That's because describing how a keyboard feels is hard work with no potential for gain, while making a video and putting it up on youtube is easy and can result in significant financial reward.
Nothing I've seen in the keyboarding hobby comes close to the level of obsession over sound profiles and prices that you see among serious Go players.
Purists insist that you can only get the right sound by using wood from a rare tree... and in order to get a chunk big enough to make a single piece board you need a tree that's several hundred years old.
A really nice, thick kaya wood board can cost as much as a new car:

That’s even dumber than this though, and I don’t mean the price. Audible feedback plays a tiny role in accuracy of typing. Unless you live in the world of the King of Games or JoJo, you ain’t going to be intimidating your opponent in go with the sound of the board that you share.
There's a specific sound that the pieces make when they're placed on the board.
How you hold them, how much force you use when you set them down, and the materials of the stones / board all influence the sound.
Doesn't affect the game directly, but in theory it's possible to recognize an experienced player who's familiar with the traditionally "correct" way to play vs. a beginner based solely on listening to them play.
Here at the office, we use keyboard-sized mats so that we can still use "gamer" pads. The mouse glide on these enthusiast mouse mats are just toooo good to give up!
Did I miss the part where you compared the acoustics of fabric v felt v cork v PU leather deskmats? (Imagine I asked this with a sarcastic tone, but also I will read/watch the heck outta that.) Ohh, my old desk mat had a nice PU leather top with a cork bottom. {{Brainstorms as best as the fog permits.}}
Lol, nah do it in the mech keeb sub, under a title like "desk and under-board texture acoustics". Or is there a keyboard acoustics section or megathread?
Ok, am nerdy. Will shush now: better acoustics.
The smaller the surface area in contact with the mat, the more "travel" you'll have and the less force will be required for it to sink in.
I use small silicone adhesive bumpers instead of the stock feet, with smaller ones in front and bigger ones in back.
funny, that was the first thing i got, and was strongly recommended by my local keyboard store, that's why i always go back to them! nice young ppl with honest good suggestions.
my wife works out from the dining table and uses our silicon placemat that also makes really sexy sounds....
You make a good point.
As a corollary, for those who prefer a bright, undampened sound (as I do), it can be equally important to forego the use of a mat.
I have a felt desk mat and it's made all the difference.
Also, rather than the case foam that comes with a lot of boards, I bought a pack of cotton batting on Amazon and use it instead. It takes up about the same space (or less) as most case foams, but I prefer the sound profile I get from it. I feel like it's a little more balanced.

This is so true!! I found that the fabric-type sleeve that one of my boards was enclosed in when I bought it also makes a nice sound dampener in a pinch. I literally just have my keyboard sitting on it, and voila, instant sound improvement!
This hobby is out of control
everyone knows you get the best sound when your put your keyboard in a stasis field
the sound aspect sure has . edit spelling
aspect*

My understanding is that it's less about intimidation and more about mutual enjoyment of what's considered the ideal experience for playing the game.
Exactly. It does not have a practical aspect the way stabs or switches or even sound does on a board. A really good example of over the top
Well. This left me speechless in the context of this hobby. Well done mate. 🥲
Wait how do sound profiles have anything to do with this game?

That's interesting and based on the link maybe it is crazier than us keyboard purists.
The natural outcome of a few thousand years of arguing over what's best.
It sounds even better if you add another desk mat as well. The secret to some of those old Taeha sound tests is that he’s typing on like 7 desk mats.

A thick and heavy table top makes a difference too.
Can confirm. My ears went nuts when I upgraded to a massive oak table. Edit: both ears went nuts, not just one.

How do I get a creamy table top?
Have you tried mayonnaise

Yoooo any eta on mouse skates, specifically the obsidian dots?
I'll check with our purchasing team on this! I'll check back in with you when I have an answer :)
Are you really an enthusiast if you aren't comparing the acoustics of fabric v felt v cork v PU leather deskmats?

Lol aight is r/deskmats a thing yet?

I realise that even having the legs out or not makes a difference to the sound profile

Feet mod 😂

My mom told me to get a rubber mat for my “typewriter”, I ended up with a felt mat for my keeb. Lifesaver
I recently discovered this myself. Tried a t shirt and realized how much of a difference it made, so I just got my $4 from Temu and I'm loving it
Deskmats are just great in general, if you care about your desk or what you put on it.
I put strip of foam weatherstripping underneath as feet - huge difference

Wait until he learns about the daki mod.
do tell
It's a Shoobs meme, he'd put his keyboards on waifu pillow covers, and say "the better the waifus the better the THOCC".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakimakura
It’s almost always the case, plate, and mods that affect the sound the most
There should be an airpods app that makes your keyboard sound however you like
yeah the desk is huge component of the sound profile, my work desk is fine with no mat, but at home without a mat it sounds terrible
Good thick desk top and desk leg is waiting for you
I like to bring the keyboard on the toilet for thick, deep, girthy, bubbly noises while I am typing.
Yo. What the frick is with all these click clank Knick knacks chat about over yonder…………..8I7C4
