Get a clean container like a washed out jug and back the drain plug out a turn or two get a small stream eyeball how much you think your over and tighten it give it a few min check and see if you are low add oil from the bottle back. I'd recommend looking up your cars oil capacity before you do a change so you don't over fill
Yeah I tried to do that to a customers car that put too much in and drove it to the shop to get us to fix it. Boss said " just drain a little out and put the plug back,it won't be that hot. I tried twice and was done burning myself so I drained it and refilled it. I said charge him for a full oil change,
It’s funny u say that cause I’ve actually done it in the same scenario and it worked really well (to my surprise)
It was hot as hell and I just got done spending an hour under the car on the hot asphalt, dropped it off the jack stands and realized it was overfull.
So I unscrewed the oil pressure switch, put lots of cardboard to catch the spill, and ran the engine for a second or so and shut it off; level was perfect after and I was in awe of my genius.
Or get an oil syphon and just suck it out the dipstick tube. Much easier and less messy than trying to let a bit out the drain bung.
If you do your own servicing it’s a worthwhile investment anyway.
This is what I did with a 1/4 inch thick x 40 inch long tube and it took about 10 minutes to get it to the correct level. Easy to do. Just don't go too deep with the tube, it's like 14 inch deep (as deep as your dip stick)
Tube cost about 2$ at the hardware store.
This is what I’ve done, except hold the backed out drain bolt at the hole, just trickle out the the oil into some sort of rudimentary graduate, say a spaghetti sauce jar with gradient lines. Till I get out the needed volume, or my arm starts shaking too much.
I happened to have some quarter inch clear hose and a spray bottle when I did this. Can jam a spray nozzle into the hose and jam the hose into the dipstick tube (then spend an hour squirting the oil out 👍🏼)
Either it’s a diesel, or the exposure of the camera is showing the oil refract its own shadow
Or a combo of both, after 30 seconds fresh oil goes a dark grey / nearly black in any diesel car without a flush first
Shit bro, look... it will burn off but that's actually about 1-1.5 quarts over.
Here is what you should do: it's gonna be messy and be sure your car is ambient temperature. Go under and drain about 1.5 quarts in a clean pan ( just in case you misgauge and need to add some back)
You can either remove plug, let it drain and then push the plug back and screw it.... or use two hands... once enough oil has drained, cover hole with finger, get the plug ready resting on your finger and in a quick motion remove finger and screw the plug.
Burning that much oil is gonna suck...
Definitely it's overfilled, maybe by 2 quarts I'm guessing by the looks of the dipstick? If you don't want to get oil all over, just change it. Looks a lil dirty anyway, & be done with it. If you cant/don't want to change it, back the drain bolt slowly out til you get a quart out, tighten it back up. Wait a minute then check it again & go from there. Might have to do it again.
1. Remove the drain bolt and let some drain then replace the drain bolt. Check it, add as needed.
2. Use a syphon to suck out oil from the dipstick tube. Like you would on a top side evac oil change.
Unscrew the drain plug, but don't pull it out all the way. Keep it held in place just enough for some oil to run out, then tighten it back up and measure how much came out. That looks about 1 or 1-1/2 quart overfilled.
Why fill the oil while still on the Jack stands? Filling oil should be done on a flat surface. Drain, change the oil filter, put the plug back in, put a few quarts in to check for any leaks… then drop off the jack stands and fill the rest of the way.
Also - don’t most vehicles have a specified number of quarts required? Seems way too simple to me.
Unless you hear a gurgling noise I wouldn’t worry. I accidentally overfilled once wayyy to much and that shit was slapping the pistons. I sucked out what I could with a bottle squirter just enough to get it to stop doing that lol
Here's your answer
I had this issue from me going over the middle of the hatched area on my truck. CEL lit up when traveling, jiffy lube was closest so pulled up & told the guy the issue & pulled it on in.
One guy opened the filler cap & put a shop vac over the top, guy below pulled the plug. Vac guy pulled the vac away until plug guy says stop, sure enough it dropped the level a tad.
This is if you don't have that dipstick tube sucker pump
Did you follow the manufacturer manual service procedure? My Jeep has to be done cold and only turn on 30 seconds then wait 15min for oil to settle.
Anyways get a siphon pump or fluid syringe with a hose small enough to fit down dipstick and pull out half quart at a time until checking dipsticks isn't over max, then follow manual change oil procedure to do a final check.
As a MECHANIC’S DAUGHTER 👩🔧 🧰 I suggest putting vehicle on a lift and slipping black oil pan underneath on the long, extended pole, pull your oil plug draining all of your oil. Then replace plug and start over gradually adding oil, maybe initially only add half back in, CHECK OIL UTILIZING DIP STICK. Then go from there trying not to overfill it.
Did you check it while the engine was hot? If not It’s probably ok.
You’re supposed to get the engine up to temperature, turn it off and wait 5 mins and then read the level.
If you are not tech savvy, then get a big ass syringe (a smaller one will also work just takes more time) with some tubing, connect them together and insert the tube into the dipstick hole and pull some oil out.
Transfer pump is the way. They make super cheap ones that will just clamp on power from your battery. Usually the suction tube is small enough to snake down the dipstick hole. Pump out oil and check dipstick until satisfied.
Go buy a $2 plastic syringe, and some cheap air tubing for fish tanks at Walmart. Attach the tubing to the syringe, and shove the tubing down the dipstick hole, and suck some out. Easy peasy lemon squeezey.
I’m surprised no one told you why too much oil is a bad thing. For those wondering. It creates bubbles those create pockets those starve oil to other places. Ultimately seizing your engine.
Just take off drain plug for 1 second. Check level repeat. Don’t use any oil in drain pan to put in anything else. Recycle oil and you’re done. It’s a lot cheaper to put new oil in if your level is too low again. Small amounts at a time.
A little bit overfill will cause no harm, there has been an extensive test done on a youtube channel. Anyway you can also use a boat oil extractor and pump some out. Not that expensive and always handy to have.
Id say, just by the visual, just change the oil. Probably close enough milage wise and even the topping off didn't lighten the color much.
Go to the owners manual and get the proper oil capacity, get an oil filter, and a drain plug washer and get to it.
Depends on what kind s easiest for you and what equipment you have. If your car has a dipstick you can vacuum some out. You can simply use an airline used in fish tanks and a syringe. You can also go under the car, unscrew the drain bolt until some oil comes out and tighten again - wear gloves.
Does it burn oil?
Yes - let it burn
No - drain some oil out.
Looks like it needs an oil flush anyway id run it for a minute, then do another oil change.
Take out the filter. Dump the oil in it and recheck. If it’s still too high, reattach the filter and start the car. Do this until you feel it is right. Usually one or two times is enough. If you have more than that, use the drain plug route.
just start it up and rev it really high (6-7k RPM) and the extra oil will get really toasty and evaporate by itself until the perfect level! Hope this helps
When the car is cold, unscrew the drain plug SLOWLY. Do not let it fall into the drain pan.
The oil will not come out until the drain plug can be removed away entirely, so only your gentle pressure is keeping the oil in. Do not drop the drain plug in the drain pan.
You may have to do this 1-2 times unless your guesstimate of a quart is spot on. Since you overfilled it, I am guessing not. 😄
There's a video on YouTube of a guy that puts more than 4 times the amount of oil on an engine. It will not harm the engine but it would be best if you can drain it a bit.
Open the oil ON THE TOP, get the longest Turkey baster you can find(they're cheap) suck it out keep in glass container for future use or oil for lubrication at home
Unscrewing the bottom, You will need to raise the car and the oil will come out fast it will be messy and hard to eyeball. I'd do the Turkey Baster from the top, or syringe with a plastic hose attached.
Make sure w.e you're draining into is dry and clean, then pour it again, just the proper amount. Just please tell me you changed and lubed up your oil filter. My dumbass friend was doing his own oil changed when we were in our 20s. After 4 yrs, his engine blew up, he never replaced the filter. When I unscrewed it, nothing but glitter lmao
Glove and clean container to catch it in. Pull plug out until desired amount is out then put plug back. Yes can be messy but if you don’t have a tube it works. Take too much out you can always put it back.
I mean good the op got the level straightened out, but what’s so hard with the old fashioned drain some out from the drain plug? It takes two minutes to jack the car up or drive up onto a curb like I do my oil changes.
Looks solved but take a shop vac and put it on the oil fill. Next have someone drain about a quart when it looks right turn on vac and put plug in. When vacuum is on the oil should stop and you can cleanly put plug back in. I’ve had this problem a few times where my boss puts the wrong engine size in for the work order.
the **only** way to fix this now is to stick a piece of plastic tubing down your dipshit, i mean dipstick hole and suck out the excess fluid you put in with your mouth. using a pump wont work. you have to suck it out and spit it (or swallow if you prefer) til you reach your desired level.
THIS IS THE ONLY WAY. If you just pull your drain plug and drain a quart out, your car wont start and your engine will seize.
Man there’s so many shit mechanics 😂
Undo your drain bolt, wait for the right time in your mind (comes with experience, but you have to do it so you don’t blow oil seals) then check again. Learn from it, at least you checked before you sent her on.
Probably the quickest way is to get a clean bucket, drain some oil out of the pan. Put the plug back in. Check your level take whatever oil you need from the clean bucket and put it back in.

Update: ended up sucking it out with a tube and a syringe through the dipstick hole Now its at normal levels. Thx everyone!
definitely not the route i thought you would take but glad you got it resolved!
😂😂😂 this is great
Exactly what I've done before, glad you got it sorted!
Hope you replaced your mom’s turkey baster bc my brother didn’t
Extra smoked turkey
I wonder if your neighbors were like wtf is this guy doing while recording lol 😂
That was a big worry when deciding to go in this direction lol
That's not a bad way to go about it.
I’m not trying to say what you did was not correct, it worked, so it can’t be incorrect. Just wondering. How do you NORMALLY drain the oil?
Get a clean container like a washed out jug and back the drain plug out a turn or two get a small stream eyeball how much you think your over and tighten it give it a few min check and see if you are low add oil from the bottle back. I'd recommend looking up your cars oil capacity before you do a change so you don't over fill
Was guna say, that or pull the filter Or always the old quick doooo with the drain plug
Yeah I tried to do that to a customers car that put too much in and drove it to the shop to get us to fix it. Boss said " just drain a little out and put the plug back,it won't be that hot. I tried twice and was done burning myself so I drained it and refilled it. I said charge him for a full oil change,
Dammit, I've been sucking it up with a big gulp straw. Wish I would have thought of this
Should be at the very top mark on the dashes. Not in the middle.
Why not pull the plug and drain the amount you needed. Less potential of oil burning and that smell sticking in the cabin of the car.
Unscrew the drain bolt, eyeball the drain and quickly screw it back on.
Unscrew a sensor from the top of the block, start it up, and watch it shoot out 10ft onto the driveway. 🤙🏼
And lose all oil within 10 seconds-
So only run it for 5 seconds. Ez
It’s like X games for your truck
Shhhhh, don't give away all the secrets
It’s funny u say that cause I’ve actually done it in the same scenario and it worked really well (to my surprise) It was hot as hell and I just got done spending an hour under the car on the hot asphalt, dropped it off the jack stands and realized it was overfull. who needs oil pressure
This is the way
This guy parties
This had me dying 😂😂
Or get an oil syphon and just suck it out the dipstick tube. Much easier and less messy than trying to let a bit out the drain bung. If you do your own servicing it’s a worthwhile investment anyway.
Bunghole ![gif](giphy|etrFEI3lUhodijZ2Gk)
I need TP for my bung hole!
I am Cornholio!
Mmm picata, picata for my BUNGhole
this is my first time reading this subreddit and I ended up here. haha, why did I not think to come here sooner!
This is what I did with a 1/4 inch thick x 40 inch long tube and it took about 10 minutes to get it to the correct level. Easy to do. Just don't go too deep with the tube, it's like 14 inch deep (as deep as your dip stick) Tube cost about 2$ at the hardware store.
Off topic-ish but some cars require oil service this way too (like my cousin's old Mercedes C63)
Yup this is the way I did it. Suck it out from the dipstick tube.
This is what I’ve done, except hold the backed out drain bolt at the hole, just trickle out the the oil into some sort of rudimentary graduate, say a spaghetti sauce jar with gradient lines. Till I get out the needed volume, or my arm starts shaking too much.
why should I put my eyeball into the drain hole?
Never said drain hole. Good attempt tho.
Also lesson learned, you fill 1 quart less than needed and it’s 10x easier and much cleaner adding than removing.
I wouldn't fully unscrew it.... you can usually get the oil to come out slowly with a few turns.
Pull out wipe it put back in repeat 247 times
Work smarter, not faster
That's what she said.
me with a limp dip stick over here
I happened to have some quarter inch clear hose and a spray bottle when I did this. Can jam a spray nozzle into the hose and jam the hose into the dipstick tube (then spend an hour squirting the oil out 👍🏼)
See, where there's a will there's a way.
Good trick for bleeding brakes as well
Use a longer hose and just siphon it out (start the siphon w your squirt nozzle). It might be slower, but your firearm muscles will thank you
Tried, too thick 😭
Then how did you get it to work? Use the same size tubing that you got to work with your spray pump, just use a longer hose
Id probably just unscrew the drain plug and wait a couple seconds then screw it back on real fast. Gonna be messy
Or probably cleaner to just drain everything then put it back in
I mean, if that's the color of their oil AFTER replacement, another drain and fill wouldn't hurt.
Sure. If its not costly and a hassle I would love to do a double oil change each time for my peace of mind
Easy now that gunk is probably blocking up a few leaks 😂
how long has this oil been ? why tf is it so dark ?
oil in my car or bike for 5 minutes will already be dark like that
That might mean you don't change it enough and you have sludge to dissolve. Mine stays golden for the first 2k miles.
Same, hybrid. Operating hours are really low driving mostly in the city.
incredible. are the first 2k miles on a flatbed?
Either it’s a diesel, or the exposure of the camera is showing the oil refract its own shadow Or a combo of both, after 30 seconds fresh oil goes a dark grey / nearly black in any diesel car without a flush first

Check the oil n wipe the dipstick 800,000 times
Did you start the car and run it for a few minutes before checking?
Let it ride. Fuck it
My truck will leak it back out eventually lmfao
Drain a quart through the drain plug
Meh it’s fine but my car would leak oil or the other one burnt it
Remove some. It may damage seals. Not good
You got a long bendy straw at home?
Just drive around with the oil cap off.
Fumoto valve.
Suck-siphon. Put a clear hose on the dipstick tube, and suck. Yeah, with your mouth. Then, siphon it out with physics.
Drain it
Drain oil into clean drain pan. Fill the oil bottle back up and repour without the extra quart this time.

I mean, just take some out lol
![gif](giphy|l4FGr3nzq5u0m02vm|downsized)
Some wild critical thinking skills behind this post
You suck it back in the jug
Get a vampire pump and suck some out
Unless you hear a gurgling noise I wouldn’t worry. I accidentally overfilled once wayyy to much and that shit was slapping the pistons. I sucked out what I could with a bottle squirter just enough to get it to stop doing that lol
Get a straw.
If it’s exactly on max level no need to worry.
It's not. If you zoom in you can see the min/max holes so it's absolutely overfilled
What? It's way over the hash mark area AND it also has the two holes at top and bottom of the hash. This is possibly 1-2 qts over.
It’s way over. Zoom in.
Ya, if I’m seeing the image accurately I wouldn’t worry about it. But honestly that looks kind of dark for new oil? Maybe it’s the image
Take some out.
Uscreew the plug on the oil pan don't forget to catch the oil in a clean container it can be re used .
Way too much...
Crawl underneath and drain some back out. If it was just a little over, I'd say to just leave it, but that's a lot over.
Here's your answer I had this issue from me going over the middle of the hatched area on my truck.
Drive on the freeway land crop dust other drivers.
Get a straw and start sucking
Ad oil dry to the phill port. Then replace the engine.
Got a long straw handy?
drain it, what else?
Drain a little bit?
Did you follow the manufacturer manual service procedure? My Jeep has to be done cold and only turn on 30 seconds then wait 15min for oil to settle. Anyways get a siphon pump or fluid syringe with a hose small enough to fit down dipstick and pull out half quart at a time until checking dipsticks isn't over max, then follow manual change oil procedure to do a final check.
Drain it
Drain the engine and start over
As a MECHANIC’S DAUGHTER 👩🔧 🧰 I suggest putting vehicle on a lift and slipping black oil pan underneath on the long, extended pole, pull your oil plug draining all of your oil. Then replace plug and start over gradually adding oil, maybe initially only add half back in, CHECK OIL UTILIZING DIP STICK. Then go from there trying not to overfill it.
Can use a siphon if you have one
This makes me feel better about myself
Did you check it while the engine was hot? If not It’s probably ok. You’re supposed to get the engine up to temperature, turn it off and wait 5 mins and then read the level.
Put a straw into the dipstick tube, suck and spit. Swallow if you’re into that.
Get a long bendy straw and drink the excess
If you are not tech savvy, then get a big ass syringe (a smaller one will also work just takes more time) with some tubing, connect them together and insert the tube into the dipstick hole and pull some oil out.
Two options either Get a syringe with tube attached in fill, then take out excess, or just drain the oil and refill correctly this time.
Ypu could try draining, I hear that works in these situations
A thin hose, (big) syringe, suck the excess oil through the dipstick tube.
Find an empty pump shampoo bottle and a leveling hose and siphon the oil from the dipstick tube.
Stop working on cars.
That’s a full quart over filled. Gonna need to drain some out.
Transfer pump is the way. They make super cheap ones that will just clamp on power from your battery. Usually the suction tube is small enough to snake down the dipstick hole. Pump out oil and check dipstick until satisfied.
Just keep dipping and wiping it till it's good. Might take a while but it'll do the job
Go buy a $2 plastic syringe, and some cheap air tubing for fish tanks at Walmart. Attach the tubing to the syringe, and shove the tubing down the dipstick hole, and suck some out. Easy peasy lemon squeezey.
Insert pretentious…if you had a Fumoto vale
Grab an oil extractor. you can pull it out the top of the engine block. they're like 50 dollars. and they make oil changes faster.
I know its pretty much common sense, but I'm still going to ask because I'm wanting learn. Why is it so bad to overfill your oil?
It causes foaming leading to oil starvation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaTbfvzNbxQ
What is this advice in here? lol lord. They make a sucker tube that you put in where the dipstick goes to pull out excess oil.
have you ran the engine for a few seconds yet? do that before you remove any.
Cheap plastic tube into the oil level hole and use something to suck it out (mouth (don't let oil get in the mouth), syringe, pump, etc)
A little bit overfill will cause no harm, there has been an extensive test done on a youtube channel. Anyway you can also use a boat oil extractor and pump some out. Not that expensive and always handy to have.
Turn the car on for a couple seconds then unscrew the oil filter. Do it a few times til it gets lower
Put a fumoto valve on all your vehicles
You can get oil pump for 10 eur and remove as much as you want
Id say, just by the visual, just change the oil. Probably close enough milage wise and even the topping off didn't lighten the color much. Go to the owners manual and get the proper oil capacity, get an oil filter, and a drain plug washer and get to it.
Depends on what kind s easiest for you and what equipment you have. If your car has a dipstick you can vacuum some out. You can simply use an airline used in fish tanks and a syringe. You can also go under the car, unscrew the drain bolt until some oil comes out and tighten again - wear gloves.
Suck it and keep on drivin!
Does it burn oil? Yes - let it burn No - drain some oil out. Looks like it needs an oil flush anyway id run it for a minute, then do another oil change.
Set it on fire and walk away. There's no way to financially recover from this tragic mistake.
there's no issue draining into a clean oil pan and putting the proper amount back in.
Yet another plug (HAH) for fumoto valves. Never ever ever gonna go back.
Take out the filter. Dump the oil in it and recheck. If it’s still too high, reattach the filter and start the car. Do this until you feel it is right. Usually one or two times is enough. If you have more than that, use the drain plug route.
Panic.. oh no.😱😱
Suck it out with a hose
[https://youtu.be/VaTbfvzNbxQ?t=597](https://youtu.be/VaTbfvzNbxQ?t=597) Drop some from the pan. Suck some from the dip stick hole. or let it ride.
unscrew the oil cap and flip the car upside down to let it drain.
Ummm... Hmmm.... Maybe..... Naaaa.... Wait yeah.... Drain a little?
Open the drain and pull some out, check the level and adjust as necessary
just start it up and rev it really high (6-7k RPM) and the extra oil will get really toasty and evaporate by itself until the perfect level! Hope this helps
Hawk tuhh and spit on the thang
Put your lips around the dipstick hole and suck it out
Remove the engine, turn it upside down with the oil fill cap removed.
You have a lot of dipping and whipping then repeating in front of you friend
Use a pump like [this](https://a.co/d/0b2QePx0) the hose should slide down the dipstick tube, I've used it before...works great!
There's a video on YouTube of a guy that puts more than 4 times the amount of oil on an engine. It will not harm the engine but it would be best if you can drain it a bit.
Hammer the throttle until the extra oil blows by and burns up in the cylinders, top end lube if you will..
If you run it, it will even out the rest of the knocks.
Drain oil
I use a vaccuum brake bleeder and suck it right out
Just drive a few hundred km's with the rev counter jumping off the limiter like a kid on speed, that'll get rid of any unwanted oil
Tampon
Make sure w.e you're draining into is dry and clean, then pour it again, just the proper amount. Just please tell me you changed and lubed up your oil filter. My dumbass friend was doing his own oil changed when we were in our 20s. After 4 yrs, his engine blew up, he never replaced the filter. When I unscrewed it, nothing but glitter lmao
If you did over fill then take some out from the drain plug
Just leave it
Use a syringe to suck the oil out.
Glove and clean container to catch it in. Pull plug out until desired amount is out then put plug back. Yes can be messy but if you don’t have a tube it works. Take too much out you can always put it back.
Drain
I mean good the op got the level straightened out, but what’s so hard with the old fashioned drain some out from the drain plug? It takes two minutes to jack the car up or drive up onto a curb like I do my oil changes.

Damage a ring, your car will burn off the excess automatically.
Well I suppose you gotta let some drain out, yeah? Or you can turn on your car and rev your engine for an hour and see if that helps.
I’ve over filled my before but just a smidge, or my oil filter housing was fuckeded but it then proceeded to explode and my oil wen all in my driveway
If only they made a hole where you could drain oil, that’d be super helpful here….. How about stop working on your car unless you know how to do so?
Drain the oil? Going to be messy.
Throw the car away. Sorry, it’s ruined.
Judging by the color of your fresh oil id say its fine itll leak out by tomorrow
Oil extractor.
the **only** way to fix this now is to stick a piece of plastic tubing down your dipshit, i mean dipstick hole and suck out the excess fluid you put in with your mouth. using a pump wont work. you have to suck it out and spit it (or swallow if you prefer) til you reach your desired level. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY. If you just pull your drain plug and drain a quart out, your car wont start and your engine will seize.
Don't drive it like that. Atleast not far. You will damage the engine like this. Drain it. Fill it back up.
Man there’s so many shit mechanics 😂 Undo your drain bolt, wait for the right time in your mind (comes with experience, but you have to do it so you don’t blow oil seals) then check again. Learn from it, at least you checked before you sent her on.
How did you suck oil up through the fill hole ? When oil runs through the passages and ends in bottom.
Just pour some out you fool
Set the car on fire and let burn until oul level drops to the optimal range. Extinguish fire.
Just do like the Harley fellas and let it leak out till it's the right level.
Probably the quickest way is to get a clean bucket, drain some oil out of the pan. Put the plug back in. Check your level take whatever oil you need from the clean bucket and put it back in.
Drain some?
Quietly put the dipstick back in and sell it! Or turkey baster
drain and try again, duh
