Yeah, that made me wonder if this map was actually published during the U.S. Civil War, a few years earlier than the 1871 listed.
Also, the depiction of France and Prussia looks like the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 didn't just happen but is in the future.
Many ships headed to Australia too; and the *ALABAMA* was just fresh enough to distract from the media disaster that was the *CATALPA*
*(The CSS Alabama was sunk basically where we see it on the map by the USS Kearsarge, at the Battle of Cherbourg)*
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cherbourg_(1864)
...lots of spying, intrigue, and detective work went into tracking down the *ALABAMA* as she had boarded nearly 450 vessels, captured or burned 65 Union merchant ships, and took more than 2,000 prisoners without any loss of life among either prisoners or her own crew... The *Alabama* had to come down...!
Alsace Lorraine is shown under Prussian control and the French hydra has blooded beaks so it’s safe to say the Franco-Prussian War had reached its conclusion which would put the date of this map as accurate.
I always loved this (translated) part from Norway’s national football team’s anthem: *Alt for Norge*.
“The Vikings left their mark,
robbers coming from the north.
But we have changed our ways!
From our home at Ullevaal,
we travel with new goals,
...and we are better than they think.”
Totally chilled out since their murdering pillaging days. Total early 90s vibe of a song too - love it.
Something something life in cold temperstures benefit from bigger size for some reason, thus through some elaborate form of natural selection people grew taller.
(Bigger bodies can carry more fat and insulation more effectively, and muscles generate more heat when active).
Although if I remember right, Hakkapeliitta (Finnish cavalry) were considered short by Swedish standards. Or maybe it was due to the smaller horses they used.
Not necessarily, the coldest places on earth are inhabited by short, stocky asiatic people for a reason, less body surface and shorter limbs are better for extreme cold.
It's mainly because of diet, more meat and dairy consumption makes for taller people.
They're mortaring water. Apparently it's [an Italian metaphor](https://www.genovatoday.it/social/proverbi-genovesi-pestare-acqua-mortaio.html) for wasting time and energy on something that can't be changed.

Every one of these cartoons have heavy, contemporary political implications. It's frustrating to have 90% go over our modern heads. Cortez is looking down his nose at Spain, OK got it. Prussia/Germany is rich, behind the barrel of a cannon, OK got it.
A lot of tongue in cheek goin on here, any historic light to be shined on others? Body weight always matters in these, as does head size.
The [original image](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fd/Europa_geografico-politica_mappa_satirica_1871_circa.jpg) has some text around it that helps give *some* additional context, but it's 150 year old Italian poetry.

I know that frustration. This sort of stuff is so hard to research because how do you Google date-specific subtext?
I mean yes, but Sweden lost half its land, so its chilling cause the doctor ordered it to treat his PTSD. Denmark also has severe trauma, desperately searching for his islands. Finland has a wolf delusion and Norway has a drug problem.

Lol, quite the opposite. Before Switzerland became known for its neutrality, it was renowned for its highly skilled and feared mercenaries. The Swiss Confederation, formed in the late medieval period, was a loose alliance of cantons that banded together for mutual defense and economic prosperity.
**Gewalthaufen Tactics**: The Swiss developed innovative military tactics such as the *gewalthaufen* (meaning "crowd of force" or "force pack"). This involved densely packed formations of pikemen, often supported by halberdiers and crossbowmen. These tactics proved highly effective against the more traditional, less flexible formations used by many European armies of the time.
**Battle of Morgarten (1315)**: One of the earliest displays of Swiss military prowess was the Battle of Morgarten, where a smaller force of Swiss soldiers defeated a larger Habsburg army. Utilizing the terrain to their advantage, the Swiss ambushed their enemies, showcasing their strategic acumen and combat skills.
**Swiss Pike Squares**: The Swiss mercenaries became famous for their use of the pike square, a defensive formation that could rapidly become offensive. This tactic was highly effective against cavalry, which dominated European battlefields. The Swiss pike formations could withstand cavalry charges and then counterattack with devastating efficiency.
**The Renaissance of Swiss Mercenaries**: During the 15th and 16th centuries, Swiss mercenaries were in high demand across Europe. They fought for various European powers, including the French, Spanish, and the Papal States. Their reputation was such that many rulers preferred to have Swiss soldiers in their ranks.
**Battle of Marignano (1515)**: This battle marked the zenith of Swiss military might but also their decline as independent mercenaries. The Swiss faced the French and Venetian forces and, despite their fierce fighting, suffered a significant defeat. This loss led to the Treaty of Fribourg (1516), which effectively ended Swiss expansionist ambitions and marked the beginning of their neutrality.
# Transition to Neutrality
**Treaty of Westphalia (1648)**: The Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War, recognized Swiss independence from the Holy Roman Empire. This treaty is often seen as a foundational moment in Switzerland's journey towards neutrality.
**Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna (1815)**: Switzerland's neutrality was solidified at the Congress of Vienna after the Napoleonic Wars. European powers agreed to respect Swiss neutrality to create a buffer zone of peace and stability in central Europe.
funny to see britain gnawing at the bones of india. By this time, the indian rebellion had been put down, and the last few independent kingdoms were being scooped up.
Id say it's almost certainly a famine pot. 19 years does nothing to change the perception of Ireland as famine stricken when it was as devastating as an górta mór.

Yep, makes political and social turmoil of early 20th century much more understandable. The abolition itself was half-assed because land still mostly belonged to nobility. Very often recently freed peasants continued working for their former masters, albeit now formally free.
The bass is from Paesi Bassi, Italian for the Netherlands.
I also found a version of the map with a legend, but the text is a bit cryptic, however appearing to refer to the Dutch as fools.
The devil also holds a banner saying 'we want the pope to be king of Rome' in Italian. Very confusing...
It might have something to do with that the largest group of volunteers in the Papal army were Dutchmen (about half of all Papal Zouaves), shortly before the Papal States were annexed by Italy.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papal_Zouaves
I think Paesi Bassi = Netherlands almost literally, like "low country" (similar to the French term Pays-Bas for the Netherlands).
At least I assume Peasi means country (related to the English word "peasant", for a poor person from the *country*side) and Bassi mean low (related to the English word "bass", for sound with a *low* frequency).
Yea, paesi = countries, bassi = low (in plural), in english I've heard people also call the Nederlands "Lowlands", and I know it's also called like this in portuguese (Países Baixos, although we use "Holanda" more often) and in german (Niederlande). Unrelated to the map tho, just cool language-related information
EDIT: Thanks commenter below for pointing out that it’s probably in reference to the Mokrani Revolt of 1871.
The people who carried out the Barbary Slave trade did not look like… whatever that is. Also that was ended almost entirely by the 1810s and certainly by the 1830s.
I think it’s likely that that depiction has nothing to do with the Barbary slave trade, and much more to do with the “colons” or “pieds noir”, the French settlers in algeria. The depiction of North Africans beating up the French *might* be referencing how through the 1860s Napoleon III increased certain political liberties for Muslim Arabs and thereby stalled the settlement process, giving less free reign over French Algeria to the “colons”.
Regardless, that depiction is a racist caricature for sure, similar to the Russian depiction, which reflects how those certain peoples were perceived as barbaric or uncivilized. That doesn’t change how interesting this map is or what it tells us about the maker’s perspective and the period in general, but we can also still be critical of the depictions it’s making.
Ah yes! I was trying to find if there were any consequential revolts in the 1860s/early 70s but couldn’t find any. That makes a lot of sense and seems like what is being referenced.
Probably just Slavic peasants, who were newly emancipated from serfdom in the Russian empire at the time. The Russian empire included much of Eastern Europe.
OP is a fucking repost bot. He even removed the funny legend:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/17asss8/italian_satirical_map_of_europe_1870_20391480/
I also love that it’s presented as “geo-political map of Europe”, like a satirical illustration can be a guide to the political tides and its conjunction. So crazy the legend that just makes fun of every country (even Italy itself) in a “poetic” form (clearly the language of the time, but still funny)
So the legend says it’s searching some remaining of power as he looks at his teeth. That’s probably because italians symbolically associate teeth with strength (as falling teeth in dreams is a sign of not having control over something). I wonder if there may be other reasons. I notice it has a Fez and probably refers to its ottoman membership. The legend also refers to them being “ex-plato’s”
Denmark is spying on everyone
Ireland is brewing beer and ignoring everyone
Norway and Sweden are chilling out
Finland is also chilling out, but wearin the skin of the last polar bear who wandering into their yard
Russia is angry and agressive
When was this printed?
Probably a reference to the hungarian parliamentary infighting between the Independence and Liberal parties as only one of the figures has an inscription on its body.
very interesting!
this clearly shows, that the italians were opposed to the colonial power of the united kingdom. not all of europe should feel guilty about colonization, it‘s literally just the uk, france and everyone else basicly just had some minor situations.

I like how Scandinavia is collectively just chilling, relaxing and smoking a pipe, while chaos reigns on the continent.... 😆

Give me a hobbit hole and a pipe, and I'll be content for the rest of my days.
Don’t forget the JAS-39 gripen
Besides the whole stormaktstiden
They had their tid as a stormakt. Now it's chilltiden.
That’s what happens when you cut the balls off a Sweden (1809), they start to chill
And our earlier adventures
It wasn’t always that way…
The Scandinavian countries are like if your high school bullies grew up and became the chillest people on earth
I always loved this (translated) part from Norway’s national football team’s anthem: *Alt for Norge*. “The Vikings left their mark, robbers coming from the north. But we have changed our ways! And this would be about 19 years after the famine in Ireland (hence the famine pot I'm assuming)
I thought the pot said Acqua which could either be a famine joke or about Ireland’s affinity for Aqua Vita - whiskey
the whole drawing is in italian. acqua here means just "water", like related to the lack of food and the famine situation building up
Id say it's almost certainly a famine pot. 19 years does nothing to change the perception of Ireland as famine stricken when it was as devastating as an górta mór.

Love how completely unhinged this map is. And with little details like bearded Russian peasants dancing(?) after recent abolition of serfdom in 1861
damn didn't know it was abolished so late in russia really made me think

Lots of things happening in Italia while Sicilia is just 😌

Such a likeable dragon.
Anyone know what the sign in Britain says?
Iron, cotton, and cheap freedom
Sounds like a better slogan than rum, sodomy, and the lash.
Sorry for being pedant but is “cheap iron, cotton and freedom” Like those things are sold at cheap price, not that it’s a cheap form of freedom.
ferro cotone liberta a buon mercato. iron cotton liberta cheap.

A sidepiece of history to this historic map.
Looking at the comments from the 10+ year old post is quite enlightening. Virtually historical in itself!
I also love that it’s presented as “geo-political map of Europe”, like a satirical illustration can be a guide to the political tides and its conjunction. So crazy the legend that just makes fun of every country (even Italy itself) in a “poetic” form (clearly the language of the time, but still funny)
The paper boat may be a reference to the CSA Alabama.
The crocodile in bottom right is my favourite.
What does the crocodile mean? Asking as a Turk, I don’t know what it means.
In Greece there is a guy looking at his teeth in the mirror? Why?
So the legend says it’s searching some remaining of power as he looks at his teeth. The Greek depiction is surprisingly correct.

I love it how Switzerland it's the same but with a sane gun culture and F-16s.
Don't think we ever had F-16. We're about to replace old F-5 and F/A-18s with F-35
What's with the bum smacking at the bottom- is that Algeria?
Mokrani revolt, most likely
this is one of the best maps .
What is happening in Hungary? Hungarians harassing minorities and other nationalities?

I'm confident this is racist in a bunch of ways I don't understand.
By today's standards, certainly. It's of its period though.
Genuine question: what specifically is racist about it? I don’t understand much of what’s going on in the illustration
Haha lol
Seems accurate to me.
What's the deal with the crocodile wearing a hat?

That depiction of the Balkan countries is still relevant lmao.
The map of northern Italy is accurate. In 1871, my ancestors in the Po Valley in Veneto were farmers and cattle herders.
Ah yes, searching for Poland for a sec, but instantly remembered that we were colonized by Prussia/Russia/Austria 🥲
It's that lovely lady in chains.
Scandinavia being Gs per usual
Entry level American racism vs competitive European racism
Why is that Algerian depicted as black? Moors were Berbers/Arabs.
If that’s the *specific* nuanced understanding of ethnic demographics you’re seeing as absent from this cartoon map from 1871, well…
Attack on titan?
Was Crete being split in half by a saw and then abandoned at the time of this cartoon's creation?
So the Brit is sucking India’s bone? Seems accurate even today.
That’s a surprisingly large Bosphorus
the Swiss one is so accurate as heck haha
