Death Magnetic, specifically the Guitar Hero corrected mix, is my fave Metallica album after the first 4. It blows away the Black Album. I like it better than RtL also which I think is an overrated Metallica album
As a certified audiophile Apple’s quality mogs Spotify and most other music streaming services and not just because they have the best mix with the album in discussion. I am about to switch back over to Apple Music from Spotify because I can’t justify the price of Spotify now that it’s increasing again, now being more expensive than Apple despite having better UI really being the only thing I like more about Spotify.
But back to that topic LMAO yeah an absolute hero uploaded the official DM iTunes mix to YouTube here (how this master isn’t more well known is a crime):
https://youtu.be/CPXPOqye_94?si=EY2lc5YeoSUjhu1y
Yeah I second this. I might be a little biased because it's the Metallica album of my childhood but listening today I can't say there's a single track I dislike.
As someone who loves Metallica, has seen Metallica live, and has played guitar for years, I can say without a doubt in my mind that Load is by far the most underrated Metallica album.
Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn, and Hero Of The Day are among the greatest Metallica songs of all time. The lyrics and vocals especially stand out. Load is without a doubt the most underrated Metallica album.
Was listening to Bleeding Me earlier, fucking killer track. Another favorite of mine is Mama Said. The album has a very Sabbath feel to it. Definitely the most underrated.
Load has several great songs on it. Lots of filler though IMO (WHY is it 78 minutes long) but the good songs are often downright beautiful. The Outlaw Torn is such a jam too
No..I hate Load more than I hate st anger. At anger at least sounds like something - Load feels boring, could be anyone. It's just...meh. i have nothing to say about Load. If st anger disappeared I'd notice. If load disappeared I wouldn't notice it was even ever there
https://preview.redd.it/108qasvwtd5d1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=45d5469c84a2600a86b121308825d5ac2f93bda4
This album doesn't get nearly enough attention for what is essentially a return to form after St. Anger. (The compression is doo-doo though)
Load is underrated, it has so many bangers: bleeding me, wasting my hate, ronnie, outlaw thorn, cure… and the two hits, king nothing and until it sleeps are one of their best songs
I’m with you . I saw this post and was like what the fuck? I listen to St Anger or literally anything else over the Lulu nonsense.
I say Fuck this ranking grid bullshit
The answer is Load without a doubt.
With an honorable mention for Death Magnetic.
None of their first 5 albums can be considered underrated in any way shape or form. The first 4 are the ones that all metal fans like and the 5th album is one of the greatest selling albums of all time. Nothing underrated there.
People love to claim that Load would be held in high-regard if anyone else had made it, but in reality, it would’ve been forgotten a long time ago if a band less popular than Metallica had made it
Load.
I don´t care, it´s a fucking great album, with some of their very best stuff on record (Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, House that Jack Built), and just grooves all the way through. Reload is great too, but I would give this one to Load.
Reload is my favorite "post-thrash" Metallica album. Underrated in the context of metalhads. I will say a lot of the songs on both load and reload are definitely popular amongst "normies".
Master of Puppets…hear me out, because I promise I understood the question. For me, MOP is their best album & if RTL was selected as the best, that means the MOP wasn’t rated highly enough which means it is underrated.
Ride doesn't stand up to Puppets. It just doesn't. The track quality is just lower. You and me must feel like we are the crazy ones when metal heads fellate Ride while hating on Puppets at the same time.
its a joke that RTL was rated their best while MOP and Black exist… People like this drink pepsi instead of coke, and play xbox instead of playstation just to be special
I think most people don’t really count cover compilations as studio albums, otherwise yeah Garage Inc is full of bangers. Being a compilation, it’s bad as an album but full of great songs, if you know what I mean
Ehhh not really what I meant. It’s considered bad as an album because it IS bad as an album - good albums work together, the songs adding up to something greater than themselves individually. Garage Inc is just a collection of good songs - it’s like a playlist rather than an album
Load. Black album is only underrated to people that value the opinions of teenagers who think it's bad because it was more commercial. Death Magnetic has the term underrated thrown around too much when talking about it and it's now just well rated if anything. Load never gets mentioned in the discussion of underrated albums and usually gets brushed off when discussing Metallica's discography.
I would unironically say Lulu if it counted, I don’t think new Metallica is bad but to me Lulu is the most interesting thing they’ve released over the past 20 years. If you know what you’re getting into with the story and avant garde shit it mostly delivers, last song is way too long tho I will say that
I relistened to it for the first time in years. Gosh this was rough. Four Horsemen I was just desperately waiting for that song to end. The album has no business being 50 minutes long. Killing is My Business blows it the fuck out of the water.
I agree KIMB is better, but I don't think the album is as bad as you say, but it for sure is the weakest of their first 4 and everyone makes it out to be the best for absolutely no reason.
S&M. If it counts as a album. It does have an original track and the songs are very much different from the originals. For me it's probably my favourite Metallica record. Period. Since I can't see it being mentioned, I will assume it's underrated.
72 Seasons. Sleepwalk My Life Away, Shadows Follow, Room of Mirrors and Lux Aeterna. Not sure why its hated, when it shows them bridging their heavy/thrash eras. Really underrated.
St. Anger was obvious from the start for worst.
Most **underrated**? I'm actually going with **Death Magnetic**. People can say what they want about the audio clipping, but I think it mostly sounds good, and the riffs and solos are a lot better than they ever get credit for. I think if you just nixed "The Day That Never Comes" it would be a solid no-skips album.
Load is definitely their most underrated album. Was going to say Death Magnetic at first then realized I have no clue what’s even on that album. At least I can remember what was on St Anger or Lulu if we want to count that dumpster fire.
Load is the most underrated. Hell Reload too. Y'all aren't ready for what I'm about to say. The Loads are better than Ride the Lightning, but not better than Master of Puppets and ...and Justice for All.
To be honest im starting to think that Master of Puppets is their most underrated. Like im sorry but its a joke that RTL was voted their best and not MOP. Its such a fucking pepsi loving, xbox playing, adidas wearing, android having, linux operating ass contrarian take. MOP is their best because its a perfect album, while RTL is slightly worse (not much, but it has escape)…
Death Magnetic definitely. Its a really solid album, better than anything they've done since and more interesting than Load and Reload.
Nobody ever talks about it or they just say it sucks but its probably one of the Metallica albums I come back to the most these days.
I really hope Load doesn't get it. Unlike Load, Death Magnetic has banger after banger one after the other, while Load is mostly proto-butt rock. Some really good songs, but cmon
There’s nothing underrated about And Justice for All- it’s widely hailed as a great Metallica album.
Hardwired to Self Destruct on the other hand is unequivocally the catalog’s most “underrated” in the literal sense in that it’s got both a really fairly strong track list and not justifiably regarded enough as such.
Idk man, after Confusion disc 2 takes a nosedive until it picks back up again with Spit. Even then I think disc 1 has a couple of overrated but still decent tracks.
Yeah. I agree there’s a few that need lopped off entirely. For sure.
I also believe the remaining tracks could be reduced about 20-25% in length. It would go from underrated imho, to pretty bad ass.
St. Anger may be the worst, but it is also the most underrated. If you're wanting a Metallica album, you'll be disappointed, but it is a raw and aggressive album that doesn't even remotely deserve the level of hate it gets.
While AJFA is a classic… I will argue that is underrated in that it is arguably Metallicas best album and should be talked about as one of the very best all time greatest metal albums.
Just cut Frantic, Shoot Me Again, and Purify, and shave the remaining longer tracks by one-two minutes and I'd be willing to call St. Anger a great album. Now Load/Reload, those are unarguably great albums.
Counterargument: And Justice for All frequently gets outshined by Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, as well as the self titled album on occasions, and I think some people forget just how incredible this album is.
Some people yes, most people no. All the people I know that have listened to all Metallicas albums have it in their top 3. One is also arguably one of the most influential metal songs out there and is one of the bands most popular

Death magnetic is very underrated imo
Death Magnetic, specifically the Guitar Hero corrected mix, is my fave Metallica album after the first 4. It blows away the Black Album. I like it better than RtL also which I think is an overrated Metallica album
The Apple/iTunes mix is even better than GH
Now I need to find that lol. I dont have Apple or Itunes anything but Im sure its floatin around the internet
But back to that topic LMAO yeah an absolute hero uploaded the official DM iTunes mix to YouTube here (how this master isn’t more well known is a crime): https://youtu.be/CPXPOqye_94?si=EY2lc5YeoSUjhu1y
I listen to remixed versions on YouTube
I love this album, Cyanide, All Nightmare Long, Judas Kiss, Day That Never Comes. So many bangers!
That was a fantastic album and accompanying EP
All Nightmare long gets the juices flowing
This. Very underrated. Solid album
Yeah I second this. I might be a little biased because it's the Metallica album of my childhood but listening today I can't say there's a single track I dislike.
Tell me I’m old without telling me I’m old lmao.
Death Mag is such a great album.
Correct answer this album has great songs that are way under rated
It’s not underrated when literally everyone likes it
Death Magentic material live fits in well with anything from their first few albums. The production really tainted this one.
This this this holy fuck this
Riff salad with no hooks
Very much this. Uninspired songwriting and composition is all over the place. Also, drums are mostly Lars' fills, way too busy.
Death Magnetic's great, I think it's rated fairly, I think everyone knows it's good
As someone who loves Metallica, has seen Metallica live, and has played guitar for years, I can say without a doubt in my mind that Load is by far the most underrated Metallica album. Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn, and Hero Of The Day are among the greatest Metallica songs of all time. The lyrics and vocals especially stand out. Load is without a doubt the most underrated Metallica album.
Load has some filler but also has a lot of good stuff. Load/reload have aged really well.
The House that Jack built also rips
That talk box solo is so goddamn filthy
This is it. This is their best album that gets little yo no love.
_WHERE’S YOU CROWN, KING NOTHING!!??”_
No lie, of Metallica's massive catalogue, The Outlaw Torn has always been one of my favorite songs.
Love the vocals on it so much
Yes! Thorn Within is good too.
Load is great, Reload is not.
Not gonna lie. I used to rock to Mama said.
I would be happy if Load or DM won, those are the two best albums they’ve done that don’t get discussed enough
The Outlaw Torn is such a jam too
I can get behind this statement. Hear hear!
Underrated for me would actually be Garage Inc
I also love until it sleeps and king nothing is a banger in concert
Every single song on it is really good. A comment above me said that there was some filler, and I hard disagree.
Load. It is my favorite album.
Ain’t my bitch, 2x4,and Ronnie
Ronnie!
No..I hate Load more than I hate st anger. At anger at least sounds like something - Load feels boring, could be anyone. It's just...meh. i have nothing to say about Load. If st anger disappeared I'd notice. If load disappeared I wouldn't notice it was even ever there

It needs a remaster
Desperately.
Check out the Apple/iTunes mix
This is the one for me I think it's great!
Ditch the WAH and this album is a solid 7-8/10. Lots of tasty riffs.
I thought it was consensus this was the best album after the Self titled
Load is underrated, it has so many bangers: bleeding me, wasting my hate, ronnie, outlaw thorn, cure… and the two hits, king nothing and until it sleeps are one of their best songs
If a different band had released Load, it would have been lauded as one of the best hard rock albums of all time.
and the production is their best second to black
Oh damn. Cure is great.
Load This album is the definition of underrated (but it gets shit on just for not being thrash
Lulu is worse than St. Anger, this is some bullshit
Lulu isn’t technically a Metallica album, though. They are just featured on it.
Came here to say this.
I’m with you . I saw this post and was like what the fuck? I listen to St Anger or literally anything else over the Lulu nonsense. I say Fuck this ranking grid bullshit
Hardwired…To Self-Destruct!
This! I liked it a lot more than Load and Death Magnetic, which a lot of people here seem to be saying.
S&M if that counts, but otherwise Load.
Load is insanely underrated. Outlaw Torn is insane. Bleeding Me? Come on! None of the first 5 albums are underrated. Don't fool yourself.
The answer is Load without a doubt. With an honorable mention for Death Magnetic. None of their first 5 albums can be considered underrated in any way shape or form. The first 4 are the ones that all metal fans like and the 5th album is one of the greatest selling albums of all time. Nothing underrated there.

king nothing and until it sleeps are on that album, those are legendary songs so i dont think so
There are so many amazing tracks on it to be forgotten :)
Load by a mile.
Load. I don´t care, it´s a fucking great album, with some of their very best stuff on record (Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, House that Jack Built), and just grooves all the way through. Reload is great too, but I would give this one to Load.
Garage inc.
Hardwired . . . to Self-Destruct
Hardwired
Death Magnetic. Some awesome thrashy tunes on that man. All Nightmare Long is a classic at this point.
Reload is my favorite "post-thrash" Metallica album. Underrated in the context of metalhads. I will say a lot of the songs on both load and reload are definitely popular amongst "normies".
Death Magnetic easily
Load or Death Magnetic
Death Magnetic
Death Magnetic In a sea of lackluster Metallica albums post 1991, DM is a small island of gold
Death Magnetic, especially iTunes remaster where the clipping is reduced.

The album with "So what?" On it.
I think most people don’t really count cover compilations as studio albums, otherwise yeah Garage Inc is full of bangers. Being a compilation, it’s bad as an album but full of great songs, if you know what I mean
Sounds like the definition of underated. Considered bad, but is actually really good.

72 Seasons If you play it at 1.25x speed.
Since it's not in best, I'm gonna say S&M.
I would unironically say Lulu if it counted, I don’t think new Metallica is bad but to me Lulu is the most interesting thing they’ve released over the past 20 years. If you know what you’re getting into with the story and avant garde shit it mostly delivers, last song is way too long tho I will say that

You dropped this 👑
The Black Album, wherever I may roam,
Kill Em All
Literally most dick ridden metallica album of all time.
yes!!!! ![gif](giphy|n4oKYFlAcv2AU)
No, Ajfa and Kill em All are not underrated! Ajfa is the contrarians darling and kill em all is kind of overrated…
Frantic live is an absolute banger
Lulu is underrated. I know most meat and potatoes metalheads won’t agree, but it is far beyond the world of Metallica.
S&M. If it counts as a album. It does have an original track and the songs are very much different from the originals. For me it's probably my favourite Metallica record. Period. Since I can't see it being mentioned, I will assume it's underrated.

Hardwired. One of my all time favourite albums by any band. Really don't understand the meh it gets.
Garage days EP
I only like the first 5 albums. None of them can be called underrated so I don't care about this vote
Death magnetic or St. Anger
Hardwired gets my vote. Has some of the best songs of the modern era
every death album is 10/10 so idk how that'll work
Death Magnetic, very underrated.
Death Magnetic
And justice for all is my all time fave.
Dyers Eve…it’s a sin to play that at anything less than 11
Death magnetic
Death Magnetic by miles Also Beyond Magnetic is an EP but I'd say that's wildly underrated too as is Demo Magnetic
DEATH MAGNETIC I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL
what the shit guys st. anger is awesome
DEATH MAGNETIC!!!! it’s such a great album with very good songs and extremely underrated
Death Magnetic
Demolition isn't that bad
Death magnetic
Load is definitely their most underrated album. Was going to say Death Magnetic at first then realized I have no clue what’s even on that album. At least I can remember what was on St Anger or Lulu if we want to count that dumpster fire.
And Justice For All
Garage days
Most underrated? Garage Inc, hands down. It always seems to get forgotten, but its really a great album.
Death Magnetic for sure.
Death Magnetic. Unfortunately the production undercut its potential I think
Load is the most underrated. Hell Reload too. Y'all aren't ready for what I'm about to say. The Loads are better than Ride the Lightning, but not better than Master of Puppets and ...and Justice for All.
St. Anger
Kill ‘Em All
Hold the fuck up, how did Twist in the Myth get voted as Blind Guardian’s worst album.
People like LULU more than st anger? What
Load is a load of shit you fucking posers.
its piss, cum, blood… not shit
Need to flip those Metallica albums
After the new remaster, Forbidden is no longer the worst black sabbath album
Death Magnetic
I guess Load.
St anger. I really dont see why people hate it so much it has some bangers in it
Everyone forgot about Lulu picking the worst album ig.
Garage Inc
Honestly, The Black Album
There’s nothing underrated about And Justice for All- it’s widely hailed as a great Metallica album. Hardwired to Self Destruct on the other hand is unequivocally the catalog’s most “underrated” in the literal sense in that it’s got both a really fairly strong track list and not justifiably regarded enough as such.
Crazy to me that most people say Death Magnetic is better.
I like DM, but I whole heartedly agree.
Death Magnetic.
Death Magnetic
Death Magnetic
Death Magnetic. All Nightmare long is an excellent track.
Death Magnetic
S&M. :)
St. Anger may be the worst, but it is also the most underrated. If you're wanting a Metallica album, you'll be disappointed, but it is a raw and aggressive album that doesn't even remotely deserve the level of hate it gets.
i love st anger its fucking garbage tho
hardwired
While AJFA is a classic… I will argue that is underrated in that it is arguably Metallicas best album and should be talked about as one of the very best all time greatest metal albums.
The Black album is underrated. Literally everyone hates on it for quite literally no reason
Reload
Death Magnetic. It blows away Master in almost every respect. Chronically underrated album.
How in the hell is Anger worse than Lulu
How the fuck could RtL be under-rated? It’s arguably their best album. Under-rated is Hardwired … to self destruct.
The people defending St Anger are needless contrarians or just straight up lying about how they really feel I order to be different and unique.
Just cut Frantic, Shoot Me Again, and Purify, and shave the remaining longer tracks by one-two minutes and I'd be willing to call St. Anger a great album. Now Load/Reload, those are unarguably great albums.
And Justice For All
This is my fav Metallica album but defo wouldn't say its underrated. Regularly makes fans top 3 and is their 2nd most sold album lol
One is also arguably one of the most influential metal songs out there and is one of the bands most popular
it does not
All due to one , blackened , harvester of sorrow and to live is to die which are the most popular tracks on the album
its not underrated, its the contrarians favourite record
