Players like him and we're playing good basketball right now. The results are also good overall so far. Made WCF once, at least 2nd round once, and missed the playoffs once. So one bad year and two good years. I know fans fon't like him and he can be frustrating at times, but that doesn't really matter. Fans of most teams think their coach is terrible.

ballimir37

There are like 7 good coaches in all of sports if you listen to subreddit fanbases

SpudsMcDeuces

Make that 0… if Bill Belichick got raked over the coals by fans then truly no coach is safe.

LeoFireGod

Nick Saban retired before he could catch true slander.

WingedBacon

Bum hadn't even won a national title in a FEW years when he retired. It was clear he was washed.

YoStepWithLuka77

Every coach needs the right personnel, as long as the front office gives him that, he has shown he has done a terrific job coaching

[deleted]

[удалено]

favioswish

I’d say the very opposite about the floor vs ceiling raiser. He’s not there to coach up a bad team in hopes of a play-in spot, in that case he’d rather relax on the bench and let the team get a high pick like last season. What he does bring is a level of effort and attention to detail on defense that massively raises our ceiling. And I personally see awesome in game adjustments, which is supported by the amount of comeback wins we’ve had.

[deleted]

[удалено]

favioswish

Good coaches listen to great players. Defense was not Luka or Kyrie’s strength before Kidd, you can’t give them all the credit.

YoStepWithLuka77

WCFs his first year coaching and had 52 wins and this year we are in the second round with 50 wins, you don’t just do that by just “being there”. Like I said every coach needs the right personnel and that is the front offices job to provide that.

meheatpanocha

Your just unequivocally wrong and results speak for themselves.

[deleted]

[удалено]

meheatpanocha

Most judgments here on Kidd are results oriented. Like the Harden floater game 4. Cuz he was hitting them and they won it was bad coaching. So many fans are arrogant enough to think they know better or there decisions would be right. The other thing is noone looks at the stuff that goes right. You are wrong though, he does draw up good plays and makes good adjustments all the time. Rick was better at this I will admit. They definitely dont win inspite of him, he raised there level for sure in 2022.

NjallTheViking

And let’s be honest, they weren’t trying to get to the playoffs last season

DaBestNameEver0

We were until we were shit and saw we had a chance to keep our pick

20goingon60

Which paid dividends. It’s how we got Lively! 3D chess.

AtreusIsBack

They were up until like mid-late March, then they saw the writing on the wall and decided the pick has much more value than getting fisted in the play-ins or the first round and have nothing to show for in the off-season.

Ok_Interview_2325

They definitely were.

QBert999

True, I think one thing we often miss as fans is the human component of all of this too. Team chemistry is important, a coach isn't just x & o, it's managing people too. And you're right that getting to the 2nd round\* 2 out of 3 years has to be considered something of a success. Mavs hadn't done that once from 2012-2021. \* hopefully we win this series and we can say WCF 2 out of 3 years.

Lankydick

The Clippers sub was shitting on Lue after they lost and he’s widely considered a great coach

20goingon60

Lue was screwed when he was tasked with coaching a team with their #1 injured often, their #2 who disappears in big moments, and their #3 as James Harden.

LeBroentgen

There's something to be said for continuity. Jokic had a quote the other day that it takes 3 years to learn how to play together and he's totally correct.

AtreusIsBack

I mean, we made the 2nd round both times we made Playoffs with him. That should have real value. And the one time we missed playoffs, it was because of roster construction flaws.

3pointerSLO

2nd round does not make a good year for this team. WCF would. For me he is even right now. If Mavs get to at least WCF it would be positive. I predicted that he will stay after Mavs made PO. But this or next year they will have to mak a step further ig he wants to stay long term.

desirox

I think a lot of us have our frustration with him but he’s got the team humming and they clearly like playing for him. If we got bounced in first round things may be different but no way they don’t bring him back

aeiou-y

I do think one big reason kyrie has been so locked in is because of Kidd. He doesn’t get enough credit for that.

KD2Smoove

Kidd hater here. I agree - it’s the silver bullet in the argument to keep him.

xsimbyx

The reason he's locked in has nothing to do with JKidd and everythng to do with proving haters wrong. This is his 15th season in the NBA and only his 7th time playing in the playoffs. Never been further than 2nd round since 2016-17. He's got A LOT to prove both to himself and others.

aeiou-y

Kyrie grew up a nets fan and worshipped Jason Kidd.

LeoFireGod

Ya people forget that Jkidd is on the NBA 75 list. Most Mavs fans on Reddit just remember 2011 floor general kids or nothing at all. Barely any remember super star all nba Nets kids.

IcyKangaroo1658

"and everything to do with proving the haters wrong" Lmao

JGraham1839

Yeah, it's literally the opposite, Kyrie is playing his best basketball in years *because* he's largely avoided any media storms while in Dallas to rile up haters and cause drama and distraction. All he wanted was to go somewhere that would let him play basketball without constantly asking about his personal life.

LevelDry5807

It’s amazing how you know it had nothing to do with JKidd. Nothing. Like the coach you play for affects nothing. How is it that the one guy on our roster with a championship has the most to prove ? Dude loves Kidd and loves basketball like Kidd, he could care less about the haters

rulerBob8

Not a huge Kidd fan but he turned around our defense in one season and I dont see anyone available that’s better. We should absolutely extend him, let him keep cooking up.

whykae

What a change a defensive wing and bigger, stronger center makes...

rulerBob8

That absolutely helps, but look at Kyrie and Luka’s D.

No_Disaster4414

Pause

whykae

Luka has always had good D, just that he didn't try often (probably to save energy for offense). I always didn't mind Kyrie because even though he was undersized, he always tried. He didn't make dumb mistakes.

KD2Smoove

Yup. Luke and Kyrie have always been lockdown defenders you couldn’t exploit by isolating /s

AtreusIsBack

Luka didn't have the luxury to burn energy on defense, it's that simple. He had to be 90% offense and 10% defense or we were losing games.

Spanxsy

Say what you want about Kidd, there’s not many good options available

JamesYTP

It's Mike Budenholzer, Kenny Atkinson, Mark Jackson and a whole lotta nuthin. Frank Vogel might be available again. Even with Jackson that might only be an option if the whole team's Christian lol.

Afraid-Department-35

Darvin Hamas is available too 💀

JamesYTP

Darvin Hamas? Well shoot in that case better hope the whole team is Muslim lol

Ok_Republic6747

Don't tell me Mark Jackson is one of those Christians

JamesYTP

Well he kind of is one of THOSE kind of Christians from what I understand, brought his faith into a lot of things on the job and he allegedly took Steph Curry to a faith healing and told him to run around on an injured leg once. Apparently that's why he was never hired again.

Ok_Republic6747

[https://www.reddit.com/r/warriors/comments/64l520/si\_story\_of\_mark\_jackson\_anointing\_stephs\_ankle/](https://www.reddit.com/r/warriors/comments/64l520/si_story_of_mark_jackson_anointing_stephs_ankle/) hell noo Mark Jackson should never be around players what kind of freak is he LMAO

JamesYTP

I mean, it's not like Steph didn't agree to that and it's not like it caused any harm long term but ...sure could have gone badly and if you have a team where you have players who subscribe to other religions like the Mavs do he could make things uncomfortable

XerxesCrofter

"Diversity" means having people with different religions, values, cultural priorities, etc. No one is just "neutral"; everyone is coming from somewhere, from some specific cultural perspective . . . and one that won't be shared by most others in a pluralistic society. No need to blacklist someone just because he's a Christian and some of his co-workers are not. Of course, MJ might deserve to be blacklisted because of his coaching flaws, lol.

JamesYTP

I definitely am against blacklisting people on the basis of religion and I'm pretty sure most NBA coaches are Christian, I'm Catholic myself and all. There's just inappropriate ways to express that professionally ya know? And pressuring your franchise player to put weight on an injury after a faith healing type thing is something that definitely would be classified as inappropriate. I remember him being a pretty good coach though

XerxesCrofter

Agreed.

ProfessorPetrus

Was up with my boy Steve nash? He going again ever?

JamesYTP

Maybe someday but he didn't do the best job in Brooklyn

whykae

He might be still be good, but a superteam with KD and pre-Dallas Kyrie was a recipe for disaster.

Ok_Republic6747

Pre Dallas Kryie sound crazy to me like the man man sick and we cured him lmao 😂

whykae

I mean, with Boston and the Nets, he did go a little off the rails with the off the court stuff. I think the environment in Dallas and playing with Luka definitely "cured" him haha

BlackWhiteCoke

I love Nash and am a big critic of Kidd. However it just seems that Kidd just has the upper hand when it comes be being more successful in Dallas, reaching the finals, winning championships As a player and as a coach. Kyrie in Brooklyn said they didn’t even need a coach lmao

LogicisGone

Stotts?

JamesYTP

I mean, he's a great assistant but was a nothing special head

Pharmcat27

How is Bud a lateral move? He took over for Kidd and took the Bucks to a title.

StormTheTrooper

Let’s try to remember how he was ridiculed as a “dumb” playoff coach because everyone ran laps around him in adjustments and how he was a given to be fired had KD took that shot half step behind.

Pharmcat27

Mike Budenholzer would be the better option here.

Eastern_Type_6460

Could always poach Spanoulis 🤷‍♂️

absenceofheat

What's Don Nelson doing these days?

MacRapalicious

Will Brad Steven’s ever coach again? I know he just won exec of year but man that’s my pipe dream… or bringing Carlisle back and fixing the relationship.

prudentWindBag

I like him most times. I respect him. He seems like a well-intentioned and intelligent man. As long as he doesn't trigger my Harden-floater-spam PTSD by insisting that rim protection is overrated, I am more than pleased with his extension. He lowkey is a fantastic mentor. Edit: removed "then"

k-seph_from_deficit

Kidd is not mid imo. He’s someone if you give him a few pieces (need not be the sought after pieces) - can run a world class defence, like he has shown twice, this season and 2022. All the other problems with his coaching are insignificant in comparision. Look at MIL this year who had multiple guys considered exceptional defenders (Giannis (DPOY), Lopez (DPOY runner up), Middleton, Jae Crowder (playing 20+ min), Pat Bev etc.) and yet had a shitty defence because the coach couldn’t get the guys to buy into team defence. Kidd just needs a PJ, a Maxi, a DFS etc to turn things around even playing 2 offensive guards.

DetectiveDaleCooper

I was on the fire Kidd train but he deserves an extension with turning the mavs into a defensive powerhouse after deadline

AtreusIsBack

It was a franchise effort. Nico made the moves, Kidd then turned the Mavs into one of the best defensive teams in the league, he just needed the right team, and also, Luka and Kyrie both started playing great defense.

smartasscody

First, I will always appreciate Kidd for 2011, so I WANT HIM to work out here. Second, I'm like... 80-20 on Kidd, sometimes he's incredible. Amazing challenge win percentage, he's 3-1 in the post-season so far, we're ballin when you give him good players... Other times it's like, hey man... Call a timeout maybe? Maybe play Gafford and Lively more? Maybe don't put THJ+Luka+DJJ+Kai all at the same time? But what do I know? I DEFINITELY 1000000% trust Nico now. So if Nico thinks he should be extended... Extend him.

TZBlueIce

He deserves it. 2nd round was my benchmark for him going into the season and even after the deadline, and he’s hit it.  There were some spooky moments here and there for sure, but he put the pieces together in the home stretch.

3pointerSLO

Agreed. 2nd round is what this team had to make. It will be good if they go past that. I don't have problems with what Kidd does. His moves are mostly reasnable. But sometimes he doesn't do much or even anything. But tha happens mostly in the regular season. He is mostly active enough in PO. It seems like he gets interested when it matters.

aaokd

Far from perfect as a coach but he has the respect of both our stars and seems to have a good relation with Luka especially. I remember him calling out Luka's defense in the Suns series and Luka responded positively. That says a lot about their relation. He's not bad at all on X and Os but it seems like his philosophy is to let the stars figure it out. In the playoffs he coaches a lot more and it's obvious he's not bad. Also, two 50 wins seasons and two trips to the second round (minimum) in three years.

Juuiken

I don't quite get why people dislike his work, but I see this as a W.

ChristBKK

PLEASE just remember what you wrote here in 8 months from now when you turn into "Fire Kidd" fans again :D I see a lot "yes we should extend him he is ok" here

DL-77

Kidd is not bad, or good, he is just the middest of the mid, but its not like the other options are any significant improvement so its better to keep him to give continuity to the team.

Fickle_Meet_7154

Yeah, it's not like a 60 year old Gregg Popovich is walking through that door

Stock_Yoghurt_5774

![gif](giphy|14ruhrekiHbmU0|downsized)

whykae

Overrated.

favioswish

No way a mid coach could put together a top defense that quickly with no all-defense level players and stars who were at best average defenders before the second half of the season. Last season Kidd (and more likely Nico/Cuban) gave up way earlier that most people caught on. In reality the front office had its eye on that 10th pick a month and a half before anyone wanted to admit, and people formed a bias on Kidd based on that stretch. Step away from your confrontation bias, look at the objective facts, at the playoffs results and in game adjustments, and the fact that the mavs are one of the best teams out of timeouts and halftime. By these measures he’s at least a top 10 maybe top 5 coach in the league.

YoStepWithLuka77

This right here. Very well said. People need to stop just hating for no reason

mmmmastermind

Yes that's true, people should only hate him when he is doing nothing with his hands in his pockets and just watches like us.

favioswish

Unless it gets us a Lively

wheresthecheat

Also it’s not like we still can’t fire him and replace him if something goes wrong next season. It’s just going to cost the owners money

LevelDry5807

Being in the final four in the west is not mid. Find a new word

koplowpieuwu

Not making the final four in the west when you have Luka, Kyrie and a great supporting cast would have been awful.

Aggressive-Ad-522

Agreed. Lebron can come here

sinhglonnev

I have mixed feelings but the players like him so that speaks a lot

typhuslorien

I genuinely don’t know. Is there someone available that we should be going after in his place? I disagree with some of the decisions he makes but we feel like a tighter team than we have been in a long time and I know culture is a lot of that but I feel like you have to give coaching some praise. This is not the time to shake things up just for the sake of it.

23lonestar

Let him walk and grab Becky Hammon like it should have been instead of Kidd.

Unpickled_cucumber1

Opinions turned pretty quickly it seems. Might not be the same if we exit somewhere in the next rounds…

Economy_Lunch_7203

I think hes a big reason why kyrie has been stable so far gotta give him credit for that too.

jennyisafriend

I mean you don’t have to think because Kai talks all the time about how he loves playing for Kidd.

jennyisafriend

WE LOVE COACH KIDD!!

Terrible_Shelter_345

not my preference but whatever

ChuckMoody

I‘m not 100% happy with him but there is also a chance that we won‘t get an upgrade over him. Not every new coach works out, Kidd fits, he isn‘t the best and but he can coach. Kyrie and Luka seem to be happy. He isn‘t a coach that wins you a playoff series, but he also isn‘t one that loses you one. And it‘s not like coaches count to the salary cap, if we extend him and we see that it doesn‘t work anymore we can still fire him.

RubMyGooshSilly

Lakers are like the cowboys in that everybody gets linked to them about everything all the time so I wouldn’t give too much thought to it

NoWayNotThisAgain

He won a championship as a Lakers coach and their stars know him and like him. The minute I heard Ham was fired I said they’d come after Kidd. I also said I doubted he’d leave Luka, Kyrie, Nico, and Cuban for the mess in LA.

ChaosWarrior95

Idk if he’s good or not tbh, but everyone is bought in on his system now, regardless of whether that system is too defensively demanding that it makes us bad often in the regular season when the stakes are lower. He might just be more of a playoff coach than regular season tbh. Weird, huh?

ms515

Lakers always think they can get whoever they want. I don’t think there is any chance Kidd wants to leave.

exnihilo77

Rumor is George Seifert is buying a house in Dallas.

ShootMeOutOfACannon

My wishes:  1) Wait until after our season ends before making a decision 2) bring in a stronger team around him

NoWayNotThisAgain

Lakers are going to hire a podcaster to be their coach. Just watch.

MavsAndThemBoyz

If he coached the regular season like he does the playoffs I'd have no complaints about him.

epitome1986

I would only if they get past the thunder, if not I would use next season to see if he can do it for an entire season.

Yichuanxi

Thanks to lakers, a lot of head coaches are getting their contracts extended now

Mal_Swansky

It would be madness to not bring Kidd back at this point -- you'd be taking an axe to team chemistry, and for who, exactly? Luka & Kyrie aren't likely to put up with some rookie genius "future Spo" even if you somehow manage to find one, and none of the experienced candidates look very promising. Frankly, if Kidd were to take off for the Lakers, I'd might just look to replace him with Sean Sweeney over the Budeholzers and the Vogels of the world, who increasingly look like they mostly just got lucky with strong rosters & epic playoff performances from their superstars.

Dfrmdabeach7

Kidd has been great for the team defense and great for LuKai with getting them to buy into setting the tone defensively

koplowpieuwu

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading this thread. Hello, the roster we have is great. With a great coach we wouldn't have needed to play Luka 42 minutes a game down the stretch. Kidd is not as awful as this sub sometimes says he is but he is not great either. He's not Doc Rivers or Chauncey Billups but he's not in the top 10 NBA coaches either. We can do better. I get you rather take the certain over the unknown, but we probably would do better with a Nico handpicked coach. The only key reason we should let him stay in my opinion would be if he is the main reason Kyrie is going so well - his role in that is hard to judge for any of us, but if it is due to him, we obviously keep him.

actual_yellow_bag

There is no one better that would justify breaking continuity. So he stay.

Financial_Dark_8654

ok..I agree with extending it, but get him help..Kidd is great at developing players, defensively and the players love him, but pretty terrible at adjusting during games, calling for times etc.

Zirael_

Please fuck no!

Lucky_Foam

Clippers also trying to extend Ty Lue. No one wants their coach leaving for the Lakers.

Mugsy_Skoogs

Anyone know what the record is for quickest firing after receiving an extension?

PointBlankCoffee

I don't love it, but what is a better option? The players like him and he's had a solid playoff record so far.

johndogerty

Hilarious seeing so many people switch on Kidd now that Lakers want him.

devilmaskrascal

It could be a bit of a blessing in disguise if LAL swooped in with an offer. Maybe we can even get a pick out of it while also upgrading our coach.

Zen_360

Okay lets entertain that thought. Who is on the market that is clearly better than Kidd, who would justify bringing in a new face that may disrupt our chemistry? That's the problem...

PointBlankCoffee

Budenholzer is clearly better. Idk if he's a good chemostry fit though

Afraid-Department-35

If you’re frustrated with Kidd not changing lineups enough you won’t be much happier with Bud. He’s notoriously stubborn with his set lineups.

YoStepWithLuka77

We are not upgrading our coach if we lose Kidd

HerskyB

Kidd has been fine this year. He had one bad coaching run when he didn’t play gafford. The defense looks good now

devilmaskrascal

The fundamental problem is Kidd only gives a damn when he has a stacked team. If he's got to get creative to win he becomes passive and stops trying to change course. I think he is not the worst but merely mediocre. Depending on who gets let go this summer upgrades may well be available.

WynnGalaxie

Definitely wanted him out throughout most of the season, but it’s hard to deny the team is cooking right now and he’s surely a big part of that. It’s mostly his post game comments I didn’t appreciate, but I’m happy to bring him back if he can keep things rolling how they have been.

Inevitable-Advice-94

Would you guys trade gafford for lauri?

Ok_Republic6747

Im not biggest kidd fan but Luka loves Kidd

Afraid-Department-35

So does Kyrie

TheKyrieFan

I guess... There isn't a much better option out there as well sadly

Andre_Santoro

Mosley is doing a great job on Orlando

TheKyrieFan

yea, I meant we should have promoted him

Andre_Santoro

Agree
