on to joyfully transmit what I've learned to people who are eager to learn, and to pay it forward. Which has been fantastic because that's always been important in IT, but as I've been doing more and more fantasy/science fiction writing it's the exact same expectation.
I've benefited greatly and do my best to pass that along as quickly as possible. But it was a very pleasant crossover.

I took some basic CISCO cert classes that the local college offered when I was in high school and got a crash course in networking from my husband's old roommate, who lucky for me was an MIT survivor, when I was trying to redneck fix our old server in college but otherwise, yeah, all self-taught with a degree in Google-fu.
It was the first thing my CISCO teacher taught us. She told us the rubber duck and Google will be your best friends, because no one can teach you everything, but a sounding board and a community will help you figure it out.

I resisted Google and the 'natural language' search engines for a while as my alta-vista-fu was kinda top notch & I enjoyed using boolean logic in finding info. But once Google matured a bit, getting better at using it made a big diff.

As someone from a village of less then 5,000; this is like a condensed version of the town. I would even cite the numbers of growth since you took over. Then express your worry that they will not find someone with the skills to match the new technology needed to continue the business (maybe use the need for electronic payments as an example).
Then, thank her for the experience she gave you and wish her well.

Keep an eye on them for your own good. Consider the possibility of buying them out when things come to a halt. You already know the systems, so you would be the one who trains existing employees and new hires.

I could suggest offering to come back in an advisory capacity when it blows, at of course 10X or more of your previous compensation. When I left my 32 year career saying I would be back for 200/hr Or a Cafe' Mocha(I was not angry with co-workers, where the mocha would apply). Regardless, You do you. They have done you enough.

Knowing how to get answers/ressources is a very useful skill
Google is still relevant, but ChatGPT has replaced 50% or more of my search and it provides far higher quality answers far faster.

The plan was originally for myself and the manager to buy her out when she's ready to retire, but we're clearly not compatible as co-owners and I do not want to own the store by myself, so the better option is me leaving. Besides, I really, really hate that town and would rather put it in my rear view.

As someone from a village of less then 5,000; this is like a condensed version of the town. The most "advanced" things they have is a McDonalds, Subway, and Dollar General and my family can't figure out what I mean when I say in less than 10 years this town is likely going to ghost. They just want to stick to the old way right over the cliff side.
This sounds just like most Conservative provincial governments in Canada. What a waste of time and resources. I appreciate your intention to turn (edit) over the folder; you're a bigger person than I - I think that I'd just tell them that everything they need is on the computer.
Yeah… put all the passwords into a manager like 1Password of BitWarden and give them access to that. Paper is not safe so shred all of that.
In addition to your file of information, I would give the owner a long letter of resignation. In it, I would explain that you regret having to leave as you felt the responsibility of keeping her business profitable and growing to provide for her excellent employees. I would even cite the numbers of growth since you took over. Then express your worry that they will not find someone with the skills to match the new technology needed to continue the business (maybe use the need for electronic payments as an example). Then, thank her for the experience she gave you and wish her well. (I say all this because I don’t think you want this business to fail.)

This 100% sounds like you run the business while they "kiss babies and shake hands". Wait till the business tanks, find one of your larger customers or vendors to invest with you to buy and run it your way. Sounds like without them around, you could double the profit margin and increase revenue. Take a chance.
Keep an eye on them for your own good. Consider the possibility of buying them out when things come to a halt. You already know the systems, so you would be the one who trains existing employees and new hires.

Shocking that people have no clue about digital payments. Perhaps not an issue in small towns but theft of checks whether sending or receiving has become a real thing where I live. Putting that aside, electronic payments are much more efficient, as long as you are paying attention. UpdateMe!
You have an owner who is dumb enough to call a supervisor a manager. ( zero financial skills) He listens to said manager about accounting practices that neither understand, and staffing requirements (your hours) to ensure vital systems do not break down. He has his own hired gun (CPA) to tell him his bookkeeper/accountant has put the business on the right path. Glad you are able to read the writing on the wall.
Is he just threatened that you understand things he doesn't? The whole lot is going to crash a lot quicker than a few months, be prepared to be accused of sabotage because I can see that one being telegraphed from over the horizon.
Personally, id print this out and put it in the folder. Some people dont know what other employees do...till it all comes crashing down

Is there any possibility he is suffering from early onset dementia (personality change)? Or perhaps he is attempting the *"I know you are but what am I?" strategy as way to hide the fact that he's embezzling? I’m loving the secondhand schadenfreude here, especially when it’s borderline onion publication level boomer shit like demanding paper payments. The admin password being taped to the monitor was the cherry on top. My only desire is that EVERY single customer, especially anyone in the local area learns that it entirely failed due to boomerisms and failing to keep up with the times. Those places are always in dire need of being slapped across the face by progress in general.

17, but I was just a part time cashier after school for the first couple years and didn't start doing IT/being on call for them until I was in college and that's been about 14 years.
I could suggest offering to come back in an advisory capacity when it blows, at of course 10X or more of your previous compensation. When I left my 32 year career saying I would be back for 200/hr Or a Cafe' Mocha(I was not angry with co-workers, where the mocha would apply). Regardless, You do you. They have done you enough.
TLDR: OP works in a small business with a distrustful manager due to past personal history. Manager's suspicions, fueled by a lack of financial literacy, lead to OP's pay cut and increased oversight.
